The National Governing Board of the National Youth Service Corps has assured corps members of the board’s commitment towards addressing the infrastructural deficiency in most of its orientation camps.

Mr. Gordon Bozimo, the chairman of the board, gave this assurance while addressing the Batch ‘A’ corps members at the NYSC orientation camp in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.

He said the board was aware of the operational challenges facing some of the orientation camps in the country. He identified poor response to statutory obligations, insecurity and rejection of corps members by some organisations as challenges facing the board.

He said, “We cannot lose consciousness of the plethora of these debilitating operational hiccups. In fact, challenges such as infrastructural deficiency in some camps, poor response to statutory obligations by other tiers of government, rejection of corps members, insecurity, etc. stare us in the face.

“These, more often than not, have always stirred up apprehension and lobby for preferential posting by prospective corps members, and in some instances, their parents/guardians.”

He, however, charged stakeholders to ensure that the NYSC scheme does not die in the face of the challenges.

He said, “It therefore behoves all stakeholders to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that this noble scheme does not get drown with these turbulences. This is where the role of the NYSC National Governing Board becomes very crucial and essential.”

Meanwhile, the Director General, National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi, on Friday warned military and paramilitary personnel at the ongoing national orientation camps across the country, that under no circumstances should they assault any corps members at their various states.

Olawumi, who reacted to the alleged maltreatment of a Batch ‘A’ corps member, Mr. Olubumi Adeyera, which was said to have been carried out by some security operatives in the orientation camp, gave the charge when he visited the Magaji Dan-Yamusa orientation camp in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
