NDA Postgraduate Programmes Admission Requirements – Full Time Basis.
The requirements for the various programmes are as follows:
Master’s (MA, MEng and MSc) Degrees.
A candidate seeking admission into the Master’s Degree programme shall be a graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy or any other recognized university. Such candidate must possess a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower Division) in the relevant field of study.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree.
A candidate for PhD Degree must possess a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower Division) at Bachelor Degree and a Master’s Degree in the proposed field of study from a recognized university. In addition, the candidate must have scored an average of not less than 60% or 3.50 at the Master’s level.
NDA Postgraduate Programmes Admission Requirements – Part Time Basis.
The requirements for the various programmes are as follows:
Master’s Degree.
Candidates applying for the professional Masters programmes must possess a Bachelor degree with a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower Division). Candidates with Third Class degree or Higher National Diploma must also possess a Postgraduate Diploma in a related discipline from any recognised university to be eligible for admission. HND candidates must possess a minimum of Lower Credit to apply.
PGD Programmes.
Candidates applying for the Postgraduate Diploma programme must possess a Bachelor degree from the Nigerian Defence Academy or any other recognised university, or a Higher National Diploma.
Duration of NDA Full-Time Postgraduate Programmes.
Each student admitted for Master’s or PhD Degree shall pursue a FULL-TIME course of study and research in the Academy. Depending on the degree in view, the following conditions are also applicable:
*.A student for the Master’s degree shall pursue the programme for 2 years (4 Semesters).
*.Candidates for PhD degree shall pursue the programme for 3 years (6 Semesters).
At the expiration of the period of study for any given programme, a student who has not completed his/her programme shall be withdrawn from the Academy. However, in exceptional circumstances, application for extension to complete the programme may be entertained. Extension shall not exceed a period of one year (2 Semesters) in case of Master’s degree and 2 years (4 semesters) in case of PhD.
A student of Postgraduate Diploma shall pursue a full-time programme for 2 years (4 semesters) and maximum period of 3 years (6 semesters).
Duration of NDA PArt-Time Postgraduate Programmes.
Each admitted student for professional master’s degree programme shall pursue weekend mode of study and research on Fridays and Saturdays for the period of the study. The following conditions are also applicable:
A student of Master degree shall pursue the programme for 18 months (2 semesters course work and 1 semester for project) except MBA programme which runs for 2 years.
A student of Postgraduate Diploma shall pursue the programme for one year (2 semesters).
NDA Postgraduate Admission – Method of Application.
Candidates are required to purchase Access or PIN Codes available at all Zenith Bank Branches and Cash Offices nationwide at the cost of N7,500.00 only, excluding bank charges of N500.00, for online application.

Upon purchase of Access or PIN Codes, prospective candidates should log on to www.ndapgapplications.netand complete the Online Application Form. Kindly note that your application is not complete until all copies of your Credentials, Acknowledgement Form, Referee Form, Application for Transcripts Form and Medical Report Form, have been submitted along with your application.

LASU Re-opens Students’ Registration Portal for 3 Days

The University Management has approved the re-opening of the Portal for three [3] days, Monday, 12thOctober-Wednesday, 14thOctober, 2015. LASU Management at its meeting of Wednesday, 7thOctober, 2015, magnanimously approved the re-opening of the students’ registration portal for the Rain Semester of the 2014/2015 Academic Session. The students’ registration portal will be re-opened from Monday, 12thOctober-Wednesday, 14thOctober, 2015.
The University Management re-opened the portal on compassionate ground after taking into consideration requests and appeals by the students.
Management thereby directs students who have not completed their online course registration to avail themselves of this opportunity, as there will be no further extension after the expiration of the approved duration.
It will be recalled that the students resumed for the Rain Semester of the 2014/2015 Academic Session on Monday, 31stAugust 2015, while registration portal had earlier been opened on Monday, 7 September, 2015 and closed on Monday, 21stSeptember, 2015.

