Please Help! We Are Not Save - NYSC Members Cry Out

Six corps members in the Osiele area of Ogun State say they are now living in fear since January 13, 2016, when a gang of robbers stormed their apartments and carted away their valuables.
They said the incident was reported at the Odeda Police Station, but the police had yet to visit the scene.
The robbers, who were armed with cutlasses, burgled two flats, where the victims reside around 4am penultimate Wednesday, carting away foodstuffs, laptops, a television set and mobile phones, among others.A lady said, “They stole my HP laptop, an iPhone and a Samsung tablet. They told us to lie down...”
A corps member, who is serving at the Abeokuta South LGA, Paul Wisdom, said he wrote a letter to the state Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps, on the incident, but his letter had also got no reply.
According to Punch, Wisdom urged the police and the NYSC to investigate the incident and beef up security in the area to prevent a recurrence.
He said, “Four of us live in a flat. They came in through the window around 4am, wielding cutlasses and charms. They went into our kitchen and packed all our foodstuffs. They also made away with our laptops, mobile phones, television and money. We do not have any security here. We reported at the Odeda Police Station, but the police have not come here since then. I also wrote a letter to the NYSC state coordinator, through Abeokuta South Local Government Inspector last Monday. They have not got back to me since. We are in a strange land; we don’t have relatives here. We have been living in fear. The burglar-proof that was destroyed by robbers has not been fixed by the landlord and we don’t have any other place to go.
“The police should investigate and know what actually happened. In an area like this, most of the hoodlums would be known to the police authorities. If they can trace one of the stolen items to a person, they will be able to arrest the suspects.”
Another affected corper, Olamide Olowoniyi, said she and her friend, Ekawu Godsfavour, heard a loud bang in their neigbours’ apartment and wanted to check what was happening when the robbers overpowered them.
Olamide said, “They stole my gold jewellery, my Samsung X6 and my laptop. They also took the cash in my wallet. There has never been a vigilance group guarding this area; the security is never tight.”

The requirements for various undergraduate degree programmes are as detailed in the NDA website / applications portal, as well as in the JAMB Brochure and website. All other information concerning degree courses, eligibility and examination centres are as contained in the NDA website / applications portal.
1. To be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy, a candidate must have the following:
*.Minimum of 5 Credit passes at SSCE (WAEC or NECO) or GCE O/L obtained in not more than 2 sittings relevant to the Faculty of their choices.
*. Credit in English Language and Mathematics.
*.At least one supporting relevant credit to the compulsory credits in faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Faculty of Science. However, only one supporting relevant credit is required in the Faculty of Engineering.
*.Be at least 17 years old and not more than 21 years old at the time of entry into the Academy. Note that Nigerian Airforce candidates must be between 17 and 18years old at entry.
*.Must not be less than 1.68 metres tall for male and 1.50 metres for female.
*.Must be medically and physically fit and must be of good moral character.
*.Must be single male or female without legal obligation to support any child or other individuals.
*.Present a Certificate of Origin obtained from a Local Government Area and a Certificate of State indigene ship from the Office of the State Governor is desirable.

*.Awaiting results are not qualified. Results not submitted with the application for will not be accepted.
*.Only examination results of 5 years from date will be accepted.
*.Currently, admission into the academy is for both male and female Nigerians only.
NDA 68thRegular Course Method of Application.
Candidates should logon to the application portal www.ndaapplications.net. select “Purchase Access Code” and fill in their details to pay for their application via REMITA after first obtaining their ORDER ID and REMITA Retrieval Reference (RRR) Code in the sum of N3,000.00 only. Please note that only payment against RRR Codes generated via the application portal would be accepted.
Interested candidates are advised to go online and complete the application on the websites indicated above. Please download and read carefully, the Instructions provided on the website. Applicants applying for admission into NDA MUST also apply to the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB), but may not necessarily select NDA as their choice of university. Such applicants are expected to sit for the JAMB Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).
SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS
Applications should be submitted online. On completion of the online application, candidates are to download an Acknowledgement Form. Upon release of the JAMB results, candidates should return to the applications portal and download their Examination Admission Card. Only candidates who make the JAMB national cut-off mark will be allowed to participate in the NDA Entrance Examination.

EXAMINATION CONDITIONS
Only candidates who meet the JAMB national cutoff mark will be eligible to sit for the NDA Entrance Examination at their Examination Centre of choice.
The examination will be conducted as an Entrance Examination (similar to Post-UTME examination in conventional universities), and is scheduled to hold on Saturday 23 April 2016. Therefore, all eligible candidates are to bring along their Acknowledgement Form, Examination Admission Card, JAMB result slip and TWO (2) postcard sized (3.5 x 5 inches) photographs to the Examination Centre on the examination date. The photographs should show only from the chest upwards and should contain the candidate’s Name, Exam number, State, Exam Centre, Course of study and Signature at the back. Only successful candidates at the NDA Entrance Examination will subsequently be invited for the Armed Forces Selection Board following which the list of admitted candidates will be published.
NATURE AND DURATION OF TRAINING
Admitted candidates into NDA for the Regular Course will undergo military and academic training as Officer Cadets for a duration of 5 years. On successful completion of training, graduands will earn a honours degree in a core discipline (BSc, BEng, BA). They will equally earn a commission into the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
ADMINISTRATION
Regular Course cadets will train in NDA. All aspects of the cadets’ administration and logistics will be borne by the Federal Government.

