UNIBEN don tasks Nigerians on blood screening exercise

A professor of hematology and consultant hematologist, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof Halim Daye, has advised students and Nigerians to undergo regular blood screening in order to live a long life.
He stated this during the university’s 159th inaugural lecture tagged: “We should pay more attention to our blood or else.”
Halim bemoaned nonchalant attitude of some Nigerians, saying: “Many Nigerians are concerned about their outward appearance. They don’t care about what flows in their system. Many persons do not even know their blood group. Sad, some persons get married these days without Blood testing thereby endangering the lives of their children.”
He said that regular blood screening will save people from contracting many diseases.
Daye added that many blood related diseases can be managed, if detected early, advising people to undergo a full blood screening test in, at least, in six months.
While calling for the provision of infrastructure to run blood test in health centres nationwide, he pleaded with relevant authorities to invest in the training of hematologist.
He also called on the government to declare a state of emergency on Hepatitis B Virus, saying that the disease is “40 times more infectious than HIV/AIDS and affects one in every four Nigerians.”
He advised the media and non-governmental agencies to enlighten the people on the need to undergo regular blood test.
Prof Faraday Orumwense, the vice-chancellor of the university, who chaired the lecture, said the recommendations will be submitted to the appropriate quarters, calling on the audience to spread the message far and wide.

Educationist wants better training for teachers

The proprietress of Lissie Schools, Ogun State, Mrs. Elizabeth Bolaji, has stressed the need for better training of teachers.
Bolaji, who spoke during the school’s 20th anniversary, prize giving day and graduation ceremonies, noted that well trained teachers would contribute significantly training of pupils.
She said, “Teachers need to be well-trained and dedicated. Agreed they need good salaries, they must also have passion for the job. If teachers do not show enough commitment to the profession, it will affect the performance of their pupils.
“Challenges will always come but the ability to withstand them is what determines the quality in teachers. They should be patient and love their pupils. Those in the profession should see it as an opportunity to raise future leaders.
Insisting on good training for teachers, Bolaji said that there was also need for schools to be organising regular seminars for them.
The educationist also advised the graduating pupils to continue to be of good character and worthy ambassadors of the school.
She added, “The next phase of your lives has many distractions and challenges. It, therefore, demands that you need to remain focused in order to accomplish your desires and goals in life.”
Commending parents for their supports, she noted that no school would succeed without the support of parents and guardians.

Educationist seeks value reorientation for children

An educationist, Princess Titilade Ijiwole, has called for the reorientation of pupils, saying it will help check the decadence and corruption in the country.
Ijiwole, who is the Proprietor of the Datforte International School, Lagos, made the call during the school’s 2015 Graduation and Prize-Giving Day ceremony.
According to her, an early value re-orientation for pupils will go a long way in preparing them to shun immorality and corruption in the future.
With the nation’s educational system also enmeshed in corruption, the educationist noted that there was an urgent need to expose the younger ones to the right values of life.
Ijiwole said, “Our educational system must be re-packaged to emphasis moral uprightness. Right now, it appears there is much emphasis on acquisition of certificate. This is why people are so desperate to get it at all costs. I think we should emphasis practical work, high moral and integrity.”
She also urged mothers to endeavour to be monitoring their children, noting that as adolescents they were always experimenting with ideas.
She added, “Do not leave teenagers alone as they always want to try something new. Therefore, they need to be properly guided.”
The guest speaker, Mrs. Grace Sam, urged the graduating pupils to be good ambassadors of the school and not to bring dishonour to their families.

