FG Declares October 1st A Public Holiday

Thursday, October 1st has been declared a public Holiday by the Federal Government to mark the Nigeria's 55th Independence celebration.
This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Abubakar Magaji, in a statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Press, Yusuf Isiaka.
He congratulated Nigerians and express appreciation over their support for the present administration and urged them to pray for peace and unity across the country during this celebration.

Candidates shall possess the Senior Secondary School Certificate conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC), National Examination Council (NECO) or equivalent with at least credit passes in 5 subjects including Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at not more than two sittings. Candidates from other African countries or wishing to transfer from other Universities are also encouraged to apply.
Direct Entry
In addition to the above, a candidate shall possess at least two ‘A’ Level passes or equivalent in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, or possess a first degree at the level of at least Second Class (Lower) Division of Second Class in any of the biological sciences. Fed Poly Ado – Ekiti Re-scheduled 2015/2016 Post-UTME Screening Test

The Federal Polytechnic Ado – Ekiti has rescheduled its 2015 Post-UTME Screening Test recently slated to hold from Monday, 28th to Wednesday, 30th September, 2015, to a new date.
The latest postponement was due chiefly to challenges experienced by many prospective candidates in possessing their e-transact PIN from Banks as a result of recent government banking policy on Treasury Single Account and also the Public Holidays for the commemoration of the Islamic Festival of Eid-El-Kabir on Thursday 24th and 25th September, 2015.
Also, the rescheduling by one week to now commence from Monday, 5th to Friday, 9th October, 2015 became imperative by the need to enable a hitch-free preparation and successful conduct of the screening test with the hope that the shifting would afford many prospective candidates normalize their registration.
A statement from the Institution urged Parents, Guardians and all admission seeking qualified Candidates, who chose the Federal Polytechnic Ado – Ekiti in their 2015 JAMB applications to note that the Computer Based Test will now hold from Monday, 5th to Friday, 9th October, 2015 at the Polytechnic Digital Library.

Step 2:Applicant goes to any of the designated banks – Eco Bank, Access, GT Bank, Wema, UBA, Zenith or First Bank and pays the application fee of N15,000 (Fifteen thousand Naira) only and N2,500 e-processing, ODL induction and Evaluation fee. Candidate will be given a receipt which contains a CON – Confirmation Order Number.

Kogi Education Wada pays N201m scholarships to 60,000 students

Students in Kogi state are in for a good time as the GovernorIdris Wada-led government commences the disbursement of N200.6 million scholarships.
Wada's Senior Special Assistant on Youth and Student Affairs, ComradeMatifo Precious, revealed this in Lokoja on Wednesday.
He said N100.6 million of the total sum is for undergraduate students studying at various universities in the country while the remaining N100 million will be disbursed to Kogi students studying at theNigerian Law School(NLS).
Precious explained that 25,000 students have been paid a total of N30 million in the first tranche while the other students will be paid subsequently.
The scholarship will be warmly received, given that the governor has beenseverally criticised in the pastfor not taking education in the state seriously.

With the gubernatorial elections fast approaching and the emergence of a former Governor of the state, PrinceAbubakar Audu, as the candidate of theAll Progressives Congress(APC), Wada will hope that the gesture will win the students to his side.

Wada, a member of thePeoples Democratic Party(PDP) and an accomplished pilot, became Governor of Kogi State in 2011 and is seeking a second term in office.

Nigeria's polytechnic sector is being discriminated against by the Federal Government,Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) and theTertiary Education Trust Fund(TETFund), says the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).
Speaking with journalist in Abuja, ASUP National President, ComradeChibuzo Asomugha, said graduates and staff of polytechnics unfairly treated, relegated to the background and undermined by government policies and bodies.
"[Polytechnic] graduates and teachers are pathetically and consistently judged, not by the strength and character of their knowledge, learning and skills, but by the addresses of their institutions,"Asomugha said.
He accused TETFund of going against the distribution ratio prescribed by law the disbursement of fund.
“The distribution of the fund between universities, polytechnics and colleges of education is statutory in the ratio of 2:1:1 or 25 per cent; 12.5 per cent; and 12.5 per cent.

"The reality on ground, however, is the gross short-changing of the polytechnic sector in the disbursement of the funds, especially in areas of special interventions, high impact intervention and staff development and training.

