CIBN Collabo with UNILORIN on Degree Linkage

Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, CIBN to partner University of Ilorin, UNILORIN on degree linkage. UNILORIN will be among the first universities to commence the linkage programme.
The Unilorin – CIBN Joint Degree Linkage Committee has been inaugurated to midwife the Banking degree programme of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) at the University of Ilorin.
The CIBN President, Mrs. ‘Debola Osibogun, disclosed this last Monday (June 22, 2015) during a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON).
Members of the committee from the University of Ilorin are: Prof. (Mrs.) N. Y. S. Ijaiya, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic); Prof. Ayodele Jimoh, the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences; and Dr. M. A. Ijaiya, the Ag. Head of the Department of Finance while the members from the CIBN are: Mr. Segun Shonubi, the Group Head, Membership Services; Mr. Akin Morakinyo, Group Head, Capacity Building and Certification; and Mr. Biodun Alarape, Zonal Coordinator, South West.
Mrs. Osibogun, who commended the University of Ilorin on its prime position among Nigerian universities by becoming the most sought-after of the nation’s 147 universities, pointed out that the CIBN is filling the knowledge gap that has been observed in the sector through the ACIB/degree linkages with higher institutions of learning.
She noted that the University of Ilorin is among the first universities to commence the linkage programme, adding that the CIBN programmes would help to produce “refined, qualified and better bankers.”
While thanking the Unilorin Vice-Chancellor for the warm reception accorded her and members of her entourage, the CIBN President recalled the event of November 28, 1963 when 124 bankers assembled at Randle Hall, Surulere, Lagos and passed a resolution for the establishment of the Local Centre of the Institute of Bankers, London, in Nigeria with the mandate of promoting banking education in Nigeria and esprit-de-corps among professional bankers.
She explained that the body is saddled with the responsibility of determining the standards of knowledge and skills to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the banking profession, adding that it also secures, in accordance with the provisions of the Act establishing it, the establishment and maintenance of a register of members of the banking profession.
Mrs. Osibogun also disclosed that the CIBN conducts professional examinations leading to the awards of certificates as may be prescribed by the Institute and ensures the furtherance, maintenance and observance of ethical standards and professionalism among practitioners of the banking profession in Nigeria.
She then used the occasion to invite lecturers in the Department of Banking and Finance and members of the University management to the Institute’s upcoming programmes that include Seminar for educators, Annual Conference of Banking and Finance Professionals, CIBN Investiture and the Annual Dinner. The programmes are scheduled to hold in November this year.
In his response, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ambali, described the CIBN as a friend and a partner. He said that the University has great respect for the banking industry, which he noted, reflects in the allocation of a land space on the campus dedicated to banking activities.
Prof. Ambali said, “As a progressive institution, we grab every opportunity that comes our way to advance education. We are not only stable; we also offer qualitative education that is of international standard.”
On how to maintain the University’s number one position in Nigeria, the Vice-Chancellor opined that refining the good things the University is doing and improving the areas of deficiencies are the only ways to remain the number one university in the country.
“We want our students to abide by the ethics of their professions. We look forward to the successful implementation of our linkage programme, as we believe charity must begin at home. We are in support of anything that adds value to what we are doing”, Prof. Ambali said.
The CIBN President was accompanied on the visit by the Kwara State CIBN Branch chairperson, Mrs. Bolaji Bosede; the Group Head, Membership Services, Mr. Segun Shonubi, a Director, Chief G. A. Oyinloye; and the General Secretary, Mr. Jinadu H. Olayiwola.

