Delta State Polytechnic Tragedy Corpse of 22-yr-old student found floating on river

Bakpo Otueme was an Engineering student of the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe, until he died while skimming with friends in the River Ethiope in Oghara, Delta State. His friends said nothing about his death until his corpse was found floating on the river.

A 22-year-old Engineering student of theDelta State Polytechnic, Otefe,Bakpo Otueme, has drowned in a swimming mishap.

Otueme’s corpse was discovered floating on theRiver Ethiopein Oghara, Delta State, at the weekend, three days after he left home, Leadership reports.
According to the testimony of a young man who identified himself asOghenetega, Otueme death was a swimming tragedy.

Oghenetega said he had gone to the river with the deceased and another friend to wash clothes after which decided to take a swim.
"After we finished washing the clothes, we decided to have some fun in the river for about 30 minutes,” he said.
He said the student, who showed visible difficulties moving in the water, having to cling to a log for support, refused to get out of the water despite his entreaties.
Unfortunately, a turbulent wave swept him into a deep part of the river where he lost his grip of the log.
Oghenetega said their attempts to rescue him failed.
He said they returned home without telling anyone of the tragedy because of fear that he might have died or was just playing a prank and admitted that his decision to say the truth was influenced by pressure from the deceased's family.

Muhammadu Sanusi II Prioritise education to make youth self-reliant, UNIBEN Chancellor tells FG

The Emir, who was recently appointed the new Chancellor of theUniversity of Benin(UNIBEN) made the call on Monday at the formal presentation of his appointment letter into the position at his palace.
He said only with education will the youth be able to contribute their quota to the nation.

“Education should be given the priority attention, it deserves to empower the youth to enable them to be self-reliant and contribute towards the development of the country," Sanusi said.
The former CBN governor said quality, not quantity should be the focus.

“We should not mind the number of universities but the quality of education the universities give to our youth to make them self-reliant.’’.

Sanusi appreciated his appointment and promised to contribute the development of the university.

The Minister of Education, MalamIbrahim Shekarau, who presented the letter, said the "appointment is an honour done to Kano, myself and the Emir who is the father of all of us."
President Goodluck Jonathan only last week approved the appointment of new Chancellorsfor all the 38 Federal Universities in the country.

LAUTECH Notice On Payment Of Tuition Fee For 2014-2015 Session

This is to inform candidates in the underlisted categories that freshers portal will be re-opened as a LAST chance for payment of tuition fee between 12:00 midnight on Sunday 10th May and 12:00 midnight on Wednesday 13th May, 2015.

Concerned candidates are therefore advised to pay within the stipulated time, failing which the provisional admission offer will be forfeited.

(a) EX-pre-Degree Students that have JAMB and LAUTECH admission letters.

(B-) UTME Candidates that have LAUTECH admission letter and JAMB admission letter that read LAUTECH, and are already verified.

(C) Regularised Pre-degree students who have JAMB and LAUTECH admission letters.
Any Candidate who does not belong in the listed categories above and pays tuition fee does so at his/her own risk.

However, any candidate who does not fall in the listed categories above, who has LAUTECH admission letter or JAMB admission letter that specified LAUTECH, but whose O’ Level results have not been verified or due to any technical problem is denied access on freshers portal to make payments should report to complain immediately at Room 5 in the Academic Affairs Unit, not later than Tuesday May 12, 2015.

EKSU Students Get Scholarship For Outstanding Performance

Cameroon – American Company (CAMAC) a Nigerian-based Allied Energy Company has awarded scholarship to two EKSU students in Geology Department and Mechanical Engineering for outstanding performance.
The recipients are Adebayo Abiodun Samuel who is currently on top of his class in the 400 level Geology class with a Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) of 4.08, Adebayo has maintained a consistent academic progress since his 100 level days.

The second scholarship recipient, Aderemi Adebayo Ayobami is the best 200 level student in Mechanical Engineering Department.

Presenting the two students to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oladipo Aina who was represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Ibiyinka Ogunlade, the Head of Department, Geology, and Head of Department, Mechanical Engineering, Dr. O. C. Ademilua and Dr. I. O. Oluwaleye respectively described the students as focused and brilliant who gave extraordinary attention to their studies.

The Executive Director, Corporate services of CAMAC, Mr. Olayide Olufemi said Ekiti State University was among selected Universities in Nigeria chosen for their Academic track record across all fields especially in Geology and Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Olufemi said the petroleum company has awarded similar scholarship to University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife and Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) with Ekiti State University as the fourth institution in the hierarchy of benefitting Universities.

The Assistant General Manager, Legal services of the company, Miss Gbemi Bamigboye presented each of the recipients a cheque of one hundred thousand naira each.
The Vice-Chancellor, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Ibiyinka Ogunlade thanked the company for its benevolence, adding that students of Ekiti State University has distinguished themselves recently in various international and national competitions.
Prof. Ogunlade also presented the team from CAMAC Petroleum Company with gifts while she urged the award recipients to keep the flag flying. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development) Prof. Victor Olufemi Adeoluwa in his remarks noted that the scholarship award further revealed the academic strength of Ekiti State University students.