Nigerian Army 74 RRI Pre-Screening Result, Zonal Screening Date

Eight UI Students Collapse At Exam Centre

Latest report reaching us has it that Eight Open Distance Learning, ODL students of the University of Ibadan slumped at the Adebayo Akande E-Centre, Ajibode, Ibadan, after waiting for hours to write the GES 101 examination.

An impeccable source who promulgate this to liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine said that the students were among the over 3,000 students who arrived at the e-centre at about 8:00 am for the examination. Some of the students were from Ivory Coast. But they were shocked that six hours after arriving the centre, the examination was yet to commence.
liveschoolnews.com.ng recalls that on August 15, 2015, a 100 level Open Distance Learning, ODL students of the University of Ibadan slumped and die at the Adebayo Akande e-Centre, Ikeja, Lagos, after waiting for hours to write the examination.

Many teachers are not licensed – TRCN

Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria has warned teachers against practising without obtaining their professional licence.
It also said many teachers had yet to register with the council.

The Lagos State TRCN Coordinator, Mr. Gholahan Enilolobo, said this during an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday.
The TRCN is a Federal Government agency charged with the registration and licensing of qualified teachers across the country.
According to Enilolobo, about 20 per cent of qualified teachers working in the state have yet to register even as many who registered have yet to pick their licences.
He, however, explained that the agency had registered 16,000 of the 20,000 qualified teachers in the state.
Enilolobo said, “We have been able to register a good number of the qualified teachers. But even those who paid for it do not return for their certificates. I cannot tell you how many of them have yet to pick their licences right now, but this is a major challenge we have. The result is that you have teachers practising in Lagos without a licence. That is wrong. When a driver on the highway does not have a license, he or she will probably be fined.
“Teachers are supposed to be licensed but we discovered that even the employers are not asking for it. We are now trying to work with employers to make it a condition for promotion, seminars and workshops.”
Enilolobo, who noted that certificates and licences were given to registered teachers, added that the agency was planning a conference of registered teachers to enable them to speak with one voice.
However, the state Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr. Segun Raheem, put the blame on the doorstep of the agency.
Raheem, who spoke with our correspondent, said the agency did not have enough manpower to work with.
“Every teacher in public primary schools in Lagos has virtually registered and collected their certificates. If a few have not collected their certificates, then it is unfortunate. The agency does not have enough personnel and their record keeping system is poor. They muddled up the certificates and they are no longer in the alphabetical position. If there are 20 Peters who came for collection, each one has to look through the envelopes and check one after the other. It got cumbersome in the process and teachers became discouraged,” he said.

For All NOUN Students- On NYSC

The following report is a part of the discussion of
the meeting between the leadership of National
Open University Students Association of Nigeria
(NOUSAN) and the School management on NYSC
issue, which was held at the NOUN Headquarters,
Victoria Island, Lagos, on the 22nd of September
2015.
Sequel to that meeting, we have made an earlier
report on the outcome of the meeting, as your
interest(our fellow students) is our paramount
concern and we promise to give you effective
representation and feedback. As promised, this
report will be focused on NYSC discussion
NOUSAN had with the school management. We
implore all students to read through this article
carefully and be guided.

Discussion:
At the meeting, we (NOUSAN) decided to ask,
based on the agitation of our students, why NOUN
students are not being shortlisted for the NYSC
program in Nigeria, as it amount to discrimination
and desolateness, since we form part of the
Nigerian students. The management explained that
the agitation of the students is a misconception of
the NYSC idea.
First, they said the law only permits organizations
to demand for NYSC certificate, it does not matter
which. The NYSC certificate is broken into 3;
1. Certificate of National Service.
2. Certificate of Exemption.
3. Certificate of Exclusion.
These NYSC certificates, backed by law, shall be
accepted by all organisations in Nigeria, and no
organisation will refuse any of the above
mentioned NYSC certificates.
In Open University, all graduating students are
issued a NYSC Certificate of Exemption, which is
equivalent to all NYSC certificates issued to
students in conventional universities. We told the
management, that despite the exemption certificate,
our students who merited the service based on
thier constitutional rights, as provided for by the
NYSC Act, which stipulates that students(below 30
years of age) in any institution of higher learning,
which NOUN is one, should be given the privilege
of the national service to their dear country by the
Nigeria Government, as it will promote oneness
and give NOUN students sense of belonging as
well.