Etisalat Present Cheques to 10 UNILAG Students

gEtisalat Nigeria, one of Nigeria’s leading Telecommunication network presented cheques to 10 (ten) University of Lagos students under its Etisalat Merit Awards Scheme for 2015 onThursday, January 21, 2016at the Senate Chamber, 2ndFloor, Senate House, UNILAG.
The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos Professor Rahamon BelloFAEng, who was represented by the Dean, Student Affairs Division, Professor Gabriel Babawale in his opening remarks thanked Etisalat Nigeria for maintaining their Corporate Social Responsibility in the sustainability of the scheme which is in its fourth year. He then congratulated the beneficiaries who were found worthy of the honors in their various departments and faculties.
Professor Babawale also used the medium to appeal to Etisalat to do more in the assistance of indigent students . In order to achieve this, the Student Affairs Division had begun a project tagged “Adopt a Student”. The sum of N150,000 is required to sponsor a student per session.
He further said that theN100,000 given to each of the beneficiaries is meant for educational support and must be used judiciously.
While responding, Manager, Corporate & Social Responsibility, Etisalat Nigeria Mrs. Oyetola Oduyemi, explained that the merit award programme was done across 20 universities through the selection of 10 students in each institution based on Merit & Best Performance in 200 & 300 levels.
In conclusion, she admonished the awardees to keep working harder especially those who benefitted from the 2015 scheme while in 200 level because the 2016 edition will take place soon and that the competition is getting tougher by the day.

Buhari 'Our Universities are failing'

President of Nigeria,Mohammadu Buhari, has expressed his worry for the educational system in the country through Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission,Prof. Julius Okojie.

Okojie, who was in Bauchi at the 19th to 22nd convocation ceremony ofAbubakar Tafawa BalewaUniversity, stated that Nigerian Universities do not make it to the top hundred universities in the world even though the country has lots of talents that excel elsewhere.

He said, “it is worrisome that no Nigerian university is quoted among the top 100 universities in the world.

“We rank below a thousand, if we do not aspire to be among the world class universities, we cannot boast of robust system capable of making the country among the top economies of the world.
“We have abundance of talents who excel elsewhere but appear incapacitated at home. This is unacceptable.
“Whatever makes our abundant talents fail at home and excel abroad must be identified and neutralised for our benefit and that of our future generation,’’ he said.
He added that one of the mainchallengesthe Nigerian institutions are facing is that they keep sabotaging themselves through incessant strike actions.

“The repercussions of strike usually retard the smooth running of academic activities with heavy negative consequences," he said.
He concluded by urging State Government to encourage and support Universities in their states so that they are better able to access and take advantage of much needed talent.

Insubordination! OAU students union leaders banned for years

The three students are reportedly being
punished for verbally assaulting and
threatening a professor, Y. K. Yusuf, in
the institution.

The Students Union leaders at the Obafemi
Awolowo University » have been suspended
for up to 6 semesters for threatening a professor,
PremiumTimes report.
The SUG leaders were reportedly given between
four and six semesters suspensions.
Those suspended are the president, Omotayo
Akande; Secretary General, Oketooto
Oluwaseun and the Public Relations Officer,
Ojedokun Emmanuel.
The three students are reportedly being
punished for verbally assaulting and threatening
a professor of the institution, Prof. Y. K. Yusuf.
According to reports, Emmanuel, who was
supposed to graduate in two months, and some
of his colleagues interrupted an ongoing lecture
where Yusuf was teaching, with the aim of
making an announcement.

Yusuf refused to grant them permission to do
this, causing the students to feel insulted.
Thereafter, they accosted the lecturer and told
him to apologise to the students, or else, they
would parade him around the campus.
When the professor insisted he was not going to
apologise, the SUG president sent an SMS to the
Vice Chancellor of the school, stating that he
cannot guarantee the safety of the professor if he
does not tender an apology for walking the
members of the union out of his class.
A panel set up by the school’s management to
investigate the matter recommended that the
students be suspended for three years.
Mr. Emmanuel confirmed that they had
received the suspension letters, and called on
the management to review its sanction.

“We have received the letters and plead with
notable Nigerians to save Oketooto Oluwaseun,
Omotayo Akande and myself,” Mr. Emmanuel
said, while denying threatening the professor. He
claimed that he was being framed and that the
management is just looking for an excuse to get
rid of him.
Oluwaseun and Emmanuel were suspended for
four semesters respectively, while Akande was
suspended for six semesters.

Lagos court jails Malaysia-based student 24 years for internet scam

A Nigerian student schooling in Malaysia, Hope
Olusegun Aroke, has been jailed 24 years for a
N25 million internet scam.
Justice Lateefa Okunnu of the Lagos State High
Court, sitting in Ikeja convicted and sentenced
the 25-year old undergraduate of Kuala
Lumpur Metropolitan University, Malaysia,
based on the information provide to information
from the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC).
Aroke was arraigned before Justice Okunnu on
a two-count charge bordering on obtaining
money by false pretence; cheque cloning, wire
transfer and forgery. Spokesman to the EFCC,
Wilson Uwujaren said the court found him
guilty of the two charges and was sentenced to
twelve years imprisonment on each of the two
counts.The sentence are to run concurrently.
“Troubles came for Aroke when an anonymous
petitioner wrote to the EFCC alleging that the
Kogi state-born undergraduate was involved in
sundry fraudulent activities on the internet.
The EFCC swung into action and investigated
the internet dealings of Aroke. Investigations
showed that he was involved in several
romance scam that fetched him a total sum of
40,000 ringgit ( Malaysian currency). Aroke
admitted sending the money to Nigeria
through one Angela, who later helped him
deposit its naira equivalent, N25 million in a
new generation bank”, Uwujaren said, adding
that two exotic cars were found in his
possession at the time of arrest. They are both
worth N23 million .
Aside his conviction, Aroke is said to still have
two other matters yet undecided before Justice

Authority of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) advised all prospective corps members who have any error on their details, to contact their respective schools for corrections.