Bayelsa schools where pupils lack teachers, furniture

Apart from dearth of facilities and teachers, reptiles, such as snakes and scorpions, are regular companions in many schools in Bayelsa State,SIMON UTEBORreports
Some secondary schools in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, are still in deplorable state, leaving people wondering if the state of emergency declared in education in the state is sincere.
From the Community Secondary School, Swali; Azikoro Senior Secondary School, Ekeki, to the Demonstration Secondary School, Ekeki, among many others, it is a tale of dilapidation and decay. The schools are not just in a deplorable shape, their pupils study without desks, chairs, and laboratories. Besides, unkempt environment seems to be a common feature in the schools.
Our correspondent gathered that many of the schools have overcrowded classes, a feature that makes teaching a cumbersome experience for their teachers.
Indeed, many of the pupils, who spoke to our correspondent, lamented that even the few teachers they have do not show enough enthusiasm for their job. According to the pupils, many of their teachers not only engage in trading, they also leave their responsibilities to corps members posted the schools.
A pupil of the Community Secondary School, Swali, who gave his name as John (surname withheld), particularly frowned on their teachers’ attitude to work.
He said, “The level of commitment of some teachers is very low and they exhibit high level of nonchalance and indifference to their responsibilities. Some of them do not like teaching; they leave everything to corps members and do not even monitor their activities.
Dilapidated roof at the Community Secondary School, Swali.
“As for facilities, my school is lagging behind in terms of having the right environment that will enable us to achieve much academically.”
The school, he also said, lacked enough furniture such as chairs and tables, saying many pupils usually sit on bare floor to learn.
The pupil added, “We neither have laboratories nor library. Recently, the computer department was provided but we cannot make use of it because we lack power supply in the school. We also do not enjoy any recreational facilities such as playing fields and a volleyball court. We improvise by making use of available spaces for our sporting activities.
“Besides, my school is not habitable, as we have bushes surrounding us and inside these bushes are dangerous reptiles such as snakes and scorpions. There have been occasions when some pupils were bitten by those reptiles.”
A teacher in the school, who did not want his name mentioned, said there was need to build a bigger staff room for the teachers.
According to him, there are no provisions for some teachers in the staff room, resulting in many of them gadding about when they are supposed to be preparing for their lectures.
He also called on the authorities to provide more buildings, electricity, tables, chairs as well as equipped library and laboratories, noting that these facilities aid in teaching and learning.
A visit to Azikoro Senior Secondary School, Ekeki, revealed that though the school buildings look new, its pupils said their laboratories and library lack basic amenities and books.
However, the situation is different at the junior arm of the school, where the pupils face problems of inadequate classrooms and furniture.
A pupil, who identified herself simply as Judith, also noted that the commitment of their teachers was unimpressive.
She said, “I believe that the lack of commitment on the part of some teachers is because there are no drastic measures put in place by the authorities to bring discipline to bear on their activities.
“Yes, we don’t have enough teachers in the school, as many of our teachers usually complain of huge workload. I am urging the state government to employ more teachers so that the complaint will reduce. If the government engages more teachers, they will be more willing to impart knowledge to us.
“Also, we do not have any recreational facilities. The environment is good, but the school is not fenced and this brings about insecurity and indiscipline. Because of the development, people of questionable characters gain access to the school. The situation has led to the menace of criminal activities, such as armed robbery and cultism; and they pose great danger to corps members who reside in the school.”
To check such activities, she urged the government to ensure proper surveillance of the school and its environs.
At the Isaac Jasper Boro College of Education (Demonstration Secondary School), Ekeki, the pupils also decried the state of facilities in the school.
According to the pupils, the acute shortage of classrooms has resulted in running two sessions in the school.
A pupil, Josephine, urged the government to build more classrooms so that the idea of having two daily sessions in the school would end.
The young girl said she was always ashamed to tell people that she was attending afternoon school.
She added, “The classrooms are not adequate. Even the available ones are not conducive. We share classrooms with the primary section; that is why we at the senior section resume school around 12:30p.m and close by 4:30p.m.
“The school authorities resorted to two sessions because of inadequate classrooms and facilities. The authorities introduced the afternoon session for those of us in the senior secondary school and I must tell you that the development has really affected our learning.
“Also, I want the government to build more classrooms or structures that will be used for library and staff rooms. Currently, we only have one staff room in our senior secondary section and none in the junior secondary section.”
Efforts to get the reaction of the state Commissioner for Education, Mr. Dein Benedourmene, were futile, as his telephone rang out several times. He also did not respond to a text message sent to his mobile telephone as of 8pm press time on Thursday.

