CBN plans soft loans for one million graduates

The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, on Thursday announced that a low-interest loan scheme for one million young graduates would commence next year.
The governor said the special loan scheme, which would be managed by the central bank in collaboration with commercial banks, was part of the strategy of the Federal Government to boost the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises sub-sector and curtail unemployment among the youth.
Emefiele made the disclosure in Lagos during the opening ceremony of the seventh Annual Bankers’ Committee Retreat.
The CBN governor said, “We need to get more and more people to be employed, and we will need the support of the banks to begin to see how we lower our risk acceptance criteria to give support to our young graduates.
“In the course of the next few weeks, we will be unfolding a plan of support of the CBN to create employment for at least one million young graduates in Nigeria in 2016. That will entail support from Nigerian banks and our development institutions to see how we will channel these concessionary loans to companies that are MSMEs.”
Emefiele said the plunge in commodity prices, especially crude oil, had led to sharp fall in the nation’s revenue, adding that Nigeria and other oil exporting countries were facing hard times, a situation that necessitated the need to diversify the economy away from oil.
According to the CBN boss, the MSMEs represent the engine room of growth of any economy and there is a need for Nigeria to focus on the sector in order to weather the trying times.
He said, “The drop in commodity prices is a major thing that has affected the country. What that means is that your revenue has dropped and we are facing very serious pressure on our external reserves and exchange rate. What that does is that we all need to think about how we should come together and see what we can do as a people to shield ourselves from what is happening. So, we need to do whatever we can to protect the economy.
“We are entering a phase where we believe that the SMEs must be the only priority for growth in our economy. I must say that the Nigerian banking sector has not played an active part in supporting the SMEs, but this is not without reasons. We had issues in the past where people took loans and didn’t pay.
“The SMEs are seen as drivers of growth in any economy. Nigeria has 37 MSMEs. The CBN has a N220bn MSME facility. We have used various approaches to stimulate lending to the SMEs through that fund and I must confess that we are not doing enough on that because less than half of that fund has been disbursed today.”
Emefiele urged the bank MDs and heads of financial institutions at the meeting not to shy away from lending to the real sector, adding that the proposed loan scheme for young graduates must work.
He said, “Let’s give the young graduates a chance. The SME programme is going to be separate from the N220bn MSME fund, and I am saying if you (the banks) refuse to support, your money that we would have released through the Cash Reserve Ratio, we will take that money and lend it through any channel that will give these young graduates jobs.
“We all need to think together and agree because there is no need to release the money to you and all you do with the money is buy treasury bills. It can’t continue. We need to think about the best ways to diversify this economy away from oil.”
Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, who was also present at the opening of the retreat, disclosed that the Federal Government would be borrowing to stimulate the economy.
She said Nigeria was facing a very challenging economic situation and there was a need to focus on the SME sector to boost growth.
According to her, the government will be doing all that needs to be done on the fiscal side of the economy to ensure that the money that will be borrowed is not spent on recurrent expenditure but on capital projects.

Pupils attack teachers with guns in Osun

Some teachers at Anglican High School and Adenle Middle School in Osogbo narrowly escaped being shot when some cultists invaded the school compound and chased out teachers.
The school which houses student population of about 7,000 is made up of Anglican High School 1-5 and some students of Adenle Middle School.
Our correspondent gathered on Thursday that the crisis was caused by some students who knew they could not pass the qualifying examination the state wanted to conduct to select those whose WAEC fee would be paid by the state government.
But some said the crisis started last Friday when a student identified as Toib and his colleagues stormed the school premises with dane guns to attack a member of Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme ( O’ YES cadet) who they had issues with.
A teacher told our correspondent that Toib and his gang chased a female Home Economics teacher out of the class when the trouble started.
The invasion of the school forced other students and workers to flee.
The Friday invasion was said to have forced the school authorities to invite policemen but the cultists mobilised more members and attacked the police even on Monday.
The development, it was gathered led to the instruction given to the teachers by the Nigeria Union of Teachers that all teachers should stay away from school because of the threat to their lives.
It was further learnt that the Osun State Ministry of Education had also closed down the school to prevent any death.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Lawrence Oyeniran, when contacted declined to make any comment on the crisis.
He said, ” This is a subject I don’t want to talk about. Maybe you can see the deputy governor and ask her your questions.”
However, the NUT chairman, Mr. Amudah Wakeel, when contacted said the crisis was so serious, adding that some of the teachers were lucky to have escaped being shot dead by the rampaging cultists.
Wakeel said, ” Some cultists among the students invaded the school. They wanted to kill some of the teachers. They took dane guns to the school but our members were fortunate.
“A member of ‘OYES’ cadet was injured with an axe by the students but he survived. The police were deployed to prevent the situation from leading to loss of lives. We have instructed our members to stay away from the school because of the threat to their lives.
“The union has the power to instruct members not to go to school if their lives were threatened and this is exactly what happened. The teachers stopped going to school and the government has closed down the school.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, when contacted told our corespondent that seven suspects were arrested in connection with the crisis.
It will be recalled that a teacher at the Oosgbo High School was injured with an axe following the bloody clash between students of the school and students of Government Technical College, Osogbo, in 2014.

Healthy Eating FG to provide milk for millions of students

Worried about the state of malnutrition of Nigerian students, TheFederal Governmenthas made plans to provide a litre of milk a day to over 30,000,000 children in secondary and primary schools under the school feedingprogramme.
According toUNESCOinvestigations, 24 per cent of Nigerian children under the age of five are under weight while 37 per cent are malnourished.
Vanguardreports that the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, disclosed that the Federal Government is determined to tackle the case of malnutrition in the country. The case of unhealthy eating, he said, will result in low intelligent quotient of children.

n a meeting in with West African Milk Company (WAMCO) in Abuja, Ogbeh also disclosed that next year, the government will embark on a programmeto develop massive grazing grounds for cattle to improve the quality of beef and milk in Nigeria, while also making things a little more comfortable for cattle rearers.

