SSANU Threatens To Shut Down Universities If…-

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) on Sunday in Lagos disclosed that the association might go ahead with its planned to shut down all universities in the country should the federal government fail to rescind its decision to stop funding universities’ staff schools.
Mr Alfred Jimoh, SSANU’s national vice-president, Western Zone, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the association might go ahead with its planned strike, should the Federal Government privatise the schools.
Jimoh told NAN that the association, which had in June carried out a peaceful protest over the issue, disclosed that it had received a circular to the proposed privatisation.
He said the circular from the Federal Ministry of Education had directed the vice-chancellors of federal universities to stop accommodating teachers of staff schools in their emolument structure.
“SSANU, on receiving the circular, expressed dissatisfaction with the development by threatening to withdraw their services should government go ahead with its plan to stop funding staff schools,” he said.
He warned that the strike, which would be unprecedented, would not only affect students and the education sector, but would also question the current administration’s promise of creating employment for Nigerians.
“In spite of appeals from concerned stakeholders, the government seemed resolute on going ahead with the planned privatisation. Ever since we called on government to review its stand on the issue, nothing seems to have been done on that because we have not received any feedback. Government seems to be going about it in an underground manner. But we are just watching because we shall resist any attempt by the government to carry out its plan if it goes ahead with it.
“On our part, the National Executive Committee of SSANU will meet over the issue from August 27 to August 28 at the University of Jos for the next line of action,” Jimoh disclosed.
He urged the government to reconsider its stand on the issue in order not to allow the peace being enjoyed in the universities currently to be truncated. (NAN)

(i) Candidate must possess National Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning and must have a minimum of lower credit pass (CGPA 2.50) and five credits pass in NECO/WASC/NABTEC/ANTC with credit pass in relevant subject to the programme, i.e., Mathematics, English Language, Geography and two subjects from the followings; Economics, Technical Drawing, Statistics and one Science subject from Chemistry, Physics. Biology/Agric Science, Fine Art.

6.0 SCHOOL OF PRELIMINARY STUDIES
a. One year Advanced Level (A/L course of the IJMB, Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru, Zaria in Christian Religious studies, Geology, Government, Islamic Religious Studies. Physics, Sociology, Mathematics (Special), Chemistry, History, Accounting, Biology, Business Management,Geography,Literature and Economics.
b. IJMB Basic English Language and Mathematics (i.e. O/L English Language and Mathematics).
c. Pre-IJMB Remedy all O’ Level Subject including Mathematics/English not passed at Credit Level Six (6) Months Duration.
6.1 ENTRY REQUIREMENNT
a. IJMB ‘A’ Level (One Year)
Candidates must have five subjects in the SSCE, NECO or WASC at credit level which may include English Language and Mathematics, three of which must be relevant to one of the combinations offered by the school at maximum of two sittings

FG Reverts The decision to Upgrade Colleges of Education to Universities

The Federal Government has reverted its decision to upgrade some colleges of education to universities of education.
It would be recalled that the Federal Government had earlier approved the upgrade of Federal College of Education, Kano; Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo; Federal College of Education, Zaria; and Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri to universities of education.
Consequently the provosts of the affected institutions have been directed to resume in their offices immediately.
Responding to this, the Provost of the Provost, Federal College of Education, Kano, Dr. Rabi Jubrila Muhammed, debunked the rumour that this reversal was influenced by the provost if the institutions mentioned, saying it was not possible four for provision to influence the decision of

WAEC is Not Considering CBT Yet - WAEC Official

The Head, National Office, West African Examination Council, Charles Eguridu, has said the council is not considering adopting the Computer-Based Test mode for its examinations.
According to him, it will amount to “intellectual dishonesty’’ for him to say that the council would introduce CBT in the next five years or the near future.
He further stated that the purpose of education is not to pass examinations but to prepare people for life and unfortunately CBT cannot ensure that.
“There is what we call the cognitive domain; that is what you have learnt that you can put in your head.
“There is also what we call affective domain that has to do with your emotions.
“There is also what we call the psychomotor domain that is skills which you can express using your hands and your body.
“I am yet to see any education expert who will tell you that you can measure the psychomotor domain using CBT.
“Any test that will use computer to evaluate who will be a good carpenter cannot be a valid test.’’
He said the examinations conducted by the council took into cognizance the three domains that measured ability to recall, apply and practicalise.
He said that even in Netherlands where CBT is prominent, the country has not yet started using CBT in all it exams.
“In Netherlands … they have not been able to migrate 40 per cent.
“How many schools in Nigeria have hardware? How many schools in Nigeria have the facilities to have those computers?
“There is the additional problem of electricity and internet connectivity.
“What JAMB is doing is commendable because theirs is an admission test; it is a certification examination.’’