There are so many factors that may not allow you to see your name on-line:-

1. If your school is yet to upload, you can not see your name

2. If you search your name with matriculation number or surname different with the one uploaded by your school.

3. if you don’t have a valid jamb number.

4. if your jamb number is regularized and you fail to validate it from jamb database.

5. if the name you are using in school is different from the name you used when registering jamb.

If you are affected with any of the above, please contact your school for rectification.

FUDutsin-ma 1st Class Graduates Get Automatic Employment

The Vice Chancellor Federal University, Dutsin-ma, Katsina State, Prof. James Ayatse, Saturday, said First Class graduates of the university will be offered automatic employment.
The Federal University, Dutsin-ma, Katsina State, on Saturday gave 11 students, who graduated with First Class degrees, automatic employment. The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. James Ayatse, made the disclosure in Dutsin-ma at the maiden convocation of the institution.
Ayatse said that the students graduated from 11 departments in the Arts, Management/Social Sciences and Education faculties. ‘’I am glad to inform you that the university’s Governing Council has approved that appointment letters of the First Class graduands be issued to them during this ceremony,’’ he said. According to him, 49 other students graduated in the Second Class Upper Division , 46 were in Second Class Lower Division while the remaining four were in Third Class Division.
He added that the institution provided scholarship to students who distinguished themselves in their various fields. According to him, 696 students had so far benefited from the scholarship scheme since the inception of the university in 2010. Ayatse explained that the institution had already mobilised its first set of students for the 2015 Batch ‘B’ National Youth Service Corps.
He, however, cited funding as one of the major challenges hampering the smooth running of the university. The vice chancellor added that in spite of the challenges, the university would be ranked among the best universities in the country and the world in general in the near future. He advised the students to shun all form of vices and concentrate on their studies for them to succeed. (NAN)

NOUN Varsity accuses NYSC of discrimination The VC lamented the discrimination of its graduates by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Nigerian Law School.

Authorities at the National Open University (NOUN) has accused the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Nigerian Law School of discrimination against their graduating students, Leadership reports.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Vincent Ado Tenebe at the 5th Annual Convocation ceremony, said that the graduates of the school are not given equal opportunities with fellow graduates from other institutions to participate in the NYSC.

He also added that the law students are barred from attending the Nigerian law school. 

Tenebe said an internet search shows that there are 59 open universities in countries throughout the world and there is no evidence that graduates of their open universities are treated differently from the graduates of their traditional regular universities.

The VC therefore called on the appropriate agencies responsible for NYSC and legal education in the country, to reconsider their positions, especially against the background of the “latest results of University Rankings” by Webometrics which placed NOUN as number 23 out of the “100 Best Universities in Nigeria for 2015.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed concern over low ranking of the country’s universities. The president expressed the concern on Saturday in Bauchi at the 19th to 22nd convocation ceremony of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. Represented by Prof. Julius Okojie, Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, he said that ``it is worrisome that no Nigerian university is quoted among the top 100 universities in the world.

``We rank below a thousand, if we do not aspire to be among the world class universities, we cannot boast of robust system capable of making the country among the top economies of the world.

``We have abundance of talents who excel elsewhere but appear incapacitated at home. This is unacceptable.

``Whatever makes our abundant talents fail at home and excel abroad must be identified and neutralised for our benefit and that of our future generation,’’ Buhari said.

He blamed incessant strikes by teachers as ``major bottlenecks to progress of the country's university system’’.

``The repercussions of strike usually retard the smooth running of academic activities with heavy negative consequences’’. The president called on the state governments to support and encourage universities situated in their states because they were responsible for harnessing local talents and promotion of local innovations. He observed that the Treasury Single Account policy was meant to enhance accountability, transparency and revenue.

``The seemingly challenges especially in tertiary institutions should be seen as a teething problem that will gradually vanish as the policy takes roots.

``MDAs should, therefore, exhibit patience and understanding, bearing in mind that Nigerians shall surely reap from the fruits of the policy,’’ he said.

Oba Rufus Aladesanmi, Chancellor of the institution, urged the graduating students to explore ways of self employment. Aladesanmi further urged them to contribute to the technological and economic development of the country.

He observed that in spite of large number of students that applies for admission, few were being admitted due to few facilities.

The chancellor called on stakeholders to urgently find both short and long term solutions to the problem. Prof. Saminu Ibrahim, Vice-Chancellor of the institution, said that the institution was graduating 8,127 students for its 19th and 22nd convocation.

He explained that the figure included 845 diplomas, 5,577 first degrees, 1,620 post-graduate diplomas and Masters and 85 students as Doctors of Philosophy (Ph.D).

Ibrahim further explained that out of the 5,577 first degree graduates, 32 obtained First Class, 1,203 Second Class (Upper Division) 2,702 Second Class (Lower Division), 1,481 Third Class and136 Pass.

On achievements made by the institution, Ibrahim said that 40 academic staff members had obtained PhD. degrees worldwide while many others were pursuing their Masters degrees.

