Corps members at the Lagos state NYSC orientation camp will enjoy improved power supply as Globacom donates a 100 KVA power generating set for their comfort.

The company’s Business Director, Lagos State Division, Kunle Akanmu said the idea was to boost power supply at the camp to enable the corps members connect to the world outside the camp.

“We are aware of the need by youths to have regular access to electricity so that they can have unrestrained access to data and voice call services," he said.

"They need to call their loved ones when they are on the mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme and also be on the social media regularly.

“It is this knowledge that has moved us to donate this generating set so that they can stay abreast of happenings around the globe without fear of power interruptions,” he said.

He said the donation was made as part of the company's efforts to give back to the society and an evidence of its commitment to support and empower Nigerian youths in various communities across the country.

Mr. Gordon Bozimo, the chairman of the board, gave this assurance while addressing the Batch ‘A’ corps members at the NYSC orientation camp in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.

He said the board was aware of the operational challenges facing some of the orientation camps in the country. He identified poor response to statutory obligations, insecurity and rejection of corps members by some organisations as challenges facing the board.

He said, “We cannot lose consciousness of the plethora of these debilitating operational hiccups. In fact, challenges such as infrastructural deficiency in some camps, poor response to statutory obligations by other tiers of government, rejection of corps members, insecurity, etc. stare us in the face.

“These, more often than not, have always stirred up apprehension and lobby for preferential posting by prospective corps members, and in some instances, their parents/guardians.”

He, however, charged stakeholders to ensure that the NYSC scheme does not die in the face of the challenges.

He said, “It therefore behoves all stakeholders to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that this noble scheme does not get drown with these turbulences. This is where the role of the NYSC National Governing Board becomes very crucial and essential.”

Meanwhile, the Director General, National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi, on Friday warned military and paramilitary personnel at the ongoing national orientation camps across the country, that under no circumstances should they assault any corps members at their various states.

Olawumi, who reacted to the alleged maltreatment of a Batch ‘A’ corps member, Mr. Olubumi Adeyera, which was said to have been carried out by some security operatives in the orientation camp, gave the charge when he visited the Magaji Dan-Yamusa orientation camp in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

FCTA condemned the barricade of its entrance by some UNIABUJA students

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Friday condemned the barricade of its entrance by some students of the University of Abuja on May 14.
A statement issued in Abuja by Mr Nosike Ogbuenyi, Senior Assistant to the Minister of FCT, said the students were led by Friday Adayi, the university’s Chairman of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
According to the statement, the students made untennable demands that should have been channelled to the Federal Ministry of Education.
It alleged that the students had requested the FCTA to purchase a vehicle for their association, solve the water supply challenge at the university’s mini campus and furnish the common room of the association.
“It was wrong for the students to attempt to use force to compel government to fulfill requests that were not statutory responsibilities of the FCTA.
“The point should be stressed that it is not part of FCTA’s official responsibility to furnish the NANS chairman’s common room in the university or to provide internal infrastructure in federal universities.
“Similarly, government action on the kind of demands made by the students is discretionary and dependent on resource availability.
“Nonetheless, FCTA cherishes robust relationship with NANS, even though it frowns at any attempt to hold it to ransom by students over welfare and logistics demands by individuals or groups,’’ it said.
The statement further said that in spite of the untennable demands by the students, the FCT Education Secretary, Alhaji Kabir Usman, met with them and promised to look into their demands.
“The secretary announced that the request by the students for a donation of a vehicle to the FCT NANS was receiving attention and would be granted if funds become available,’’ it said.
It advised the students to desist from lawlessness in pursuing their demands, pledging that the administration would continue to support them as much as practicable.
“ It will equally continue to give logistics support to students’ organizations such as NANS provided that due process is followed and sufficient notice given in all cases.
“While we are doing this, we call on parents to always watch their children and wards closely by calling them to order whenever the need arises,’’ the statement said. (NAN)

Imo Polytechnic Staff Drag Rector to Okija Shrine

The crisis of confidence rocking Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo, Ohaji/Egbema Local Council Area of the state, has degenerated to the point of the institution’s Rector, Rev. Fr. Wence Madu, being dragged to the dreaded Okija Shrine in Anambra State.
The invitation letter, which was allegedly extended to the Rector, was signed by one Ukaegbu N. Ogidi, who claimed that there was a complaint of injustice against Rev. Fr. Madu.
While stating that any respondent coming to Ogwugwu Okija must come with clean hands, Ogidi also informed the Rector that “Ogwugwu kills only those whose hands are not clean, especially those who committed evil against their fellow human beings at work places, churches, mosques, markets and other public places.”
The letter also claimed that Rev. Fr. Madu knew about the issue at stake, “but turned around to conspire and deal with an innocent person.”
The Rector was equally reminded in the mail that he “should feel free to reverse the injustice with your conspirators and collaborators against the complainants to avoid coming toOgwugwuand other unpleasant consequences.”
The custodians of the shrine similarly informed the Rector that he should on arrival, look for the Chief Priest for briefing and other formalities.
Then the threat: “But where you fail to come because of any reason, we shall come to your residence or office. The truth must be uncovered at all cost.”
WhenVanguardvisited the Rector’s office, yesterday, to ascertain if he got such an invitation or not, somebody who claimed to be a staff of the office said the Imo Polytechnic boss was not in the office.