"The situation has left most of the polytechnics underdeveloped and dysfunctional.”
The union boss also accused JAMB of giving inferior cut-off mark for admission into polytechnics as against the provision for admission into polytechnics.
“The admission policy of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, which profiles polytechnics as undesirable destinations for pursuit of tertiary education is absurd and unfortunate.”
According to him, the cut-off marks difference is not only discriminatory, but also makes polytechnics seem inferior.
“Candidates who sit for matriculation examinations into tertiary institutions deserve equal treatment."
“Candidates seeking to be admitted into the polytechnics should be placed on the same benchmark as their counterparts.
"This is to breach public perception which places our sector as inferior or incapable of competing with the best in terms of service delivery.”


Asomugha also spoke about the Treasury Single Account (TSA) of the Federal government which was introduced to block financial leakages and prevent mismanagement of government's revenue.
He argued that the TSA, while being "a welcome development that will block financial leakages, stem profligacy and track government’s revenue profile", will "tie down the processes of provision of daily needs of the institutions and therefore hamper efficient service delivery" if applied to the education sector.

Help Fatima Abdullahi: 300 level UDUS student needs N3m for surgery after breaking spinal cord in auto crash

A 300 level student of Microbiology at theUsmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto(UDUS)has been left hospitalized after damaging her spinal cord in an auto crash near Talata-Mafara along Gusau-Sokoto road, in Zamfara state.

Fatima Abdullahi, who has been on admission at a hospital in Abuja, now needs N3 million for a surgery after doctors at a Zamfara hospital diagnosed her with severe Spinal Cord Injury (SCI).

Student Pulselearnt that Fatima was left without care for two months after the diagnosis, because her parents cannot afford healthcare.
Speaking withDaily Trust, the leader of the UDUS chapter of theMuslim Students Society of Nigeria(MSSN), MallamRabiu Barau, said Fatima's situation is very critical.
“Her case was so disturbing that her parents were prevented from taking her away from the government hospital in Zamfara.
“Other parents were allowed to take their children away but Fatima’s parents could not take her away due to the severity of her condition.”
Barau said doctors have confirmed that Fatima could be treated abroad if the funds are available but the funds are not forthcoming.
"Her parents are not rich enough to fly her out.”
One of the students who partook in the fundraising,Mubarak Abdullahi,said less than 10% of the needed sum was realized.
 “We learnt that the amount needed for her surgery was N3 million which was quite difficult for her family to raise, in addition to other hospital bills they had to settle,”Abdullahi said.
“We raised a little above two hundred thousand naira which was immediately paid into her account.”
In early August, her colleagues held a fundraising rally; ‪#‎Match4Fatimah and a social media camping with the ‪#‎SAVEFATIMA hashtag to raise funds for her surgery.
The family is still looking for support from members of the public.

Admission Requirements
The requirements for the various programmes are as follows:
Master's (MA. M.Eng and MSc) Degrees
A candidate seeking admission into the Master’s Degree programme shall be a graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy or any other recognized university. Such candidate must possess a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower Division) in the relevant field of study.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree
Candidates for PhD Degree must possess a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower Division) at Bachelor Degree and a Master's Degree in the proposed field of study from a recognized university. In addition, the candidate must have scored an average of not less than 60% or 3.50 at the Masters level.
Duration of Programme
Each student admitted for Master's or PhD Degree must pursue a FULL-TIME course of study and research in the Academy. Depending on the degree in view, the following conditions are also applicable:
A student for the Master's degree shall pursue the programme for 2 years (4 Semesters)
Candidates for PhD degree shall pursue the programme for 3 years (6 Semesters). At the expiration of the period of study for any given programme, a student who has not completed his/her programme shall be withdrawn from the Academy. However, in exceptional circumstances, application for extension to complete the programme may be entertained. Extension shall not exceed a period of one year (2 Semesters) in case of Master's degree and 2 years (4 semesters) in case of Ph.D.
A student of Postgraduate Diploma shall pursue a full-time programme for 2 years (4 semesters) and maximum period of 3 years (6 semesters)

Lagos Education Yoruba language to become compulsory subject in public, private schools

Lagos lawmakers have asked GovernorAkinwunmi Ambodeto make the teaching of Yoruba language compulsory in all schools within the state.

TheLagos State House of Assemblyon Thursday posed a request before Ambode seeking a resumption of compulsory teaching of Yoruba language, requiring all public and private primary and secondary schools to build the Language into their curricula.
The house had adopted a resolution on motion moved by a member representing Alimosho Constituency 1,Bisi Yusuf, to revive teaching of the language in schools in the state.

The lawmakers also agreed to organise competitions among pupils and students in their various constituencies to promote the teaching and fluent speaking of the language.

The House also proposed a Stakeholders' parley where Ministry of Education officials, educationists, parents, teachers, among others would brainstorm on the way forward.