He said that the institution was constructing six news hostels and renovating the existing ones as parts of students’ welfare package.

Female Corper Escapes Being Used For Money Rituals

Last Wednesday, January 20, at Eteo, in Eleme area of Rivers State, a said said he saw people gathered round a car. On getting close he saw a Corper on handcuffs, and some men being questioned.
Here's the story of what happened as told by the Corper:
She boarded a taxi to her PPA, on reaching her destination she gave the driver One thousand naira (N1000) only for the driver to accuse her of paying with a counterfeit naira note. She denied it, but one of the passenger then claimed to be a Police Officer concurred with the driver.
The man brought out handcuffs and cuffed the Corper, claiming they are taking her to police station.
Luckily for her, a passerby saw what was happening and raised an alarm, which prompted the youth of the area to come out.
After so much argument, the youths insisted on searching the driver, only to find more counterfeit notes on him. The other passengers tried to escape including the fake police officer, but were caught by the youth.
The female corper was rescued from them and the man were handed over to police.
They have confessed and are making useful statements to the police about this new trick of using people for rituals.
We all should be careful, especially corpers who are new to the area they are posted and are vulnerable.

NYSC Foundation moves to recover over N14.8m debts

ABUJA–The National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) Foundation has said it had become imperative for it to recover over N14.8 million debts, arising from soft loans granted ex-corps members over the years, for it to fulfill its purpose.
The foundation established in 2008 was a voluntary organisation that could be joined by any ex-corps members with N500 registration fees to have access to soft loan, if they have marketable business plan.
The Executive Secretary of the foundation, Mr. Adebanjo Akinnigbagbe, said that the only way to keep the loan facility alive was to recover the debts owed by beneficiaries which according to him, was taken from a revolving loan.
Akinnigbagbe, who disclosed this at the 2016 Desk Officers Workshop held in Abuja, charged desk officers to assist them in monitoring the beneficiaries to respect the agreement they had with the foundation.
His words; “In view of a great sore the foundation has, I want to remind the old desk officers and inform the new ones about a decision taken at our last meeting in 2013. The NYSC Director of Corps Mobilisation, Mr Anthony Ani has called for partnership from organisations to aid NYSC in achieving its mandates.
“More than any other time this is when NYSC needs help because the population of corps members coming in is increasing by the day and government cannot do everything especially now that the resources of government is dwindling.
“This is the time we need serious partnership not just with the foundation but with any organisation that can help NYSC,” he said.

You were born, bred and educated in the United Kingdom. But two years ago, immediately after you graduated, you elected to visit Nigeria where your Grandparents reside – both of whom are in their Mid Eighties.
You signed up for the National Youth Service having freshly graduated with a sterling First Degree in Law and a Post Grad immediately afterwards. You were headhunted by an Energy Firm before you completed your NYSC and a presto you gallantly announced to your Nervous Parents – Dad a Diplomat with the United Nations based in Italy and Mum a Pharmacist based in the United Kingdom, your country of Birth – that you were going to permanently relocate and make Nigeria your permanent abode. Your Grandparents were ecstatic, you being their most favourite Grand Daughter.
You were a straight A student right from when you passed your GCSEs through to when you excelled in your A’levels…so much so that Prestigious Queen Mary’s London University snapped you to study Law. You missed a First by whisker’s. Nevertheless you made your mark all the way through. Then it all came crashing down.
What was supposed to be a routine journey to Church on a relatively sombre, otherwise uneventful Sunday morning on the Lekki/Ajah Expressway around the Lekki Phase 1 approach turned into a living and eternal nightmare for those of us left struggling to pick up the pieces. Our lives changed forever, never to be the same again.
A victim of the reckless and probably high on drinks/drugs ‘Danfo’ Driver. The most galling of the entire episode was the fact that the driver of that Danfo survived unscathed, RAN away from the scene leaving a trail of Death and Destruction in his wake. Four people died at the scene. Your New Toyota Corolla was a crumpled wreck. But the Fighter that you were, despite massive injuries, you fought and fought and fought.
Your Dad, via his status at the United Nations, got you into Lagoon Hospital where you were for a few days. When it became clear that the extent of your injuries was too severe for the local facilities here in Nigeria, An Air Ambulance was scrambled from the United Kingdom to get you much needed Specialist Care in the United Kingdom. Your tireless mum who flew in from the United Kingdom, barely 48 hours after the accident, accompanied you in the Air Ambulance. Still we Prayed and Prayed and Hoped for the Best.
Sadly We lost you a day after you arrived in the United Kingdom. The Surgeons tried desperately. You fought desperately to hang on. But in the end, it was not to be. The pain is palpably raw as it is numbling. We asked again and again, Why you? Why You? If only you had stayed on in the country of your Birth, If only…so many questions but very few answers. Your Parents, Your Grandparents, Oh! Your Grandma, with whom you celebrated her 80th Birthday over here in Nigeria a few years ago has refused to eat since she was informed of your passing nearly a week ago…All she repeatedly does is wail, wail to space “God Take Me instead, Give My Granddaughter back to Nigeria. Nigeria Needs Her, Her Parents Need her. God Take me. God Take Me.”.
These are indeed extremely perilous times. And so it was that having just spent barely a few weeks in Nigeria after a prolonged Winter holiday and Christmas in the United Kingdom with family and friends, I now find myself in the rather unenviable position of scrambling for the next flight out back to the United Kingdom just so that I can attend your Funeral this weekend. Someone retorted to me “Oh, you know, ‘our tradition’ forbids older relatives attending and being present at funerals where the deceased is much younger than us…” I snapped back, which tradition? And what has tradition ever done for us? What did Tradition ever give to HER?
I am here like a Zombie, mechanically and circuitously packing a few items for my flight out in the morning. National Teachers InstituteNTI shares 24 vehicles to state coordinators

