Goodbye Goodluck Jonathan Nigerian student calls GEJ a “violence free and selfless leader” in stirring open letter

A Nigerian student from Delta State,Arerebo Salaco Yerinmene Peter'sJr, has written an open letter to President Goodluck Jonathan whom he called a “violence free and selfless leader”.
In his letter sent toStudent Pulse, Yerinmene, a beneficiary of the Nigerian Seafarers Development scholarship program initiated by Jonathan, thanked him for his selfless contribution to Nigeria.
“Mr. President As your tenure as the president Federal Republic of Nigeria has come to a close end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your hard and commitment in building a strong, prosperous and a United Nigeria although is crystal clear that you face a lot of distraction (sentiments, criticism and security challenges) intentionally cause by people that doesn't want the betterment of Nigeria, who want political leadership for selfish and self-promotional reasons,” the letter read.
He went further to commend Jonathan for allowing a “free and fair” election” and conceding defeat after losing the 2015 Presidential elections toMuhammadu Buhariwho would be sworn in tomorrow.
“Power ends, but your legacy will not end regardless of what it is.
“You might will continue to go higher in history as the first President from the Niger Delta region (South-South) that rebrands democracy in the country; you will surely be remembered for generations to come.”

Dear President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCON)
By way of introduction, I am Comr. Arerebo Salaco Yerinmene Peter's Jr, a bonafide son of Ijaw Nation (Niger Deltan), from Ayakoromo and Ogodobiri town, Burutu and Bomadi local government area in Delta State and above all am a beneficiary in one of your astounding scholarship program under the management of Dr. Patrick Akpobolekemi Ziakede. I am writing to you from the depths of my heart because how much I wanted to, I was not able to express these to you in person (one-on-one).
Mr. President As your tenure as the president Federal Republic of Nigeria has come to a close end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your hard and commitment in building a strong, prosperous and a United Nigeria although is crystal clear that you face a lot of distraction (sentiments, criticism and security challenges) intentionally cause by people that doesn't want the betterment of Nigeria, who want political leadership for selfish and self-promotional reasons. Mr. President, have these! Indeed, you have epitomized these qualities never wavering no matter how vicious and hurtful the political and personal attacks have been. No doubt, your faith guided you and you let it!
Leaders the world over think about two paramount things: the PRIMACY of the citizens’ needs and the LEGACY they leave behind long after they have gone. It seems, Mr. President, you think more about the two mentioned above and less about staying in power because you make it loud and clear to all Nigerians that "The blood of one Nigerian is far worth than your political ambition. There is one thing you have to remember as you disengage as the president, come May 29th and on: Time will come when you’ll be needed in the world either by political necessity, biological, peaceful necessity and physiological necessity. Power ends, but your legacy will not end regardless of what it is. You might will continue to go higher in history as the first President from the Niger Delta region (South-South) that rebrands democracy in the country; you will surely be remember for generations to come. The onus is on you!
Mr. President , the recent presidential election that you lost shows that you are a man of your word, a true and transparent democrat, you deserve international recognition as a peace loving man, a man to be called world leader and legend of our time. Thank you very much for the free and fair election you delivered, for accepting the defeat and for congratulating your successor GMB, it shows and prove to me that you are not biased in politics, peace loving, violence free and selfless leader, for this, history will be very kind to you and you will continue to be remembered by the new generational leaders as a true democrat, you have won the heart of all Nigerians’.  
Mr. President you take a step that will be used as an instrument to tackle violence, you have surprise the entire world with your bold sportsmanship. I assure you that as a new generation upcoming leader I will surely copy your good leadership step and you will forever remain in my heart and as a president you have proved to me that politics is not a ‘do or die’ affair.
Mr. President I haven't said this, you are far Commendable for the Nigerian Seafarers Development scholarship program, the continuation of Presidential amnesty scholarship program and others. It's has help to expand the growth of human capacity building in the country, its affect mostly the youths and in two to three years’ time Nigeria will be boastful about indigenous seafarers which is a plus to the maritime sector.
It's my very great pleasure to thank you for your dedication and the great job you have accomplished in your five (5) year term as president of Nigeria and wish you all the very best in your future endeavours and we look forward to your on-going involvement in Building Nigeria as a better nation.
In short, Mr. President, you have warmed and inspired me how to become a good leader and I bid you farewell as my President with a sense of relief for you that you can take a well-deserved break from the helm of our planet, but a tinge of sadness, too, that I will be losing your steady hand and noble, purity of vision as the leader of the free.

