MTN Moves to Withdraw Digital Library Donated to UNILAG

UNILAG VC, Professor Rahmon Bello
MTN Nigeria Communications Limited (MTNN) moves to withdraw the abandoned Universities Connect Library at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos.
The digital library was donated to UNILAG in 2005 when internet enabled phones were still a luxury. The digital library has been placed under lock and key in the last five years and much to the dissatisfaction of the donor organisation.
In-house sources at the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) office of the telecommunication outfit informed newsmen that the evacuation processes would begin soon, even as it was gathered that troubled Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo Campus may be the new beneficiary.
MTN Corporate Social Executive, Akinwale Goodluck, recently at the Lagos State Support Our School Initiative Breakfast Meeting, said the world-class facility, a pride of his organisation, had been locked up for years, because the school management could just not keep to agreements in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2004.

Goodluck, who gave credit to the Lagos State government and the ministry of education on effective partnership till date, said a state-owned tertiary institution would be the new beneficiary of the digital library when it was retrieved from UNILAG.
“We are happy to transfer this facility to Lagos State,” Goodluck said.
Authorities of UNILAG, however maintained that they had given the telecommunication outfit their blessing to remove the facility, after sections of the second agreement were breached by the mobile outfit.

Muslims secondary school students have been urged to remain morally upright, focused and self-confident so as to have a better future.
The Amir (President) of the Yaba Area Council of theMuslim Students Society of Nigeria(MSSN), MallamSulaiman AbdulRaheem, gave the admonition while speaking at a Youth Conference to commemorate the World Children’s Day at theYaba College of Technology(YABATECH) yesterday.
AbdulRaheem urged the students to be morally and spiritually upright so as to excel and build a better future.

“What you do today would determine what you would become tomorrow," AbdulRaheem said.
“To secure a better future, you must first have confidence in yourselves.
"The second is to be focused. Never lose focus on whatever you are doing."
The Amir also advised them to be cautious of the company they keep.

"Also, at every point in your life, you must be conscious of who your friends are and to have total reliance in Allah for He alone knows what is going to be."

EKSU organises entrepreneurship orientation for students

The Ekiti State University (EKSU) has made a second attempt to entrench vocational education in the school curriculum by organizing an entrepreneurship orientation for its students with N100,000 loans for capital.

The Ekiti State University(EKSU) has made a second attempt to entrench vocational education in the school curriculum by organizing an entrepreneurship orientation for its students.

EKSU had two months ago introduced a compulsory course titled Entrepreneurship Skill Course (ESC) to students.
Students however protested, faulting the program after they were asked to pay N1000 charges which they labelled extortion.
Now the management is making a second attempt.

The ESC course Director, Dr Abel Awe, said students have a lot to gain from the course which will begin in the current semester.
He noted that the management structured the course to ensure that students go through the theoretical aspects before the practical phase.
“Students must understand the reason they need to take the course and the benefits they can gain from it," Awe said.
"Those in 300-Level and below are the major beneficiaries of this course, because they would have to go through two theoretical aspects before they are allowed to practise.”

A Faculty of art student who spoke to The Nation said the course has no certification and increases students' academic load.
But Awe noted that the course was aimed at making students self-reliant on graduation, not giving addition certification.
“We don’t want to be producing graduates to be unemployed; we want to make our product to be employers of labour,” he said.
He added that start-up capital will not be a problem for the students because the institution had arranged with the Ekiti State Chamber of Commerce and Nigeria Development Bank for to the students to access soft loans of N100,000.
The courses covered are barbing, fish farming and snail rearing, fashion designing, bead making, make-up artistry, catering, furnishing and carpentry, graphic art designing, brick making and printing.