National Teachers Institute(NTI) has distributed about 24 vehicles to State Coordinators across the country to enable them carryout their field work efficiently.
The Director General of the institute,Dr Aminu Ladan Sharehu, who distributed the cars, said one vehicle will be given to a zonal and state coordinator.
Sharehu said the vehicles will enable the field officers to carry out their functions efficiently.
The DG also commissioned centres such as; Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education Multipurpose hall, E-learning Centre, Centre, Centre for Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE), integrated Science Laboratory and Fire Service unit of the institution located at Rigachikun, Kaduna-Zaria express way.
The Vice Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof Vincent Ado Tenebe, commended the effort of the NTI DG.
Tenebe said the commissioning of the projects would lead to the betterment of teachers across the country.

In Kano: Secondary school student stabs colleague to death

A senior secondary school (SS ll) student of Al-Amin Academy Kano, Usman Salisu has been killed allegedly by his colleague Sadiq Ado, an expelled student of First Grade Comprehensive School.
Salisu, 18, was stabbed by Sadiq with a sharp object suspected to be knife at the front of First Grade Comprehensive School on Monday, Daily Trust learnt.
The deceased died at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano where he was taken for medical attention, his relative, Mallam Nasiru Zango, said.
“Usman was sent for errand and directed to stop over at his former school First Grade Comprehensive School where his brother is schooling.

"He was to waits for our driver to take them home after the school hours,"Zango explained.
Daily Trust was told that Sadiq also arrived at the school looking for one Mustapha Yellow whom he (Sadiq) had misunderstanding with. An argument was said to have ensued between Usman and Sadiq after which the latter pulled out a knife and stabbed Usman.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relation Officer of Kano command, DSP Magaji Musa Majia, said the suspect Sadiq Ado had been arrested by the police in connection with the murder.

UniJos ASUU Suspends Strike after 91 Days

University of Joshas called off its Strike which has lasted for 3 months today. The University of Jos chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUUhad embarked on the strike action since October 23rd following their demand, among other things, the disbursement of their earned academic allowance as well as the payment of postgraduate supervision allowance has seen students of the Institution at home for 91 days.
Newsabout the strike being called off was reported via @UniJosBreaking, a Twitter account used by the School's administration in getting info to the public.
The strike got called off after the Minister for Youths and Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung interfered between the warring factions. Mr Dalung until his appointment as a Minister was a member of ASUU Unijos Chapter.

80 students escape death in hostel fire in Anambra

No fewer than 80 students have been displaced from their boarding houses at the Don Bosco Secondary School and Youth Centre, Obolo Obosi, near Onitsha following a fire incident. The fire destroyed the two-winged structure, beddings and the entire roof of the building worth millions of naira.
It was gathered that the officials of the fire service who were alerted would have contained the inferno, but could not access the premises on time due to bad road. Speaking after conducting news men round the debris of the inferno, the Rector of the school, Rev. Fr. Charles Uzoeto, confirmed that the property of the students could have been saved, but the fire service could not access the premises, revealing that the fire broke out while the students and teachers were in school. “After meandering through the markets with all the difficulties, before they came here, we were already counting our losses.

NYSC Bars Posting Engineers To Teach In Secondary Schools

The National Youth Service Corps has concluded plans to halt the posting of engineers to secondary schools and other places of primary assignment different from Engineering Institutions. The agreement was reached by the Directorate of NYSC and Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Speaking at the Pre-Inauguration stakeholders’ workshop of the 30th President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers held yesterday in Abuja, the President of COREN, Engineer Kashim A. Ali, disclosed that the Council has secured an agreement with the Director General of NYSC to what he referred to as prevention of wrong training of Engineers. He also said that the Director of Mobilization of NYSC has also been notified of the new development and they have fashioned modalities for its success.

Ali said “Posting engineers during their service year to places they will not benefit is depriving them the opportunity of training and by implication the country is losing.

The DG of NYSC agreed with us and directed the Director of Mobilization to ensure that engineers are posted to only engineering institutions.

“To help him, the Director of Mobilization requested that we should assist to give them the names of engineering organizations in all the states of the federation so that when they are doing their posting they will send them to such places.”

In BornoGovernment to establish state University

The Borno State government has awarded a contract of 3.4billion naira for the construction of a state university.
The State Governor, Kashim Shettima, said that this has become necessary to help get the state out of the educational backwardness it has suffered over the years.
Shettima blamed the Boko Haram menace the state is suffering on the absence of education among the youths.
An implementation committee with members extracted from the University of Maiduguri and other institutions of higher learning in the state are already nurturing the project.
The committee is chaired by Professor Abubakar Mustapha who has also expressed worry about the inability of indigenes to favourably compete with admission requirements with applicants from other parts of the country.
Equipping the state university and obtaining accreditation from the National University Commission is part of the Terms of Reference of the committee.

The management made this decision to not only ensure the institution progresses, but to also serve as a deterrent to others.

Three students at theGovernment CollegeUghelli have been indefinitely suspended for partaking in homosexual activities.

According toVanguard, this was disclosed yesterday during the reunion and Annual General Meeting of the Old Boys Association, GCOBA.

