Rivers State Polytechnic NANS calls Wike a 'rascal' over 344 workers' sack, allege 'vengeful vendetta'

GovernorNyesom Wikehas been criticized over the sacking of 344 lecturers and other staff ofRivers State Polytechnic, Boni-Ogoni.
TheNational Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) condemned the action in a statement signed by its National President, ComradeTijani Usman.
According to Usman, the decision is an "administrative rascality" and “vengeful vendetta” that should be condemned.
"Nigerian students condemn in totality the action taken by the Rivers State governor as it lacks any moral and rational justification," Usman said.
"Sacking 344 lecturers and other staff of the institution in one fell swoop under the guise that their employment did not follow due process is a demonstration of administrative rascality.”
Usman added that Wike, being a former minister of state of education, should not have allowed political sentiments to affect his decisions in the sector.
“It is sad that rather than concentrate on providing dividends of democracy as promised, he is busy carrying out vengeful vendetta."
Wike had directed that the worker's appointments be terminated barely 20 days into office, alleging that the immediate past governor,Rotimi Amaechi, arbitrarily employed about 500 people without due process.
There were speculations that a further 13,200 teachers employed by the last government are at risk of being sacked.

In Sokoto... 16-yr-old student still missing 2 months after attack by hired thugs

A 16-year-old student ofSani Dingyadi Unity Secondary Schoolin Sokoto State,Abdulrahman Bala Altine, has been missing for two months.
Altine's father, MalamBala Altine Kasarawa, toldDaily Trustthat his son disappeared after an attack by thugs said to have been hired by the state’ chairman of theNigerian Union of Teachers(NUT),Chika Maidamma.
Kasarawa said Maidamma, who is also his neighbour, had sent the thugs to deal with his son who had quarelled with his [Maidamma] wife.
“His wife, Hajiya Rabi entered my house and beat up my son, Abdulrahman, in the presence of his mother," Kasarawa said.
"The incident caused his mother to collapse because she is hypertensive. It took us hours to revive her.
"As we were reviving her, Chika hired area boys who came looking for Abdulrahman in two vehicles and dangerous weapons, but by then, he had left the house.
He said his son has been missing since that incident.
"Since I did not know his whereabouts, I reported the matter to the police.
"The police invited and detained Chika, only to be released after agreeing to find my child within one week which has since elapsed.
"He was later invited by the police again and DSS and was let go after promising to look for the boy and bring him home."
But the matter took a new turn when the alleged assaulter arrested Kasarawa.
“On Sunday, May 17, Chika reported me to Bado office of the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps who came and arrested me at around 2:17am," he added.
"He later reported me to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 10, accusing me of aiding my son to escape arrest after attacking his pregnant wife at his residence.
"This is why I resorted to the press, to help me seek justice over the matter."
Maidamma has however denied the allegations.
He said the 'missing' student was the one who hired area boys to unleash terror on his pregnant wife.
“We were at the hospital till 2am on that fateful day because she was bleeding as a result of the attack,” he said.
"And we were advised to come back every week by the doctor.
The NUT chairman however corroborated Kasarawa's claim that he was initially arrested.
He however said he had delayed taking action over the matter with the hope that the student would be found and handed over to the police.

Strike lecturers at theTaraba State Universitywill continue their three-month long action until the state government fulfils its promises to them. The chapter Chairman of theAcademic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU), Dr Reuben Jonathan, who spoke toDaily Trust, said the need for proper funding of the university by the state government led to the industrial action. "University is capital intensive and now that the state has delved into, she has to fund it," he said. Jonathan noted that the state government had refused to pay lecturers five months strike during the infamous national ASUU strike in 2013. The union leader said after two change in government in the state, the union had only received N100 million of the nearly N500 million owed it. "Apart from the N100 million given by the state government so far, nothing has come to the university from the state, which is too bad." He added that the university would not have existed but for the projects executed under theTertiary Education Trust Fund(TETFund)