How Buhari Plans To Reduce Tertiary Education School Fees

Students of tertiary institutions may be on the verge of paying lesser school fees if reports from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund) is anything to go by.
A report byPremium Timesquoted the executive secretary of TETfund , Suleiman Bogoro, to have said that, subject to an approval by the National Assembly, the federal government may have started the process to increase the two percent education tax, with which it supports TETfund, to about four percent.
Mr. Bogoro who spoke during a press conference on Wednesday, informed that the federal ministry of education had already sent a comprehensive report to the presidency to facilitate the increase.
President Muhammadu Buhari wants to reduce the cost of tertiary education in Nigeria

He said:“For us at TETfund, it may just be that government has taken a decision and we are supposed to ensure that it is facilitated and whatever contribution we need to make to add to an Executive Bill emanating that would raise the collection from two to four percent,” adding that the increase would mean a lot for TETfund.”
Bogoro also explained that TETfund has been effective in the areas of research and development, which have led to improved performance of Nigerian universities, which according to him has also impacted on their ranking in Africa (28 Nigerian universities ranked among the top 100 in Africa).

According to him:“We are not feeling good that we are still outside the 2,000 mark for the world. Out of the 1,000 global universities there are only five African universities, three from South Africa and two from Egypt.

“If we increase the intervention and there is patriotic application of the funds in the priority areas, the ranking of our universities will begin to compete with the very best in the world.”

As a way of ensuring reforms in the education sector, the registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB-), Prof Dibu Ojerinde recently predicted that Post-UTME screening exercise organized by higher institutions in Nigeria with soon stop following the introduction of the Computer-Based Test (CBT)

Abia targets 100,000 youths for technical education

rAbia State Government says no fewer than 100,000 youths across the 17 Local Government Areas in the state will benefit from its proposed “Education for Empowerment” programme aimed at reviving technical skills among youths.
Deputy Governor, Ude Okochukwu, who disclosed this at a stakeholders’ engagement meeting held in Umuahia, added that already, three technical colleges, namely Boys Technical College, Aba; Government Technical College, Ohafia; and Afara Technical College, Umuahia had been selected to serve as pilot take-off schools for the project.
He said that the project, which is expected to commence in a month’s time, was aimed at reviving technical colleges in the state to train youths on technical skills for self-reliance.
Okochukwu also regretted the dwindling interest of youths in vocational studies, adding that the state was determined to encourage technical skills among youths to curb youth unemployment.
He hinted that the state had engaged the services of the proprietor of Kiara College in United Kingdom, Mr. Endi Ezengwa, “to help revive technical and vocational education” in the state.
Meanwhile participants at the forum were unanimous that revival of technical skills among youths should be given a priority by stakeholders to help reduce unemployment.
Later in an interview, Ezenwa told journalists that equipping Abia youths with technical skills was a better form of empowerment than giving them vehicles. He maintained that inculcating technical skills in youths would help them become “publicly employed, privately employed or self-employed”.
Ezenwa further said the training would be based on the manpower needs of the local industries, adding that the industrialists would be engaged to make known their specific manpower needs.
According to him, the project will help improve the standards of goods produced by the small scale industries in Aba, the industrial hub of the South-East zone.
He also said that psychometric tests would be conducted for the trainees to determine their educational and entrepreneurial capabilities to enable them to train in the area of competence.

Stella Marris pupil wins FCT JET competitiong

The Best Graduating Student of Stella Marris Schools, Abuja, Master Essien Ibok, has won another laurel for himself by emerging winner of the Junior Engineering Technicians and Scientists competition organised for private and public schools in the Abuja Municipal Area Council.

He contested with winners from the six
local councils in the Federal Capital Territory and emerged winner, thus becoming the best student in the FCT too.
According to the school’s Head Teacher, Bitsu Zamani, Ibok will represent the zone in the national round holding in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He added that if the boy won the national competition, he would make the nation proud in North Korea, where the final edition will take place.

According to him, the competition was organised by Universal Basic Education Commission to develop the pupils, especially in science-related subjects.

Student Writes Exam On Wedding Day In Her Wedding Dress

Student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), Ondo State were flabbergast when a lady stormed the exam hall garbed in wedding gown.
According to the Nation, an HND 1 Accountancy student of Department of Accountancy, Oluwatunmise Adejube had no choice than to appear to write her examination after she was pronounced a new bride.
Adejube was accompanied by a group of young ladies, who stormed the school in a convoy of three exotic cars

After she said “yes I do” to her beau, Oluwatumise, a student of Department of Accountancy, hurriedly left the Owo Local Government Area, where she swore matrimonial oath, and rushed to the school for her Higher National Diploma (HND) 1 examination.

