NYSC Soon To Be Completely Optional—DG

Very soon, fresh graduates of Nigerian tertiary institutions will be at liberty to participate in the National Youth Service scheme. According to a press statement released Wednesday by the special adviser to the President on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina, Director-General General of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) Brigadier-General Johnson Olawumi during a presidential briefing Wednesday, informed President Buhari that plans are on the way to make the service voluntary due to the increasing number of prospective Corp members annually coupled with the lack of adequate fund to carter for their welfare.
According to Brigadier-General Olawumi, if fresh graduates are allowed to choose whether to participate in the scheme or not, the number of prospective Corp members will decrease thereby making it easier to manage the scheme efficiently.
The statement further disclosed that the officials of the ministry of youth development led by the Permanent Secretary Mrs Rabi Jimeta briefed President Buhari on the inability of NYSC to adequately carter for Corp members due to high increase in their population and inadequate funds for the scheme. Mrs. Jimeta told the President that the increasing number of NYSC participants posed a challenge to the scheme due to the dwindling revenue, from the national budget, to cater for their needs. She told the President that the annual enrolment of corps participants had increased from 2,364 at inception in 1974 to 229,016 in 2014.
“Given the increasing number of tertiary institutions, our projection is that the number of corps participants may rise to 300,000 by year 2020,’’ she said.
Responding, president Muhammadu Buhari pledged that his administration will take all necessary actions to maintain and improve the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme as a functional vehicle for the promotion of national unity and integration.
The President affirmed his confidence and trust in the programme, saying that the objective for which the scheme was established in 1973 was still very relevant for national development now.
“I firmly believe in NYSC and I think it should remain a national programme to promote integration.
“Whenever I go home to Daura, I look out for Corps members from Lagos, Aba and other parts of the country.
“I am always thrilled to learn that except for the NYSC, some of them have never left their states of origin to visit other cities in the country,” President Buhari said

NYSC Corps Member Drowns in Nasarawa River

Report exclusively obtained by Newspunchhas it that Mr. Babalola Olayinka of Batch “C” member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has been reported to have drowned in a river in Odu, a village in Nasarawa State where he is currently serving his father land.
The incident occurred on Saturday of August 1, 2015.

According to an eyewitness, the ugly incident happened when as usual the villagers trooped to the river. Many were fishing. Some came to swim; others to wash their clothes. In the throng were some Corps members, who chose to swim at the bank of the river. But, a few minutes into the game, one of them got drowned in the river.

Onlookers wondered how the late Babalola Olayinka got into the river. Initially, it was learnt that the Corps members were playing on the shore. “NEWSPUNCH” gathered that one of the Corp member pleaded with his colleague to move to the river on the basis of the fact that they were idle.

Our Source said; “The late Olayinka stood close to the river for a few seconds, after which he dived into the river to swim. His colleagues watched in excitement as he swam but in a moment, he stopped and started waving his hands. They thought he was still playing, until they didn’t see him again on the water surface.”

When his colleagues realized what was happening, they cried for help from the villagers, who were swimming in the river. After a few minutes of frantic search, the rescuers could not found the boy before he was later found at the bank of the river, dead and was immediately taken to the state hospital in Keffi..
The other Corps members declined to speak with our correspondents when contacted.

The Corps’ Liaison Officer (CLO) in the local government, Mr. Michael in his confirmation of Olayinka’s death described him as a “big loss to the NYSC in Nasarawa State.

Unilag Lecturer Rapes 18- Year-old Female Seeking Admission

A part-time lecturer at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Afeez Baruwa, has been arrested by the police in Lagos for allegedly raping an 18-year-old girl, identified as Caroline (not her real name).
It was learnt that the victim, who was reportedly raped inside a study room, was seeking admission into the University.
Baruwa who was arrested by the Surulere Police Division on Monday, August 3 told the police in his statement that the sexual intercourse was by mutual consent, insisting that he did not rape the victim.
Caroline got to know the lecturer through her Dad because they both belonged to the same landlords’ association in the Abesan, Ipaja area.
It was gathered that the victim’s father had allowed her daughter to follow the lecturer on July 23, to UNILAG for an admission process.
According to reports, Baruwa allegedly took the girl inside one of the study halls, bolted the door, and raped her.
After the incident, Caroline, who told her parents about the rape, was taken to a non-governmental organisation, Mirabel Centre, where she was tested and the medical result reportedly confirmed that the teenager had been raped.

After the confirmation, Caroline was taken to the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender, where the matter was reported at the police station. Baruwa was subsequently arrested.
A police source in Surulere said:
“The suspect is actually a friend of the father of the girl. The girl had written the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, and she needed assistance with the post-UTME.
“So, the father sent her to meet and discuss with the lecturer.
“But, it turned out that on July 23 when the girl visited the suspect, he raped the girl in the study room.
“The suspect confessed to the act, but his claim is that the s*x was by mutual consent.”

The Director of the Office of the Public Defender, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, said the OPD would write a letter to the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor on the incident, so as to ensure that such did not happen again to anyone.
She said,
“The victim’s father wanted the lecturer to assist with his daughter’s admission. On the fateful day, the girl left with the lecturer as early as 5.30am, and they got to the school at about 7am.
“No one had arrived at the hall except a woman. While the exams had yet to start, he raped her. She went home, and the father found out that her daughter had been raped. He took her to the Mirabel Centre, which then informed the OPD.
“The centre also contacted the police at the Surulere and Isokoko divisions, and the suspect was arrested.
“We are going to defend the girl, and we are writing the VC. The suspect is said to be in the Department of Accounting. He claimed the s*x was consensual, but that is not a defence.”
Baruwa, who is currently in custody, will be charged to court on today, Thursday, Aug 6th.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Patricia Amadin, confirmed the arrest.

She said:
“The suspect claims to be a part-time lecturer, but not an employee of the University of Lagos.
“He has confessed to the crime and the medical result proved same.”