PresidentMuhammadu Buhari's government must take the task of revitalizing public education as important as the much talked about anti-corruption war if the promised change is to be achieved.
The Vice-Chancellor ofKwara State University(KWASU), Malete, ProfessorAbdulrasheed Na’Allah, said this recently in aDaily Trustinterview.
Na’Allah said the new government needs to take public education as seriously as corruption.
"Public education must be revitalized," he said.
"I know it is important this government look into corruption but I have not heard a lot said about public education and that is extremely important and it has to be a policy focus, the government should declare war or emergency and mobilize from local governments to states to revitalize public education in Nigeria."
The Vice Chancellor noted that the terrible state of many schools has led to many parents opting for private schools because "people have no more confidence in public schools and I think this government must take this as one area of major change for Nigeria.
"If public education is revitalized and parents begin to have confidence again in public education, a lot of changes will come to this nation."
He concluded that bringing back the glory days of education would go a long way in actualizing the government’s change drive

How Seven Youths Gang-rape Trader In Alaba Market

Two of them, ─ Abeeb Busari, 22, and 18-year-old Lawal Gbolahan ─ who were nabbed and arraigned in court by the police, have been remanded in custody by an Apapa Magistrate’s Court.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the police had launched a manhunt for the other fleeing offenders while the arrested suspects have owned up to the crime.

The victim, 24-year-old Bola (pseudonym), sells fairly-used clothes in the area.

It was gathered that the woman was hawking her wares around 4.30pm on May 27, when Busari, who works as a bricklayer on a construction project at the market, summoned her under the pretext of buying a jacket for which he agreed to pay N500.

He reportedly told her to follow him to a room in a plaza at the market ─ where he had lodged ─ to collect the money for the item.

Busari, it was learnt, was acting on the order of one of his accomplices, identified as Tunde, who reportedly orchestrated the crime to punish the victim for an undisclosed offence.

Our correspondent was told that on getting to the room, Busari shut the door and ordered the woman to sit, while Gbolahan and the other five fugitives jumped down from the roof, where they had hidden. They allegedly took turns To Molest her.

After about 30 minutes, a welder, Idris Lasisi, who reportedly saw the trader and Busari, traced her to the plaza and barged into the room.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects threatened him with a dagger when he attempted to raise the alarm.

Busari, who hails from the Ikorodu area of the state, confessed to the crime, saying it was Tunde, one of the fleeing suspects, who planned the act.

He said, “I was in the market on the fateful day when I saw Bola hawking fairly-used clothes.

I deceived her that I wanted to buy a jacket and asked her to follow me upstairs to collect the money.

As soon as she entered my room, I locked the door. Before then, my friend, Tunde had made arrangement with other five boys to hide inside the ceiling.

“They jumped down as soon as she came in. It was Tunde, who tore her panties and threatened her with a dagger. Idris (Lasisi) forcefully entered while the act was on, but Tunde threatened to stab him if he shouted. When we were done, I gave her N500 for the jacket, but Tunde collected it from her.”

In his statement, Gbolahan, who is also a bricklayer, said he was in his house, located around the market when Tunde invited him, adding that he was forced To Molest the woman.

He said, “I was inside my own room, when Tunde called me into the room, where Bola was kept. He told me she had offended him once and he wanted to deal with her. He forced me to join in gang-raping her.”

It was gathered that Lasisi eventually managed to sneak out of the room while the men were immersed in the act and alerted traders at the market, leading to Busari and Gbolahan’s arrest by policemen from the Layeni Police Station.

They were subsequently arraigned before a chief magistrate, Mr. P.A. Adekomaya, on two counts of rape.

The charges read, “That you, Abeeb Busari, Lawal Gbolahan, and five others now at large, on May 27, 2015, at about 4.30pm, at Alaba New Market, Lagos, in the Apapa Magisterial District, did conspire to commit felony to wit: rape.

“That you and five others at large on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district did unlawfully and forcefully have the carnal knowledge of one Bola.”

The defendants pleaded guilty to the charges, which according to a police prosecutor, ASP Olusoji Ojaokomo, contravene sections 409 and 348 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

Adekomaya ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison and adjourned the case till July 28, 2015.