He also explained that his ministry will acquire 10 deep water rigs from the Borno State Government and build windmills to operate wells that will provide water for the planned grazing grounds.

WAEC New National Office Head appointed

The West African Examination Council ( WAEC), has appointed new Head of National Officer,Mr Isaac Adenipekun.
Vanguardreports that Adenipekun’s appointment is coming on the heels of the retirement of Mr Charles Eguridu, the immediate past head of national office.
Public Affairs Officer of the council,Mr Demianus Ojijeogudisclosed this new appointment in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.
Mr Charles Eguridu, the immediate past head of national office retired from the service of the council on Tuesday.
According to the statement, Adenipekun, hails from Osun State and graduated from the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife) in 1983.

University Ranking 28 Nigerian varsities among the best in the world

Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND),Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, has said that 28 Nigerian universities were ranked among the best tertiary institutions in Africa,Vanguardreports.
Bogoro said this during an interactive session with members of theCivil Society Organisations(CSOs) and the media, organised by Partners for Electoral Reforms (PER) in Abuja.
While explaining thatTETFUND made huge investment over the last four years in tertiary institutionsacross the country, he said, “four to five years ago, no Nigerian university was ranked among the top 100 in Africa, but today, we have 28 Nigerian universities among the best in the continent.
“I thank God that even the National Universities Commission (NUC) credit TETFUND for that progression.’’ According to him, TETFUND has established Department of Research and Development with a view to encouraging partnership in research and industries in the country,"he added.
Bogoro also appreciated everyone that made this possible.“I am happy to work with staff that believe that education is the best avenue through which we can make Nigeria rise to more competitive level in the international community.’’ He, however, urged CSOs to continue to push for electoral reform, noting that “if we get the electoral process correct, it is likely to move Nigeria forward and deepen our democracy.’’
He commended the convener of the interactive session for providing a platform that would assist in deepening democracy and the electoral process in the country.

OOU Lecturers Embark On An Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Olabisi Onabanjo University(OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, on Wednesday, began indefinite strike over unpaid salaries.

9jaschoolgist recalls that the university teachers, last Monday, protested against the alleged underfunding of the institution established some 33 years ago.

The decision to embark on strike was rea‎ched at the end of the union’s meeting, on Wednesday.
Speaking with newsmen, the ASUU chairman of the institution, Deji Agboola, alleged that the visitor to the school and the governor of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, the Governing Council ‎and the institution’s authorities refused to take action of their demands.

He noted that the demands of the lecturers were genuine considering the state of the school in maintaining enviable positions among other institutions in the country.

Rector Of Maritime Academy Of Nigeria Is Dead

Credible information reaching us confirmed that the Rector of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Joshua Okpo, is dead.
liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine gathered that, Mr. Okpo died Tuesday in Abuja, where he had travelled to for an official business of the academy.
A source at the academy told our correspondent that Mr. Okpo was expected to be at the National Assembly on Tuesday morning to discuss the academy’s budget with lawmakers.
The source said when staff of the academy waited at the National Assembly complex for the rector and did not see or hear from him for several hours, they drove to his residence in Abuja, where they found him dead in his room.
The cause of death was not yet known as at the time of filing this report.
Mr. Okpo’s body was said to have been deposited in the mortuary at the National Hospital, Abuja.

CBN To Re-Introduce Coins To Halt Inflation

The Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) has disclosed that it plans to reintroduce coins currency into circulation to reduce high cost of goods and services in the country.
The Head, External Communications, Corporate Communication Department, CBN, Mr Isaac A. Okorafor who stated this in Ilorin on Tuesday during the interactive session with farmer associations, businessmen and women said the apex bank had done that in the past but many Nigerians did not use the currency.
Okorafor, who was responding to the participants’ questions, noted that since the currency was not utilised by citizens, it lost its value.
He observed that the usage of coins currency in advanced countries reduce inflation and make farms and manufactured goods cost less.
Okorafor said coins currency lost value because Nigerians were not producing stressing that most commodities were jerked up.
“In future, CBN may reintroduce coins. If you go abroad, it is very easy to buy with coins and sometimes, you collect coins as a change and it will be accepted by citizens of that country. So, those of you that have coins should keep it, you can become rich one day”.
An Assistant Director, Development Finance Department,Babatunde Ogunlaja while enlightening the participants disclosed that about N250 billion was made available by CBN for various business associations to access stressing that N40 billion has so far been disbursed.
He advised participants to lodge any complaint of cheating and financial malpractices against them by any financial institutions stressing that the apex bank would redress it immediately.
The CBN also counseled prospective farmer associations and businessmen and women at the interactive session to make use of the credit facilities available at the apex bank noting that many State Governments had utilised the opportunity to empower their people.

Police Arrest Katsina Lecturer Over Sexual Harassment

A philandering lecturer of the Katsina State
School of Nursing and Midwifery (names witheld)
has been apprehended by the police for allegedly
attempting to have carnal knowledge with one of
the female students.

the lecturer asked the female student out and
threatened to fail her if she failed to agree to his
demands.
Sources said the female student had severally
rebuffed the advances of the lecturer but
became agitated when the lecturer threatened to
fail her if she refused to succumb.
It was further gathered that following the threat
from the lecturer, the female student reported
the case to her parents.
The student was said to have been instructed by
her parents to play along last weekend when the
said lecturer invited her to a popular hotel
located in Katsina municipal. The lecturer made
the advances again and was apprehended by the
police.
A staff of the institution told our correspondent
on condition of anonymity that the school held
an emergency meeting on the incident but
declined to say what resolutions were reached
on the matter.
When our correspondent contacted the principal,
Muhammad Lawal Danja on phone, he said the
matter was under investigation and, therefore, he
could not make any statement on it.