Gov. Aregbesola Finally Sacks Osun University VC

The vice chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), has been sacked by the state government for alleged financial mismanagement.
The appointments of Professor Bashir Okesina, and two other principal officers of the state institution have henceforth been terminated by the governing body of UNIOSUN.

The sack of the top three principal officers, according to Vanguard, follows a visit by a panel set-up by Governor Rauf Aregbesola, to investigate alleged financial mismanagement by the officers
Reacting to the sack, the UNIOSUN chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has faulted the decision of the institution’s governing body on the grounds that, it violated the principle of fairness.

The union maintained that, the institution was acting as a judge in their own case by arriving at a decision before the findings by the panel constituted by the governor were submitted.

UNIABUJAVC MAKES CASE FOR AGRICULTURE

The Vice Chancellor of University of Abuja, Prof. Michael Adikwu has said agriculture should be the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy.
The VC said Nigeria started having hitches in the economy when it veered off to face other sectors.
Speaking in Abuja at the signing of memorandum of understanding between the varsity and a firm, Agricular Services limited on the development of UniAbuja Agricultural City (Green Town), he said Nigeria could do well in agriculture if properly managed.
He said the proposed Agricultural City would be pursued with vigor because of its prospect of turning around the lives of the varsity community.
The Chief Executive Officer of Agricular Services limited, Mr. Chigozie Oguine said the proposed city was to be seated in about 2000 hectares of land within the vast arable land of the varsity community to cover agriculture, municipality, hospitality and electricity development.
He said the project would also increase the financial capacity of the varsity stakeholders who would be involved in the production activities.

NYSC Corps member donates 50 wheel chairs in Abuja

A member of theNational Youth Service Corps(NYSC), has donated 50 simplified wheelchairs to physically challenged persons inKuchingorocommunity, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Omanudho Kennedy, a Batch ‘B’ serving corps member, made the donation as part of his personal project under the Community Development Service programmes of the NYSC scheme,Daily Trustreports.
Kennedy said the project was borne out of love and compassion he developed as a medical student during one of the outreaches he participated in a community in Bayelsa State.
NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen.Johnson Olawunmi, at the presentation ceremony described the gesture as another milestone in the scheme’s social empowerment strategy, aimed at enhancing the living standard of members of the host communities.
Represented by the Director, Community Development Service and Special Projects,Bose Okakwu, Olawunmi said the CDS project is highly commendable and should be emulated by other corps members.

Cultist Attack MAPOLY student shot in the head 3 days after sister’s wedding dies in hospital

A student of theMoshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, shot in the head by suspected cultists in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, has died.
Agoro Omokoleola, was reportedly lured out of his home and shot in the head around 12 noon on Tuesday, May 26.
Reports say Omokoleola had left his family home after a phone call which is suspected to have been from his would be killers.
He was then shot in the head and left to die.
The assailants took his phone, apparently to prevent investigators from tracking them.

Passers-by found him still breathing and informed his parents who rushed him to theOlabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital(OOUTH), Sagamu.
He died while receiving treatment.
Acceding to online reports, the deceased was in Ijebu Ode to attend his sister's wedding, which took place three days before his death, and was set to return to school.

UNILORIN Wins 2015 Nigerian Universities’ Challenge

Students of the University of Ilorin last Tuesday (May 19, 2015) clinched the first position at the finals of the 2015 All Nigerian Universities’ Challenge (ANUC), tagged “Better by Far Challenge”, defeating six other tertiary institutions in the country. Osun State University, Osogbo placed second, while the Kwara State University, Malete, won the third position.
The competition, hosted by the University of Ilorin, drew participants from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; the Federal University, Lokoja; the University of Jos; the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete; Osun State University, Osogbo and Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba.
In the “Best of Brains” category, Adekunle Ajasin University and Ahmadu Bello University tied for the first place position with 450 points each, while the Federal University, Lokoja, placed third with 200 points and the University of Jos placed fourth with 150 points.
While declaring the competition open earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. (Mrs.) N. Y. S. Ijaiya, noted that the competition was one way of promoting academic excellence.
Citing examples of influential leaders like Barack Obama, Tony Blair and Bill Clinton, who, she noted, began their careers as political leaders right from the University and even at lower levels, Prof. Ijaiya told the audience that, “through debates like this, we are promoting the power of oratory and we know that this is not a universal gift, some are more gifted than others and when we bring students like these together, it provides an opportunity to showcase their talents.”
Prof. Ijaiya further explained that the competition offers a platform for the training of present and future leaders, by promoting critical thinking, which allows young people to proffer solutions to the myriad of challenges confronting the immediate community and the world at large, saying that “this kind of programme will allow us to identify such talents in our younger ones, which they can promote and in future will be able to contribute politically, economically and essentially to the development of Nigeria.”
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. R.O. Arise, said that the All Nigerian Universities’ Challenge provides a platform for the university students in Nigeria to be informed in contemporary national, continental and global challenges through robust engagement in intellectual competition. He appreciated the management of the University of Ilorin under the leadership of Prof. Ambali for supporting the University Quiz and Games Committee and for the sponsorship of the dinner and award ceremony for the programme.
Dr. Arise noted that the University boosts intellectual competition among the students by developing quiz and debates clubs, adding that the participation of club members in various debates and quiz competitions has added more laurels to the dignity of the University.
At the close of the competition on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, the Vice-Chancellor, represented by the Dean, Students Affairs, Prof. A. O. Omotesho, in an interview, described the event as a very interesting one, which would have been a lot more exciting if more universities had participated.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Osun State University, Dr Anthony Kola-Olusanya, in his remarks, commended the authorities of the University of Ilorin, saying “What the University of Ilorin has proved is that, beyond sports, students can also be engaged to do other things. This is an intellectual competition that makes our students to read more than just thinking about physical activity.”
On his part, the Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, University of Jos, Dr. A. Damey, described the competition as “an eye opener”.
At the end of the competition, the students were presented with certificates of participation. The team Unilorin was presented with a plaque and three PC tablets; Osun State University received a plaque and two PC tablets while Kwara State University was presented with a plaque and one PC tablet for their efforts.

