All Airports In Nigeria Will Be Shut Sunday Midnight – Aviation Unions

Airports across Nigeria may be shut down beginning from Sunday midnight, two leading unions in the sector have threatened.

The unions – National Union of Air Transport Employees, (NUATE) and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), in a letter dated October 21, 2015, accused the NCAA of not adhering to the condition of service with respect to promotion of workers and other welfare issues.

The letter jointly signed by the Secretary General NUATE and Secretary General NAAPE, Comrades Olayinka Abioye and Aba Ocheme, respectively, threatened to shut down the agency from mid-night on Sunday until further notice.
The unions insisted that the withdrawal of service by the workers became paramount in order to safeguard the integrity of NCAA’s condition of service.
The unions noted that the action of the Director-General of the NCAA, Captain Muhtar Usman, was in violation of section 3.4 of condition of service, adding that all efforts to discuss with the management had been futile.

The letter said: “By the copy of this notice, the general public is hereby informed of this development and the implications that all safety regulations activities of the NCAA will be unavailable from that time and date.
“The above notice will remain in force until otherwise directed by the secretariat of our unions.”
“The management of NCAA has been playing some pranks so to speak because ordinarily, people who are due for promotion ought to have received their letters since January or thereabout, but as we speak those letters are not forthcoming.

“The management is trying to introduce a new policy that is not known to the condition of service, which is that they said the ministry of aviation directed them to conduct an examination.
“We are going to take all lawful and legal steps to ensure that we do what we have capacity and capability to do, which the last resort will be a strike because we are tired of impunity of the NCAA management,” the letter added.

Nigeria Education 'PTDF overseas scholarship has not been cancelled'

Reports that thePetroleum Technology Development Fund(PTDF) overseas scholarship scheme has been cancelled are false.
The Executive Secretary of PTDF,Femi Ajayi, made the clarification while speaking withDaily Trustat a two-day workshop on collaboration between Oil and Gas Centres of Excellence and Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Ajayi explained that the Fund only restructured the terms of the scheme.
"The PTDF has not cancelled the scheme,"the Executive Secretary said.
"The point I have made is that as much as possible we want to increase capacity building locally here and because of that even our training partners; we have told them that going forward, people that we would be favourably disposed to, are those partners who are ready to encourage our domestication drive.

"We are asking them to come and set up shops in our country here, to do what they are doing for us over there, here."

He further explained that cancelling the scheme is not likely to ever happen because of the importance of encouraging interaction interaction.
"In fact we are not likely to be able to cancel it outright because don’t forget, there is a need for intellectual interaction and diffusion even within the country.
"If you bring scholars who trained in the US, Germany and the ones that trained in the UK, the mix is the best you can have and be better for you because we are combining the expertise from so many places."

The PTDF is a Federal Government parastatal established to develop petroleum technology and building indigenous manpower for Nigeria's oil and gas industry.

In Ekiti Govt college hit by strange disease, 300 students hospitalised

At least 300 students of the Federal Government Girls’ College in Efon Alaaye,EkitiState, are hospitalised after being infected with a strange disease.
According to reports, parents have already withdrawing their children from the school as news of the epidemic spread on Thursday.
It was gathered that the diseased is suspected to be Cholera, as some of the victims have been treated and discharged, but a chunk of them are still being treated.
Symptoms of the disease was said to have started manifesting on October 10, and according to the school principal, Grace Ogunyomi, the case was reported to the state government but no immediate action was taken - only routine medical attention was said to have been provided.
However, the state GovernorAyodele Fayose, is said to have immediately directed the state Commissioner for Health, DrOlurotimi Ojo, to deploy medical personnel to stop the spread of the disease.
Mrs. Ojo dismissed reports that the disease is cholera, he said it wasdiarrhea.
It was initially believed that the students’ food must have been contaminated, but it was later found that the source of the disease was not from their food.
The Commissioner said,“We alerted the water corporation to chlorinate their water. They have about six boreholes and we have got them chlorinated, because we knew as professionals that the water could be a source,” he said.
“We are trying to look into their environment, so that we can get where such could have broken out. We want to know how they dump their faeces and how they dump their sewage.
“We have taken the blood samples of students infected to the hospital and preliminary test shows that it was not cholera. It was diarrhea and vomiting. We are sending the samples for further test to confirm that it was not cholera.”
She assured that there is no cause for alarm as government would ensure the situation is nomalised.

26-year-old banker, Daniel Makanjuola, has been arrested by the Police in Lagos for using a forged West African Senior School Certificate and Lagos State University’s statement of result to get a job at Wema Bank Plc, Marina branch,Lagos Island.
The police said Makanjuola pretended that he was a degree holder in marketing with Second Class, Upper Division, and had also provided a forged National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate and a reference letter to the bank before he gained employment. He claimed to have obtained the letter from United Bank for Africa, where he supposedly worked previously.
According to Punch, Daniel who is from Ijero Local Government Area in Ekiti State, had joined the bank in 2013, before he was sacked in July 2015 after the documents were confirmed to be fake.

After the discovery, the bank decided to write West African Examinations Council and LASU, to confirm the veracity of his documents but both exam bodies disclaimed the results Makanjuola had presented to WEMA
The suspect was arrested after the case was reported at the Lion Building Police Station.
After his arrest, the suspect, in a statement to the police confessed to the crime and explained how he obtained the forged certificates.

He said:
“I am actually a National Diploma holder. I secured the fake WASCE and LASU results, using a search engine and CorelDraw application. I scanned an NYSC certificate and used some applications to edit it. I did it in order to put an end to the suffering of my poor family. I am the only son of my father. I want the authority to be compassionate with my case. I was only trying to live a better life.”
A police prosecutor, Inspector I. Okeke, arraigned Makanjuola at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on three counts of forgery.