44 UNIZIK Students Renounced Cultism

Just like the parable of the prodigal son in the bible, no fewer than 44 students yesterday, decided to turn a new leaf as they openly and willingly renounced every form of association with secret cultism at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
The renunciation was made at the UNIZIK cult renunciation ceremony organized by the management of the institution and held at the convocation arena. The event according to the Director of Information and Public Relations of the university, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu was also aimed at dedicating the institution, the staff and students back to the almighty God.
The event, which was the second of its kind in the annals of the citadel of learning, was well attended by staff and students of the university and was graced by eminent clergymen within and outside the confines of the institution. Present at the event include the vice chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku and the wife Dr. Gladys Ahaneku; the deputy vice chancellor (Academics), Prof. Charles Esimone; deputy vice chancellor (Administration), Prof. Onyeyili; the registrar, Barr. C.C Okeke and Dean, Students Affairs, Prof. Ken Nwogu.
In his homily, the guest clergyman, Rev. Fr. Paul Obayi popularly known as “Okunerere” (consuming fire) stated that cultism is full of deceit and adds no value to the lives of members. Fr. Obayi who disclosed that he was once an occultist before being arrested by God, revealed that in cultism, one is bonded, imprisoned and freedom restricted.
Frowning at the rate youths are dabbling into cultism, the revered clergyman said, “It is an act of foolishness to join cultism. There is no gain in cultism, it is embedded in deception”. He further charged the students to desist from cultism and face their primary assignment in school, which is to read and pass with good grades to become better persons in the society, urging them to return to God, as He is the giver of wisdom.
High point of the occasion was a special deliverance session of the 44 persons made up of both sexes by the officiating priests Rev. Fr. Obayi assisted by Rev. Fr. Mario- David Dibie and Rev. Fr. Bonachristus Umeogu. During the session, about 21 more persons came out under the auction of the Holy Spirit.
In his remark, the vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Ahaneku, described the event as a spiritual irrigation geared towards total submission of the staff and students of the institution to God.
Prof. Ahaneku who was visibly overwhelmed and marveled at the number of those that renounced cultism as well as the turn out of the university community at the event, thanked them for allowing God take control of their lives. In his words, “We need God to give us the enabling power to take control in our society. Because we have submitted, God has prepared us for the journey ahead. Be assured that the university management is here to protect your interest” to achieve the best degrees with which you can contribute to the development of the Nigerian society.
What we have done today is to submit to God and it will be captured in the records of this university as we train you not only in learning but also in character”. He expressed optimism that the contact from God has touched the lives of all the students in the university.
Speaking to liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine, the chair, organizing committee and deputy vice chancellor (Academics) of the university, Prof. Esimone disclosed that the event is part of the resolve of the management of the institution to rid UNIZIK of all forms of secret cult activities and enthrone discipline and responsible studentship.

DELSU Bans Female Students From Wearing Of Miniskirts

Delta State University, Abraka Management on Saturday banned female students of the institution from wearing of miniskirts.

This was promulgate to liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Vincent Peretemode.
The VC also ordered the reduction of fellowship centres in the school from over 80 to four.

The school’s administration cites the reason for the change to be the distracting nature of the clothing articles for young male students during school time.
He said in the statement, “I have observed in the recent times that over 80 fellowship centres are on the three campuses. We cannot allow such. Fellowship centres have in recent time portended crisis that was almost unabated.”

The statement listed the four approved religious bodies to include Catholic, Anglican, Joint Christian Campus Fellowship and Our Saviours Chapel, as it indicated that there could be crisis among the students if the fellowship centres were not reduced.

UNIZIK Students Nab Thief During Night Class

Report reaching us has it that a student of sociology in Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) whose name cannot be ascertain at the time of filing this report was caught yesterday night at the faculty of management sciences where students often go for night class.

While some students go to the faculty of management to read, some unscrupulous fellows see it as an opportunity to steal.
The thief who claims to be a student of sociology was alleged to have stolen a phone and when an alarm was raised, he jumped down the story building and fled.
Some able bodied students followed suit and caught him. The security men were alerted and on arrival, the student was handed over to them.

In his possessions were phones, pack of cigarette, reading lamps and chargers. He confessed to the theft allegations.
This act of stealing has become prevalent at Management sciences and at Garba square where students read often.
Their modus operandi according to a security official in the school who wouldn’t want his name made public, is that they wait for students to sleep and immediately swing into action.

He advised students to always keep their phones and laptops at home if possible when coming for night class. He further advised them to be vigilant whenever they come to read.

Dearth of accommodation: YabaTech bars students from converting lecture halls to hostels

The Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech), Lagos, says it has barred students from staying at lecture halls beyond 7.00 p.m. both during the week and at weekends.
The measure, according to the institution’s spokesman, Mr Charles Oni, is to check the practice of converting the lecture halls to hostels by the students.
Oni, in a statement on Saturday obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the ban would be in force until ongoing of renovation of the hostels was completed.
NAN reports that the ban was a reaction to the recent development in the college whereby students sleep at lecture halls due to lack of hostel accommodation on the campus.
``It has come to the attention of the management that some students still evade security checks to hibernate and even sleep in lecture halls in spite of the subsisting ban.
``The hostels are undergoing renovation as many of you are aware, and efforts are on to beef up security around these same hostels in view of developments around the college.
``The hostels will be available for students' use as soon as possible.