UNIJOS is 9th preferred nationwide, 3rd in Northern Nigeria — VC

TheUniversity of Jos(UNIJOS), Plateau State, is one of the most preferred universities in Nigeria despite the insurgency in parts of the North.
UNIJOS Vice-Chancellor, Prof.Hayward Mufuyai, said that the university is experiencing peace and tranquillity, hence the fact that admission figures into the institution has not dropped.
Mufuyai stated this when he led a delegation to the palace of the Olowo of Owoland, ObaVictor Olateru Olagbegi, the new Chancellor of the university.
The Voce Chancellor noted that UNIJOS is the 9th most preferred in the whole country, bettered only by two institutions in the entire northern region.
“By JAMB’s statistics of the last admission, University of Jos is the ninth on the list of most preferred institution in the entire federation, and in the northern part of the country, we are the third most preferred after the University of Ilorin and the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria,” Mafuyai said.
He added that, even though the institution faces funding challenges, a lot is hoped for in the coming days.
“We have very high expectations for better days ahead due to the calibre of people who form the institution’s Council because we know that the experiences they have from the public and private sector will bear positively on the governance of the institution for best practices so that we can deliver more for the country."
Olagbegi was one time the Chancellor on theUniversity of Benin(UNIBEN).
The Pro-Chancellor of the university, ChiefDon Etiebet, was also part of the delegation.

Kaduna has 'no money for new university'— El-Rufa’i

GovernorNasiru El-Rufa’iof Kaduna State had said the government has shelved its plans to establish a new university in Kafanchan because of paucity of funds.

El-Rufa’i made this known when officials of theTertiary Education Trust Fund(TETFund) paid him a courtesy visit on Tuesday.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports El-Rufa’i said the reason for suspending the second state university initiated by the immediate past Governor,Mukhtar Yero, was for lack of funds.

University Education Student exchange programmes give cultural exposure — FUTA VC

Vice Chancellor of the Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe (Daily Trust)
A human rights lawyer,Maxwell Opara, has dragged theNational Open University of Nigeria(NOUN) before a Federal High Court over its law degree programmes.
Opara, in a writ of summons filed by his counsel, Nnenna Opara, argued that the law programme of NOUN has not conformed to the minimum standards of law education as set by the Nigerian Law School (NLS)'s Council of Legal Education (CLE) which stipulates that "law must be studied on a full time basis and not on part time or by correspondence."
According to him, NOUN "deceived and lured innocent Nigerians to believe that NOUN was duly accredited to offer law."
Opara avers that he sponsored two persons to take the NOUN programme before realizing that that the institution has no approval to offer law, with the Nigerian Law School rejecting thousands of the programme's graduates with LL.B degrees.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed ordered the applicant to serve hearing notices on NOUN and the NUC.
The matter was adjourned to October 1 for hearing.

DELSU Student Commits Suicide After Being Jilted By Her Fiance

The parents and family of a 26-year-old microbiology student from the Delta State University identified simply as Evelyn Mogekwu, have been in mourning when the lady allegedly committed suicide because her fiancé dumped her.
9ja School gist gathered that the 26-year-old microbiology allegedly committed suicide after being jilted by her fiance.
An impeccable source who do not want her name in print disclosed to our correspondent that Evelyn Mogekwu was shattered after she received a phone called from the man she had dated for over seven years and had hoped to get married that their relationship over for good.
Sources said the girl was in high spirits in her hostel but her mood changed dramatically and she became dejected after her fiance called her on phone to declare that their relationship over.

Few minutes later, her roommate who sensed something terrible was going on, raced into the room and found her lying lifeless on ground. She raised an alarm that attracted other students to the room, but before help came the girl’s way, she had given up the ghost.
Confirming her death, some senior police officers at the Abraka Police Division, who did not want their names in the print, said they recovered particles of drugs on the ground beside the deceased, adding that her roommate is currently being detained for interrogation. May her soul rest in peace.

