NOUN protests exclusion of graduates from NYSC scheme

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has protested the exclusion of its graduates from the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) scheme.
The vice chancellor, NOUN, Prof Abdalla Adamu, appealed to the National Universities Commission (NUC) to intervene and prevail on the authorities of the NYSC to allow NOUN students participate in the scheme to enable them contribute their quota to nation building.
Adamu, who led a full squad of NOUN’s management to the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Abuja, yesterday, said the exclusion was contrary to the promotion of patriotism and unity in the country.
He said it was an irony that the most inclined of the nation’s graduates were excluded from a programme designed to engender patriotism and unity.
According to him, “It is national news that NOUN graduates are excluded from participation in the NYSC scheme, although exclusion letters are often provided.

“ In NOUN, we train graduates with nationalistic outlook in Nigetia , and can boast to be the only university in Nigeria where people from all the LGAs in Nigeria are represented as students.
“However, this nationalistic outlook cultivated by our students is dampened by the painful fact of their exclusion from the NYSC scheme.
“The desire of NOUN graduates is to participate fully in the NYSC scheme and contribute their quota to the development of their nation. We are sure that with the appropriate intervention of the NUC led by you, this problem will be over,” he added.
Abdalla further disclosed that NOUN has suspended its law programme, following the exclusion of graduates of Law programme from attending the mandatory Law School of Nigeria by the Council of Legal Education (CLE).
He stressed that the suspension of admission into the programme followed an advice by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to stop admissions pending the resolution of the inability of its graduates to go to Law School.

150 Courses Unaccredited In Nigerian Universities — FULL LIST

At least 150 undergraduate academic programmes in Nigeria’s public and private universities are unaccredited, PREMIUM TIMES can authoritatively report today.
According to the 2016 accreditation status report by the National Universities Commission (NUC), exclusively obtained by this newspaper, the unaccredited courses are domiciled in 37 of 143 universities in the country.
The Quality Assurance Department of the NUC is in charge of accrediting courses in the universities.
For a course to be accredited, the NUC says, it must meet the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) that has been drawn up by the commission.
Such a course, officials say, must have qualified faculty members, good learning environment and adequate teaching materials – equipment, books and journals.
The NUC says accreditation of courses is necessary to ensure “employers and other members of the community that Nigerian graduates of all academic programmes have attained an acceptable level of competency in their areas of specialization.”
The commission says it is also important to certify courses to assure “the international community that the programmes offered in Nigerian Universities are of high standards and that graduates of the institutions are adequate for employment and further studies.”
According to the NUC, pre-accreditation activities include drawing up a list of academic programmes to be certified, compilation of list of panel chairmen/members, time-tabling, budgeting and organizing the accreditation coordination meeting for panel chairmen and members in a simulation workshop.
The post-accreditation activities, according to the commission, include analyzing accreditation reports (technical and administrative), ranking of programmes and universities based on their accreditation status, publishing of accreditation status of programmes, issuance of certificates to programmes that earned Full and Interim accreditation results.
PREMIUM TIMES’ analysis of the accreditation result for 2016 showed that 150 courses are currently unaccredited in 13 federal universities, 16 state universities and eight private universities in the country.
The affected universities include universities such as the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; University of Benin, University of Jos, University of Calabar and the University of Abuja which has 15 of its courses, including Law, unaccredited.

FG's Decision To Change Polytechnics To Universities Will Not Augur Well - Stakeholders

The Federal Government recently directed that the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) by the nation’s polytechnics be abolished.
It equally stated that the polytechnics will become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities Councils.
If this is implemented now, it means that the award of HND will only be limited to only the students currently admitted for the programmes. Subsequently, polytechnics will be limited to the award of National Diploma (ND) and any student who wish to further his or her studies after obtaining ND award will have to pursue the award of Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) through the proximate university.
This directive by the FG has however attracted mixed reactions.
While some are in support of this development going by the fact it will help resolve the HND-B.Sc discrimination, some lecturers and stake holders are of the opinion that this move will result in the mass sack of polytechnic lecturers as many of them may not have the qualifications to fit into the new system and many not be able to improve their qualifications immediately due to constraints of time, age , finance and even unfavourable structures.
According to the Acting Head, Mass Communication Department, UNILAG, Dr. Oluruntola Sunday, the move by Federal Ministry of Education will not augur well as certain machineries ought to have been put in place before declaring the outright scrapping of HND by polytechnics.
Another senior lecturer, Dr. Tayo Poopola lamented that the constant change of policies without getting people’s opinions has been the bane in the education sector.
" Nigeria, who operate a democratic rule, ought to set agenda for public discussion before declaring a new policy. " He stated.