OOU Lecturer Threaten To Embark On An Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

Report reaching us has it that lecturers of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) might embark on an indefinite strike over the deplorable condition of the institution and the non-payment of their 16 months salaries by Ogun State Government.
liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine gathered that Scores of lecturers of the instituion, yesterday trooped to the streets of the university town to protest the non-payment of their 16-month arrears, the poor funding of the instituiton, infrastructural decay, empty laboratories and libraries.
Protesting under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), OOU Branch, the lecturers said they had written to Governor Ibikunle Amosun, the Governing Council and the management.
They carried placards, some of which read: “Governor Amosun should properly fund OOU. It is a statutory responsibility”; “Funding OOU should be made a first line charge. It is the first among equals”; “Depending on IGR to fund OOU is an act of gross irresponsibility on the part of state government”; “Education is not a commercial venture, it is a social investment” and “Amosun, don’t destroy the little consolidation Saburi has achieved through TETFUND”, among others.
ASUU Chairman Dr. Deji Agboola said the lecturers might embark on an indefinite strike since the government would not reason with them.
Agboola said the strike would be “total, comprehensive and indefinite”.
He said their demands included reversal of the precarious funding situation at OOU and taking over of the payment of full staff salary to free the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for academic and infrastructural development.
The ASUU chairman also said the lecturers wanted an end to the quality decline at OOU by instituting a reliable funding structure and release of fund for Earned Academic Allowances.
His words: “One prominent way in which the government has been cutting back on funding is the non-payment of full salary of staff and removal from subvention head.
“We have written several letters to the council and the Visitor to this effect. Public education is a social good.
“Government currently pays about half of the full salary of staff at OOU. To make matters worse, the so-called salaries are placed under the subvention heading; a misleading heading which could be misinterpreted as grant meant for research and development of the university.
“Government also pretends that it does not know that this half of full salaries of staff is the subvention sent to the university. In short, the government has failed to send the supposed subvention to the university for 16 months. What a shame,” Agboola said.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Modupe Mujota, could not be reached for comments.
But Governor Ibikunle Amosun had said there was no magic his administration could do now about the funding challenges of the state-owned tertiary institutions.
At the stakeholders’ meeting in Abeokuta, the state capital, in respect of the 2016 budget, Amosun said when the state’s financial fortunes improves, he would address the needs of tertiary education.

NYSC DG advises corps members on self employment after service

Brig.-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, the Director General , National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), advised corps members deployed to Kwara to take the issue of entrepreneurship seriously in order to be self reliant after service.
He gave the advice while performing the official foundation laying ceremony for a new NYSC office complex in Ilorin.
Represented at the occasion by the scheme’s Director of Human Resource Management, Rhoda Kwaki, Olawumi described the move as commendable.
He said that the new office complex, when completed, would not only save cost, but would also reduce the lingering accommodation problem NYSC was facing in Ilorin.
He then commended the Kwara NYSC Coordinator,Henry Enyenihi, for his initiative in commencing the building of a befitting secretariat in Ilorin.
Olawumi advised corps members to always look inward and engage in one skill or the other so that they could be self employed and employers of labour after their service year.
Earlier, the state coordinator had told the director general that he was compelled to embark on the project when on assumption of office in September he met two quit notices on his table.
These, the coordinator said, were the NYSC annex in Fate, as well as his official residence which rent was due.
Enyenihi said that the building project was being financed by a consortium of banks such as Ecobank, Access Bank, UBA, First Bank, Bank of Agric, Sterling Bank and Zenith Bank.
He commended the management of the banks for their cooperation with NYSC in the state and called on other partners to come to the aid of NYSC to complete the building.
The coordinator said the building was scheduled for inauguration on or before May 2016.
He added that the architectural drawings and designs, structural engineering drawing, as well as Bill of Quantity were produced by serving corps members.
Reports furthered that NYSC was sharing office premises with Public Complain Commission, Quality Assurance Bureau on Ahmadu Bello Ave, GRA Ilorin.
In his goodwill message, the state’s Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Alhaji Bolakale Ayo, commended NYSC and the banks for the project.
He urged youths and corp members to key into the change agenda of the Buhari administration and engage in entrepreneurship ventures.
He said “you should always look inward for what you can do to be employers of labour, think of what you can do to contribute to Nigerian economy.’’

LASU Varsity re-issues Chairman's withdrawn certificate

Lagos State University (LASU) management has re-issued the siezed PhD certificate belonging to Dr Adekunle Idris, Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), LASU chapter and Dr Mufutau Yusuf.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) disclosed that Idris made this development known on Monday, at the University main campus in Ojo.
The certificates were re-issued on Dec. 3, after a thorough investigation by an ad-hoc committee of the council, headed by the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Ninalowo.
The re-issued certificates read: PhD Business Administration while the withdrawn Certificates read: Business Administration (Marketing).
“What was done was simply removing the marketing in bracket, rather than withdrawing the certificate as was implemented by the administration of the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa’s adminstration.
“The decision of the council vindicates our Dr Idris and Dr Mufutau.
“It also vindicated the position of ASUU on this unnecessary crisis created by the unjust, draconian, clueless and repressive administration of Obafunwa and his cronies,’’ Ninalowo said.
Dr. Adekunle Idris graduated in 2012, and the PhD certificate was signed by P‎rof. Obafunwa but was apparently withdrawn to distract the union’s leadership following a crisis with the union.

He said the re-issued certificate was, however, signed by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Fidelis Njokanma.
According to Idris, the PhD thesis was supervised by Prof. Ade Oyedijo, LASU, Dean, Business Administration and the then Coordinator of the PhD programme.
He said Prof. Ben Oghojafor, former Dean, Business Administration, University of Lagos, was the external assessor of the thesis.
“The university through the School of Postgraduate Studies had directed Oyedijo to investigate the certificate and write a report.
“Oyedijo had written a one man report which did not go through the department ‎or faculty, stating that the certificates had error.
“He recommended that it should be withdrawn, without specifying that it should be corrected and re-issued, while the Post-Graduate (PG) School in recipient recommended that it should be corrected and re-issued.
“The Senate 17 members out of 87, decided and approved the recommendation of Oyedijo without considering that of the PG school,’’ he said.
Idris hailed the courage of the 10th Governing Council headed by Prof. Ninalowo‎, to speedily resolve the issue.
“The commitment shown thus far by the members of the Governing Council was unprecedented.
“The union is appreciative of the zeal thus far shown by the Governing Council to tackle the myriad of problems on ground,’’ he said.
NAN reports that LASU Senate under the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa had withdrawn 19 PhD certificates over what the management termed error in the title of the certificates issued.
17 of the 19 certificates were later re-issued.