Love Expo? NECO Warns Candidates Against Online Scam Artistes

People claiming to have theNational Examination Council (NECO) LIVE questions and answersuse social media and other platforms to deceive unsuspecting victims, luring them into parting with sums of money under the guise of providing them questions and answers before the commencement of each paper during the examinations. These scam artists also sometimes claim to upgrade scores after the exam.To ensure that you never fall victim to a scam, make knowledge and self-vigilance your first line.

The National Examination Council (NECO) has warned candidates sitting for its examinations against patronising people who post requests online, asking them to pay and get leaked answers.

NECO’s Abuja Liaison Officer, Mr Abdul Mustapha, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja, said such online postings were from scammers.
NAN reports that NECO organises Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE) and National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE).

According to Mustapha, such fraudsters cheat unsuspecting candidates, adding that whoever patronises is doing that at his/her peril.

“They have no access to our answers; they cannot get our answers; they will pretend as if they have seen the answers but it is all lies.

“Our questions appear in four types – types A to D ; but what they present to unsuspecting candidates is just manufactured answers without the type specifications.

“Again, our questions stop at 50, but theirs continue from 51 to 100; that is another proof that they have not seen our answers.

“In one occasion, in our biology exam, the specimen was an ear but they drew flower in their own fake answers,’’ he said.
He said that candidates had always shy from reporting to NECO when they fell prey to scammers, ‘’knowing that they tried to cheat but ended up being cheated.’’

The 2015 NECO SSCE internal examination which commenced on May 21 will end on July 10. (NAN)
Anyone who receives these false solicitations is strongly advised to either disregard them in their own best interest, or report to the nearest law enforcement agency.

Incredible This man graduated with a 4.59 G.P.A

Kara Ufuoma, 25, graduated with a first class from the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Benin, Edo State, having had a 4.59 CGPA.
24/7 Live - Subscribe to the Pulse Newsletter!Subscribe
Its enough work graduating with a First Class, but graduating with a 4.59 GPA is just incredible.
Kara Ufuoma, 25, graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Benin, Edo State, having had a 4.59 GPA, Punch reports.
He spoke in an interview about how he managed to pull off the achievement.
What did you do differently to have a first class?

To do well in school, one needs to devote time to study. In my case, I ensured I was punctual in attending lectures and I studied several textbooks to help consolidate my understanding of the courses. I surrounded myself mostly with people who took their academics seriously. I was also constantly motivating myself whenever I was overwhelmed by the rigours of schoolwork. There is really no scale to measure how easy or difficult it is to have a first class, but I can emphatically say that it requires hard work, discipline, focus and a desire to be excellent. Initially, it was just a wish, but with time, the desire grew and I found out it wasn’t an impossible task. There were stories about how difficult it could be to get a first class and how students who merited it had been victimised by sadistic lecturers, but that didn’t affect my resolve, rather, it galvanised me to work harder. However, I wouldn’t rule out God’s grace because I know God has been gracious to me.

Many people would think that having first class in Chemical Engineering is not easy. How true is it?
I will not completely shy away from the fact that people see engineering courses as difficult, but inasmuch as I don’t consider engineering to be difficult, it does require dedication, hard work, and I think passion for the chosen branch of engineering one chooses to dive into could guarantee good success. If you have a passion for whatever you engage in, the probability of success will be high. I enjoyed studying chemical engineering and gained deep understanding of the underlying principles, thus it culminated in my graduating with a first class. Nonetheless, I have always excelled academically right from my elementary school through secondary school days. I had the best result in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination in my school with six A1’s and two B2’s and I had a good UTME score when I wrote the exam. But when I got to school, I still studied hard.