READ FULL TEXT OF THE LETTER:
AN OPEN LETTER TO THE OUTGOING PRESIDENT (PRESIDENT GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN GCFR, BNER, GCON)
Dear President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCON)
By way of introduction, I am Comr. Arerebo Salaco Yerinmene Peter's Jr, a bonafide son of Ijaw Nation (Niger Deltan), from Ayakoromo and Ogodobiri town, Burutu and Bomadi local government area in Delta State and above all am a beneficiary in one of your astounding scholarship program under the management of Dr. Patrick Akpobolekemi Ziakede. I am writing to you from the depths of my heart because how much I wanted to, I was not able to express these to you in person (one-on-one).
Mr. President As your tenure as the president Federal Republic of Nigeria has come to a close end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your hard and commitment in building a strong, prosperous and a United Nigeria although is crystal clear that you face a lot of distraction (sentiments, criticism and security challenges) intentionally cause by people that doesn't want the betterment of Nigeria, who want political leadership for selfish and self-promotional reasons. Mr. President, have these! Indeed, you have epitomized these qualities never wavering no matter how vicious and hurtful the political and personal attacks have been. No doubt, your faith guided you and you let it!
Leaders the world over think about two paramount things: the PRIMACY of the citizens’ needs and the LEGACY they leave behind long after they have gone. It seems, Mr. President, you think more about the two mentioned above and less about staying in power because you make it loud and clear to all Nigerians that "The blood of one Nigerian is far worth than your political ambition. There is one thing you have to remember as you disengage as the president, come May 29th and on: Time will come when you’ll be needed in the world either by political necessity, biological, peaceful necessity and physiological necessity. Power ends, but your legacy will not end regardless of what it is. You might will continue to go higher in history as the first President from the Niger Delta region (South-South) that rebrands democracy in the country; you will surely be remember for generations to come. The onus is on you!
Mr. President , the recent presidential election that you lost shows that you are a man of your word, a true and transparent democrat, you deserve international recognition as a peace loving man, a man to be called world leader and legend of our time. Thank you very much for the free and fair election you delivered, for accepting the defeat and for congratulating your successor GMB, it shows and prove to me that you are not biased in politics, peace loving, violence free and selfless leader, for this, history will be very kind to you and you will continue to be remembered by the new generational leaders as a true democrat, you have won the heart of all Nigerians’.
Mr. President you take a step that will be used as an instrument to tackle violence, you have surprise the entire world with your bold sportsmanship. I assure you that as a new generation upcoming leader I will surely copy your good leadership step and you will forever remain in my heart and as a president you have proved to me that politics is not a ‘do or die’ affair.
Mr. President I haven't said this, you are far Commendable for the Nigerian Seafarers Development scholarship program, the continuation of Presidential amnesty scholarship program and others. It's has help to expand the growth of human capacity building in the country, its affect mostly the youths and in two to three years’ time Nigeria will be boastful about indigenous seafarers which is a plus to the maritime sector.
It's my very great pleasure to thank you for your dedication and the great job you have accomplished in your five (5) year term as president of Nigeria and wish you all the very best in your future endeavours and we look forward to your on-going involvement in Building Nigeria as a better nation.
In short, Mr. President, you have warmed and inspired me how to become a good leader and I bid you farewell as my President with a sense of relief for you that you can take a well-deserved break from the helm of our planet, but a tinge of sadness, too, that I will be losing your steady hand and noble, purity of vision as the leader of the free.
May God bless Nigeria
Yours Compatriot,
Arerebo Salaco Yerinmene Peter's Jr.

Gov. Aregbesola Finally Sacks Osun University VC

The vice chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), has been sacked by the state government for alleged financial mismanagement.
The appointments of Professor Bashir Okesina, and two other principal officers of the state institution have henceforth been terminated by the governing body of UNIOSUN.

The sack of the top three principal officers, according to Vanguard, follows a visit by a panel set-up by Governor Rauf Aregbesola, to investigate alleged financial mismanagement by the officers
Reacting to the sack, the UNIOSUN chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has faulted the decision of the institution’s governing body on the grounds that, it violated the principle of fairness.

The union maintained that, the institution was acting as a judge in their own case by arriving at a decision before the findings by the panel constituted by the governor were submitted.