WAEC Group to sue exam body

TheExam Ethics MarshalsInternational is reportedly suing the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for not divulging the names of officials aiding and abetting examination malpractice.
Leadershipreports that the group is demanding that WAEC release the names. It was previously reported that the exam body sanctioned examination administrators who aided and abetted malpractices between May 2013 and December 2014.
The group filed the suit with registration number FHC/ABJ/CS/487/2015 through its lawyer,Mr Jeremiah Akahazemea,demanding for the names of the invigilators, supervisors and the students for prosecution.
Akahazemea asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to compel WAEC to release this information as it would assist the group in achieving its objectives.
The lawyer said that non-disclosure of the culprits made it impossible for education stakeholders, institutions and the public to carry out their civic duties.
Specifically, the group asked the court to compel WAEC to produce its officials that supervised the May/June 2013, May/June 2014 and Nov/Dec 2014 WAEC examinations.
It said this was in line with the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act.

Buhari President urges students to be agents of change

President Mohammadu Buharihas called on Nigerian students to encourage education for sustainable development.
He made this statement during his visit to the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA)during the institution's 27th Convocation.
The president, represented by Executive Secretary,National Universities Commission (NUC),Prof Julius Okojiedescribed universities as potential, powerful agents of change and urged them to take the lead in championing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address education-related issues for national development.
According toTheNationreport, Okojie described universities as potential, powerful agents of change and urged them to take the lead in championing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address education-related issues for national development.
He urges students to fight against corruption which negatively impacts the educational sector.

“Government is determined to fight corruption at all levels, including corruption in our tertiary Institutions. We cannot speak of effective and efficient funding of the education sector if our universities are mired in curses, confusion, fraud and lack of institutional vision,” he said.
He also encouraged the graduands to turn themselves into employers of labour.

“Since the increased advocacy for entrepreneurship and its inclusion in the curriculum of universities by the National Universities Commission and its partners in the university system, higher institutions should henceforth strive to graduate students who are entrepreneurs and employers of labour.”

Out of 4,435 graduands who were conferred with diplomas, first and postgraduate degrees at the ceremony, 28 undergraduates bagged first class, with Osakpolor Eki-Obakpolor of the Physics Electronics department emerging best graduating student with a cumulative GPA of 4.84; while the university graduated 73 doctor of philosophy (Ph.d) degrees, 743 Masters degrees, 829 postgraduate diplomas; 2,675 first degrees and 115 diplomas.

OAU Crisis Varsity management bans student union government

Due to the ongoing crisisat theObafemi Awolowo University, OAU, the school management has hitherto banned the Student Union
Government,PremiumTimeshas reported.
This is in relation to the reports that the students have refused to go on the mid-semester break as directed by the authorities. The management, in a bid to curtail the protest action by the students, had directed that the school be shut down indefinitely. The students were reportedly protesting the terrible state of hostels in the school, among other problems.
According to a statement on Thursday issued by the university’s Registrar,Mr. D.A Awoyemi, some students were planning to cause trouble in the institutionand so the activities of the union has been suspended till further notice.

“The activities of the union is hereby suspended till further notice,” the statement said.

“It has come to our notice that some students are yet to go home, a refusal to comply with these directives shall be regarded as violation of the university rules and regulation in general.”
The Secretary General of the union,Oketooto Oluwaseun, said the Union is yet to react.

“We are in a meeting right now to discuss this latest development , though it is not acceptable,” he said.

ASUU Union to sanction 3 erring LASU members

TheAcademic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU),Lagos State University(LASU) chapter, says the three erring members of the union who refused to appear before the disciplinary committee will be sanctioned.
DrAdekunle Idris, ASUU-LASU Chairman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday ‎in Lagos that the union was awaiting the report of the disciplinary committee before taking appropriate action.
NAN reports that ASUU-LASU had on Nov. 20, invited Dr Tajudeen Olumoko, a former ASUU-LASU treasurer, Mr A.S.S. Asokere‎ and Mr O. Aiyeniko to appear before the Ethics and Disciplinary committee.
A copy of the ‎public notice obtained by NAN said the invitation was to avail the trio the opportunity to verbally defend themselves in respect of various anti-union activities levied against them.
"In line with the constitution, this is to avail you the opportunity to verbally defend yourself.
"With respect to the allegations levied against you for which you had earlier been given an opportunity to explain in writing,’’ the notice said.
Among the accusation levied against Olumoko was ‎writing to the manager of Wema Bank on a forged ASUU-LASU letterhead and directing the bank to freeze the union’s account.
Also, writing to the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa, to stop the entire ASUU-LASU dues, which made the VC to direct ‎the bursar to implement as such among others.
Asokere and Aiyeniko were accused of writing to the Vice-Chancellor as interim Chairman and Secretary respectively, claiming and informing him of the suspension of the Dr Idris-led ASUU-LASU executive.
They were also accused of calling an illegal congress, sending out notices in the name of ASUU-LASU and writing the university administration to suspend deductions of ASUU-LASU members’ check-off dues among others.
According to Idris, the trio did not appear before the committee, following the invitation and so must face disciplinary action.
"We are waiting for the report of the ethics and disciplinary committee, which will be presented for modification and ratification at the ASUU-LASU Congress ‎on Dec. 7,’’ he said.
Idris said that following the congress ratification, the report would be forwarded to the Zonal Council and then to the National Executive Council (NEC) for appropriate sanction.
According to the chairman, the sanction for such offences in ASUU law is usually suspension.
"ASUU constitution is ‎clear on the sanction for such offences and normally, it is suspension from the membership of the union,’’ he said.