``Pending the conclusion of renovation and the expansion of security apparatus, no student should be found in any of the classrooms beyond 7.00 p.m.,’’ Oni said. (NAN)

Fulfilment Meet LAUTECH's best graduating student

Ojo Abimbola, 27, was the best graduating student from the Department of Medicine and Surgery, Ladoke Akintola University of Science and Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, in the 2013/2014 academic session, Punch reports.
In this interview, she reveals her dreams, motivation, and shares advice on how to be successful.
What was your attraction for Medicine?
Mine started as a childhood dream, just as many other children used to echo it when asked what they would like to be in future. As I grew older, I had interest in health related sciences (medicine, nursing and pharmacy). By the time I finished secondary school, I knew I would study medicine because I wanted to help save lives. Then, my parents indirectly influenced me, not in a forceful manner though. My dad is a pharmacist, so I saw how his profession gave him the opportunity to help others; not only their health but also in every other area of life, like counselling. I used to visit the hospital where he worked and I think those visits partly inspired me to be a doctor. So, when I told him my wish, he encouraged and supported me. Medicine gives one an opportunity to impact lives, so I love it.
What about the fact that it is not as lucrative as some other courses that are less difficult?
In my view, Medicine is more of a help ministry than a lucrative business. Most of those who need the service of doctors, especially in this part of the world, cannot afford it due to poverty. Most people think doctors are rich but I think that has changed. Politicians and business tycoons are richer in our own country. However, being a doctor gives one a fairly comfortable life, which is good enough. So, I am not worried that Medicine may not be as rewarding monetarily but being able to help others is pretty rewarding, and like our teachers would say, ‘be a good doctor first, the money will come later.’ Someone who studied Medicine thinking it is lucrative may end up being disappointed because the pay may not be commensurate with the time and effort invested.
But some people think that only brilliant students can study Medicine. From your experience, is that true?
Any student that has the interest, well motivated and diligent in whatever he or she does can study medicine. One doesn’t need to be very brilliant to do it. It’s an erroneous view that only the best students in secondary schools should be admitted into medicine. The main qualities that I think are needed to be a good medical student are interest, diligence and consistency.
How was your performance in your previous schools?
It was quite easy. I was the best graduating student in my secondary school. I passed my West African Senior School Certificate Examination once; I had distinction in all the subjects. I wrote the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination twice but I passed on both occasions. The first one I scored 256, and the second time I scored 280. I had to write UTME twice because the first time I wrote the exam, I chose Ekiti State University. I was actually offered Medicine and Surgery but that was the time the state government decided to cancel the medical programme in the university, so I lost the admission that year. It wasn’t a nice experience but I had to rewrite UTME the following year and applied to LAUTECH. My name was on the merit list.
How was the experience the first time you had to work on a cadaver (dead body)?
I don’t think there was anything spectacular. People do have funny stories whether real or imagined (mostly imagined) about cadavers but I told myself that if the cadaver was to try anything funny, like rising up, I wouldn’t be there to witness it. I also felt that because I wasn’t responsible for the person’s death, the cadaver would have no right to harass me. Eventually, none of the cadavers tried anything funny. That first experience opened my eyes to see how helpless human beings are once there is no breath in us again. It was an eye-opener. So, unlike what some people used to say, I didn’t have any bad dream or lose sleep because of that. When anybody dies, the a person remains dead until resurrection, so there is no way a cadaver could stand up to hold my hand. They are helpless, and we have to move them to the position we want them to be on the dissecting tables.
What about the sight of blood?
I don’t dread the sight of blood but I still have feeling when I see it, especially when I see very gory sights (usually from road crashes brought to our teaching hospital emergency unit) but I quickly get over it and do what I am instructed to do. I don’t get scared to the point of running away.
What was your most memorable day as a medical student?
I will always remember the distinction in pathology and surgery viva (oral examination). I sat in front of professors and ‘elders’ in the profession and I was wondering what I could ever say that would impress them enough to award me a distincti

Rivers State Polytechnic NANS calls Wike a 'rascal' over 344 workers' sack, allege 'vengeful vendetta'

GovernorNyesom Wikehas been criticized over the sacking of 344 lecturers and other staff ofRivers State Polytechnic, Boni-Ogoni.
TheNational Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) condemned the action in a statement signed by its National President, ComradeTijani Usman.
According to Usman, the decision is an "administrative rascality" and “vengeful vendetta” that should be condemned.
"Nigerian students condemn in totality the action taken by the Rivers State governor as it lacks any moral and rational justification," Usman said.
"Sacking 344 lecturers and other staff of the institution in one fell swoop under the guise that their employment did not follow due process is a demonstration of administrative rascality.”
Usman added that Wike, being a former minister of state of education, should not have allowed political sentiments to affect his decisions in the sector.
“It is sad that rather than concentrate on providing dividends of democracy as promised, he is busy carrying out vengeful vendetta."
Wike had directed that the worker's appointments be terminated barely 20 days into office, alleging that the immediate past governor,Rotimi Amaechi, arbitrarily employed about 500 people without due process.
There were speculations that a further 13,200 teachers employed by the last government are at risk of being sacked.