Our Universities Can Only Admit 800,000 Candidates- JAMB Boss

The Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor ‘Dibu Ojerinde on Wednesday asserted that despite the approval of new universities, the carrying capacity of all tertiary institutions in the country is less than 800, 000.
He said this was the only available space for the over 1.4 million candidates that sat for the 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Ojerinde, who spoke in Abuja yesterday, lamented that the good intention of the board to redistribute candidates from overloaded institutions to where admissions could be offered to them was opposed by the people.
“We said some institutions are overloaded and some do not have candidates. We now said let us redistribute the candidates so that they will not lose out finally or delayed.
“I’m talking about those who score 240 and above. Forget about 200 because they are so many yet our universities are not full. The Polytechnics, Colleges of Education don’t have candidates,” he stated.
Ojerinde noted that the protest at University of Lagos showed that people do not want the problem of access resolved.
He urged the Federal Government to remove the dichotomy between university degree and Polytechnic Higher National Diploma (HND), saying the discrimination was responsible for the crave for university degrees to the detriment of technical and skilled education.
The Registrar, however, confirmed that a report on the removal of the dichotomy between university degree and certificates acquired from other tertiary institutions had been submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday for consideration.
He revealed that the late President Yar’adua had approved the removal of the dichotomy and changing of HND to B.Tech, but it was not implemented before he died.

WAEC To Cancel Entire Results Of Candidates Involved In Exam Malpratice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Thursday asserted that any candidates and schools that engage in examination malpratice will be prosecuted.
This assertion was made by the Head, National Office of the council, Mr. Charles Eguridu.
Eguridu who gave the warning yesterday in Abuja at a Road Show on Examination Malpractices sensitisation said Nigeria, are having the highest number of candidates and irregularities among the five WAEC member countries.
Eguridu revealed that the board has introduced stricter measures and the use of advanced technology in its bid to curb the menace in the country.
He said: “When we discover candidates who are involved in examination malpractice, we have the power to withhold their results and carry out investigation. When we investigate and confirm that they were involved in any form of malpractice the results of that subject could be canceled, the entire results could be canceled and the centre can be de-recognised.”
Speaking on the technology, he explained that they have introduced a system that verifies candidates that registered for the exam which captured their biometric features, fingerprints and their facial features at the point of registration.
“These are uploaded into our database and on the day of the exam, these features are uploaded into a handheld devise at the centre and like the card reader does, we verify that it is the candidate that writes the exam,” he said.
Eguridu explained that WAEC is the only examination board that has introduced the use of the technology in the conduct of examinations in the whole of Africa. He pointed out that the sensitisation programme was organised to sensitise candidates about the consequences of examination malpractice.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr. MacJohn Nwaobiala, decried the increasing rate of examination malpractice in Nigeria saying, “in recent years, we have seen the multifarious manifestation of exam malpractices, from cheating in examination to contracting mercenaries to write exams, among others.”
He advised WAEC candidates to avoid situations that could implicate them in the examination hall, so that their future would not be jeopardised.

Muhammadu Buhari President laments alarming rate of unpaid salaries

This was made known in a statement made available to journalists by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity,Garba Shehu.
The President, according to Garba Shehu, raised the concern after receiving a briefing from the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education,MacJohn Nwaobiala.
The statement also said the President urged the three tiers of government to be more mindful of their responsibilities to pay teachers their salaries on time.
Buharisaid the worst harm state governments could cause their citizens was to deny them good education.
“It then means that their citizens will be denied a chance to compete with others at the centre. Socially, it is very, very bad, if not irresponsible,” the President said.
Nwaobiala was said to have briefed the President on the current activities of the Ministry of Education as well as its challenges, including inadequate funding and insecurity in some parts of the country.

Rita Awele's Death Earphones banned at UNIBEN ...10 days after tragic accident

Students of the University of Benin(UNIBEN) have been reportedly banned from using headphones outside their hostels.
The ban comes about 10 days after a 200 level Philosophy student,Halim Rita Awelewas killed in an accident that occurred on the multiple lane expressway directly in front of the school's Ugbowo campus gate.
In the announcement which was written on cardboard and reportedly posted on the notice board of the school's Tinubu Hall, students are banned from wearing headsets and earpieces outside of their rooms in order to keep them alert at all times.
"From now on, for your own safety, earpieces, head-set and earphones will be seized," the announcement read.
"Please, dont wear them outside your rooms."
Mixed reactions have trailed the announcement.
It will be recalled that Awele and another female student were knocked down at about 8.30 a.m. by a vehicle driven by a soldier