Based on the above reasons given, the
management opinionated that our students are not
being shortlisted for the scheme at the moment
because; the NYSC program accommodates over
100,000 students from about 100 universities all
over Nigeria for service yearly. These students are
given infrastructureslike the orientation camps and
Corpers' lodges. National Open University alone
produces over 50,000 graduates yearly, due to it's
expanded and Open style of education. 50,000
students produced by only one university will
increase the number of students the NYSC program
can accommodate from 100,000 to 150,000, more
than half of it's current figure. There would be
need to expand the orientation camps and
orientation facilities, corpers' lodges, etc. All these
will cost a lot of planning, funding, and execution.
The Open University alone can produce more than
half of the number of graduates that 50 universities
combined, can produce in one academic year.

Since such is the case, then it would be necessary
to expand expand the current infrastructuresand
facilities, enhance adequate security of students,
provide for shelter/accommodation for the students
and majorly, the provision of consistent payment of
students allowances. It would be inappropriate for
NYSC to shortlist Open University students without
securing our lives, without providing shelter for our
students in extreme weather conditions in some
parts of the country, without making provising for
proper funds, so Open University corpers would
not be owed their allowances while they are
serving their country.
Therefore, the Federal Government, based on the
pressure from our school management, directed
the NYSC Director-General to issue all Open
University students NYSC Certificates, since it was
never the students fault for not being shortlisted
for the service. The management also added that
NOUN was not designed for Open University
students to serve initially, as the institution was
initially created for workers and aged class, but
due to the necessity to make education more
accessible to all, Open University then decided to
admit below the age limit and non-workers.
The Management, however assured that, the
Federal Government are working tirelessly to
expand facilities, re-organise and adequately
provide security, and to build adequate
infrastructures, to accommodate qualified Open
University students for the scheme on the long
run. It took years to build facilities to
accommodate the over 100,000 students of the
conventional universities being accommodated
currently by the NYSC, it will take some time to
provide for almost double that number.
On this note, we implore all our fellow students to
see reason with us and the school management,
as efforts are being made to see that all these
obstacles becomes history.
National Open University Students Association of
Nigeria(NOUSAN)has however resolved to petition
the Federal Government to mount more pressure
on the NYSC Commission, so as to speeden the
process of accommodating Open University
students for the One Year service program, up.
We appeal to all students to desist from any form
of violence and publications that may tarnish the
image of our school in the public eyes, while all

Corps member raped, murdered in Ibadan two weeks to wedding

According to a report by The Nation, Omolola Abogunrin, was allegedly raped and murdered by unknown men 13 days to her wedding (October 17th) and on her 29th birthday. The Corps member was reportedly murdered in the premises of an agriculture research institute located at Apata area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital last Sunday.

The deceased was said to have been raped and strangled beside a stream within the premises of the institute. Residents said the deceased appeared to be returning from church when she was waylaid by the hoodlums.

“We saw semen in her private part and nail wounds around her neck when we found her corpse. That was an evidence that she was raped and strangulated,” a resident told The Nation.A family source said:

“Omolola was looking forward to her wedding which was scheduled for October 17, the day she would have been 29 years old. She and her fiancée to be held their family introduction four months ago to pave the way for proper marriage ceremony, scheduled to take place at a Christ Apostolic Church in Ibadan.

”The late Omolola graduated from The Polytechnic, Ibadan. She was on the verge of completing her one year National Youth Service Corpse in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, as at the time of her death.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Oyo State, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said Omolola’s corpse has since been deposited at the morgue of the Oyo State Hospital, Adeoyo. He explained that her lover, Mr Babalola, was arrested and detained as part of police investigation.