ABU Releases 2014/2015 Postgraduate Supplementary Admission List

Authorities of the Ahmadu Bello University has release its Post-graduate supplementary admission list of successful candidates who have been offered provisional admission into various postgraduate degree of the Ahmadu Bello University for the 2014/2015 academic session.

Akwa Ibom Varsity Produces 2 First Class Graduates

Akwa Ibom State University(AKSU), on Saturday, 2nd May, 2015 held her maiden convocation ceremony at the Main Campus of the University, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin. The institution which produced 40 graduands from the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences had the following classes of Degrees: 2 First Class, 17 Second Class Upper, 19 Second Class Lower, 2 Third Class.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Eno J. Ibanga was filled with thanks to God and to the Governor, His Excellency, Chief Dr. Godswill Obot Akpabio, CON, for the privilege given to him to serve humanity. In his address, he acknowledged the contributions of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. S. W. Petters, FAS, who through commitment oversee the successful take-off, growth and sustainable development of the institution to the point of obtaining accreditation for the Faculty of natural and Applied Sciences.

According to him, he is proud to be the Vice-Chancellor graduating the first set of students of Akwa Ibom State University and said his mission and vision is to make Akwa Ibom State University a world class and top-ranked first class institution of excellence in all programmes through knowledge production, dissemination, teaching, research and service to mankind. He urged the pioneer graduands, who were found worthy in character and learning, to be good ambassadors of Akwa Ibom State University and exhibit exemplary virtue which will distinguish them from the larger society.

The Chancellor of the University and Emir of Kazaure, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Najib Hussaini Adamu, CON, earlier in his address, thanked the out-gone Vice-Chancellor, Prof. S. W. Petters for his tremendous contributions in nurturing the university and stressed the importance of acquiring knowledge. He called on the staff of the university to intensify effort on delivering excellent and sustainable education on the students so as to produce self-employed graduates.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Akwa Ibom State University Governing Council, Obong (Engr) Asuquo S. Udofia, in his address, promised a holistic and conducive learning environment for the students and called on all stakeholders to lend support for this good to be achieved.

The ceremony climaxed when the graduands received their certificates and the State Governor, His Excellency, Chief Dr. Godswill Akpabio, CON, awarded the two (2) first class graduands scholarship to study anywhere in the world, and a million naira each. Also, a hundred thousand naira was given to each of the other 38 graduands.

The ceremony had in attendance the Governor and Visitor & wife, The Deputy Governor, The Governor-Elect and Deputy Governor-Elect, the SSG, members of the State Executive Council, Permanent Secretaries, the political class, Prominent sons and daughters of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria, Royal fathers, Religious Leaders and the general public.

The Convocation ceremonies commenced on Tuesday, 28th April, 2015, with the Vice-Chancellor’s Press Briefing and the Convocation Lecture on Thursday, 30th April, 2015 titled The Past as a Guide to our Future by Prof. (Emeritus) Reuben K. Udo, a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan.

OAU Lecturer Kidnapped, Driver Killed, N70m Demanded

Gunmen abducted Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU lecturer, killed his driver, burnt his car and demanded for N70m ransom.

A lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Dr. Femi Omisore, who was on his way to attend a funeral at Oye Ekiti in Ekiti State, was kidnapped by unidentified persons at the weekend.
The lecturer, it was learned, works at the Department of Environmental Design Ma-nagement of the institution.
His captors, who were said to be armed with guns, were said to have trailed him for a while.
The driver was said to have noticed them and tried to evade the gang, but the abductors managed to waylay Omisore’s vehicle.
On catching up with him, the hoodlums were said to have killed the driver out of anger and took Omisore to an unknown place.
The gunmen, it was further gathered, fired several shots at the petrol tank of the lecturer’s car and ensured that the car caught fire before they left the scene.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, OAU chapter, Dr. Caleb Aborisade, confirmed the incident.
Aborisade said, “According to the information I gathered from his family, Dr. Femi Omisore was kidnapped on Friday evening. He was going for a funeral ceremony in Oye Ekiti.
“I learnt that a member of his department was burying his father in Oye Ekiti and he was travelling there when he was kidnapped.
“The kidnappers used his telephone to call his wife this on Sunday morning and they demanded N70m ransom.
“We are not politicians; where do they expect us to get such amount?”
He appealed to Omsiore’s abductor to release the lecturer.
He said the family was not rich and could not afford to pay such a huge amount of money.
The abduction was also confirmed to our correspondent on the telephone by the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Osun State Polytechnic, Iree chapter, Mr. Dotun Omisore.
The union leader is a nephew of the abducted lecturer.
The ASUP chairman expressed concern at the way lecturers and members of their families were becoming targets of abduction.
He called on the government and security agencies in the country to do more to ensure security of lives and property of every Nigerian, saying kidnapping was becoming too rampant.
It will be recalled that gunmen had in December 2014 kidnapped the wife of ASUU Chairman, Osun State University chapter, Mrs. Funmilayo Abiona.