The school principal, Mr. Vincent Useh, the management made this decision to not only ensure the institution progresses, but to also serve as a deterrent to others.

President General of the association, Professor Omatete Oristsegbemi, advised parents to be diligent in the upbringing of their wards, adding that the association would not condone any act of indiscipline from any student.

UNILAGStudents barred from entering hostel

The students were asked to evacuate their rooms because the school will be hosting some ECOWAS students.

SomeUniversity of Lagos, UNILAG, students have been barred from entering their hostel, according to report by TheNation.

Residents of theHenry CarrHall at the (UNILAG) were on Monday, January 18, were denied access into their hostel.
Electricity was cut off around 11am and water supply stopped at 4pm. The hall has three blocks of rooms and houses Masters and Doctorate degree students.
It was reported that the students were served a quit notice on January 12 which was effective on January 14. The students, however, had not returned from holidays when the notice was served.

But when a new notice was served, the date had changed.
The notice reads: “Following the memorandum received from the Dean of Students Affairs (a photo copy is hereby attached) today concerning the notice of evacuation from the Hall of Residence, we, members of the Hall Management Committee (HMC), wish to formally appeal to you and all the students to please obey the directive of the Dean. You will assist us to be instrumental to its obedience because it has to be obeyed immediately. The directive has been given since Monday, January 11, 2016. Administratively, we expect everyone to have evacuated the Hall latest on Monday, January 18, 2016.”
This information infuriated the students whose rent was supposed to elapse in March.
The students were asked to evacuate their rooms because the school will be hosting some ECOWAS students. They eventually had a meeting with some university officials, including hall executives and hostel officers.
A student, who did not want to be named, said the executives were still trying to come to an agreement that would favour everyone.

“The students were told to vacate the hostel but the session is not over. Some of us are not through with our exams and some of us come from long distances. We want the school authority to allow us stay till January ending. I believe they were in a tight corner yesterday because of the ECOWAS students’ arrival. We would be having a congress tonight (Tuesday) to discuss our options”, he said.
A female student, who is yet to begin her exams, wondered how she is going to cope.

“Where do I start looking for accommodation now when my exams are close by and how do I combine searching for accommodation and reading for exams? I don’t really know what to do,” she said.

Nigerians Will Henceforth Pay N50 To The Federal Govt, Each Time They Receive Payments In Their Accounts

Federal government through the CBN, yesterday imposed stamp duty of N50 on bank customers for money received into their accounts.
Consequently, bank customers will henceforth pay N50 stamp duty for money received into their accounts via electronic transfer, cash and cheques.
This order was contained in a circular to all Deposit Money Banks and Other Financial institutions titled, Collection and Remittance of statutory charges on receipts of Nigeria Postal Service under the Stamp Duties Act”.
The CBN stated, “As part of efforts to boost its revenue base, the federal government of Nigeria is exploring revenue opportunities in the non-oil sectors especially taxes and rates. .
It is in recognition of this fact that banks and other financial institutions are enjoined to support government’s revenue drive through compliance with the provisions of the Stamp Duties Act, LFN 2004 as reinforced by the court judgement in Suit No FHC/L/CS/1710/2013.
In this regard, the CBN pursuant to the provisions of its enabling laws, hereby issues this circular to all DMBs other financial institutions:
“With immediate effect, all DMBs and other financial institutions shall commence the charging of N50 per eligible transaction in accordance with the provisions of the Stamp Duties Act and Federal Government Financial Regulations 2009, that is, all receipts given by any bank or other financial institution in acknowledgment of services rendered in respect of electronic transfer and teller deposits from N1, 000 and above; “For all avoidance of doubt the following receipts are however exempted from imposition of stamp duties: payments of deposits or transfer by self to self whether inter or intra bank; and any form of withdrawals/transfers from saving accounts; It should be noted that these charges are only payable by receiving accounts;

UNIJOS ASUU Strike To End Soon As The Minister Of Youth And Sports Intervenes

The almost three months strike embarked upon by the ASUU chapter of the University of Jos may soon be called off as the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Mr. Solomon Dalung, has intervened in the lingering strike.
Dalung who was a law lecturer in the University before his appointment as a minister decided to intervene since the management of the institution and lecturers were unable to resolve the issues.
According to the UNIJOS-ASUU Chairman, Dr. Chris Piwuna, many of the issues the lecturers have with the authorities of the institution have been pending since 2005.
He further stated that a congress of the union would hold on Wednesday to decide whether or not to call off the strike immediately.
There are high hopes that the intervention of the minister will see an end to the lingering strike.

FUTMINNA Withdraws 460 Students For Poor Academic Performance

Over 460 students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, (FUTMINNA) have been asked by management of the institution to withdraw due to poor performances in the just concluded academic session.
Letters of withdrawal were served last Friday on the affected students who were said to be 100 level students that were not able to meet with the academic requirement stipulated by the NUC to move to the next level of their study which is Grade Point of 1.5.
Investigation shows that virtually all the faculties in the institution were affected by the withdrawal.

University of Lagos, UNILAG admitted 8,602 students out of the 58,293 UTME and Direct Entry Candidates that applied for the 2015/2016 academic session admission.