Federal Government 'We will not spare VCs who cannot maintain peace on campus'

TheAcademic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)has warned that it would not spare Vice-Chancellors who had not done enough to ensure peace and stability in their institutions.
According to NAN report, National President, Dr Nasir Fagge has said that some Vice Chancellors do not perform their duties satisfactorily - one of which is that they should ensure peace in their institution.
He added that some VCs would rather create confusion among staff and other unions.

Fagge then pointed fingers at VC of Lagos State University, saying that the current crisis is due to the overzealous vice-chancellor wanting to destroy the institution.
“We had a situation where all the trade unions on campus had to rise up and fight the then vice-chancellor to a standstill,’’he said, in an interview with NAN.

“We are happy that the Lagos State Government, which cherishes and knows the need for stability in an academic setting, had to intervene.

“With that vice-chancellor out now, we equally hope that his successor will be able to turn around the plight of the institution for good so that it begins to move to higher pedestal.’’

Fagge also mentioned that the problems facing Ladoke Akintola University of Technologyas one that is caused by the institution having 2 masters.

“They rather find it convenient to pass the buck on each other as regards the plight of the university.

“We believe that the two visitors must have to sit down and decide the fate of this institution so that should anything happen to the university; one will know where to trade the blame.

“We as ASUU will not sit back and watch any person or group of persons destroy what government and other critical stakeholders are toiling hard to build in the interest of our children,’’ he warned.

10 Reasons Why This Generation Is Losing The Ability To Be In Love

Ever wonder what our generation will be known for in the decades to come? I ponder the question regularly.
There are so many great things we could be remembered for, but if history has taught us anything, it’s the negative that tends to last the test of time, not the positive.
My greatest worry is our generation will be looked at as the generation that gave up on love. We date for the sake of dating. The generation that forgot how to love — which is ridiculous. Most people have never had a good understanding of love, just a poor interpretation of it.
Generation-Y seems to be the first generation moving away from conventional takes on romantic, loving relationships.
The only question that remains is whether we’ll be remembered for being the first generation to accept a more logical and rational take on love or the generation that gave up on it altogether.
I guess you’ll be the one to decide.
1. We care more about instant gratification than we do anything else.
The most common trend amongst Generation-Yers is our need for instant gratification. We grew up and continue to thrive in a culture that allows us instant access to just about anything.
If we want food, we have it delivered with the click of a few buttons or we walk a block or two and grab dinner. If we are bored, we have endless distractions in the form of phone apps. If we need directions or a question answered, it only takes us a couple of seconds.
Such convenience is entirely a modern-day perk — previous generations never experienced anything even remotely close to it.
The problem is instant gratification is addicting and often becomes a habit, a habit that tends to seep into our love lives.
Love isn’t meant to be experienced in an instance, but in a lifetime.
2. We’ve built a culture driven by drugs and booze.
This goes hand in hand with our culture’s need for instant gratification. Drugs and booze are the most common form of self-medication.
When we feel sad or unhappy, we go out for drinks. When we’re stressed or unable to handle our lives, we may turn to more intense substances. Of course, not everyone drinks alcohol and/or does drugs, but it is a trend among our generation.
Drugs and alcohol often end up being love’s worst enemy. These substances give us the illusion of an alternate reality — a reality in which our emotions are heightened, and the love we experience becomes exponentially intense.
Unfortunately, all this does is confuse us, making us believe love is little more than the feelings we experience. Nothing could be further from the truth.
3. We sleep around — a lot.
Some less than others, but most individuals have multiple partners every year. Don’t get me wrong, I like sex just as much as the next guy, but sleeping around ends up leaving us feeling empty.
It starts out feeling exciting and gratifying, but ends up making us feel even more alone. Worse yet, it makes finding someone to love infinitely more difficult. You’re wasting your time with people who mean nothing to you and, to top it all off, you are likely to turn sex into a sport.
When that becomes the case, good luck trying to make love. Good luck enjoying sex when sex is no longer a special or unique experience, but just another trivial evening.
4. We’re becoming even more egocentric.
Every individual in the world is egocentric; we all think about our needs and ourselves first and foremost. Whether this is good or bad doesn’t really matter; the world is the way it is. It’s part of human nature.
The problem arises when our egocentricity overtakes our ability to feel empathy. As human beings, we have no choice but to live and function within society, within communities of different sizes.
Relationships are really nothing more than granular communities. When we focus on only ourselves, our needs, our wants and desires, the needs of the others in our community get overlooked. When this happens in a relationship, it all begins to fall apart.
5. We date for the sake of dating.
It’s become a sport — a favorite pastime among Millennials. We date because we believe we’re supposed to date. We’re supposed to find someone to fall in love with and spend our lives with, and we are under the impression that the best way to go about it is to date as often as possible.
This backwards logic brings about countless horrible relationships that never ought to have been in the first place. Every time you date someone who isn’t right for you, you’re giving up your chance to meet someone who is. Same goes for the rest of the world.
6. We aren’t fans of making compromises.
We like to have things our way, always. Why wouldn’t we? If we can have it our way, why would we settle for anything less?
This logic makes sense until we find ourselves in a relationship. When we’re a part of a relationship, we are only a piece of a greater whole. What we want and need is not nearly as important as what the relationship needs.
And what the relationship often needs is for you to compromise. So you’re left with a dilemma, which is fine, as long as you accept that compromises need to be made. Once we no longer accept that as a necessity, we will lose the ability to create a loving relationship.
7. We believe in fairytale endings.
What was our favorite thing to watch growing up? Most people our age will say Disney. We grew up on Disney movies and learned all about love through the stories they told — or at least I did.
The problem is such movies are incredibly inaccurate and often end up doing more harm than good. They create impossible expectations — expectations that always leave us disappointed in the end, not to mention confused.
How could you not question your love for someone when your story doesn’t line up with what you believe defines a happily ever after?
8. We’ve been fooled into believing perfection is attainable.
It’s not. Never has been, never will be, and yet, we are all looking for that perfect individual. We are all looking to become that perfect individual. Sadly, we’re all going to fail, and it’s going to suck.
No matter how unrealistic our expectations are, the disappointment we feel when they aren’t achieved is very real.
The grass always seems greener on the other side. But who the hell told you to look for greener grass?
9. We’re goal driven, but often forget to include our partners in the mix.
I love the fact that our generation is really the first generation to put the focus on the individual, allowing for personal growth and development. I’m proud our generation is the first generation that believes working for ourselves is better than working for someone else.
Having dreams and setting goals are both incredibly important; however, what’s more important is setting the right goals. We need to understand the difference between the things and individuals in our life who hold value and those that do not.
Sadly, this is an area in which our generation is greatly lacking. Most of us put off finding someone to love until after we get the rest of our life together. Not sure why no one realizes finding a partner is the most important piece of the puzzle.
10. Most of us are really bad at loving.
Love is confusing. It has layers and is mutable, changing over time and changing with each new partner we let into our lives. Love is so incredibly complex that most people simply haven’t been able to get a grasp of it.
It’s nothing to be ashamed of, but it is reason to worry. The real question is: Are we getting better or worse at loving? That’s a question I’m not able to answer, but I fear it maybe the latter.
Of course, each individual is different in his or her understanding, but most people seem to be incredibly lost. The issue is if we don’t come to understand love better — its purpose, its boundaries and its shortcomings — we will never be happy.
That’s nothing short of fact.