“The case has since been transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the command. The Command would make sure the killers are brought to book.”Source: The Nation

NSUK Admits 4078 Students Out Of 24,000 Candidates For 2015/2016

Authorities of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, on Friday asserted that the institution admitted only 4,078 out of 24,614 candidates that applied for admission in to the 2015/2016 academic session.

This assertion was promulgated by the Registrar of the university, Alhaji Dalhatu Mamman.
He said the 2015/2016 admission followed due process in line with academic standard.

“After thorough scrutiny of the candidates that applied for the 2015/2016 admission in to the university, over 4,000 candidates were given admission out of which 3,255 are indigenes of the state, while 823 that got the admission are non-indigenes,’’ said the registrar.

According to him, 24,614 candidates applied for the 2015/2016 admission in to the university, out of which 12,133 are citizens of the state while 12,401 are non-indigenes.

He added that the university admitted only 74 direct entry students out of 152 direct entry candidates that passed the school examination for the admission.

The registrar restated the commitment of the university to continue to collaborate with the Assembly in order to improve on the standard of education in the state for the overall development of the country.

How to Apply for University of Ibadan Direct Entry Admission.
A (i) Candidates are to pay N4, 000.00 (this excludes bank charges) into U.I. Admission Processing Fee Account at the University of Ibadan Micro-Finance Bank (Acct. No – 1050000027). Candidates are advised to keep their bank teller.
The teller should have full names of the candidate (SURNAME first) as indicated in the DE registration print-out preceded by the JAMB Registration number, as the payee.

Name and JAMB Registration Number should be quoted in the depositor’s name at the point of payment (in the Bank). The following format could be adopted:
JAMB registration number/names e.g. 93145667FE/SHUAIB, AKANO, OLUKOYA
(ii) Consequent upon payment of the Processing Fee of N4,000.00 at the bank, candidates are expected to submit their Teller Numbers. This should be done by logging-in on: http://www.admissions.ui.edu.ng with the JAMB Registration Number.
(iii) Candidates are then expected to log-in onto http://www.admissions.ui.edu.ng to submit their biodata, ‘O’ level results, and any of ‘A’ level, NCE, ND, HND, Degree or equivalent certificates.
(v) Candidates should ensure that the on-line forms are carefully filled, following ALL necessary instructions, as “mistake(s)” may lead todisqualification.
B (i) Please fill the on-line forms in CAPITAL letters only.
(ii) Candidates can return to the portal, up till Friday, 16 October, 2015 to edit/complete their previous entries or otherwise review and print their biodata. Applicants should note that no further editing CAN be done after the closing date.

Candidates presenting two ‘O’ level results (6 credits at 2 Sittings except Medicine and Surgery and Pharmacy) should ensure that the comprehensive details of both results are submitted.

The deadline for submission of biodata / ‘O’ level results may not be extended. Any candidate whose data are not submitted within the stipulated time may not be considered for admission.

Misrepresentation/falsification of documents is a serious offence. Candidates are therefore advised to submit genuine documents only. Anyone found guilty of this offence will be disqualified automatically and in appropriate cases, be handed over to the Law Enforcement Agencies.

Candidates are strongly advised to adhere strictly to the guidelines stipulated above for successful completion of the online submissions.

ix) Graduands hiring academic gowns are expected to pay a refundable deposit of two thousand, five hundred Naira (N2,500.00) in cash to their Faculty OfficersORsubmit to their respective Faculty Officers a Guarantor Form duly completed by a staff member of the University. This payment is outside the non- refundable fee of N2,000.00 in (iiic) above, please.
x) All hired gowns should be returned by the graduands to their respective Faculty Officers not later than Tuesday 27thOctober, 2015. Gowns returned after that date will attract a fine of Fifty Naira (N50.00) per day.