In Sokoto... 16-yr-old student still missing 2 months after attack by hired thugs

A 16-year-old student ofSani Dingyadi Unity Secondary Schoolin Sokoto State,Abdulrahman Bala Altine, has been missing for two months.
Altine's father, MalamBala Altine Kasarawa, toldDaily Trustthat his son disappeared after an attack by thugs said to have been hired by the state’ chairman of theNigerian Union of Teachers(NUT),Chika Maidamma.
Kasarawa said Maidamma, who is also his neighbour, had sent the thugs to deal with his son who had quarelled with his [Maidamma] wife.
“His wife, Hajiya Rabi entered my house and beat up my son, Abdulrahman, in the presence of his mother," Kasarawa said.
"The incident caused his mother to collapse because she is hypertensive. It took us hours to revive her.
"As we were reviving her, Chika hired area boys who came looking for Abdulrahman in two vehicles and dangerous weapons, but by then, he had left the house.
He said his son has been missing since that incident.
"Since I did not know his whereabouts, I reported the matter to the police.
"The police invited and detained Chika, only to be released after agreeing to find my child within one week which has since elapsed.
"He was later invited by the police again and DSS and was let go after promising to look for the boy and bring him home."
But the matter took a new turn when the alleged assaulter arrested Kasarawa.
“On Sunday, May 17, Chika reported me to Bado office of the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps who came and arrested me at around 2:17am," he added.
"He later reported me to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 10, accusing me of aiding my son to escape arrest after attacking his pregnant wife at his residence.
"This is why I resorted to the press, to help me seek justice over the matter."
Maidamma has however denied the allegations.
He said the 'missing' student was the one who hired area boys to unleash terror on his pregnant wife.
“We were at the hospital till 2am on that fateful day because she was bleeding as a result of the attack,” he said.
"And we were advised to come back every week by the doctor.
The NUT chairman however corroborated Kasarawa's claim that he was initially arrested.
He however said he had delayed taking action over the matter with the hope that the student would be found and handed over to the police.

Strike lecturers at theTaraba State Universitywill continue their three-month long action until the state government fulfils its promises to them. The chapter Chairman of theAcademic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU), Dr Reuben Jonathan, who spoke toDaily Trust, said the need for proper funding of the university by the state government led to the industrial action. "University is capital intensive and now that the state has delved into, she has to fund it," he said. Jonathan noted that the state government had refused to pay lecturers five months strike during the infamous national ASUU strike in 2013. The union leader said after two change in government in the state, the union had only received N100 million of the nearly N500 million owed it. "Apart from the N100 million given by the state government so far, nothing has come to the university from the state, which is too bad." He added that the university would not have existed but for the projects executed under theTertiary Education Trust Fund(TETFund)

PresidentMuhammadu Buhari's government must take the task of revitalizing public education as important as the much talked about anti-corruption war if the promised change is to be achieved.
The Vice-Chancellor ofKwara State University(KWASU), Malete, ProfessorAbdulrasheed Na’Allah, said this recently in aDaily Trustinterview.
Na’Allah said the new government needs to take public education as seriously as corruption.
"Public education must be revitalized," he said.
"I know it is important this government look into corruption but I have not heard a lot said about public education and that is extremely important and it has to be a policy focus, the government should declare war or emergency and mobilize from local governments to states to revitalize public education in Nigeria."
The Vice Chancellor noted that the terrible state of many schools has led to many parents opting for private schools because "people have no more confidence in public schools and I think this government must take this as one area of major change for Nigeria.
"If public education is revitalized and parents begin to have confidence again in public education, a lot of changes will come to this nation."
He concluded that bringing back the glory days of education would go a long way in actualizing the government’s change drive

How Seven Youths Gang-rape Trader In Alaba Market

Two of them, ─ Abeeb Busari, 22, and 18-year-old Lawal Gbolahan ─ who were nabbed and arraigned in court by the police, have been remanded in custody by an Apapa Magistrate’s Court.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the police had launched a manhunt for the other fleeing offenders while the arrested suspects have owned up to the crime.

The victim, 24-year-old Bola (pseudonym), sells fairly-used clothes in the area.

It was gathered that the woman was hawking her wares around 4.30pm on May 27, when Busari, who works as a bricklayer on a construction project at the market, summoned her under the pretext of buying a jacket for which he agreed to pay N500.

He reportedly told her to follow him to a room in a plaza at the market ─ where he had lodged ─ to collect the money for the item.