It was gathered that an hour later, Oluwatunmise was on her way from the examination hall to reception, where her husband and guests were waiting for her.

An invigilator, who spoke told the Nation on condition of anonymity, said Oluwatumise was allowed to write the paper despite her lateness for the exam because of her determination not to be carried away by the euphoria of her wedding.

Speaking with our reporter after writing the paper, Oluwatumise, who now answers Mrs Adesina, said she had no choice than to leave the court room to write the paper, stressing that her education was as important to her as her marriage.

She said: “When the wedding date was fixed some months ago, nobody knew it would clash with my second semester examination. What appears to be a saving grace for me is that, both the wedding and examination are taking place in the same town. If otherwise, I would have missed the three-unit paper and carry it automatically.”

The groom, Adesina, told the Nation that he was startled when his bride told him the examination timetable clashed with the wedding. He said he , Production Management, was considered the toughest and her spouse would be writing the paper on the day of their wedding.

He said: “I really praised her dogged determination. It was like a tug of war because she had to prepare for her exam and ran around for the wedding at the same time. Now that the confusion is over, I give thanks to God for making it easy for us.”

OAU Rank Nigeria’s No.1 University

The distinguished position of the Obafemi Awolowo University among its peers in Nigeria has again been reaffirmed, as it has been ranked as the first university in the country.
In the 2015 University Web Ranking conducted by an international institute which ranks universities across the globe, Cybermetrics Lab of Spain and released Thursday (August 20, 2015), adjudge the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, as the best university in Nigeria, for the fifth consecutive time.
A statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of OAU, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, on Thursday, stated that the university ranking body rated the curricular, research, academic and general administration of the university as the best in the country.
Olarewaju stated that in the latest ranking, which was released on Monday, the universities of Lagos and Ilorin came second and third respectively.
Reacting to the news, the Vice Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Bamitale Omole, said this was the first time in the history of higher education in the country where one university “would maintain its position as the first and the best in the country for more than four consecutive times.”
Omole attributed the feat to years of hard work and dedication to duty of the academic, administrative and technical members of staff, “whose contributions have placed the university far and above more than 100 other universities in Nigeria.”
The statement partly read, “Prof. Omole emphasised his determination to make training and retraining of members of staff, on a regular basis, his topmost priority, adding that he would not rest on his oars until OAU becomes the best in Africa, and one of the top 10 in the world.”
Omole called on the Federal Government to invest more funds into university education in the country in order to achieve more.
The VC also called on the alumni of the university to assist the school in the overall development of the institution “so that the OAU would grow more in leaps and bounds in the realisation of the dreams of the founding fathers.”

Students, Parents Lambaste Babcock University Over Fees Hike

Parents and students of Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, have publicly lambaste the increase in the school fees for the 2015/2016 academic session by the school authorities, describing the new fee as outrageous, unspeakable, nasty, atrocious, wicked and unjustifiable.

According to the parents, the new fees is between 25 to 100 per cent higher than the old fees depending on the course of study, a development, which they rejected.

9ja School Gist learnt that the new fee released on Monday indicates that Law students, who were earlier asked to pay N800, 000 per session, are now to pay N1.5 million as a full session fee, while the medical students are to pay N3.1 million, instead of the N2 million earlier stipulated.
Some of the parents, who spoke with the our correspondent, said they could not understand why the university authorities increased the fees after they had already paid the fees released in July.

A parent, Mrs Sarah Martins said: “This is suicidal. The school is very inconsiderate. It would even have been better to increase the fees gradually but to increase it by that much all of a sudden in the face of the economic hardship in the country is killing.”

A 400-level student of Economics Department, who spoke under condition of anonymity, described the hike in fees as insensitivity on the part of the school’s management, adding, “I am in my final year and I just saw that I am paying the most expensive fees since I entered the school in 2012. Never have I had to pay this much. I don’t even know how to tell my parents.”

Another student of Medicine and Surgery claimed that the fees were not rumours being formulated, but was available on the school website for all to see.
The Director, Department of Communication and Marketing of the institution, Mr Joshua Suleiman, in his response, while speaking with Nigerian Tribune said that the increase was occasioned by the devaluation of the naira against the United State dollar.
He said: “The increase in fees is a result of the devaluation of the naira coupled with the economic hardship being experienced. The value of the naira has dropped.

Things are not the same way they used to be. The university, known for its high standard, decided to find means to keep in touch with the economic situation so as to continue to provide its excellent service that it is known for.

“The decision was not made solely by the school administration, but was made in a meeting involving the management, the parents’ representatives and the students’ representatives. This is the first time in five years that the school is increasing its fees.”