University of Maiduguri Nigeria's cultures face extinction, youth lack cultural training — Don

Cultural values in Nigeria face extinction as youth increasingly adopt foreign ways of life, says a lecturer at theUniversity of Maiduguri(UNIMAID), DrBabagana Kachallah.

Kachallah, a research expert at UNIMAID's Centre for Trans-Saharan Studies, said most of the traditions and cultures of the Kanuri people and other ethnic groups in country will soon become extinct.

The don blame the development of the lack of cultural orientation of the youth who adopt foreign cultures, especially with regards to fashion and beauty values.
"Our youth do not have the basic cultural training and cultural orientation, to be seen as potential stake holders in our cultural struggles to build an independent society that depends on its indigenous local resources," Kachallah said.

"Today, we hardly see our traditional hairdo in Borno, the "Shangalti, the figgeria, kiliyasku, Hajja amne, rob and Mai Ali," which were some of the typical traditional attire used by our women.
"Most of our girls and ladies have adopted various hair styles of external origin, thereby giving way for our local hair to disappear.

"Our traditional cosmetics such as "Moromoro, grumbal and alaama, have all gone out of use and the women now patronize foreign cosmetics at high rate to sustain their beauty and feminine values."

According to him, there is a need to reorientation of the youths to reverse the influence of external cultures and the erosion of the local one.

Mike Omotosho Scholarships MOFIS offers overseas scholarships to 10,000 Nigerian students

TheMike Omotosho Foundation International Scholarship(MOFIS) has offered tuition waivers to 10,000 Nigerian students who want to study undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Cyprus, Malaysia, India and Russia.

Speaking at the unveiling of the program, MOFIS Founder,Mike Omotosho, said it was set up to help Nigerian students gain quality education abroad.
Omotosho noted that many Nigerian students have not been able to acquire the sets of skills and knowledge that is needed by employers due to the shortfall of admission spots available.
"We have over 1.5 million candidates apply annually for admissions into universities nationwide but only about 600,000 are admitted," he said.

"Some of these unsuccessful applicants become frustrated and sometimes, resort to crimes; hence the need for meaningful access to university education has recently become indispensable in Nigeria as a result of population increase and volume of awareness of the role of the university education in the development of the individual and the nation at large."

"The foundation is committed with her partners to walk our Youth through the right path, because we believe that access to quality education is the lifeline for a bright tomorrow."

All Nigerian students with at least 5 credits in their O Level Examination are eligible.
Mike Omotosho Foundation International Scholarship was founded in 2010.

University Lecturer Caught In Female Hostel Disguised With A Veil

A lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria was apprehended Sunday night at a private female hostel in Samaru, Zaria.

Daily Trust gathered yesterday that the lecturer disguised by wearing Hijab (veil) and attempted to sneak into the hostel before he was intercepted.

A witness, Khalifa Sha’aibu, alleged that, that was not the first time the lecturer wasentering the hostel to visit his girl friend.
Sha’aibu added: “The most annoying thing is the fact that the man used Hijab. As a Muslim, I feel sad that somebody would usesomething that women of faith are known with to perpetrate crime. I wonder why the man would not get a hotel room to perpetrate his immoral act. It was a vigilante member that noticed the structure of the man and exposed him.
After he was caught, we discovered that he has been entering the hostel with the consent of the girl. The owner of the private hostel had barred men from entering the rooms.”
It was further gathered that the lecturer was handed over to a team of army personnel that are manning a check point close to the university.
Daily Trust also gathered that the officers ransacked the lecturer’s house.
When contacted, Director of Public Affairs in the university, Dr. Ismail Shehu, said he heard something like that but that no official report has been made.
He added that when an official report is received, the university will take action.
“As you know, ABU does not tolerate indiscipline. Investigation would be carried out and both the lecturer and student would be punished accordingly. There is no doubt about that,” he said.

NUC Lifts Ban On Admission Into The Programmes Of UniAbuja

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has lifted the ban on admission into the programmes of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) Centre for Distance Learning and Continuing Education (CDL&CE).

The university’s distance learning programme failed a revalidation assessment by the NUC in 2012, resulting in the ban on admission into its courses for nearly two years.

The lifting of the ban was in line with remarkable progress by the centre in addressing shortcomings that necessitated the ban. The Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, in a letter to the Vice- Chancellor of the University, Professor Michael Adikwu, dated October 12, said that the moratorium placed on admission into the university’s centre had been lifted.

The development, Okojie explained, was following a recommendation by a panel constituted by the commission for an on-site assessment, which concluded the exercise between September 2 and 5, 2015.
A statement yesterday by the university’s Deputy Registrar (Information and Publications), Waziri Garba, said that the commission approved that: “the moratorium on admission of students into the five (5) approved programmes be lifted and academic work may commence for 2015/2016 academic session.”
The five programmes approved to commence academic activities include B.Sc. Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Business Administration and Public Administration. The NUC boss advised the university to address other deficiencies pointed out in the technical report comprehensively before the expiration of the session. This, he said, will boost the Centre’s bid to secure full re-validation status for all the courses.
He added that a desk officer had been appointed by the NUC to follow up on the revalidation of outstanding deficiencies to ensure success. Commenting on the development, the Vice Chancellor UniAbuja, Professor Michael Adikwu, and the Director of the university’s Centre for Distance Learning and Continuing Education, Professor Peter Siyan, said plans were underway to reinvigorate the distance learning component of the institution with a view to regaining the confidence of critical stakeholders.