What attracted you to the course?
Studying Chemical Engineering was not an accident, I was completely in love with chemistry and very proficient in mathematics. So, I thought of a field of study that didn’t only incorporate these subjects, but one that was also protean in its scope of application. If I didn’t study chemical engineering, I most likely would have studied chemistry or maybe biochemistry. I wasn’t really keen on being an engineer as a child because I grew up in an environment filled with military doctors, so back then every kid around the block wanted to be a doctor. When the time finally presented itself to make a career choice, I realised I had a predilection for the engineering field, chemical engineering specifically.
What is the course about for those contemplating a career in the field?
Chemical Engineering is a branch of Engineering that applies the principles of mathematics, physics, chemistry and economics to convert less valuable materials (raw materials) to a more valuable form (products). This can be observed in the refining process, where crude oil is converted to more valuable end products such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel etc. via the process of distillation and sometimes catalytic cracking. It should be noted that this field is not limited to the conversion process, but also subsumes optimisation to ensure that economic value is created at the end of the day. Chemical engineers are involved in the design of plant and specification of equipment to carry out the various processes and may also be involved in the daily operations of such plants.
What are the applications in a country like Nigeria?

Chemical engineering has a lot of applications in Nigeria, ranging from the oil and gas industry; where chemical engineers function as plant operators, reservoir engineers etc., to pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, cement, petrochemicals, textile, rubber and ceramics, soap manufacturing and many other related industries. It’s a course that finds application in a number of industries, even in Nigeria.

How easy was it for you to secure an admission?

I never had difficulty securing admission, but I made a wrong choice when I wrote my first Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. I was deceived into believing that Chemical Engineering was a provincial field and so I was persuaded to apply for Medicine. I never had the zeal or conviction to study Medicine, so I had to wait until the next academic session to write another UTME and apply for Chemical Engineering. Today, I’m glad I made that choice.
Did you have any challenge as a first year student?

I performed well in my first year but I had a challenge in my second year because I wasn’t reading until a day or two days to my exam. That was my undoing. My GPA suffered for that recklessness and that was when I had my lowest GPA. I had 3.92 whereas I had 4.67 in 100 Level. When I saw my 300 Level result and my GPA rose to 4.71 after an abysmal 200 Level performance, that was my happiest moment as an undergraduate. In 400 Level, I had 4.8 and 500 Level, I had 4.65.
Some students give up once they have a poor performance in their first year. How were you able to address it?

Even though I think I am naturally smart, I had to devote more time to studying. Sometimes I had to study for very long hours. Therefore, I feel mine was a blend of natural intelligence and hard work. I tried to stay motivated. Sometimes I read stories of people who attained great feats academically and such stories spurred me to work harder.

What was your typical day like?
My life in school was like a triangle. I would go for lectures, went back to my room, and on fellowship days I would go to church. On other days, I stayed in my room. I ensured I rested well everyday. I was sleeping for at least six hours on the average, but there were days I didn’t sleep at all probably due to lots of assignments that I had to turn in at the same time. I didn’t really have a defined pattern of studying, I could study for as much as eight hours and sometimes I would struggle to read for one hour. I used to read at night right from my secondary school days, but at the tail end of my days in the university, I utilised my day time adequately and slept for the most part of the night. Exam periods were usually very hectic periods for me because during this period, I spent most of the time sleeping or reading. Sometimes I turned off my phones to avoid unwanted distraction, but exams never hindered me from attending fellowship. I rarely used the library. Throughout my days in school as an undergraduate, I’m not sure I used the library up to 20 times because I had most of the resources I needed to study. It was either I procured the hard copies or e-books.

How did you manage gestures from females?
I think I had a way of circumventing events that will propagate such gestures, but I had very good female friends. However, the girls in my class once accused me that I was only relating with ladies that I perceived to be intelligent, but that wasn’t true.

How social were you?
I wasn’t the gregarious type, so I hardly participated in social events, but I attended a few dinners. There were times that all I wanted was to just enjoy the solitude of my room, so at such times, I would rather stay in my room and read. At my leisure, I usually played video games or be in company of friends. I could take a stroll too.
Are you worried by the unemployment crisis in Nigeria?

The level of unemployment in the country right now is indeed high, but I do not bother myself with it. I try to channel my thoughts and energy into being the best I can be and acquiring as much knowledge and skill, which in turn will make me more valuable to prospecting employers.
What are your aspirations in life?
I want to pursue a PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Austin, Texas, specialising in biotechnology and its application in renewable and sustainable energy development.