FG overrules JAMB on admission policy

The Federal Government has overruled the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on its new admission policy that recently sparked protests in parts of the country.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. MacJohn ‎Nwaobiala‎, disclosed this to State House correspondents on Tuesday after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari of his ministry’s activities and challenges at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
JAMB, had at its 2015 Combined Policy Meeting adopted a policy, whereby candidates of universities with surplus applicants for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations are reassigned to other universities with lower number of applicants than their capacities.
Protest started at the University of Lagos when the institution’s authorities announced that only candidates whose names were officially forwarded by JAMB are eligible to participate in the institution’s Post-UTME.
Nwaobiala told reporters that the decision was jointly taken at a stakeholders’ meeting that had parents and others in attendance.
He said because of the dust raised by the development, the Federal Government had commenced consultation with the aim of identifying where adjustments could be made.
He however said students that made the cut off marks had been directed to go and write post-UTME examinations in their schools of first choice since that was the bone of contention.
Nwaobiala said, “This JAMB thing has been there. As the policy making body, when these issues were raised, they raised in a stakeholders meeting. We normally have what we call the policy meeting. Everything about admission are discussed with parents and other stakeholders at the meeting.
“These are decisions that we collectively took. However, we have a listening ear. We have taken a lot of the issues raised into consideration and we are consulting to see the adjustments we can make here and there.
“The directive has been given. All the students that made the cut off marks have been told to go and write post-UTME examinations in their schools of first choice. After, they can go to their schools of second choice. That has been the bone of contention.”
On the threat by the West African Examinations Council to withhold the results of candidates in 19 states who wrote the May/June 2015 WASSCE following unpaid examination fees by the state governments, Nwaobiala appealed to states to fulfill their promises.
“The Head of WAEC has briefed me about it. It is so sad. States pledged to pay on behalf of these students and WAEC took them on based on the pledge.
“Now when it comes to the time to pay, it becomes a challenge.
“We will appeal to the states to see this as very important. A promise to a child is very important and it must be implemented,” he said.
Nwaobiala also said that at the meeting with Buhari, the President frowned on some state governments who had failed to pay teachers salaries for months.
He said the President observed that the situation was not good for the nation’s education sector.
“The President raised the issue of non-payment of teachers’ salaries in some states. He felt it is something that is very unfair. Do you prefer your people to be ignorant?
“Some teachers have not been paid for six months in some states, some have not been paid for one year. The President felt very concerned about that,” he added.
Nwaobiala also told reporters that Buhari also expressed concern over the poor rating of Nigerian universities among their peers around the world.
He however said his team explained to the President that some of the ratings were misinterpreted ‎as the rating of Nigerian universities had actually improved.
The Permanent Secretary identified one of the major challenges of the ministry to include the return of school children displaced by terrorist activities in the country, while getting more children into school.

Robbers attack Ebonyi varsity female hostel

Suspected armed robbers have attacked female students of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakalki in their hostel close to the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS), injuring three students and two security men.

Daily Sun gathered that the hoodlums forced their way into ‘Oduoye Hostel’, a female hostel, situated outside the campus at about 1am.

It was learnt that two security men at the gate of the school were injured by the robbers; a situation which made others to run into hiding for safety.

According to eyewitness, “We were already asleep when we began to hear strange movement and noise, only to discover that robbers have invaded our hostel. They were entering rooms one after the other attacking and dispossessing people of their belongings, including phones and laptops.”

Dean, Students Affairs of EBSU, Prof. Hillary Eze, confirmed the incident, but noted that the robbery operation was quelled through prompt intervention of security agents.

“There was a robbery incident at one of our hostels. The robbers forced themselves into some rooms, which means the burglarproofs were forcefully removed, doors broken and students were attacked. I think by our calculation, about 16 phones and two or three laptops were made away with by the robbers, while security men on duty were also manhandled.”

He described as untrue that robbers shot some security men, saying the robbers only attacked the students and the security men with cutlasses just as he denied that four students were abducted

Prof. Eze, who said the three female students and two security men were injured, added that they were immediately rushed to the state police clinic by the policemen deployed to the scene and had been treated and discharged immediately.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Chris Anyanwu, when contacted, said he could not confirm the robbery attack because he was away on official duty at Abuja.