3-year-old toddler dies after teacher made her sit on hot water conainer in Lagos

A three-year-old toddler, Haliya Abolore, has died in the Gbagada area of Lagos State after she was allegedly made to sit on a hot water container by her class teacher, identified only as Maryam.
It was learnt that Haliya, who was a kindergarten pupil at a private school on Idoluwo Street, Dosunmu, Lagos Island, was allegedly made to sit on the container on Wednesday, October 21.
The toddler ended up having burns in her buttocks and private parts, and was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital for treatment.
It was gathered that the matter was reported at the Adeniji Adele Police Division, while the teacher- Maryam was arrested.The school proprietress, Mrs. Bose Shomoade, was also said to have been invited for questioning by the police, and forced to make part payment of the treatment expenses.
After two weeks, the little girl was moved to the Gbagada General Hospital, for further treatment where she died on Tuesday.
Speaking withPUNCH Metro, Haliya’s father, Abolore, said he took the incident as a mistake on the part of the teacher, who knew the container had hot water, and made his daughter to sit on it.
He said:
“She was first taken to the Lagos Island General Hospital. Later, she was taken to the Gbagada General Hospital. We have spent about N300,000 on her treatment. The proprietress gave us N5,000 on the day of the incident. One week later, she visited the girl. She gave some money to my wife’s mother.
“The school teacher has been arrested and detained after the matter was reported at the Adeniji Adele division. The teacher was careless. He knew the container was used to keep hot water and she still sat her on it. All my daughter’s private parts were burnt. She was asked to sit on a container containing hot water.“My wife is distraught. She has been taken to our family house in Kwara State. Haliya is our jewel. We are so sad to lose her.”
The Coordinator, Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, Mrs. Lola Vivour Adeniyi, said they had written to the state Ministry of Education to investigate the school.
She said:
“It is sad. The abuse of the three-year-old occurred when she suffered horrific burns. She was made to sit on a container of hot water in her school. We have just been informed that she died on Tuesday.
“Apparently, she stopped responding to treatment and the pain was too severe. We have also informed the Ministry of Education about the incident.”
A doctor in the hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The girl died due to complications from the burns.”

Poly Students Urges FG To Stop HND/B.Sc Dichotomy

The newly elected president of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) Olugbenga Adeyeye has called on the Federal Government to put an end to the discrimination between polytechnic and univer­sity students concerning their cer­tificates obtained upon graduation.
He made this call on behalf of others during his inaugural cer­emony at the Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger State recently.
Adeyeye disclosed that the fed­eral and state governments’ at­titude to polytechnic graduates is embarrassing, adding that this is borne out of ignorance regarding the place of polytechnic education to the overall technological devel­opment of the country.
“The 2005 promise made by the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo to end the disparity be­tween Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelors degree (Bsc) is still a disturbing issue as the dis­crimination is still affecting poly­technic graduates anywhere they find themselves,” he said.
The new president reaffirmed his administration stance against continuous disparity between hold­ers of the two certificates in the la­bour market.
He argued that the disparity had hindered career progression of HND holders in the core civil ser­vice.
Adeyeye however appealed to the government to abolish and prohibit dichotomy and discrimi­nation between holders of the two certificates who studied the same or related courses.
He also demanded that the Fed­eral Government should invest more on technical facilities because it was the reason polytechnic was established.
“We will meet with the National Assembly to dialogue and if no posi­tive responses, the polytechnic stu­dent will carry out a peaceful cam­paign on the streets,” he noted.
In his remark, the Rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Dzukogi promised to support the students in any of the genuine course.
The outgoing President of NAPS, Mr. Ogbonnaya Sunday during his farewell speech re-echoed that the dichotomy was uncalled for and should therefore abolished without further delay.

Senate proposes 2-year jail or 2million fine for offenders of abusive statements on social media

ABUJA–A bill seeking a two-year jail term for any person who makes allegation or publishes any statement or petition in the newspaper, radio or medium of whatever description against another person, institutions of government or any public office holder, passed second reading in the Senate, yesterday.

