No plans to scrap NYSC – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday in Abuja pledged that his administration will take all necessary actions to maintain and improve the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme as a functional vehicle for the promotion of national unity and integration.
President Buhari gave the assurance after receiving a briefing from officials of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development led by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Rabi Jimeta.

The President affirmed his confidence and trust in the programme, saying that the objective for which the scheme was established in 1973 was still very relevant for national development now.

“I firmly believe in NYSC and I think it should remain a national programme to promote integration.

“Whenever I go home to Daura, I look out for Corps members from Lagos, Aba and other parts of the country.

“I am always thrilled to learn that except for the NYSC, some of them have never left their states of origin to visit other cities in the country,” President Buhari said.
Mrs. Jimeta told the President that the increasing number of NYSC participants posed a challenge to the scheme due to the dwindling revenue, from the national budget, to cater for their needs.

She told the President that the annual enrolment of corps participants had increased from 2,364 at inception in 1974 to 229,016 in 2014.

“Given the increasing number of tertiary institutions, our projection is that the number of corps participants may rise to 300,000 by year 2020,’’ she said.
The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier-General Johnson Olawumi, told the President that there were plans to make the scheme voluntary and reduce the corps population to make the programme more sustainable.

He disclosed that though over 11,000 candidates were eligible for the examination, only the very best would be admitted subject to NUC’s acceptance as the University has a current carrying capacity to admit 2,834 persons into its existing 39 departments.

NUT Blast JAMB’s 150 Cut-off Marks For Polytechnics, Colleges

Nigeria Union of Teachers has express complete disapproval of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board policy to place cut-off marks for students seeking admission into Universities at 180 and 150 for those seeking admission into Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.
The General Secretary of the NUT, Obong Obong made the disclosure in a statement signed by the union, describing the policy as derogatory, and highly discriminatory.
NUT explained that the policy is targeted “at demeaning and lowering the professional status of teachers with its concomitant negative effect on the attainment of quality education in the country.
“It is of great disservice to the education sector where the best brains and students of distinction are placed in other courses while those with lower grades are pushed into teaching,” he said.
The union further called for an immediate reversal of the policy adding that the government must ensure only students of distinction are admitted to be trained as teachers in all educational institutions in the county.
Mr. Obong said in most advanced and developed countries, it is considered that a teacher’s ability to disseminate knowledge to students is dependent on his sound intellectual capability.
He explained that the government deliberately sourced for people with lower educational content to become teachers only to turn around and blame them for poor delivery.
“If this is allowed to stand, government should take full responsibility for the resultant short comings that may be observed in our educational institutions in future from those teachers,” he said.
He said that NUT has in abundance very brilliant and effective teachers currently in service who should be nurtured for effective service delivery .
“We however wish to warn that the teaching profession must not be made an all comers affair,” he said.