Thereafter, I hope to start up a company in Nigeria that will utilise the knowledge acquired from my research to produce clean and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. IIf I can achieve this, I will be helping in a way to solve the unemployment crisis in the country.

What is your advice to students?
I advise students to study hard, associate with students who are focused, and they should invest in books. They should also ensure they go through their entire coursework for the semester at least once before the commencement of exams. It will also help if they can find someone doing very well in their department to play the role of a mentor to them.

Before the arrival of a police team from nearby Divisions like Okpoko, Awada and Obosi, the students had succeeded in causing total blockade of the road, chanting solidarity songs as they made the bonfire.
According to the source, trouble started in the school on Wednesday morning when some graduates of the school who had gone to Petroleum Training Institute, PTI, Effurun, Warri, Delta State, to further their studies were refused admission.

They were also allegedly chased out by some security agents attached to the school over the excuse that NMTI diploma certificate was not duly recognized by PTI, also a Federal Government-owned institution.

The source said the aggrieved students allegedly communicated their situation to some of their colleagues still studying at NMTI, telling them that they were wasting their time as the Diploma Certificate from NMTI, which is under the Federal Ministry of Mines and Power, was not recognized outside the school on graduation.

The situation was said to have angered the students who now organized themselves and delegated the Students’ Union Executive and some of the best minds to approach the Director of the school, Mr. I. I. Okonkwo, to know his reaction.

On reaching the Director’s office on Wednesday, the students delegation were allegedly turned back by the school boss and the students immediately went on rampage.

It was gathered that feeling extremely humiliated by the director’s uncompromising behaviour, the students accused him of not showing enough sympathy towards their plights and as early as 8a.m. yesterday, they mobilized themselves and vandalized some of the school property, including electronic gadgets and computer sets.

On realizing the magnitude of the protest, the director allegedly ran into his office with some members of senior staff of the school in a bid to escape the students’ wrath.

Rivers State Polytechnic "Our Governor should not do this to us" - Rivers' sacked workers

The employees of the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori sacked by the state government are appealing to well meaning people of the state to lobby the state government on to reverse the sack.

The State Government had on Monday announced the cancellation of the polytechnic workers appointment. Those affected are academic and non-academic staff, who were recently employed by the Rotimi Amaechi administration.

Speaking on behalf of the over 300 affected, Jekey Lekue, Grace Ikue and Basil Ujobolo urged the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, not to go back on his promise during his inauguration to give hope to the people.

Some of the retrenched workers lamented that they had been searching for job for the past five years before they were eventually employed at the state polytechnic, according to sources in Port Harcourt.
They also stated that some of them had to resign from their former place of work after they received their appointment letters from the authorities of the State Polytechnic, Bori, Khana Local Government Area.
Explaining that they went through a painstaking process before they were employed, the sacked workers recalled that they had supervised the last examination in the school before the announcement that their employment had been cancelled.
“We are calling on well meaning Rivers people to do justice to this issue. We beg Rivers people to step in. Governor Nyesom Wike gave the state hope on May 29, 2015. We have already been captured in the data base of the state. Our governor should not do this to us,” they further appealed.
In another development, the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has disbanded the Rivers State Road Traffic Management Agency known as TIMARiV.
Reacting to the sacking of over 300 RIVPOLY workers, the Special Adviser on Media to the State Governor, Sir Opunabo Inko-Tariah, stated their appointment was marred by irregularities.
Inko-Tariah said, “The appointment of the staff were marred with irregularities. Such an appointment had to be terminated to look into the whole issue holistically.
“The sacking was premised on irregularities. So many procedural obligations were breached and as a result, the exercise was deprived of due process.”
Speaking on the Rector of the polytechnic, Dr Obiando Elechi Amadi, who was sent on a compulsory leave, Inko-Tariah pointed out that it was as a result of a case of official misconduct on the rector’s part.
On the disbandment of the state traffic management agency, the governor’s aide specifically said that some of the officials of TIMARIV were making illegal seizure of vehicles in order to extort money from innocent citizens.
According to him, “Many of those guys were making illegal and embarrassing seizure of vehicles on the roads and this is becoming an eyesore. Let us leave politics aside; it is a known fact all over the state that TIMARIV had constituted itself into a public nuisance.
“The action of its staff had, in most cases, brought River State into disrepute. What they do in most cases is illegal. They are not supposed to struggle for the steering with the driver of a vehicle, but this is what they often do.
“The state government can no longer cope with the excesses of this TIMARIV staff. It was on that premises that the governor decided that it should be disbanded.
“Governor Nyesom Wike also instructed that all seized vehicles should be released with immediate effect. He further instructed that nobody should pay a kobo to TIMARIV.
“If anybody should be refused or deprived of the retrieval of his/her vehicle, such a person should report to the nearest police station and the TIMARIV staff in question will be dealt with,” Inko-Tariah added.