Professor Rahamon A. Bello FAEng has
administered the Matriculation Oath on the 8,602
newly admitted students of University, for
2015/2016 academic session.
A total of 53,935 UTME applicants and 4, 358
Direct Entry applicants began the selection
process. Out of that figure, 31, 955 scored 200
and above in UTME while 26, 497 sat for the post-
UTME of our University. Those offered provisional
admission were 6,256 in the UTME category and
2,459 in the direct entry category, making a total
8, 602.
Today, after a thorough screening exercise, there
are 6, 644 students, representing about 11.5% of
the total number of applicants, who have fully
scaled the registration procedure, whom from this
day would become bonafide students of the
University of Lagos.
The Matriculation Ceremony which was held
on Friday, January 15, 2016 in the Multi-
purpose Hall, UNILAG, Akoka, was witnessed by
Principal Officers of the University, Deputy Provost
of College of Medicine, Professor Abayomi
Okanlawon, and Deans of Faculties.
In his address at the event, the Vice-Chancellor
congratulated and charged the new students to
embrace the zeal to acquire academic excellence
for which the University of Lagos is reputed. He
also urged them to shun all vices and immoral

“Stop Discriminating NOUN Graduates” – Chancellor Cries Out

The Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, His Royal Highness, Amb Lawrence Okolio, has urge the federal government and the general public to stop discrimination against graduates from the Institution.
He also wants graduating students of the university to be allowed to participate in the National Youth Service Corps and those who read law to attend the Nigerian Law School.
According to him, graduates from the Nigerian online universities are not given equal treatment like their counterparts from other schools.
Some of the graduating students and their alumni confirmed that their degrees are often discriminated against in the labour market, but expressed hope that the trend will change in the nearest future.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Vincent Tenebe, in his remarks asked for more funding for the university from the federal government.
The National Open University is a recent innovation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) that allows students to study and work at the same time.

NYSC Online Registration Requirements And Mobilization Timetable For Batch “A“ 2016 Is Out

This is to inform all prospective corps members, i.e. Nigerians who have graduated from Universities and Mono/Polytechnics both at home and abroad that the NYSC On-line registration portal will be opened from 8th February to 12th March, 2016 to enable them register for the 2016 Batch ‘A’ mobilization.
In order to ensure a seamless registration, prospective corps members are to note the following for strict compliance:
1. The Website address is any of the following:
-www.nysc.gov.ng
-www.nysc.org.ng
-www.portal.nysc.gov.ng
2. Prospective Corps members should ensure that they have valid and functional e-mail addresses that they can access and Nigerian (GSM) telephone numbers with which to register.
3. Locally trained prospective Corps members are expected to use correct JAMB and Matriculation numbers to register
4. For locally-trained graduates, only those whose names appear in the Senate/Academic Board Approved Result lists submitted by their Institutions will have access to the register on the NYSC portal.
5. Foreign-trained prospective corps members should ensure that their Institutions are accredited. Where in doubt, it is their responsibility to approach Federal Ministry of Education for verification. The letter of verification must be uploaded during registration.
6. Foreign-trained graduates from Ghana and Benin Republic must obtain letters of verification and upload same for mobilisation to be effective.
7. Those who graduated from Institutions outside Nigeria, (Foreign-trained graduates), are to visit the NYSC portal, register and upload the following documents:
-West African School Certificate(WASC) (with not less than 5 Credits at 2 sittings) or its equivalent,
-General Certificate of Education (GCE O’ Level) (with not less than 5 Credits at 2 sittings) or its equivalent,
-NECO (with not less than 5 Credits at 2 sittings) or its equivalent
-High School Diploma or its equivalent.
-First Degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) Certificate (Second Degree or Ph.D not necessary). Letter of attestation will not be accepted, Please.
-Transcript of the first Degree or HND.
-International travelling Passport showing data page and date of departure for the course of study. (Please note that you must present the originals of the above during verification at the Orientation camp).
-Letters of verification for graduates of Institutions in Ghana, Benin Republic and any other Institution whose accreditation is in doubt.
8. It is the responsibility of the prospective corps members who studied in non-English speaking countries to get their Certificates and Transcripts translated into English language before uploading.
9. All graduates of Medicine, Pharmacy and Medical Laboratory Science are expected to have their Certificates of Registration with Nigerian Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (NMDCN), Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) and Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria respectively and upload during registration. Payment receipts are not acceptable.
10. Unlike in the past, Foreign-trained graduates should not visit NYSC Headquarters, Abuja for verification of their documents. This exercise will now be done at the Orientation Camps. They should simply print their call-up letters on-line and report at the Orientation camps in their States of deployment, but should come to the camp with the original documents uploaded during registration for verification.
11. Anybody who presents any fake document will be demobilized and decamped. Also, anybody not available in camp for the verification will equally be demobilized.
12. Prospective corps members should ensure that Passport photographs used meet the following specifications:
Ensure your face (eyes, nose, ears, mouth and jaw) is fully shown without bending
Ensure the picture is centralized and fills the frame
Ensure the Photo background is white or off-white with no shadow.
13. On no account should prospective corps members register by PROXY. They should also remember the finger used for their biometric capturing as this will be used for data verification at the orientation camp. Those who cannot be verified with their biometric at the orientation camp will not be registered.
14. Only prospective corps members who want their call-up numbers sent to them through SMS and wish to PRINT their call-up letters on-line are expected to pay the sum of Three Thousand Naira (N3,000.00).
15. Prospective Corps members who do not want to pay the N3,000.00 have the option of going to their schools to collect their call-up numbers and call-up letters.
16. All prospective corps members who paid for the online registration during the 2014 Batch ‘C’, 2015 Batch ‘A’ and ‘B’ Mobilisation but were not mobilized need not pay again.
17. Married female prospective corps members (whether locally or foreign-trained) should upload copies of their marriage Certificates, evidence of Change of name, evidence to show their husbands’ place of domicile and copy of husbands’ driving licence or data page of International passport during registration.
18. Female prospective corps members are advised not to apply Tulips (Lalea de colorat) on their fingers as this will void their Biometric capturing during the verification in camp.
19. The orientation camp is highly regimented and not ideal for pregnant and nursing mothers. Those in these categories would be registered and released immediately they arrive at the camp. However, with effect from Batch ‘C’ 2016, pregnant and nursing mothers will not be registered at the Orientation Camp. They would wait until they are fit and ready to go through all the programmes of the NYSC without distractions.
20. Prospective corps members who have problems related to mobilization should go to the nearest NYSC Secretariats, see the Deployment and Relocation officer and lodge their complaints.