He said Olalusi had become an ambassador not only to the ministry but to Nigeria and Russia.

“We have to search the Guinness Book of Records for anybody who has achieved 5.0 in a university. It is curious and strange that all those that evaluated his performance could not find reason to reduce a point from him.
“You should be the ambassador of the Federal Scholarship Board, Ministry of Education, Nigeria and the Russian Federation.
“I look forward to the day you will stand before the President to receive your honour. We have recommendations to that effect, ’’ Nwaobiala said.

He then urged Olalusi to continue to be a role model to young Nigerians and also called on him to explore opportunities in post graduate research.

Romanov said “Nigeria is blessed with abundant human potential which is officially acknowledged in Russia.

“It has been acknowledged in the Russian Ministry of Education that Nigerians have a lot of exceptional talents. Genetically, Nigerians grasp knowledge easily.
“Olalusi is a hardworking person. It is not easy to achieve such in Russia; it goes with talent and hard work.

“I urge you to engage your knowledge in the development of your father land.”
While showing his appreciation, Olalusi thanked God for his rare feat and also commended the Federal Government and the Scholarship Board for the opportunity given to young Nigerians to distinguish themselves.

Mr Olarewaju Olalusi, the father of Olalusi, said that his son’s achievement was as a result of hard work.

Olalusi said his son did not attend high class schools but normal public schools which spoke volumes of the standard of education in Nigeria.

He then urged parents to monitor their wards closely and make sure they were not distracted from their studies.

*They ‘re not our students—MAPOLY PRO
*4 suspected cultists arrested—POLICE
By Daud Olatunji
Some people believed to be cultists have allegedly killed four students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Vanguard gathered that one Muraina Ibrahim, popularly called Elebe of ND II, Computer Engineering Department, was killed last Wednesday along the popular sap route, while another ND II student of Mass Communication Department, simply identified as Demola, was last Saturday killed along MacJob Street at Fowobi area of the state capital.

The identities of the two other victims were yet to be ascertained at press time, but one of them was reportedly killed at Mango area of Oluwo, also on Saturday, while the other was killed at Iyana Oloke.

Findings have shown that Eiye and Buccaneer confraternities had been locked in a supremacy battle in the areas.
Contacted, Public Relations Officer of the institution, Sulaiman Adebiyi, denied that the dead students were MAPOLY’s.
He said he was aware of the death of two persons, whose identities had not been confirmed as MAPOLY students.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relation Officer in the state, Muyiwa Adejobi, said eight persons, suspected to be cultists, had been arrested in connection with the killings.

The PPRO explained that police had been facing security challenges at Onikolobo and some other areas of the state, adding that students should not abuse their status to get involved in cultism and attack police officers.

We’ll get them—POLICE
He said: “We have been facing security challenges in Onikolobo for some days because of some suspected cultists clashing in the area and we would not fold our arms and allow breakdown of law and order.

“We will continue what we have to do within the ambit of the law and any cult member found would be dealt with.
“If the students feel the police are not doing the right thing, they should follow the procedure and not staging protest.
“We have our targets, we know who we are looking for, we know the black spots and we will fish them out. Any student wrongly arrested would be released after being questioned.”
Meanwhile, palpable fear has gripped residents of Oluwo and Adigbe areas of Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The areas which are largely dominated by students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ojeere, Abeokuta, have turned a ghost town, following onslaught by police.

JAMB has become promoters of private varsities – ASUU

Chairman of ASUU,UI chapter,Prof.Segun Ajiboye, has alleged that investors in private universities are using the JAMB to promote their schools.
Ajiboye, who spoke in Ibadan on Tuesday on the re-allocation of candidates by JAMB to ‘needy’ institutions, said JAMB relevance had been undermined when universities in Nigeria began to decide the student they could admit through the post-UTME tests.

Ethno-religious Violence Nigeria needs Ministry of Peace — UNILORIN VC

The Vice Chancellor of theUniversity of Ilorin(UNILORIN), Prof.AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has called for the establishment of a Ministry of Peace and Reconciliation in Nigeria.
Ambali said this while speaking with reporters in Ilorin last week.
The Vice Chancellor said the ministry will be important in dousing incessant ethno-religious violence in the country.
"The Ministry of Peace is already in operation in countries like Costa-Rica and Denmark among others and you can see the results," Ambali said.
"What is wrong if we have the same thing here in Nigeria?"
"Having a full-fledged Ministry for Peace would not be a bad idea as it would be in line with the practice in countries like Denmark and Costa Rica among others that are known for peace in the world today."
He added that "universities can introduce it as a compulsory module for their students to institutionalize it here"
The Vice Chancellor urged the government to find a holistic solution to the security challenges in the northern part of the country.