Busari, it was learnt, was acting on the order of one of his accomplices, identified as Tunde, who reportedly orchestrated the crime to punish the victim for an undisclosed offence.

Our correspondent was told that on getting to the room, Busari shut the door and ordered the woman to sit, while Gbolahan and the other five fugitives jumped down from the roof, where they had hidden. They allegedly took turns To Molest her.

After about 30 minutes, a welder, Idris Lasisi, who reportedly saw the trader and Busari, traced her to the plaza and barged into the room.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects threatened him with a dagger when he attempted to raise the alarm.

Busari, who hails from the Ikorodu area of the state, confessed to the crime, saying it was Tunde, one of the fleeing suspects, who planned the act.

He said, “I was in the market on the fateful day when I saw Bola hawking fairly-used clothes.

I deceived her that I wanted to buy a jacket and asked her to follow me upstairs to collect the money.

As soon as she entered my room, I locked the door. Before then, my friend, Tunde had made arrangement with other five boys to hide inside the ceiling.

“They jumped down as soon as she came in. It was Tunde, who tore her panties and threatened her with a dagger. Idris (Lasisi) forcefully entered while the act was on, but Tunde threatened to stab him if he shouted. When we were done, I gave her N500 for the jacket, but Tunde collected it from her.”

In his statement, Gbolahan, who is also a bricklayer, said he was in his house, located around the market when Tunde invited him, adding that he was forced To Molest the woman.

He said, “I was inside my own room, when Tunde called me into the room, where Bola was kept. He told me she had offended him once and he wanted to deal with her. He forced me to join in gang-raping her.”

It was gathered that Lasisi eventually managed to sneak out of the room while the men were immersed in the act and alerted traders at the market, leading to Busari and Gbolahan’s arrest by policemen from the Layeni Police Station.

They were subsequently arraigned before a chief magistrate, Mr. P.A. Adekomaya, on two counts of rape.

The charges read, “That you, Abeeb Busari, Lawal Gbolahan, and five others now at large, on May 27, 2015, at about 4.30pm, at Alaba New Market, Lagos, in the Apapa Magisterial District, did conspire to commit felony to wit: rape.

“That you and five others at large on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district did unlawfully and forcefully have the carnal knowledge of one Bola.”

The defendants pleaded guilty to the charges, which according to a police prosecutor, ASP Olusoji Ojaokomo, contravene sections 409 and 348 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

Adekomaya ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison and adjourned the case till July 28, 2015.

Vice Chancellor of the Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe (Daily Trust)
A human rights lawyer,Maxwell Opara, has dragged theNational Open University of Nigeria(NOUN) before a Federal High Court over its law degree programmes.
Opara, in a writ of summons filed by his counsel, Nnenna Opara, argued that the law programme of NOUN has not conformed to the minimum standards of law education as set by the Nigerian Law School (NLS)'s Council of Legal Education (CLE) which stipulates that "law must be studied on a full time basis and not on part time or by correspondence."
According to him, NOUN "deceived and lured innocent Nigerians to believe that NOUN was duly accredited to offer law."

Love Expo? NECO Warns Candidates Against Online Scam Artistes

People claiming to have theNational Examination Council (NECO) LIVE questions and answersuse social media and other platforms to deceive unsuspecting victims, luring them into parting with sums of money under the guise of providing them questions and answers before the commencement of each paper during the examinations. These scam artists also sometimes claim to upgrade scores after the exam.To ensure that you never fall victim to a scam, make knowledge and self-vigilance your first line.

The National Examination Council (NECO) has warned candidates sitting for its examinations against patronising people who post requests online, asking them to pay and get leaked answers.

NECO’s Abuja Liaison Officer, Mr Abdul Mustapha, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja, said such online postings were from scammers.
NAN reports that NECO organises Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE) and National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE).

According to Mustapha, such fraudsters cheat unsuspecting candidates, adding that whoever patronises is doing that at his/her peril.

“They have no access to our answers; they cannot get our answers; they will pretend as if they have seen the answers but it is all lies.

“Our questions appear in four types – types A to D ; but what they present to unsuspecting candidates is just manufactured answers without the type specifications.

“Again, our questions stop at 50, but theirs continue from 51 to 100; that is another proof that they have not seen our answers.

“In one occasion, in our biology exam, the specimen was an ear but they drew flower in their own fake answers,’’ he said.
He said that candidates had always shy from reporting to NECO when they fell prey to scammers, ‘’knowing that they tried to cheat but ended up being cheated.’’

The 2015 NECO SSCE internal examination which commenced on May 21 will end on July 10. (NAN)
Anyone who receives these false solicitations is strongly advised to either disregard them in their own best interest, or report to the nearest law enforcement agency.