MODE OF PAYMENT
i) Graduands should make their payment with Automated Teller Machine. The (ATM) cards acceptable for use are master and verve cards. Each granduand should ensure that the amount in their account is up to the value of the required convocation charges before loging into the Unilorin portal for payment.
a) Based on (iv) (a – c) above, first degree graduands are to pay a total sum of eleven thousand, one hundred and fifty Naira (N11,150.00), Higher Degree graduands (excluding Ph.D.) Nine thousand Naira (N9, 000.00) while Ph.D. graduands, are to pay Ten thousand Naira (N10,000.00) only. Candidates would be expected to pay bank charges of two hundred and fifty Naira (N250.00) in addition to these charges.
Payment for the Convocation materials in iii (a – h) above shall commence from Tuesday 13thOctober, 2015. Graduands are advised to pay early so as to avoid last minute rush.

PROCUREMENT OF ACADEMIC GOWNS
Interested graduands are to note that while the purchase of the University’s academic gown is mandatory for PhD. graduands at a negotiated price of Fifteen Thousand Naira (N15, 000.00) only, Master’s and first degree graduands are encouraged to purchase theirs at a negotiated price of Eleven Thousand Naira Only (N11,00).
While purchase of academic gowns by First and Master’s Degree graduands is optional, acquisition of the gowns for personal use is encouraged as a mark of permanent identification with the University of Ilorin.

According to the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Education,Olabisi Ariyo, the schools were selected following their performances at the 2015 Robotics Competition.

Ariyo said over 130 public and private schools from all over the country participated in the robotics competition, which was organized by Arc Lights Limited.

National Association of Nigerian Students NANS torn apart over ‘Golden Man’ award to Buruji Kashamu

Members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) are divided over the 'Golden Man of the Year' given to Senator Buruji Kashamu by NANS National President, Tijani Usman.

Trouble started after Usman presented the award to Kashamu, a Senator representing Ogun-East senatorial district, at a ceremony held in Ogun state last week.

In a statement issued by its Chairman,Dotun Opaleye, the Ogun State chapter of NANS, criticized Usman and distanced itself from the award.

This incidence is terribly disturbing to all sane minds and is capable of drawing the anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari backwards when men of questionable character who are wanted by American authorities for drug crimes are celebrated by the apex student body," Opaleye said.

"We sincerely ask: What is so golden about Kashamu? Is it because he destroyed the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-West?"

“We decided to honour Senator Kashamu because we know that he is neither the richest businessman nor politician in Nigeria, yet we constantly hear of his philanthropic gestures to Nigerians of all shades and colours, especially the less-privileged.
“We are fascinated at his large-heartedness even in the face of needless distractions.

"We reckon that if all wealthy Nigerians are like Senator Kashamu, the country will be a better place for us all.
"That is why we decided to encourage him by giving him this award.”

But Opaleye faulted Usman's claim of the Senator's 'philanthropic gestures', adding that students of the state have not benefited from him.

“What has Kashamu done for Nigerian students domiciled in Ogun State to merit such award?

"Even in his immediate environment, he hasn’t been able to donate a single toilet to schools like Olabisi Onabanjo University or Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, not to mention other schools in his senatorial district like Tai Solarin University of Education.”

Also reacting to the award, the Ogun State chapter of theAll ProgressivesCongress (APC), has through its Publicity Secretary,Sola Lawal, also faulted the NANS leadership.

“The honour signifies a pitiable erosion of value which points to the fact that indeed the future is bleak for the future generation of Nigerians as represented by the current leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, that has been so debased, backward and visionless,"Lawal said.

In a related development, Kashamu's position in the Senate is at risk as the National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, delivers judgment on a suit challenging his victory in the March 28 Presidential and National Assembly Election on Friday.

Nigeria Education Buhari urged to emulate Jonathan, establish more universities

President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to emulate former President Goodluck Jonathan by establishing more universities in Nigeria to serve the growing population of students seeking admissions at the tertiary level

The Vice Chancellor of theFederal University, Wukari, ProfessorGeoffrey Okogbaa, made the call while receiving members of the Joint Action Coalition of Civil Society Groups.

Okogbaa said the creation of universities in the six geo-political zones by Jonathan's administration helped in no small measure.

“One thing you cannot take away from the Jonathan administration is the fact that he gave education priority attention,” the don said.

“The universities he established in all six geo-political zones have gone a long way to reduce the psychological trauma, rejection and destruction of dreams being faced by many helpless Nigerians in the past."

