Report exclusively obtained by Newspunchhas it that Mr. Babalola Olayinka of Batch “C” member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has been reported to have drowned in a river in Odu, a village in Nasarawa State where he is currently serving his father land.
The incident occurred on Saturday of August 1, 2015.
According to an eyewitness, the ugly incident happened when as usual the villagers trooped to the river. Many were fishing. Some came to swim; others to wash their clothes. In the throng were some Corps members, who chose to swim at the bank of the river. But, a few minutes into the game, one of them got drowned in the river.
Onlookers wondered how the late Babalola Olayinka got into the river. Initially, it was learnt that the Corps members were playing on the shore. “NEWSPUNCH” gathered that one of the Corp member pleaded with his colleague to move to the river on the basis of the fact that they were idle.
Our Source said; “The late Olayinka stood close to the river for a few seconds, after which he dived into the river to swim. His colleagues watched in excitement as he swam but in a moment, he stopped and started waving his hands. They thought he was still playing, until they didn’t see him again on the water surface.”
When his colleagues realized what was happening, they cried for help from the villagers, who were swimming in the river. After a few minutes of frantic search, the rescuers could not found the boy before he was later found at the bank of the river, dead and was immediately taken to the state hospital in Keffi..
The other Corps members declined to speak with our correspondents when contacted.
The Corps’ Liaison Officer (CLO) in the local government, Mr. Michael in his confirmation of Olayinka’s death described him as a “big loss to the NYSC in Nasarawa State.
