EKSU organises entrepreneurship orientation for students

The Ekiti State University (EKSU) has made a second attempt to entrench vocational education in the school curriculum by organizing an entrepreneurship orientation for its students with N100,000 loans for capital.

The Ekiti State University(EKSU) has made a second attempt to entrench vocational education in the school curriculum by organizing an entrepreneurship orientation for its students.

EKSU had two months ago introduced a compulsory course titled Entrepreneurship Skill Course (ESC) to students.
Students however protested, faulting the program after they were asked to pay N1000 charges which they labelled extortion.
Now the management is making a second attempt.

The ESC course Director, Dr Abel Awe, said students have a lot to gain from the course which will begin in the current semester.
He noted that the management structured the course to ensure that students go through the theoretical aspects before the practical phase.
“Students must understand the reason they need to take the course and the benefits they can gain from it," Awe said.
"Those in 300-Level and below are the major beneficiaries of this course, because they would have to go through two theoretical aspects before they are allowed to practise.”

A Faculty of art student who spoke to The Nation said the course has no certification and increases students' academic load.
But Awe noted that the course was aimed at making students self-reliant on graduation, not giving addition certification.
“We don’t want to be producing graduates to be unemployed; we want to make our product to be employers of labour,” he said.
He added that start-up capital will not be a problem for the students because the institution had arranged with the Ekiti State Chamber of Commerce and Nigeria Development Bank for to the students to access soft loans of N100,000.
The courses covered are barbing, fish farming and snail rearing, fashion designing, bead making, make-up artistry, catering, furnishing and carpentry, graphic art designing, brick making and printing.