The group honoured the Vice chancellor with the “Man of the Year 2015” award for his sterling performance as the head of the university.

Panic Hits UTCH Emergency Ward Over Ebola Scare

Nigeria might have another case of Ebola to worry about following the forced closure of the accident and emergency ward of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital over a suspected case of Ebola disease.

The scare was occasioned by a patient’s death at about 2pm on Tuesday, October 6, after symptoms related to the deadly EVD manifested prior to his passing on.

Sources reveal that the unidentified patient was brought in from Akpabuyo local government area of Cross River state, with high body temperature as well as vomiting, stooling and bleeding from the nose.

It was further disclosed that the patient died before any test could be carried out on him, causing the accident and emergency ward to be quarantined on suspicion that the virus might be the cause of death.
The Punch reports that the patient died of Haemorrhagic fever, however, the state Ebola emergency team was invited at about 6pm to investigate sample of the deceased.

Dr Queenet Kalu, the deputy chief medical director of UCTH, confirmed the scare but said the patient was suspected to have died of Haemorrhagic fever.
Kalu who is also the chairman of medical advisory committee, said though a patient was suspected to have died of Haemorrhagic fever, it development does not call for alarm.
She said everything was under control and that the public had no need to be scared of EVD which is yet to be ascertained.

Escape Health FacilityMeanwhile, the new cases of Ebola discovered by the Ministry of Health in Liberia and Sierra Leone has revealed that more needs to be done in combating diseases in Africa, especially within the western region.

In August, there were three new cases of Ebola reported in Liberia, barely two months after being declared Ebola free by the World Health Organization (WHO), a development which some say exposed major vulnerability of African countries to public health emergencies due to infectious diseases.

In the light of the this problem, Dr Pate Mohammad, former minister for state for health, said Nigeria should fully domesticate its capacity for public health disease surveillanceand response as a core public health function of Federal and all states ministries of health.

“I think God knows why He chose a path for everybody because if you look at it, everybody has done gospel music at some point; it worked for some people, and didn’t work for some. That is because we have different purposes in life. I’m only doing this (secular music) temporarily.”

OOU Produces 26 First Class Degrees As 8122 Students Graduate

Onabisi Onabanko University has graduated 8,122 students for 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 academic session.

It was learnt that 26 of them graduated with first class degrees, 1,333 graduated with second class upper division, 4,925 bagged second class lower division, 2,239 bagged third class while 699 got pass.

The best graduating student was Miss Ayorinde Damilola from the Department of Plant Science and Applied Zoology, Faculty of Science with a cumulative grade point average of 4.86.

BoI, NYSC Initiates N2bn Graduate Entrepreneurship Funds to Tackle Unemployment

In a bid to ensure that the problem of unemployment in the country is totally solved, the Bank of Industry (BoI) in collaboration with National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have launched the N2 billion Graduate Entrepreneurship Fund (GEF).

The managing director of BoI, Mr. Rasheed Olaoluwa as quoting the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said that about 1.8 million young Nigerians enter the already saturated labour market every year while 50% of the youths are currently unemployed.

According to him,“The strategy is to identify the innate talents of the young graduates as soon as they leave school, build their capacities for self-reliance, and also empower them to establish their own businesses, thereby creating jobs not just for themselves, but also for other youths that they may employ.”

He also noted that about 1,000 NYSC members will undergo selection and screening processes through an online business idea competition which is aimed at helping them develop bankable business plans.

He said that, the process will form the basis for loan consideration.

(i) The minimum entry requirements for admission into the West African School Certificate, General Certificate of Education(GCE) Ordinary Level, Senior Secondary School Examination Council (NECO) or their equivalent in relevant subjects at not more than two settings; English Language and Mathematics inclusive.
(ii) Candidates who possess good passes in city and in guild, National Technical Education Board (NABTEB-) may also be considered for engineering and Technology courses.