The bill also prescribed that anybody or group of persons who send any false text message or post false message on the social media against another person shall be jailed for two years upon conviction by the law court.
The bill, tagged: “A Bill for an Act to Prohibit Frivolous Petitions and other Matters Connected therewith”, sponsored by Senator Ibn Na’Allah, APC, Kebbi South, compels petitioners to accompany their petitions with sworn court affidavit, failure of which attracts a six- month imprisonment upon conviction.
But the bill provides for an option of N4 million for persons convicted of false newspaper, radio and television statements and N2 million for offenders of false phone text messages or messages on Facebook, twitter, Instagram, or WhatsApp.
“Where any person in order to circumvent this law makes any allegation and or publish any statement, petition in any paper, radio, or any medium of whatever description, with malicious intent to discredit or set the public against any person or group of persons, institutions of government, he shall be guilty of an offence and upon conviction, shall be liable to an imprisonment term of two years or a fine of N4,000,000.00”,the bill specified.
On the social media, the bill read: “Where any person through text message, tweets, WhatsApp or through any social media post any abusive statement knowing same to be false with intent to set the public against any person and group of persons, an institution of government or such other bodies established by law shall be guilty of an offence and upon conviction, shall be liable to an imprisonment for two years or a fine of N2,000,000.00 or both fine and imprisonment.”
The bill said it shall be an offence for any petition to be submitted without a sworn affidavit from the law court.
“Not withstanding anything contained in any law, it shall be an unlawful to submit any petition, statement intended to report the conduct of any person for the purpose of an investigation, inquiry and or inquest without a duly sworn affidavit in the High Court of a state or the Federal High Court confirming the content to be true and correct and in accordance with the Oaths Act.
“Any petition and or complains not accompanied by a sworn affidavit shall be incompetent and shall not be used by any government institution, agency or bodies established by any law for the time being enforced in Nigeria.
“Any person who unlawfully uses, publish or cause to be published any petition, complaint not supported by a dully sworn affidavit shall be deemed to have committed an offence and upon conviction, shall be liable to an imprisonment for six months without an option of fine.
“Any person who acts, uses, or cause to be used any petition or complaints not accompanied by dully sworn affidavit shall be deemed to have committed an offence and upon conviction, shall be liable to an imprisonment for a term of two years or a fine of N200,000.00 or both, “the petition read.
Senator Na’Allah, in his lead debate, during the plenary, where he sought support for accelerated consideration of the bill, said: “Our past has portrayed us as a society where by mere expedience of writing a frivolous petition against public officials, you can have their right abused by taking certain measures that practically took away their right of presumptions of innocence only to be found later that the petition, as strong as it appears, on the paper actually lacks merit.”
“This sometimes, lead to a lot of innocent and most times honest civil servants being taken away from the public service only to be replaced by the dishonest ones, which invariably lead to the draining of the public service of civil servants with the desired integrity to move this country forward simply on grounds of principles.
“As a nation with strong desire to move forward, this negative trend must be reversed, if only the desired objectives of the country,” he stressed. He added: “the bill which appears ‘sunset’ in its nature consists of four sections which in clear terms spelt out the punishment for frivolous petition, and what constitutes frivolous petition.
“The bill seeks to provide punishment for frivolous petitions by making sure that only credible and. Verifiable petitions are presented for public use. “The utility of the bill is to equally save the time for good governance and resources that go into investigating frivolus petitions.The bill would equally assist in shaping our negative thinking by elevating hard work over and above sychophancy and indolence,”he further explained.
“The question to ask is, whether having passed the Freedom of Information Act which gives unfettered access by the public information from government offices they would be right for this government to continue to waste valuable time and resources in investigating frivolous petitions from the same public and I am sure you would find no difficulty in saying no to the ugly situation,”he stressed, while soliciting support for its consideration.

NYSC: Married Woman, 5 Other Corps Members Caught Gang-Banging In Lagos Camp

According to rumours making the rounds from the Lagos branch of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp, 6 youth corps members were reportedly caught gang-banging inside the camp resident.

Reports gathered from a twitter user with the handle @kherlifa shows that a married woman was among the 6 corps members allegedly involved in the orgy of serial intercourse.

As for the married woman, displeased @kherlifa disclosed that‘what will her husband tell his people? So sad.’
According to @kherlifa, grapevines have it that her husband’s penis is small so she decided to get someone with a bigger one in camp.

Truck Crushed Poly Student To Death

The D.S Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, in Ewekoro Local Government area of Abeokuta has been thrown into mourning following the death of a student who was reportedly crushed by a truck.

9ja school Gist gathered that, the victim, who was identified as Ahmed Oladimeji, was an OND 2 student of Business Administration of the institution.

It was learnt that the deceased was reportedly crossing the Expressway in front of the school, when he was knocked down and crushed by the truck.

A source told our correspondent that the victim was on his way to the school to collect his Industrial attachment letter in school when he met he was crushed to death .

According to the findings, the truck was on its way to Abeokuta when it crushed the victim, who probably was not aware that the traffic on both lanes had been collapsed to a single lane.

The students on hearing the sad news about the incident were said to have raced to the scene, but the driver of the truck had escaped.

However, they descended on the truck and set it ablaze. The students were said to have disrupted the traffic, which led to a gridlock.
The protesting students were said to have held up traffic for almost four hours, lasting from 11am till 3pm.

One of those caught up in the gridlock, Adesanmi Sunday said, “It was like a war zone, the students did not allow any vehicle to pass through. The students made bonfires on three different spots between their campus and Itori town.”

Some of them were said to have vandalised vehicles who defied their ‘no movement’ order.

The registrar of the institution, Mr. Bayo Ogundimu, who spoke to newsmen on the telephone confirmed the incident.

He said the victim had just completed his ordinary diploma programme and was heading school to collect letter for his Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme when he crushed by the truck.
He said, “The truck that killed him was coming from Lagos-end and heading to Abeokuta. You know many of those truck drivers are reckless.

“There was a trailer that fell around Itori-Wasinmi axis, and the traffic on both lanes were collapsed into one. It became one-way for those coming from Lagos, because they were facing those coming from Abeokuta.”

Ogundimu who expressed sadness at the incident said the school authorities rushed to the scene with an ambulance and was conveying the victim to the General Hospital, Ifo, but he died on the way.

“We tried our best to save his life but he died on the way to the General Hospital, Ifo,” he said
He said the appeal by the authorities of the school for the students’ to stop the protest fell on deaf ears.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, also confirmed the incident, and said the police had to later disperse the students with canisters of teargas, as they became violent.

