MAPOLY 2015/2016 Resumption Date, Payment Deadline Announced

Authorities of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta have announcedMonday, 14th December, 2015as resumption date for all Full-Time and Part-Time National Diploma and Higher National Diploma students of the Polytechnic for the First Semester 2015/2016 Academic Session.

TheMonday, 14th December, 2015resumption date will exclude only, students on the mandatory Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), who are expected back on campus onFriday, 5th February, 2016.

Meanwhile, the Institution’s Management has slated (Monday, 22nd February, 2016) as deadline for registration for the 1st Semester 2015/2016 Academic Session.

Please, how do I handle this situation, I am boxed in and I need your help. I have a male childhood friend, we have come a long way and we liked each other so much. We are neighbours and our parents and other siblings too are friends.
Sometime ago, while I was in 200 level in the university, I ran into a mess; I had to use my school fees to clear up the mess. When it was time for me to pay up my fees, I couldn’t tell my mother because apart from the fact that I couldn’t make up any story to take money from her; we lost my father.
Because of all these, I confided in my friend and he helped me to raise the money from his parents, I don’t know what excuse he gave them, because we attend the same school. He didn’t say he borrowed me, he said he gave me.
We are now in our final year, and for some time now, I have noticed a change in his attitude towards me; he is becoming unnecessarily close and he even asked that we date each other. I refused and explained to him that I have no such feelings for him and also the fact that he has dated two ladies that I know; one of them is my close friend.
I have always told him that I don’t have the time for dates and complications it could bring to my life now. Suddenly, he started asking for the money he gave me in 200levels. Knowing well that there is no way I can raise such money, I reminded him the fact that he gave me the money, he said he knew and that he wanted his money back or I should date and have s*x with him.

Why education is declining in Taraba, by researchers

TWENTY-FOUR years after its creation, public schools in Taraba State according to researchers, are still cup in hand begging for a face -lift from the relevant authority.
Several public schools at both primary and secondary levels, they observed “ are in dilapidated condition following government lukewarm attitudes towards the sector.”
The situation according to Raymond Enoch of the Center for Environmental Education and Development often made students and pupils from the state to come behind in national examinations and competitions.
The research sponsored by the Center for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) noticed that basic teaching aids like computers, rulers, diagrams, chalk board, current textbooks, registers, lessons plans, schemes of work and regular supply of lessons note books are no where to be found in the public schools.
The research, which was yesterday publicly presented to stakeholders in the state at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Teachers multipurpose hall in Jalingo, expressed dismay that 24 years after the state was carved out of the defunct Gongola State; several public schools are still operating from their “temporary sites.”
Even those that manage to relocate to their temporary sites, the researchers observed “ still lack basic school structures to support effective learning for both students and teachers.”
Like the government, parents and teachers organizations that ought to support community ownership and participation in the educational development of the state according to the research findings “ is also weak in terms of resources availability.”
Teachers’ training and refreshing courses which is a basic complementary service and incentive that enhance a quality educational performance of a teacher and a professional development in any society can have a huge gain, the researchers noticed that “ it is often not a priority to the state government.”
Adding that “ standard school system facilities like hostels for boarding students, staff quarters are left in the hands of schools managers of various schools, the scenarios, which they agreed further worsen their maintenance.”
Various stakeholders who made their minds known on the continual dwindling of education in the state also accused government of lack of political will.

Kwara Poly suspends 3 students over alleged possession of charms, others

The management of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, have suspended three students over possession of live cartridges and charms, offence contrary to the rules and regulation of the institution.
A statement signed by the Deputy Registrar (Information and Publication Division) of the institution, Alhaji Moshood Amuda, said the institution was determined to maintain a conducive learning environment.

“The polytechnic authority received a report that the students were in possession of live cartridges and charms and they were handed over to the police for further investigation. In line with the polytechnic’s practice, any student under investigation is to be placed on suspension, pending the outcome.

Consequently, I am directed to inform the affected students that the management has approved their suspension from the polytechnic, pending the outcome of the investigation by the police,” the statement said.

According to the statement, the students involved include Bolaji,Tunde J. Marketing Department with matric no: HND/12/MKT/PT/019, Abdullahi,Wasiu S. Marketing Department with matric no: HND/14/MKT/FT/207, and Atoyebi,F. Atanda, of Business Administration, with matric no: ND/14/BA/FT/132, all from Institute of Finance and Management Studies of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, said that only one suspect with three live cartridges was arrested.
He said the suspect has been charged to court.