UBA Essay Competition for Secondary School Students – 2015

This is to inform the general public and especially all secondary school students in Nigeria that the 2015 edition of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) National Essay Competition is out. Winners will get educational grants to study in any African University of their choice.
The Essay Competition is a follow up on of the Read Africa initiative of the Foundation, which involves giving out literature books to secondary school students to help rekindle the reading culture amongst the youths in Africa. NOUN Graduate Not Qualified For NYSC

This will be a huge blow to all graduate of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) as report emanating from the institution has it that all graduate of the institution are not eligible to participate in the National Youth Service programme (NYSC)
Provost of Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, Epe, Lagos State and former Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Professor Olu Akeusola, made this know to news men.

This came even as both the students and the management of NOUN have been making a case for the inclusion of NOUN graduates who are below 30 years of age in the scheme.
He said: “You see, we have the tendency of misinterpreting concepts. NOUN isn’t meant for regular students. It is not meant for anybody that has just finished his secondary education.”
NOUN is a flexible programme meant for adults – meant for the working class. It is for people who have sufficient experience, but want academic knowledge and certificates to back up what they are doing.”
Akeusola noted that the manner of instruction at NOUN was part-time and it was not different from other part-time or correspondence programmes, whose graduates were not eligible for NYSC.
“NOUN got it wrong when they started admitting students that are JAMB drop-outs—people who are unable to go to conventional universities through JAMB; and then also fresh secondary school graduates. Automatically, they would be agitating that they want to serve, after all, they are graduates. But the question you should ask is: If we are talking about NOUN as flexible, what about graduates from sandwich programmes? Are they serving? So, what makes NOUN different from sandwich? The only difference is that sandwich is done only during the holidays and it is like part-time. NOUN is flexible, but then, they both don’t receive lectures everyday. They both don’t do face-to-face lectures,” he said.

Unilorin VC laments Inability To Admit More Students For 2015/2016

The astute Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, has bemoan over the inability of the institution to admit more candidates for the 2015/2016 academic session
Ambali laments the inability of the institution to admit more candidates over ten years as thousands of candidates were desirous to attend the institution because of its stable academic calendar.
liveschoolnews.com.ng recalls that the institution will only admitted 7,800 of the 65,000 candidates who sat for the 2015/2016 post-UME screening exercise.
Professor Ambali, who promulgate this at a press conference in Ilorin, preparatory to the 40th anniversary celebration of the university, said this against the backdrop of dashed hopes of several thousands of parents and guardians eager to secure admissions for their wards to the university for 2015/2016 academic session.
He expressed the intention of the university to admit more students, provided the National Universities Commission, NUC, gave approval, saying the university now had more infra structure facilities to cope with more students.
“In view of this development, the management of the university had written a letter to the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, through the National Universities Commission, NUC, so as to look into the situation for the university.
“The university has more facilities, more academic programmes, more good lecturers, more patronage in terms of candidates, and other needed infrastructures that can accommodate more students,” he said.
While speaking on the reason for conducting UTME for a total number of 65,000 candidates, knowing well that the university will only take 7,800, the vice chancellor said the reason was borne out of the quest to have the best student admitted out of the lot,stressing that if he had his way, he would have conducted examinations for much more candidates.
Ambali further said that the institution had been able to set sustainable standard that had now been envy of all universities in the country.
The UNILORIN’s helmsman, however, described academic stability as the selling point of the university which has portrayed the institution as the University of first choice to all applicants across the country.
He said the university was lucky to have academic staff with constructive unionism, adding that the management had also complemented that factor with openness and transparency.
“Usually, the issue between the academic staff and the management bothers on salary, allowance, unconducive environment, lack of infrastructure like water, light and other amenities, gagging of lecturers and others.
“As the chairman of all the chairmen in the university, everyone’s welfare is my priority. When there’s money, we share and it there’s none, we share the moment together,” he said.
Ambali, on the issue of corruption, opposed death penalty for Nigerians found guilty of corrupt practices and opted for lenient punishments of collection of stolen funds and jail term for corrupt leaders in the country.
The VC said: “If corrupt leaders are killed without recovering their loots, we are only trying to transfer the stolen monies to another set of people.
“But if the stolen monies are collected and thereby imprisoned the perpetrators, it will serve as deterrent to others and even serve as lessons to the victim.
“Also, if the perpetrators are killed and the loots are recovered, it becomes double jeopardy. I will want the federal government to look towards this direction in the interest of the country and humanity. Infact, we need to study the nations that practised such idea in the past and look at what has come of them.”
While speaking on the choice of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial appointment, Professor Ambali advocated for the nomination and appointment of person with the interest of the education sector at heart as the Minister of Education.
He said: “We have had some Education Ministers in the past coming from the academia but ended up disappointing the sector. I will want the President to appoint someone that will assist in the growth and development of the sector, irrespective of his/her background.”

