IG sets up website to tackle police corruption

Jolaoye Toye, an assistant superintendent of police, who represented the IGP at the event, said IGP Arase is determined to rid the Force of corruption.

“This platform is a welcomed development and it has the backing of the IGP. It is worthy to note that IGP Solomon Arase has zero tolerance for corruption. There is a team of policemen at the Force Headquarters, Abuja who respond quickly to complaints on this platform. Cases are investigated and the IGP intervenes in these cases. We don’t take sides and we don’t demand money for investigation. We carry out investigation professionally,”  he said.

IGP Arase also stated that the force has taken steps to stop the recruitment of bad eggs into the institution by reviewing the recruitment process.

“We are appealing to members of the public to give the police a chance. A lot of changes are taking place in the Nigeria police and we urge the citizens to be patient with the police. We have begun a review of the recruitment process so that persons who do not have any business with policing will not join the Force. We urge citizens to support the police and stop giving bribe to officers to do their job. We assure citizens of utmost confidentiality when they report cases to us.

“In the area of roadblocks across the country, IGP Arase maintained that roadblocks remained banned but the police will continue to mount checkpoints to stop criminals.

“We don’t have roadblocks. What we have are checkpoints and they are meant to check vehicles. These checkpoints have been used to intercept criminals but citizens are urged not to give officers on checkpoints any money. If they demand money, citizens can take the policeman’s name and number and report to us,”  he said.

Gabriel Akinremi, the programme officer CLEEN foundation presented the unique features of the ‘stopthebribe’ platform.

He said citizens can use their mobile phones, smart phones, computer and other internet enabled devices to access social media tools like twitter, Facebook and interactive mobile applications to report cases of bribery and corruption.

He said: “The unique features of the stopthebribe.net is that it is built on Ushahidi platform. It has multiple data streams, easy collation of information via different mediums (sms, email, Twitter, Facebook and web-forms(Skype). Interactive mapping and dynamic timeline which involves tracking reports on the map over time and filters data by time and location”.

Blessing Ibiri, the senior programme officer CLEEN Foundation said the platform is a unique tool to report grievances and cases of corruption and also commendation of officers who have performed well on the job. She added that citizens can also report cases in local languages.

Like WAEC... NECO plans partial introduction of CBT exam mode in 2016

Students sitting for the National Examination Council (NECO) organized Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) will be tested using the Computer-Based Test (CBT) system starting from 2016.

Students sitting for the National Examination Council (NECO) organized Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) will be tested using the Computer-Based Test (CBT) system starting from 2016.

The Chairman of the NECO Governing Board, Dr Paddy Njoku, said this on Thursday during the board's monitoring visit to the Model Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja.

According to him the CBT will be introduced in the coming year.

"We will introduce CBT in papers that need computer in the next exams, but some other subjects are either practical or essay; so you cannot put everything under CBT," he said.

NECO Registrar, Prof. Abdulrashid Garba, also affirmed that the Council will use the CBTT system in 2016.

This is coming a week after the Head of National Office (HNO) of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Dr Charles Eguridu, said it will not be possible to fully adopt the CBT at the moment because of the variables involved.

Police Trouble Boyfriend of missing 22-yr-old UNILAG students arrested

A twenty-three-year-old dancer, Samson Babarinde, and his friends have been arrested by Lagos police over the disappearance of his 22-year-old lover Bunmi Oluwa.

A twenty-three-year-old dancer, Samson Babarinde, and his friends have been arrested by Lagos police over the disappearance of his 22-year-old lover Bunmi Oluwa.

Student Pulse gathered that Oluwa, 300-level student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has been missing since Tuesday May 12.

The student had told her aunty, who she lived with in the Lekki area of Lagos, that she was going to school.

She instead headed to a bar in Small Kuramo community where Babarinde and his friends, Patrick Okechukwu and Lucky Onuah, work as dancers.

It was reported that Babarinde took the student to his house in Ijora and housed her for a few days.

Meanwhile, her family had been searching for her and her father, Alhaji Taofeeq, eventually reported the incident at the Ilasan Police Station.

But the suspect told police that he sent Oluwa packaging after a few days and is now unsire of her present location.

“We met each other at Oganla bar in Small Kuramo. I wooed her and she accepted," he said.

"She told me she would be coming to my house every Friday and be leaving on Monday.

“She came to my house in Ijora on Wednesday.

"The following day, her sister told her on the phone that she should bring her N15,000.

"But Bunmi (Oluwa) said she did not want to go home without the money.

"When I learnt that her mum was coming here, I told her to go.

"I have not seen her since then.”

His friend, Okechukwu said he had advised Babarinde against harbouring the missing student.

“Bunmi came to the bar that fateful day and Samson (Babarinde) said she was going to pass the night with him.

"Onuah and I advised him against it, but he ignored us. I did not know about her whereabouts after then."

According to reports, the Police are still conducting investigations.