Eighteen-year-old former student of Vaatia College Makurdi, Benue State, Master Samuel Nder was on Thursday, November 26, honoured as the best candidate in the May/June West African Senior Certificate Examination (WASSCE) taken by over 1.7million candidates nationwide.
At a colourful award ceremony held in Akure, Ondo state during the 53rd Annual Meeting of Nigera National Committee (NNC) of West African Examinations Council (WAEC), master Nder and two other candidates were rewarded for their performance in the May/June 2014 WASSCE.
Aside Nder who obtained 9A1s in the school exam to emerged the best candidate, 18-year-old, Miss Onyinye Oguejiofor formerly of Marist Comprehensive College, Nteje, Anambra state placed second with 9A1s while 17-year-old Master Oluwatobi Raji formerly of St Francis Catholic Secondary School Idimu, Lagos, recorded 9A1s in the WASSCE.
In the May/June 2014 WASSCE, with exam number 4081345036 Master Nder recorded A1 in Economic, Geography, English Language, Further Mathematics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics with total T-score of 659.4325 while Miss Ogueijiofor’s T-score was 648.5706 and Master Raji had T-score 640.2125.
Currently, the best candidate is studying Software Engineering at Saint Peterburg’s Electro-Technical University in Russia, Miss Onyinye is studying Medicine and Surgery at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Master Raji is studying Petroleum Engineering at the University of Lagos.
Speaking at the award ceremony, Governot of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, said as a demonstration of the state’s avowed commitment to nation building through the apparatus of educational development.
His words: ‘’we have always welcomed with passion any educational programme that the state is privileged to host. Our passion is always borne out of the convictions that, no nation can ever rise above the quality of her education. This is because education is the vital organ and the very pivot around which all national life resolves.’’
Mimiko who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Abdul-Azeez Oluboyo, commended WAEC for its unrelenting efforts in conducting standard examinations and producing credible results over the years.
The governor congratulated the three best schools in the state that were honoured by the council for their candidates performance in the May/June 2014 WASSCE and appreciated WAEC for it investment in the future of the children.
The chairman of WAEC NNC, Mrs. Anne Okonkwo said the awards are aimed at encouraging the youth to strive for excellence in their academic pursuits noting ‘’it is my hope that some of the youth who are here today to witness this ceremony, will be challenged by these Awards to work harder in order to win similar laurels in future.’’
She also disclosed that NNC would present books to the three best schools in the May/June 2014 WASSCE from Ondo State stressing that it was in accordance with the decision of the Nigeria Sub-Board of the WAEC Endowment Fund Board of Trustees at its 4th meeting held in November, 2012.
Mrs Okonkwo use the opportunity laud the federal and other state governments for their support to the council over the years even as she thanked Governor Mimko for his investment in education and the performance of schools in the state in WASSCE.
The Head of National Office (HNO), Mr. Charles Eguridu, disclosed that the NNC ensures that the policies of the council in Nigeria are decided in the best public interest, and appropriate decisions are taken at all times, for the smooth conduct of the WAEC’s operations.
Eguridu appreciated the support and understanding which the state government has continued to give to the council in its efforts to improve service delivery to numerous stakeholders in the state and Nigeria as a whole.
At the event, 40 WAEC staff were given long service award for their 20 years meritoriously service in various capacities while Governor Mimiko described the awardees as worthy ambassadors of the council and wished them more years of productive service to the council and the nation at large

I’m determined to fight corruption in tertiary institutions, says Buhari

PRESIDENT Muhamadu Buhari has assured that the problems being encountered in the tertiary education sub-sector as regards the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) will soon be addressed.