"There Are No Jobs" It's not true that Nigerian graduates are unemployable — Prof Adikwu

Nigerian graduates are well trained and employable but there are no jobs for them, says Vice Chancellor of theUniversity of Abuja(UNIABUJA), ProfessorMichael Adikwu.
Speaking at a forum of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), held in Abuja, Adikwu said the problem is not the quality of graduates but the availability of jobs.
"They say well our graduates are not employable, that's not true; the issue is that there are no jobs," he said.
"So, the issue is not that they have not been taught; they have been taught."
According to him, graduates are supposed to acquire the practical aspects of their training on the job.
But the jobs are not there for them.
"Most things people do are learnt on the job and not in the classroom.
"No doctor will tell you that he or she became a surgeon in the classroom; you do the theory and then the practical in the field."
In a related development, the Vice Chancellor revealed that the institution is set to hold its first convocation in six years.
Over 12,000 graduates have been graduated within the period.

Post UTME Redistribution We're saving students from universities’ money-making machine — JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said its decision to redistribute candidates is to save them from universities’ money-making machine.
According to the head of JAMB, Lagos, Dr. Beatrice Okorie, the new admission policy saves students the trouble of paying for post-UTME exams at institutions that will not admit them.
“If we had not done that, many of these candidates would have fallen prey of the universities’ money-making machine, that is, the post-UTME without securing admission even with their high scores," Okorie said in aVanguardreport.
She said with the redistribution, candidates have a better chance at securing admissions without hassles.
“What we have done is to look at those who have not met with the cut-off points of UNILAG based on merit, catchment areas and the educationally less disadvantaged areas, but who have chances of securing admission in other federal and state universities and push them there to write post-UTME tests," she added.

She noted that candidates can from Monday 3rd of August begin to check where they have been posted to on its website.
Okorie also strongly condemned universities who use the post UTME as a money-making exercise.

SERAP, a non-governmental Organization, has sued the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) over the controversial cut-off marks set for admissions.

A non-governmental Organization has sued theJoint Admissions and Matriculation Boardand theUniversity of Lagos(UNILAG) over the controversial cut-off marks set for admissions.
TheSocio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project(SERAP) is seeking an order stopping JAMB, UNILAG and others from implementing the 250 score benchmark which is far above the 180 score set by JAMB as the nationwide university admission cut-off mark.
In a suit number FHC/L/CS/1139/2015, filed on Monday at the Federal High Court on behalf of SERAP and three applicants affected by the decision, Adeola Hammed Ayobami; Abass Ololade; and Abass Ajibola, by Adetokunbo Mumuni, it was argued that the decisions break Act establishing JAMB.
"The provisions of section 5(1) (c) (iii) of the JAMB Act are very clear and unambiguous," the suit read.
"The letter and spirit of the provisions is to ensure that the preferences of candidates in terms of the university they choose to attend are sacrosanct.
"Even a contrary or adverse decision by individual university cannot override decision made pursuant to the provisions of section (5)1) (c) (iii).”
SERAP wants the court to declare that the respondents' decision to raise the cut-off marks from the officially announced 180 to 250 is a direct violation of section 5(1)(c)(iii) of the JAMB Act cap 193 of the laws of the Federation which goes against the choices of the 2nd-4th applicants and all other candidates in the country.
The body also asked for “An order directing the respondents individually and/or collectively to reverse the decision to increase the cut-off point to 250 after stating publicly that it would be 180 and to fully and effectively implement the publicly announced 180 cut-off point.
"An order restraining the respondents individually and/or collectively from going ahead to implement the decision to increase the cut-off point to 250 instead of the publicly announced 180 cut-off point."
Joined in the suit, besides UNILAG and JAMB, are the permanent secretaries of the Federal Ministries of Justice and Education.
A date has not been set for hearing of the suit.