Murder In Niger Teenage thugs rob 21-yr-old student, stab him to death for asking for sim cards

Unidentified teenage thugs have stabbed a 21-year-old student to death in Sango area of Minna, Niger State.
Mohammed Abubakar Nagenuwas attacked by knife-wielding thugs around 6pm on Friday.
After handing over his phone, Nagenu begged for his sim cards, drawing his assailants’ ire.
The thugs then stabbed him multiple times until he died.
An uncle to the deceased, MallamMohammed Ndagi, Nagenu had only recently arrived Minna to process his admission into one of the tertiary institutions.
He said the thugs have been terrorizing the area.
“They have been terrorizing people," he said.
"They take advantage of the students of the State College of Education, Minna."
He believes his nephew was targeted because they knew he was a stranger in the community.
"They will not do it to the people they know.
"My nephew just came from the village recently they did not know him; that is why they decided to attack him."
He said the case has been reported at Chanchaga police division and three of the suspected murderers have been taken into custody.

Justice Served University ordered to pay student N2.1m compensation for study delay

TheUniversity of Amsterdam(UvA) has been ordered to pay N2.1 million (10,000 euros) in compensation to a student of the institution for delaying his studies.
According to AT5 the unnamed student suffered a 6-month study delay because he was unable to register for a compulsory course.
His failure to register the course was due to a technical fault on the last day of registration.
The student reportedly complained to authorities but the university told him he could no longer register prompting his court action.
UvA's argument that the student should have gone to the study adviser to find a solution was dismissed by the Judge.
The court ruled that the university acted unlawfully and awarded the student a compensation of almost 10 thousand euros because the university’s actions led to a study delay.

Delta State University 'Madman' rapes 22-yr-old student at ATM stand

A mentally unstable man has sexually assaulted a 22-year-old female student of theDelta State University(DELSU) at an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) stand.
Reports say the incident happened in Abraka at the weekend.
The alleged rapist had abducted his victim, identified asEjiro, as she tried to withdraw money from the ATM.
He then dragged her into the bush where he managed to remove her skirt before passers-by heard her cries.
Student Pulsegathered that the suspect held on to the student event as rescuers beat him off with sticks.
The victim's elder brother toldLeadershipthat it was after the alleged rapist was taken to the police station that his mental history was revealed.
It was also reported that Ejiro’s case was not his first rape attempt.
An unnamed police source quoted in the report said the victim was treated for bruises at the hospital.