21. All Part-time graduates are also expected to register online, even without JAMB numbers. Such graduates have the option of paying online and printing their Exclusion Letters or as usual, travelling to their Institutions for the Letters.
22. PLEASE NOTE THAT ONCE THE PORTAL IS CLOSED ON SATURDAY, 12TH MARCH 2016, THERE WILL BE NO FURTHER REGISTRATION.

NYSC sits on N23.5 million donation to critically injured ex-corps members- Vanguard News

hMore than one year after completing their national service, indications have emerged that nine National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, injured in motor accidents during the 2014 service year, may have not received the N23.5 million donated in their aid.

The money was donated to the youths under the NYSC Hope Alive initiative, a public/private sector partnership (PPP) aimed at bringing succour to corps members who suffer permanent disability during service.
To one of the beneficiaries who served during the 2014 year whose injuries stopped him from attending the award ceremony, Ibeto Group donated N5 million.
The then Governor Godswill Akpabio gave all the nine corps members N5 million while Heritage Bank gave the beneficiaries N1.5 million each,  bringing all the donations to N23.5 million.
The money was to enable them pick up the pieces of their lives after the tragedies that left them disabled. They also benefitted from automatic employment initiated by the Federal Government.
The corps members are Susan Nwouku from Benue State; Alade Bukola Oluwaseun from Ekiti; Hunsu Oluwafemi from Lagos; Igheghe Ijeoma from Delta; Akinrujomi Folarin from Ondo; Nwagbara Eberechi from Rivers; Kayode Funke, Samuel Ngada and Samuel Abigail from Oyo.
Two of them each had one of their arms amputated in the accidents they were involved in during the service year.
The beleaguered former corps members refused to talk toSunday Abuja Bulletinwhen approached on the Hope Alive  initiative.
And NYSC authorities could not be reached at press time on the matter.
Director-General of  the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Johnson Bamidele Olawunmi, had, while announcing the initiative, said it was designed “to give hope to future corps members that the scheme and indeed this great nation will not abandon those who may suffer similar fate in the course of national service”.
On the nine  2014 beneficiaries, the NYSC boss said, at the 2012, 2013  and 2014 President’s NYSC Honours Award ceremony: “No Nigerian youth will be abandoned.
“Such hope will be through the provision of training and start-off grant to them in their chosen skills. It is also to give  hope to future corps members, that the scheme and indeed this great nation will not abandon those who may suffer similar fate in the course.
“Although, government is paying N1 million as worn-off fees for such members, we don’t just want to leave it there. We want to continue to monitor such corps members.
This indeed is a worthy initiative. In the past, youth corps members who sustain injuries leading to permanent disabilities during their service were subjected to post-service emotional and psychological trauma as they were neglected by the same society they were mobilised to serve.
“The cash awards by the private sector partners and the offer of employment by the federal government would indeed bring succour not only to the now physically-challenged ex-corps members but also to their families who placed their hopes on them for support after their service year. “Disabling injuries can have a lot of effect on the ambition of those who are unfortunate to suffer them but the society must have enough humanitarian and humane spirit to ameliorate those effects by seeing that special provision is made for the purpose of empowering such people to still pursue their dreams and achieve their goals in life. The future of our country’s well-being is the youths and we all owe it a sacred duty to empower them to pursue their dreams.”

Managing Director of  Heritage Bank, Mr. Ifie Sekibo, who also spoke at the ceremony, said his bank’s gesture to the affected corps members was informed by its belief that the future well-being of the country would be better guaranteed if all well-meaning Nigerians and other stakeholders teamed up with the Federal Government to empower youths to create wealth”.

University Ranking"University of Ibadan is the best"- NUC

TheNigerian Universities Commission(NUC) has named University of Ibadan as the best among second generationUniversitiesin the country in 2015.

University of JosandUniversity of Ilorinalso made the list, TheNation reports.

A statement signed by Abdullahi Abdullahi, Principal Officer Assistant Registrar, Information and Publication of the university, noted that: “The second generation Universities are the 12 universities established between 1970 and 1985 to meet the increasing need for university education in Nigeria especially in the area of Science and Technology.”

Abduallhi said: “University of Jos was however ranked 7th in the overall ranking of all Federal, State and Private Universities in Nigeria.”

Covenant University was also named as the best private University in Nigeria.

UNIJOS Vice Chancellor, described the ranking as clear recognition of theenormous workbeing done in the university.

“It was encouraging that the university was being appreciated for the impact it is creating towards human capital development in the country, noting that the ranking was consistent with the University’s global rating.

“If not for some challenges, the University could have achieved greater success. I enjoin all stakeholders to rally round towards ensuring that the University achieves its full potential,” he said