The Babcock University Student Association (BUSA) President, Mr Kako Mavalla, cautioned students to keep calm and civil, while registering their displeasure. He also urged them to wait for the outcome of a scheduled consultative forum between parents and the authorities early in the month of September.

Aye Vs EiyeKwara Poly denies 16'dead cultists'as Police arrests 42 suspects

Police in Kwara state have arrested 42 suspects in connection to last week's cult war in which 16 cultists, believed to be students of theKwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, were reportedly died.
The arrests come even as the management of the polytechnic denied reports that its students were involved or killed in the clash between Aye and Eiye confraternities last weekend.
According to several reports, the violence started with an attack in the polytechnic, escalating into a war in which 16 students lost their lives in separate attacks.
An eyewitness who was quoted in a The Nation report said it was an isolated killing that triggered reprisal.
"It all started around 4 pm at the weekend. A victim who lived at Agbooba was killed beside a bridge close to the filling station at Oja Tuntun area of Ilorin," the source reportedly said.
“Another dead body was found at Victory Hotel, Agbooba on Sunday.
"One suspected cultist was murdered at Irewolede yesterday. The deceased was chased to the area and in the process was matcheted by his assailants."
At least one of the attacks is believed to have happened on campus, during the screening of aspirants for the Students Union Government’s election at the weekend.
But the Deputy Rector, Administration, of the polytechnic, Engineer Ahmed Aminu, said there was no such violence.
"We wish to tell the public and media that it is not true that there was a cult clash on our campus," he said.
He added that if any clash occurred as reported, then it had nothing to do with students of the polytechnic.
Following the attacks, the spokesperson of the state police command, Ajayi Okasanmi (ASP), had confirmed the arrest of 30 suspects on Monday, 14 of whom are culpable.
Reports quoting the police indicate that a further 12 persons were arrested later, bringing the total number of suspects to 42.

Nigeria Education Buhari under pressure as ASUU rejects downgrade of 4 universities to COEs

Universities workers' unions and other stakeholders have turned to President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged plans by the Federal Government to downgrade four universities to college of education status.
According to rumors, the universities;Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, Ondo State;Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri, Imo State;Federal College of Education, Zaria; and theFederal University of Education, Kano, are all penciled down for downgrade, a move which theAcademic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)and theSenior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU)have rejected.
Agitations began last week when the news broke that the universities, which were originally colleges of education upgraded by the administration of former PresidentGoodluck Jonathan, would be downgraded.
Though there is no official communication from the government confirming or denying the move, stakeholders in the affected institutions are certain that the Buhari administration is set to downgrade the universities as it restructures the education sector.
Speaking withPunch,the Chairman of the Adeyemi Federal University of Education Joint Non-Teaching Staff Action Committee Chairman, Femi Lademikan, said there is no reason to downgrade the universities.
“We want our university to remain," Lademikan said.
"We are appealing to the government through this peaceful demonstration that what we want is our university status.
“We want to tell President Buhari that we have everything required to make this institution a university.
"We have the people, resources and everything to take to maintain this school.
"We have the structure and the enabling environment, just as we are peaceful and cooperative."
He called on Buhari to reject the plan.
“Mr. President must not listen to people who don’t love him, sycophants and those enemies of progress.”
Similarly, the Chairman of the Federal University of Education, Kano, chapter of ASUU, Dr.Abubakar Haruna, alleged sabotage.
"We feel that the President must have been misinformed on the objectives for which the colleges were upgraded. The damage this decision would do to host communities is better imagined.
“The plot to revert this development, in our opinion, is unpatriotic, counter-productive, obnoxious and retrogressive."
With no official communication on the matter, it is hard to know what moves the President is likely to make.
However, any move the FG makes would be expected to take students into consideration because some of them enrolled in these institutions because they are universities.

Nigeria Education "Private universities are not costly" — Oyedepo

Bishop David Oyedepohas said private university are not too expensive if their facilities and quality of education they offer is considered.

Oyedepo said this while addressing journalists at a press conference to mark the second convocation ceremony of theLandmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State.

According to him, the seemingly high tuition fees charged by private universities are justified because financing private institutions is an expensive endeavor.
"Private universities are not costly, judging by the standard, availability of equipment, learning condition, competitive remuneration of teaching staff, among other provisions that make an environment conducive. Rather, people should commend private university owners, in the face of several challenges they face in the country," he said.
Oyedepo, who is the Chancellor of the university, called for improved funding of education in Nigeria.

Landmark UniversityAgain, over 10% of LMU's 573 graduates earn 1st class degrees

Over 10 percent of the 573 students graduating in the 2014/2015 set of theLandmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State, earned first class degrees for the second year running.
According to the Chancellor of the University, Omu-Aran, BishopDavid Oyedepo, who spoke with journalists at a press conference to mark its second convocation ceremony, 59 of the 573 graduates will be awarded first First Class Honors degrees.

