Nigeria Union of Teachers Body seeks death benefits of 380 teachers killed by insurgents

TheNigeria Union of Teachers(NUT) inBorno, on Monday urged the state government to speedily pay the death benefits of teachers killed byBoko Haram.

The Chairman of the union, MalamBulama Abiso, made the appeal in an interview with theNews Agency of Nigeria(NAN) inMaiduguri.
He said that no fewer than 380 teachers were killed while about 33, 000 others had been displaced from their habitat by insurgency.

The chairman said the payment of the benefits would assist families of the affected teachers, who were experiencing serious hardship.
Abiso also canvassed the establishment of insurance cover for teachers in private and public schools in the state in order to boost their morale for higher productivity.
The chairman said the insurance cover would further encourage teachers to give their best in the service of their fatherland.
Abiso also appealed to government to consider extending the insurance cover to students in primary and secondary schools in the state.
He further urged the government to give priority to the welfare of teachers, pay their promotion benefits and annual increment for 2012, 2013 and 2014.
The NUT chairman stressed the need for the government to pay the balance of the salaries of teachers under paid due to biometric data problem and those whose salaries were stopped since 2011.
Abiso said the government should pay arrears of pension and gratuity of retired teachers.
According to him, the union has initiated programmes aimed at empowering and uplifting the living standard of teachers in the state.
"The union was able to secure 27.5 per cent allowance for all professional teachers across the state and completed the renovation of the NUT Secretariat.

"We also purchased plots of land through the" NUT House for All Teachers initiative’’ whereby we assist our teachers to own houses.
"Our Live and End Well Programme is also second to none, as funds are donated to teachers to assist and empower them to become self reliant," he said