He gave the assurance during the 27th convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State.
The President said his attention was drawn to the resultant discomfort the implementation of TSA has caused in the academic and administrative activities in tertiary institutions in the country.
Speaking through the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof Julius Okogie, he explained that the TSA policy was introduced in order to enthrone financial discipline and curb corruption in the country.
The TSA was “introduced for a good cause and the issues involved in its implementation as it affects tertiary institutions are being addressed.”
The President reiterated the ‘zero-tolerance for corruption’ by his administration, saying he was determined to lead by example.
“We shall obey our laws and shall be transparent, accountable, just, fair and demonstrate integrity in all our undertakings.
“The leadership of this university should therefore, continue to be prudent, transparent and accountable in the management of both human and materials resources.
“Government is determined to fight corruption at all levels including corruption in academics in our tertiary institutions.
“We cannot speak of effective and efficient funding of the education sector if our universities are mired in crises, confusion, fraud and lack of institutional vision.
“I must at this point call on universities to be at the vanguard of the fight against corruption and eroded ethics, which constitute a major component of our societal ills.
“We must all endeavour as citizens and members of the academic community to enthrone the spirit of hardwork, honesty and inspirational leadership which are the hallmark of any citadel of learning.”
The President said the need for the diversification of the economy is ripe now considering the dwindling fortune of oil in the international market and charged universities to join hands with Federal Government in the onerous task.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Adebiyi Daramola in his address said 4,435 students graduated with various degrees from the university with 28 of them having first class.

UNIUYO New VC might not be inaugurated due to sexual assault case

The outgoing Vice Chancellor of theUniversity of Uyo,Comfort Ekpo, has asked the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, to suspend the inauguration of Enefiok Essien as the new vice chancellor of the university over his indictment by the Court of Appeal for sexual assault.
According to report by PremiumTimes, 55-year-old Mr. Essien, professor of commercial law and current dean, Faculty of Law, University of Uyo, was billed to succeed Mrs Ekpo as Vice Chancellor on the 1st December.
Mrs. Ekpo, however, has expressed her worry in a letter to the minister which was dated November 17, 2015. In it, she informed Mr. Adamu about the “uneasy calm, tension and anxiety pervading the entire university community” because of Mr. Enefiok Essien’s nomination as the next vice chancellor of the institution.
In her letter to the minister, Mrs. Ekpo said, "The situation is consequent upon the widely publicized alleged fractured integrity of the Vice Chancellor-designate, Prof. Enefiok E. Essien."
“I most respectfully submit that the inauguration of the new vice chancellor slated for December 1, 2015 temporarily be suspended to provide a window for any reasonable grievances to be looked into by your ministry and council as may be deemed appropriate.”
She added that relevant provisions in the law could be invoked in the interim for smooth academic and administrative activities in the university.
Mr. Essien was indicted in 2005 by the Court of Appeal, Calabar, over a sexual assault case which took place in 1995.
Essien, then a senior lecturer, was accused by a student, Linda Onyebuchi Essell, of sexual assalt.
Essell, who was expelled from the UNIUYO in 1997 for Examination Malpractice, alleged that Essien framed her because she refused to have an intimate relationship with him.
In her affidavit before the Federal High Court, Calabar, Essel said, “Sometimes in April, 1995 around 1pm, Essien, after our lectures on Contract of which he was the lecturer, summoned me to his office. He told me that I had the last opportunity to redeem my career which was billed for a doom by expulsion if only I could accede to his simple love overtures which will take nothing from me."
It has been reported that by the time the petition came to reconsider Essien as prospective VC, it was too late to make the required changed.

Universities have been urged to stop admitting students coming in to study non-accredited courses.

On Thursday, theHouse of Representativeswarned universities against admitting students who intend to study courses that have not been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

According to Leadership reports, the House also resolved that any Vice-Chancellor of a university found to be admitting students for non-approved courses should be sanctioned by the NUC.

A motion which was tagged,“Call on Nigerian Universities to Stop the practice of admitting Students into Courses not Approved by the National Universities Commission(NUC)” and sponsored by Hon. Samuel Onuigbo was adopted yesterday.

Onuigbo mentioned the practice by Universities of admitting students when they know the courses have not been accredited in their institution. This has made it possible for hundreds of prospective graduates to be stuck without degrees, leading to depression and bleak future.

He revealed that as many as 104 courses out of all courses being offered in about 140 federal, state and private universities in the country, are not accredited by the NUC.

“This practice is going to worsen the already explosive youth unemployment in the country by adding a large pool of unemployable and frustrated class of young people which is a sure recipe for youth restiveness and anomie,” the House noted.

Consequently, theHouse Committee on Tertiary Education and Serviceswas mandated to carry on inventory of all universities to ascertain approved or accredited, and non-accredited courses and establish why they are not accredited with a view to find a solution.