99 Days For The Thief... Graduate nabbed trying to dupe Enugu policemen after succeeding in Edo, Ondo

A 37-year-old university graduate who specializes in duping policemen has been arrested by officers of of the Enugu State Police Command.
Othega Kingsley Benedictwas arrested by the operatives of Ogui Division of theEnugu State commandshortly after he reported that his car had been stolen.
According to a release by the Public Relations Officer of the Enugu State Police,Ebere Amaraizu, Benedict had earlier succeeded in duping police officers in Edo and Ondo states.
He said the suspect would report at the police station that his car had been stolen and then beg them for money to continue his journey, promising to reimburse them.
Amaraizu said Benedict would then disappear with the money and not make contact anymore.
The spokesman said luck however ran out on Benedict when he attempted the same trick at the Ogui Division.
“It was gathered that suspect, in his usual way of confronting his victim irrespective of their organization or status with sympathetic stories that could attract showing of mercy or assistance, had stormed Ogui Division on that fateful day, that his car has been snatched," Amaraizu said.
"He was giving details about his said car that was snatched when one of the policeman walked in and sighted him and immediately raised the alarm about suspect and his nefarious activities pointing out that he was one time duped by the suspect who then reported a case of his car being snatched and later begged him to assist him financially that he was going to get across him to reimburse him which he never did and that he has not seen him till now.
The suspect confessed during investigations.
“Based on this, suspect was referred for investigations where he revealed that he actually duped the officer and that he had duped many of them at Edo State, Ondo State and now in Enugu.”

BUK Confers ‘Emeritus’ on Five Professors

The council and Senate of Bayero University, Kano, have conferred the tittle of ‘emeritus’ on five professors of the university for meritorious services they rendered to the university and humanity.
Out of the five retired professors, three were former vice chancellors, while the two others have continued to provide valuable services to the university.
The conferment of emeritus came at the event of the 31st convocation ceremony of the university. The recipients were former vice chancellors of Bayero university, Professor Dandatti Abdulkadir of Hausa Language, Professor Munzali Jibril of English Language and literature, Professor Sani Zaharaddeen of Islamic studies. The two others are Professor E.O. Olofin of geography and Professor Ibrahim H. Umar of nuclear physics.
Conferring the title on the five professors, the vice chancellor of the university, Professor Rasheed Abubakar described the recipients as worthy and have dedicated their youthful years in seeing the university to its present position.
Prof Abubakar said their marks will continue to be indelible and would fetch them more recognitions and followers to their footsteps.
In his address, the pro chancellor of the university, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed described this year’s convocation as unique as there was recommendation of management and senate that the ceremonies be in line with best global practices where the graduands are the center of attention.

UNILORIN Students Elect Union Leaders via E-voting

University of Ilorin, UNILORIN students elect new union leaders via electronic voting (e-voting) system. The Union’s Independent Student Electoral Commission (ISEC) has released the names of the newly elected excos.
The University of Ilorin took its well-known innovativeness a step further last Tuesday (May 19,2015) when its students elected new leaders, using the electronic voting (e-voting) system.        
The new Executive Committee, led by Alao Idris Ibrahim, a 400 Level student of the Faculty of Law, will pilot the affairs of the Students’ Union in the 2015/2016 session.
Ibrahim emerged the President-elect after polling 6,508 votes to defeat his his two rivals, Mr. Ebunoluwa Zion Ashonibare and Mr. Adedeji Adeyemi Ahmed, who polled 4,793 and 1,395 respectively.
In its bid to conduct a free, fair, credible and convenient election, the Union’s Independent Student Electoral Commission (ISEC) adopted the e-voting system, in which students voted through the University portal.
The Chairman of the electoral body, Mr. John Ogedengbe, declared, “Mr. Alao Idris Ibrahim, having satisfied the conditions stipulated in the constitution for the position of the President, is hereby declared winner.” Mr. Ogedengbe also declared both Miss Imman Lawal and Miss Afuye Olubunmi Olusola Vice-Presidents for Permanent Site (PS) and the College of Health Sciences (COHS) respectively. While Miss Lawal polled 6, 174 votes to defeat both Miss Oseni Adenike and Miss Saidu Sabdat Queen, who polled 2, 616 and 1, 026 votes respectively, Miss Afuye got 345 votes to defeat her only rival, Miss Uzonwanne Benita Adandy, who had 305 votes.
For the position of General Secretary, Mr. Akano Ifeoluwa Thomas was declared winner with 4,452 votes ahead of three other contestants while Miss Sulaimon Saidat Tunrayo became the Assistant General Secretary with 4, 488votes ahead of her only rival, Miss Anisere Khadijat Adejoke, who got 4, 316 votes.
Also elected were Miss Oyekan Oluwadamilola Olasubomi, Financial Secretary with 5, 146 votes; Mr. Abdulrasheed Mahmud Olatunji, Welfare Secretary (PS) with 3, 092 votes; Mr. Ganiyu Kehinde Oyindamola, Welfare Secretary (COHS) with 299 votes; Mr. Aondongusha Tersoo Isaac, Social Secretary with 7,572 votes; Mr. Joel Karimu Ikazuwagbe, Sports Secretary with 7, 324 votes and Adeyemi Ademola Oluwaseye, Public Relations Officer with 2, 032 votes.

