UNIABUJA to charge N200,000 PG exam fees

Thereis disquiet at University of Abuja, following the decision of the management to introduce an examination fees regime under which students pursuing doctor of philosophy, Ph. D, and masters programmes are to pay N200,000 and N150,000, respectively.
A circular to this effect was issued by the Dean, Post-Graduate School of the university, Prof. E. J. C. Nwana.
The examination fees, considered arbitrary and exorbitant by students, are separate from the fees charged by the university for PG courses. The university management also added more than doubled fees for masters from N41,400 (Sciences) and N55,900 (Arts) to N99,500 (Sciences)and N114,000 (Arts).
The increases, according to the circular, took effect from 2014/2015 academic session and school fees are to be paid every session by the PG students and there will be no clearance if any arrears are unpaid.

Some of the PG students, who spoke to Sunday Vanguard, complained bitterly over the charges for external defence of thesis and dissertation as the university had no such fees when they were admitted.

WAEC releases SSCE, withholds 118,101 candidates’ results

The West African School Certificate, WAEC, has just released the result of the May/June 2015 Senior School Certificate Examination, SSCE, withholding 118,101 candidates’ results out of the 1.5 million students that participated in the examination.
Announcing this in Lagos at a press conference on Monday, WAEC Head of National Office, Mr. Charles Eguridu noted that the states owing WAEC were now 13, saying the candidates in public schools in the 13 states would not have their results until their state governments pay their candidates’ registration fees.
The examination body had recently raised the alarm that 19 states owed the agency about N4bn, an amount that might cripple its operations. The SSCE result is currently online to make it easier for candidates to access, using the number on the scratch card they had earlier purchased.

UI Will Admit 3,000 Candidates Out Of 33,000 Applicants For 2015/2016, Says DVC

Over 30,000 candidates that applied for admission into the University of Ibadan for the 2015/2016 academic session will not get admission.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), University of Ibadan, who made this assertion at a stakeholders’ forum, organised by the Distance Learning Centre (DLC) of the institution, said that the institution could only admit 3,000 out of over 33,000 candidates that applied for admission for 2015/2016 academic session.
She urged prospective students who met admission requirements, but could not gain admission to embrace Distance Learning to satisfy their needs of qualitative tertiary education. “If we can’t meet the need of our people through the regular face to face mode, then we should use the Open Distance Learning (ODL).
“Education drives growth and development and it must be at the centre for any nation to make advancement,” she said. Oke assured that the university would ensure qualitative and standard distance learning education, with strict adherence to the mandate of the nation’s premier university.
Prof. Francis Egbokhare at the forum delivered a paper entitled “Accessibility and Openness of the ODL Practice.” Egbokhare said that the establishment of private universities as solution to non- accessibility to university education by Nigeria youths had failed.
He said that this could be ascertained from the low patronage of private universities.
According to him, only three per cent of the total population of candidates seeking admission through JAMB choose private universities.
Egbokhare urged government to look for ways of expanding the existing ODL facilities to be able to accommodate more candidates. Similarly, Prof. Abiola Awosika in her lecture entitled, “The Importance of Technology in ODL Practice,” said that technology had made the learning world smaller so that everyone could have access to the ‘’global classroom.’’
In his welcome address, Prof. Bayo Okunade, the Director of the centre, said that the forum was to fast track the process of change, being witnessed at the centre. He also said that the centre has advanced tremendously.

“We must do it right in order to justify the purpose of our existence, and this is why we are here to brainstorm and engage ideas on both our challenges and prospects, “he said.

32,000 Candidates Qualified To Write Unilag’s 2015 Post-UTME—Official

Over 32,000 candidates will write the 2015 post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) into the University of Lagos, according to the institution’s Deputy Registrar (Information), Mr Olagoke Oke.
The examination is scheduled to hold from Aug. 12 to Aug. 14.
Oke told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday that the figure was close to four times the 9,000 that was initially posted to the institution by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
NAN reports that JAMB in collaboration with some public universities had agreed to raise the bar of the cut-off marks of their institutions from 200 to 250 for the various courses.
The development had generated an outrage among candidates, their parents and other stakeholders, who called on Federal Government to intervene.
The decision was later reversed after consultations between the Prof. Dibu Ojerinde-led JAMB and the Federal Government.
Oke said:“I want to say that all logistics toward a smooth conduct of this examination are fully in place.
“We have always been ready for situations like this and have always got it right.
.
“Before now, we were hoping to put logistics in place for the initial 9,000 candidates, but with the reversal of the decision, we now have to re-adjust and I want to say that we are fully prepared.
“All our computers and its accessories, the backups, alternative power supply as well as adequate personnel that will conduct the examination are all ready.’’
The deputy registrar said the university was compelled to extend the exercise to three days because of the large number of candidates seeking admission into the institution.
He, however, advised candidates to arrive early at the examination centres for a hitch-free exercise. (NAN)

UNILAG Lecturer Jailed For Raping 18-Year-Old Admission Seeker

A Part-time lecturer in accounting at the University of Lagos who was accused for forcefully having a carnal knowledge with an 18-year-old girl, identified as Caroline in the Yaba area is spending the weekend in Kirikiri Prison following a remand order by an Ikeja Magistrate court, after a rape charge.
The lecturer, Dr Akin Baruwa was taken to court by the Isokoko police station for raping an 18 year-old daughter of a friend of his, seeking to be shortlisted by the university for the post UTME test.
The Punch Online reported that the violated girl scored 211 in the UTME and nurses the ambition to study Mass Communication at UNILAG.
Since she failed to meet UNILAG’s high cut-off mark, the father had approached Baruwa for help.
The report said Baruwa agreed to help and took the girl with him to UNILAG on 23 July. Both of them drove out early from their Abesan Estate, in Ipaja, in the suburb of Lagos.
The admission seeking-girl did not get the assistance promised.
But she ended up being violated by Baruwa right in his office, at the university, according to child rights activist, Mrs. Esther Ogwu, whom the case was reported to by the family.
Director of the Esther Child Rights Foundation, Esther Ogwu, a social worker handling the case, said:
“I believe this lecturer had been doing this in the past. It is necessary for girls to be aware and know what to do when in a potentially dangerous situation where they may be assaulted.
“I don’t expect him (the lecturer) to admit that he raped her. I knew he would say it was consensual, but I suspect that this is not the first time he would do such thing. Let the law take its course because we don’t know how many other girls are being saved because this case is coming out to the public.”
The case has also been reported at the Office of the Public Defender under the Lagos State Ministry of Justice. The Director of the OPD, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, said the case would be followed to its logical conclusion.