Student teams from theUniversity of Lagos(UNILAG),University of Benin(UNIBEN) andAhmadu Bello University(ABU), Zaria, are competing at theShell Eco-marathon, Africa(SEMA) in South Africa.

The students, who are being sponsored by theShell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited(SPDC) Joint Venture, built cars for the marathon which is holding from the 2nd to the 4th of October.

Collectively known as Team Nigeria, they will be competing against 40 other teams from four counties at the Zwartkops Raceway, near Pretoria.

Participating teams build and race energy-efficient cars and the teams whose cars travel farthest with the least amount of fuel is rewarded.

The Managing Director SPDC and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Osagie Okunbor, said the company sponsored the teams as part of its contributions to education in Nigeria.

Nigerian Student Beaten To Death For Allegedly Attempting To Rape A Lady Inside An Elevator

A yet to be identified Nigerian student in Malaysia has reportedly been beaten to death for attempting to rape a lady inside an elevator in a service apartment.

Malaysia's newspaper, Malaymail online, reports that the Nigerian student was mobbed by residents of the service apartment after the victim raised an alarm.
The police was called in and the Nigerian student was taken to the police station with injuries on the right side of his head, and had scratch marks on his legs and hand. He later died at the police station.

"We received a call from the security manager of the apartment who informed us of the incident. When police arrived at 8.20 pm, the suspect was surrounded by 20 to 30 people and his hands were tied.

The victim put up a fight and screamed for help as the lift door opened and several men who were in the area caught the suspect. The suspect was then taken to the police station at 8.45 pm. He was fine and he even walked into the station accompanied by policemen. However, we found him unconscious when one of the officers checked on him. A medical officer examined the suspect and pronounced him dead,” ACP Azmi Abu Kassim, a Malaysian police chief said.The police say a post mortem is being carried out on the deceased. Meanwhile the Nigerian Embassy in Malaysia has not confirmed or reacted to the incident.

Nigerians shouldn’t stone the devil again -Alhaji Sanusi

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, is saddened about the loss of many lives at the stoning of the devil rites during the recent Hajj.

He has advised the federal government to encourage Nigerians who go to Hajj in future to skip that part of the rite unless they get spaces close to Jamrat where the stoning takes place.
According to the Nation, Alhaji Sanusi told Sokoto pilgrims in the Holy Land that stoning of the devil is not worth the blood of any Muslim adding that the refusal to perform the stoning of devil rituals does not in any way invalidate one’s Hajj.

He said:“During the era of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), he permitted pilgrims who came on camels to stay in Makkah after Arafat, instead of staying in Mina and sleeping at Muzdalifa.

“So, if the Prophet could give such grace to some people, just to protect their animals, why didn’t our scholars educate our people properly to avoid this untoward hardship and death.

“Therefore, it will be part of my recommendations to the federal government that, if we cannot get accommodation close to Jamrat where the Arabs reside in Mina, then this year may be the last time we will sleep in Mina and Muzdalifa because we want to stone the devil.

“Besides that, if one deliberately refuses to even perform the stoning of the devil rituals, all he needs to do is to slaughter a ram. So, if this is the situation, why do we go and suffer and die instead of sacrificing a ram?

“As is it presently, sleeping in Mina and Muzdalifa is not backed by any Hadith or verse of the Qur’an. So, why do we continue to do it?”