A further 226 emerged with Second Class Upper, while 276 finished with the Second Class Lower degrees and 12 got Third Class Honours.
The 59 students represent just over 10 percent of the total, equaling figures for the 2013/2014 session in which 39 of the 386 graduating students earned First Class Honours.

Oyedepo had at the time called the graduates a "set of pathfinders also as highly employable graduates, having been specially equipped as productive human resources entities."
LMU was established in 2011.

Female Student Dies Of Suspected Food Poisoning

The family of Oluwakemi has been thrown into mourning following the death of their daughter, who was said to have died after visiting her brother-in-law in an unidentified area in Lagos.

9ja school Gist gathered that the 23-year-old lady, identified only as Oluwakemi, was found on Sunday foaming in the mouth, after which she died in a hospital.
Our correspondent learnt that Oluwakemi, who was said to be a student of a polytechnic in Oyo State, had come to Capacci, Mowe, Ogun State, two weeks ago to stay with a friend for a church convention.

It was gathered that when the convention was over, Oluwakemi said she would be visiting her brother-in-law in an unidentified area in Lagos before returning to the campus.
Our correspondent learnt that Oluwakemi went on the visit on Saturday, but came back to complain about headache.
On Sunday when the friend and neighbours left the house for the church, Oluwakemi reportedly stayed behind.
Our correspondent gathered that the lady was, however, met foaming in the mouth by afternoon. She was then rushed to the Redeemed Health Centre, Mowe, where she later died.
The matter was said to have been reported at the Redeemed Police Division, Mowe.

A resident, who identified herself only as Mama Afeez, said Oluwakemi might have died from suspected food poisoning.
She said, “The girl did not stay in this area. She came from Oyo State to stay with a friend who was attending a church convention. When the convention was over, she said she would be visiting the husband of her sister in Lagos. So, she went on Saturday.
“It was when she came back that she started complaining about stomach upset and headache. On Sunday morning, she could not follow others to the church. She slept inside the room. But when everyone returned, she was found foaming in the mouth. She was rushed to the hospital, where she died.

“The family members have come from Ibadan to take her corpse.”
Our correspondent learnt that the family had requested the lady’s corpse from the police for burial.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident. He added that the case was reported as sudden death.

He said, “The case was reported, but the police are not investigating anything because no foul play was suspected. The family members have come to the police to take the corpse for burial.”

FUOYE To Admit 1000 Students Out Of 6000 Post-UTME Candidates

Authorities of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, in Ekiti on Tuesday asserted that the institution will only admit One thousand students out of Six thousand candidates that sit for the 2015/2016 post-UTME screening test.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Isaac Asuzu, said on Tuesday that the school would only admit 1,000 students as recommended by the National Universities Commission.
Mr. Asuzu, who spoke to journalists at Oye Ekiti, also disclosed that two students of the institution had been expelled for engaging in examination malpractices.
Although he would not disclose the identities of the expelled students, he said they were caught cheating during examination in the 2013/2014 academic session.
He said the matter was properly investigated and tried by a disciplinary committee before they were expelled. Asuzu also said the action was to ensure discipline and academic standards of the institution.
Mr. Asuzu stated that the university had taken delivery of equipment worth N500 million to equip the newly built laboratories to boost research in the institution.
According to him, the school had procured 175 Desktop Computers for robust Information Communications and Technology in all the departments, just as Scale G Firm, a private organization had donated equipment and trained the technical staff in a bid to increase the technical-know how of personnel.
Mr. Asuzu was optimistic that with the facilities being put in place, the school would be able to secure accreditation for 29 out of the 30 courses by National Universities Commission.
“We are very optimistic that many of these courses will get full accreditation. We have provided facilities that can meet up the NUC’s standard,” Mr. Asuzu said.
“What makes our achievements more rewarding is the fact that we did all these facilities through the internally generated revenues of this institution.
“We are working to meet the standards and nothing shall be spared to make sure that the standard is not compromised.”

Rivpoly to honour two students for winning contest

AUTHORITIES of the Rivers State Polytechnic have promised to honour two of their students for emerging victorious at a national competition on public speaking/debate.

The students are Essien Udefa of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology and Zealous Koate of the Mechanical Engineering Technology.

They came first in the competition the National Youth Service Corps organised at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akoko, Ondo State.

The second and third positions went to students of AAUA and the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State respectively.

Speaking on the students’ performance, the Deputy Rector of the polytechnic, Mr. Princewill Daboikiabo, said they made the institution proud by winning the competition.

Daboikiabo explained that with their victory, the polytechnic would represent Nigeria at the finals of the African Championship later in the year at the Great Zimbabwe University, Zimbabwe.