4 Students Of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) To Represent Africa In America

Four students of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) have put the five-year old university on the world map again by qualifying for the finals of this year’s edition of Imagine Cup organized Microsoft Incorporation

The race commenced with the competition among higher institutions in Nigeria which ABUAD won to qualify for the African Zone (Semi-finals) where it defeated higher institutions in other African countries including Burkina Faso, South Africa, Uganda, Egypt, Angola, Algeria and Morocco as well as Tunisia to qualify for the Worldfinals.
This feat is predicated on the quartet’s invention of Asthmavisor, a device for a more effective and efficient way of managing Asthma, particularly among children.
For this rare invention, the students made up of three Computer Science students and one Mechanical Engineering student will be representing Nigeria and Africa at the 33-nation finals of this year’s edition of Imagine Cup slated for July 31, 2015 at the Microsoft Headquarters in Seattle, United States of America.
The foursome of Adeyemo Oluwaseun Kayode, Raymond Obinaju, Sobola Timilehin David, and Ahwin Kevin with a joint passion for saving lives, has continually been seeking to leverage on technology to make health care more efficient, accessible and reliable particularly as it affects the rural dwellers.
Imagine Cup is the most prestigious global student technology program and competition that provides opportunities for students across all disciplines to team up and use their creativity, passion and knowledge of technology to create applications, games and integrates solutions that can change the way we live, work and play.
This is coming nine months after Mr. Emmanuel Adegbite, a 300 Level Student in the College of Medicine and Health Sciences of the university wrote a thoroughly well- researched scientific paper on the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) that recently ravaged and traumatized the country last year.
Titled “Therapeutic Measures against the Current Virulent Endemicity of Ebola Virus”, Adegbite’s paper was published by the Nigerian-based International Science Journal Publication in the October edition of the Science Journal of Medicine and Clinical Trials.
Christened Team Lifewatch, the ABUAD students qualified for the finals after successfully identifying a major (health) problem and proffering a novel solution using available technology, scaling the preliminaries by defeating other contestants, including Team Paradigm, the 2014 Image Cup Winner and by defeating nine other countries (in the African Zone) at the semi-finals to coast home to the finals.
The Team Lifewatch presentation (AsthmaVisor Solution) consists of a Mobile Application operating alongside a wearable device, which monitors and supervises asthmatic patients’ health status, ensuring that they stay safe and well informed of their environments. It is a solution geared towards a more cost-effective and efficient way of supervising asthmatic patients, especially children. AsthmaVisor would be used around the globe in all communities (rural and urban) where there are adults and children alike who suffer from this disease.
The solution will help patients to be more conscious of their environment and will provide a reminder of what their physician has advised them to avoid. The software also provides an automatic alert, which is triggered by change in environmental condition as detected by the sensors in the wearable. AsthmaVisor further helps the patient alert a selected list of emergency contacts in case he or she is not able to handle an attack.
Some of the benefits AsthmaVisor to Asthma patient include Environmental awareness to situations that could trigger an asthma attack, provision of helpful health tips that could prolong the life of the patients and crucial supervisory role-playing and monitoring as well as creating avenue for patients to track their attacks and log crucial information.
