Why Buhari wants Islamic books included in Federal schools’ curriculum

The president, gave the directive, weekend, in Kaduna while launching the reviewed editions of the books which were first published in 1974.

Represented by Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, the President noted that such books had become essential in the face of declining moral and religious values in the country.

The Islamic Studies for Secondary Schools, co-sponsored by the Bashir Sambo Centre for Islamic Da’awah and Jaiz Charity and Development Foundation in memory of late Justice Bashir Sambo, former Judge of Sharia Court of Appeal and the Code of Conduct Tribunal, were reviewed by Mallam Mukhtar Lere to conform with the current 6-3-3-4 educational system in the country.

Buhari thanked the co-authors for updating and structuring the books to match the new secondary school curriculum. He urged the Ministry of Education to look at the books with a view to adopting them in all government colleges.

The chairman, Board of Trustees of Jaiz Charity and Development Foundation, Alhaji Umar A. Mutallab, said the Bashir Sambo Centre for Islamic Da’awah was established by disciples and associates of late Justice Sambo in order to immortalise and inspire the legacy of the late sage.

PresidentMuhammadu Buharihas made plans for the education of internally displaced children, according to Vice PresidentYemi Osinbajo.

Speaking in Kano during an official visit to the internally displaced boarding school built by the immediate past former Kano state governor, Dr.Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, Osinbajo said the Buhari-led administration has a plan in place.

According to him, the program calledPresidential Initiative Project for the Northeast, includes provisions for the education of the children affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.

“The federal government has a bigger project for these young children, the Presidential Initiative Project for the Northeast which comprises short, medium and long term projects," Osinbajo said.

"Part of it is education for the children that are now at IDP camps and for all children who have been displaced. Government must create more opportunities for displaced children."

The Vice President noted that "it is the duty of the federal government working with state governments to ensure rebuilding of the affected places".
He promised that the government will ensure that all internally displaced persons (IDPs) can return home.

UBA Gives N52.9m Endowment Fund To University Of Lagos

As part of its commitment to a globally competitive educational system in the country, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has given a N52.9 million endowment fund to resuscitate the UBA Professorial Chair of Finance at the University of Lagos.

Presenting the cheque to this effect to the vice chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Rahaman Bello, and members of the institution’s governing council, the group managing director and chief executive of UBA, Mr Philips Odozua reiterated the bank’s commitment to developing education.

“We have seen that there is a huge gap in the funding of educational system in the country and UBA as an institution, strongly believes in the future of Nigeria and that a well trained and educated manpower is germane to our growth and development as a nation, which is the reason we have decided to resuscitate this endowment,” he said.

Oduoza assured that the bank will continue to promote research and innovation in the Nigerian educational system to boost man-power development and called on other banks, companies, institutions and individuals to emulate the UBA’s gesture.

“As first line beneficiaries of quality manpower to support the pursuit of research and education in all Nigerian universities, private sector endowments will result in the creation of centres of excellence in different Nigerian universities, improving the quality of graduates, decision making and leadership in the society. Government alone cannot make this happen,” Oduoza stated.

Speaking on the relationship that exists between UBA and Unilag, the VC of the institution said, “It is worthy to mention here today that the first financial institution to show its presence on campus and to support academic excellence in the university was UBA. #Source: Leadership

OAU Suspends SUG President Over Planned US Trip

The SUG President of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Mr. Omotayo Akande, has been debar from office by members of the Students Representative Council for allegedly seeking over N650,000‎ to attend an International Campus Conference at New York, United State of America without their knowledge.
This was contained in a parliamentary resolution jointly signed by the Speaker, ‎ Adebari Adedayo‎; Clerk of the House, Ogunkanmi Omotayo; ‎and Deputy Speaker, ‎Olowofoyehan Oluseun, on Monday.
Liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine gathered that the suspended president had allegedly written a letter of sponsorship to the school management for the trip without informing other executive members.
It was learnt that when the information leaked, some members of the students’ legislative arm ‎argued that the moves of the suspended president was suspicious.
According to the resolution, ‎the suspended president was summoned to give his own account after a petition was written against him but was found wanting.
The resolutions read in part, “The House summoned the Students’ Union President to the floor of the Parliament in line with a correspondence written against him by a honourable member of the House, claiming he requested for close to N700,000 sponsorship based on his proposed ‘Trip to the 7th Millenium International Conference for Students’ Leaders’.
“The President claimed there was nothing clandestine in his letter of request for sponsorship as some of the CEC members knew about it.
“The Parliament, being the conscience and guidance of our dear Union, took a constitutional look into the matter. After much observations, debates and submissions from honourables, and of course, gallerians, the President was found wanting of not following “constitutional procedure” by sending his letter of request for sponsorship without the signature of the Union Secretary-General or his Assistant (both claimed to be away) and his failure to inform the House.”
Attempts to get Akande’s response failed as calls put across to his telephone did not go through.
‎The students also called on the Economic and Financial Crime Commission to investigate the OAU management over increase in school fees.