The academic said, “The Rivers State Polytechnic is celebrating the gift of excellence. Two of our students beat others from higher institutions of learning in the National Public Speaking and Debate Championship for Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.

“The African Championship is a brainchild of Impact Africa International with headquarters in the Republic of Benin. It is an international organisation with the aim of contributing to Africa Sustainability Development and developing youths for responsible leadership in Africa.”

Daboikiabo explained that the feat was worth celebrating, adding that the school would soon recognise the efforts of the winners.

He added, “We are particularly happy that two of our students who represented the school have made us proud. This, indeed, is worthy of celebration and we are planning big to honour them.

“They put Nigeria on the continental map of the people in the frontier of academic excellence. We are going to invite Nigerians soon when the school will host them for making it proud.

“The joy in our heart is enormous and we will continue to honour any exceptional student of the institution.

Workers kick as FG plans downgrading of varsities

Alleged plan to return the four newly-created universities of education to their former colleges of education status is causing ripples among stakeholders, CHARLES ABAH and ADE AKANBI report
From the Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, Ondo State; Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri, Imo State; Federal College of Education, Zaria; and the Federal University of Education, Kano, there was agitation bordering on the same issue last week.

The agitators were members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities. Their mission was similar: the protesters were kicking against the Federal Government’s alleged plan to reverse the upgrading of the institutions.
The former President Goodluck Jonathan, at the twilight of his administration, had upgraded these colleges of education to universities.
Curiously, till date, there has not been a statement from any government quarters confirming or denying the move. From the National Universities Commission, the body statutorily saddled with the responsibility of overseeing the nation’s universities and the Federal Ministry of Education, mum is the word on their lips.
At least as of Monday, no one had officially talked about the planned downgrade, yet these schools have not known peace in the past few days. When contacted, the National Universities Commission’s Head of Public Relations, Ibrahim Yakassai, only referred one of our correspondents to the FME.

The ministry’s Spokesman, Mr. Olu Lipede, who initially promised to get back to one of our correspondents, did not eventually respond to the several calls made to his telephone.
Lipede had earlier promised to find out the “true position of things” from his superiors, but he never did that as of the time of going to the press by 8pm.
However, for the protesting workers, there is no smoke without fire.
According to them, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has concluded arrangement to downgrade the universities in line with its plot to restructure the nation’s education sector.
Speaking on the development, the AFUE Joint Non-Teaching Staff Action Committee Chairman, Femi Lademikan, said the workers of the institution had cause to protest against the plan.

Lademikan said, “We want our university to remain. We are appealing to the government through this peaceful demonstration that what we want is our university status.

“We want to tell President Buhari that we have everything required to make this institution a university. We have the people, resources and everything to take to maintain this school. We have the structure and the enabling environment, just as we are peaceful and cooperative.
“Mr. President must not listen to people who don’t love him, sycophants and those enemies of progress.”

The FUEK-ASUU Chairman, Dr. Abubakar Haruna, laid the blame on the doorsteps of the former provosts of the colleges. According to him, the former administrators are conniving with some powerful persons in government to persuade the President to return the institutions to their former status.
Haruna added, “We feel that the President must have been misinformed on the objectives for which the colleges were upgraded. The damage this decision would do to host communities is better imagined.

“The plot to revert this development, in our opinion, is unpatriotic, counter-productive, obnoxious and retrogressive. As you may be aware, NCE used to be the minimum teaching qualification after the phasing out of the Grade II Teacher Certificate in Nigeria.
“The nation has reached a stage when the university degree in education would become the minimum qualification for teaching in the national teacher education policy.”

However, a retired professor of Political Science, Kayode Soremekun, disagrees with Lademikan and Haruna.
Soremekun, who said that he would support the policy somersault, noted that these newly upgraded schools did not have the quality workers to mount the programmes.
“Let them not deceive anybody. They will claim to have the right environment and workers but when you go there, it will be a different thing on the ground.

“Well, they do not have enough faculties to run these universities. I tell you many of them do not have the staff. Generally, there is a chronic shortage of human resource in the nation’s university system. To that extent, they are going to dip into the same pool, which is not increasing anywhere. In this regard, I shall support the policy change considering the paucity of the work force.”

The former Obafemi Awolowo University lecturer also noted that the Jonathan administration might have upgraded these institutions out of desperation to score some cheap political points.
He explained, “Jonathan might have done what he did then for political reasons, especially to gain electoral victory. He was ready to do anything then to gain some mileages politically. If one even checks the spread of the schools, one would see that it had a touch of geographical intent. In any case, you cannot divorce anything from politics.”