He said, “We learnt hoodlums had hijacked the students’ protest. They were extorting motorists in the process, so our men had to disperse them by firing canisters of teargas.”

OAU Institution closed down over students unrest

The authorities ofObafemi AwolowoUniversity (OAU), Ile-Ife,OsunState, have closed down the school after 48 hours of students unrest.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the institution was shut down on Tuesday after an emergency meeting of Senate.
The students started the protest on Monday over epileptic power supply, unavailability of portable water supply in their halls of residence and alleged poor funding of education in Nigeria.
The protest prevented free flow of traffic into and out of the campus.
The institution's Public Relations Officer, MrBiodun Olanrewaju, who confirmed the closure of the university in an interview wih NAN, said that the date of resumption would be announced as and when due.
He however said that the convocation slated for next week would still hold.

UNN Crisis brews as students protest against mandatory laptop fee

Students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN are getting even more agitated over the compulsory N75,000 levy being requested of them by the school management.
According toToday, the students have urged the Minister of Education,Malam Adamu Adamu, to intervene on the matter. The students of the school have described the policy as “corruption of the highest order.”
It has been previously reported that the students were uncomfortable with paying this new fees. The management, in a bid to compromise, assured them that the N75, 000 laptop fee can be paid installmentally. The students still maintained their stance, with one of them saying, “it is so sad that they are making education so difficult for the poor.'
“With this policy, we would now be paying close to N200,000 in a federal university per session. This is wickedness.

“As I speak to you, I’m helpless because my parents don’t have that kind of money. It is wrong for anyone to make computer ownership compulsory. It should be a matter of choice. The management should not use us to make money.”
The students have urged the Education minister to look into the issue.
“We are begging the minister to urgently intervene because they are turning this university into a marketplace.
“If the vice chancellor is interested in doing laptop business, he should find a market for it without placing such a burden on poor students.
“Some of our parents are leaving on N18,000 minimum wage; now they want them to pay N200,000 as school fees for one session. This is wickedness of the highest order. Computer ownership should be by choice,” another student stated

Ajayi Crowther University 11 first class students, others, to graduate

11 first class students out of 370 graduands will be graduating in Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo, Oyo State iduring the university's forthcoming 7th Convocation slated for Dec. 5.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Dapo Asaju said this at a news conference held at the institution on Monday to herald the convocation.
According to him, 68 of the graduands bagged second class upper, 166 made second-class lower, while 113 students graduated with third class.
The institution, was named after Samuel Ajayi Crowther, a renowned black African and first black bishop in the world.
Asaju, who described Crowther, as one of the nation’s greatest personalities in history, commended former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his incisive sense of history, which led to the name of the school.
Asaju said that the institution would soon commence its post- graduate programmes, adding that 70 per cent of its approved post-graduate courses would take-off by March, 2016.
“We have also concluded plans to start the Department of Environmental Sciences.
"Also, we have 110 hectares of land along Oyo-Ogbomoso Expressway where we hope to start our Colleges of Medicine and Agriculture.
“There, we expect that the 64 dioceses will erect at least a building as part of our expansion programme,’’ he said.

Folorunso Adewole Health Minister retire as UI VC

Nigeria's health ministerProf. Isaac Folorunso Adewole, has bowed out of his position as University of Ibadan, UI, Vice Chancellor on Monday, November 30.
According to Leadership, he advised his successor,Professor Abel Idowu Olayinkato build on the foundation laid by his predecessors in office in order to make his own ‘building’ higher.
Adewole's 5 year tenure as the 11th VC of the institution ended yersterday. During the formal handing over, which Adewole described as as first of its kind in the history of the university, he expressed his gratitude to other members of staff of the University.
“It is easy to give credit to the leader, but, a good leader must appreciate that his success comes from the support received from his subordinates and I do sincerely thank you all for allowing me to take the glory,” he stated.
He pleaded for a greater level of support for Olayinka, who he described as a wonderful team player, adding, “Even, if he does not thank you for doing it, God will thank you. It is easy to become the VC, but it is more challenging to succeed in office, if he succeeds, the UI succeeds”.
He thanked the Acting VC, who until he assumed the position was the Deputy VC (Administration), Prof. Ambrose Emilolorun Ayelari for holding forth since his assumption of office as far back as 2nd October this year when he began his annual leave and when in actual fact he had handed over everything about the VC office to him.

Tragic7 students die as fire guts Kano school

Seven pupils lost their lives, while 21 others sustained burn injuries when a fire broke out atGovernment Girls’ Secondary School,Jogana in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The tragic incident occurred when one of the school's hostels went up in flames.
Punchreported that the fire outbreak occurred around 8pm on Sunday and casualties from the fire have now been taken to hospitals for treatment.
The incident was confirmed by Deputy Governor of Kano State,Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, who also visited the scene of the fire.
He sympathised with the families of the victims and promised that the government would offset the medical bills incurred by the injured.
Abubakar directed that the school should be closed immediately to assuage the trauma caused by the disaster and to honour the deceased.
He said to journalists,“Seven pupils were lost to the fire incident, while 25 others suffered varying degree of injuries. A technical committee will be set up soon to identify the immediate and remote causes of the fire, as well as advise the government on the best modality to repair the hostel. The school should be closed immediately to enable the students and the parents to manage the trauma of this tragic incident.”
The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained.

‘WE NEVER PROMISED N5,000 FOR UNEMPLOYED NIGERIANS’ – LAI MOHAMMED

Nigeria’s minister of Information, Lai Mohammed today stirred up fresh controversy by saying that his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC never promised to give unemployed Nigerians N5,000 monthly.
Addressing members of the Nigeria’s Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) at the National Press centre in Abuja this morning, Lai Mohammed said the Muhammadu Buhari administration did not promise unemployed graduates N5, 000 stipends.
“We did not promise 5,000 Naira to unemployed graduates but to vulnerable Nigerians”he said.