Meanwhile, ASUU at AFUE has warned in a statement that the planned reversal will elicit crisis in the university.
In the statement by its Public Relations Officer, Olaolu Olaniyan, the union, therefore, urged the Federal Government not to take such an action.
According to the union, the planned reversal will amount to backwardness for the institution.

The statement read, “It is utter dismay and outright displeasure, the disturbing rumour making the rounds about the purported reversal of the long-awaited and hard-earned university status of Adeyemi Federal University of Education and three other newly-upgraded universities of education. We want to express our unequivocal rejection of such a reversal, which is only capable of creating avoidable tension in the new university community and the host community by extension.
“It is worthy of note that the university has been in the vanguard of turning out well trained teachers for the Nigerian education system for an upward of five decades. The upgrading of the institution into a full-fledged university was premised on several factors, chiefly, the high quality of members of the academic staff who have worked assiduously over the years to produce an array of well-trained teachers for the primary and secondary school components of the Nigerian education system. The institution also runs postgraduate diploma in education programme.

“We firmly subscribe to the belief that the Federal Government’s decision to upgrade the institution into a full-fledged university is a step in the right direction to revamp the Nigerian education system, which is at an all-time low at present. Production of well-trained teachers with bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctoral degree in education would go a long way to salvage the ailing Nigerian education system.
“While we appreciate the quagmire into which the Nigerian economy has been plunged, it is not a sufficient reason, as retrogressive elements adduced, to truncate the implementation of the university status of the institution, which would have profound positive impact on educational development in Nigeria in the proximate future. It is therefore in the light of the foregoing that the union rejects in absolute terms any attempt to truncate the upgrading of the institution to a full fledge university status.”

The students too did not shy away from the agitation. According to the President, Student Union Government of the AFUE, Mr. Isiaka Kamarudeen, they will continue to kick against any regressive action against the institution.
To support their teachers and other members of staff, Kamarudeen said the students were ready to fight what he described as injustice against the institution.

Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, told one of our correspondents that he was not aware of any plan to return the schools to their former status.

MCIU inaugurates 2015 scholarship scheme

Delta State-based Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, has announced a scholarship scheme for students wishing to obtain qualifications in its faculties of Management and Social Sciences as well as the Natural and Applied Sciences for the 2015 / 2016 academic session.

In a statement, on Monday, the Registrar of the university, Andrew Okwudei, said, “There are 150 scholarships and bursaries available, and every successful applicant can receive up to N1m for his or her tuition at MCIU for the duration of the study.”
According to him, the scholarships are part of the new MCIU Scholars Scholarship programmes that will benefit students entering university in 2015/2016.
He said eligible students must be at least 16 years of age and possess five credit “O” level passes which must include credit in English Language, Mathematics and a science subject in not more than two sittings

Reiterating that the MCIU is an institution dedicated to the alleviation of poverty, Okwudei said, “Students will be selected on the basis of a post-UTME, personal statement and interview.

“A good personal statement must not exceed 500 words and it will be a chance to tell us about yourself, why you think you deserve this scholarship and how you think it will help you serve yourself and society once you graduate.”

KADPOLY wins Enactus competition

Students of the Kaduna Polytechnic have emerged champions in the Enactus Nigeria 2015 championship.
By the victory, the school will represent Nigeria in the forthcoming Enactus World Cup 2015 scheduled for Johannesburg, South Africa later in the year.
The Nigerian representatives will meet contestants from 35 other countries in the fiesta.
In the final contest held in Lagos on Thursday, Kaduna Polytechnic students beat their counterparts from the University of Agriculture, Markurdi, Benue State to the second position. The third position went to the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti.
The contest, which centred on “Enabling progress”, allowed the participants to highlight the impact Enactus in different parts of the country.
The initiative challenges students to proffer solutions to the socio-economic challenges in their host communities and neighbourhood.
Meanwhile, the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr, James Entwistle, has called for a better collaboration between the government and the private sector.
Such a partnership, Entwistle said, would help to create a robust economy.
Entwistle stated this just as he urged Nigerian youths to help to promote good governance and accountability.
He spoke while addressing education stakeholders and participants at the competition.
The envoy said, “Young people are at the heart of many of today’s great strategic challenges, from rebuilding the global economy to combating violent extremism to building sustainable democracies.
“Nigerian youths need to be at the forefront to ensure that merit and substance are the deciding factors in electoral politics and that good governance becomes the clarion call of accountability.
“High standard of service and excellence in execution should be your watchword. I encourage you all to fully exploit your creative abilities and to dream big and forge ahead with these dreams for a better and brighter future.”
Hailing the organisers, the Enactus Nigeria, the envoy said the competition would help Nigerian students to channel their energies to creating community development projects.
The projects, he added, would enable the beneficiaries to use their ingenuity and talent to impact on society better.
According to him, the organisation has harnessed the talents of university students to explore and develop business acumen.
He urged them to continue to hone their business and entrepreneurial skills so that they do not end up being “government bureaucrats”

AAUA To Admit 4000 Out of 17,904 Post-UTME Candidates

The deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Prof. Oluyemisi Adebowale has disclosed that out of the 17,904 candidates that are participating in the post-UTME screening exercise of the institution only about 4000 students will be admitted.
While speaking on the general conduct of the screening exercise, she expressed satisfaction over the success recorded so far.
“So far, it has been a success story. The facilities and the technical know-how we have put in place are working perfectly. We have improved greatly on the previous exercise. Prior to this year’s exercise, results were delayed till after the whole exercise, leading to congestion and security challenges because many of the candidates would have to hang around.
“This time around, we organized the exercise in such a way that candidates receive their results daily. We close by 3:00pm every day, give some hours’ gap for candidates to return to their various homes. By 7:00pm, we release their scores and send to their phones via SMS.” She stated.
She warned admission seekers against patronizing fraudsters saying that admission into the school is strictly buy merit.
“At the end of the test, we will collate all the results and go to the drawing board to decide the cut-off mark. Any candidate whose score falls within the required mark is automatically admitted. Candidates don’t need to know anybody. Our admission at AAUA is still absolutely merit-driven.” She emphasized.

Department of State Security Agency to collect bio data of students across Nigeria

The Department of State Security (DSS) is perfecting plans to capture the bio data of students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria, Guardian reports.

This would be jointly implemented by the security agency and the authorities of institutions around the country.

New Director of the Kwara State Command of the DSS, Mr. Abdullahi Shinkafi, who made the disclosure yesterday said the University of Ilorin “a Centre of Excellence and one of the best universities in the country,” could be used as a model for the project when finally adopted.
“The Vice-Chancellor and his team have made the university what it is today. You are a fine gentleman and you are doing a good work," Shinkafi said during a visit to the Vice-Chancellor, of the University, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali.
"The DSS in Kwara State under my leadership would support you to do more and maintain the standard of peace and security on the campus,” he added.

The DSS Director also hailed the university's security structure, which he described as “excellent.” He decried the activities of those he called “fake students” and cult members and disclosed that the DSS was already putting some strategies in place to flush out such undesirable elements from higher educational institutions in the country.
Shinkafi said that DSS operatives are peacemakers, and advised the University management to document students’ bio data such as fingerprints to make security investigations easier and ensure better security for the students.
Besides, he canvassed regular checks and authentication of studentship to detect fake students, a development, he noted could be replicated across institutions in Nigeria if the Ilorin’s experiment, worked.
The Director also tasked the University management to take preventive measures against terrorism, while blaming unemployment and lack of responsibility for the rise of terrorism in the country. “I assure you that during my tenure here, I will assist you to be successful. My people and I would do our best,” he pledged.
Welcoming the new DSS Director to the institution and Kwara State, Ambali said that the university has a good relationship with the DSS. He praised the quality of the personnel of the DSS, saying, “It is the reason for our peaceful association.”
The Vice-Chancellor submitted that the DSS contributed to the level of peace and harmony the university is enjoying today, noting that officers and men of the service had helped to curtail the excesses of bad eggs among the students.
He said that the university keeps eye on the students, explaining that bad students are expelled to protect the good ones. According to Ambali, “We have had our tough times, but we are now enjoying peace.
We want to make this institution one of the best in the world. We are creating an atmosphere for our staff to enjoy their profession in the University.”

UDUSOK 2015/2016 Post-UTME Screening Date, Procedure Announced. This is to inform all candidates (UTME and DIRECT ENTRY) who chose the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUSOK), as their Most Preferred institution in 2015/2016 JAMB UTME, to register online for the admission screening exercise.
Eligibility
The UTME applicants must have scored 180 and above in the 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. Direct Entry candidates must have at least Lower Credit at Diploma and a minimum of six (6) points at NCE/IJMB.
However, Direct Entry applicants for Medicine, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing, Radiography and Law should not register for the screening.
Method of Application
a. Applicants are required to go on-line at http://putme.udusok.edu.ngand fill their details by supplying their Jamb Numbers;
b. Print the form that bears your Transaction ID (Invoice) that you will present at the Bank for payment;
c. Proceed to any branch of the designated banks to pay a non-refundable fee of two thousand naira (N2,000.00) only. (This is exclusive of the Transaction fees). The designated banks are:

iii. Skye Bank
iv. First Bank
Visit the same portal (http://putme.udusok.edu.ng) and log-in with your JAMB Number and the Transaction ID to print your Application Form.