Jonathan Appoints Five In Education Ministry

The president appointed Prof. Abdulrashid Garba as the new Registrar of the National Examinations Council (NECO).
A statement from the ministry of education signed by Mallam Sule Ya’u Sule, Senior Special Assistant to the minster noted that the president has also appointed Prof. Monday Tommy Joshua as the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).
Also appointed is Prof. Ismail Junaidu as the Executive Secretary, Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).
Others are Prof. Bashir Mohammed Fagge who is now the new Provost of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Bichi and Dr. Abubakar Abdul Dzukogi who has been appointed Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida.
Sule added that, while Professors Garba, Joshua, and Junaidu “are to serve for five years as their first tenure”, Prof. Fagge and Dr. Dzukogi “are to serve for a period of four years respectively.”

UNIZIK SUG President Impeached

Information reaching 9ja School Gist confirms that the Students’ Representatives Council (SRC) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka (UNIZIK) Friday, impeached the embattled Students’ leader Noble Eyisi.

With this development the union’s vice president Ozems Precious will be sworn in as the new President of the Students’ Union Government of the university.
Recall that the university’s SRC suspended Mr. Eyisi indefinitely from student unionism on Monday 18th May 2015 due to his failure to appear before the house that day as summoned to defend allegations of gross misconduct levelled against him by all members of the union’s executive. However on Friday after hearing on the findings of the panel that was set up to investigate the issues raised by all the executive members as well as the disclosures of Mr. Eyisi when he appeared before the impeachment panel about 48 hours ago, the house unanimously found the embattled leader guilty and consequently impeached him.
Mr Eyisi, an undergraduate of the department of political science of the university, is now the first SUG president impeached within the last 10 years

Bayero University Varsity establishes Centre For Renewable Energy

Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has established a Centre for Renewable Energy, as part of a strategic innovation to explore independent alternative energy to power the university.
The university has also established a Centre for Infectious Disease, to facilitate research, and management of epidemics in Kano, Guardian reports.
The centre, when fully operational, will complement the state-owned Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH).
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, said to journalists that the school has broken new grounds in the areas of research development, innovation and academic programmes.
He also expressed satisfaction that the centres were already making tremendous impact in their areas of expertise, adding that some have already attracted international recognition and funds to yield expected results.
The other centres are Centre for Dry Land Agriculture, Centre for Biotechnology Research, Centre for Advanced Medical Research and Centre for African Entrepreneurship Research and Training, Centre for Quranic Studies, Centre for Islamic Civilization and Inter-faith Dialogue, International Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance and Centre for Gender Studies. Citing the need for manpower capacity building, the Vice Chancellor revealed that more than 500 academic and non-academic staff have been sponsored for postgraduate training abroad.
He added that 28 new programmes in eight faculties have been approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC), while 4 new faculties were awaiting the commission approval.

Ahmadu Bello University Nigeria's first Sugarcane biofactory inaugurated at ABU

Nigeria has joined an elite league of nations with the establishment of the first sugarcane biofactory at theAhmadu bello University(ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State.

President-elect,Muhammadu Buhari, has been urged not to take Nigerians' mandate for granted as he prepares to assume office on May 29.
The Speaker of theWest African Students’ Union Parliament(WASUP),Samuel Solomon, gave the admonition on Thursday, shortly after the body gave an award of excellence to the chairman and members of theDelta State Independent Electoral Commission(DSIEC) in Asaba.
Solomon, a postgraduate student ofLegon University, Ghana, said Nigerians voted Buhari in because they rated him high and had confidence in his abilities.
“The mandate was given to him by the masses, he should not let them down; it is as simple as that," Solomon said.
"A lot of people went out under the sun and the rain to vote for him based on the fact that they felt he is a credible person.
"They have given him the mandate and they want to work with him, therefore the mandate should not be taken for granted because the way in is also the way out.
"What we expect from him is to institute good governance."
DSIEC Chairman,Moses Ogbe, commended the students for recognising the contributions of the commission to the growth of democracy in the country.

UNIBEN, Igbinedion University Student dentists donate clothes, food, others to prison inmates

Members of theChristian Medical and Dental Association Students(CMDAS) have donated some items to students of the Oko prison in Benin City.
The association, comprising students of theUniversity of Benin(UNIBEN) andIgbinedion University Okada(IUO), made the donation during a visit to the prisons,Daily Trustreports.
Items donated include toiletries, boxer shorts, sanitary pads and foodstuff among others.
According to School Mission secretary, Harry Ogodo, said it was part of the association's mandate to help the needy.
He told the inmates to look beyond their present situation.
“Being free is a thing of the mind and not necessarily means being out of prison,” he said.
The students also gave dental health talks to the inmates, urging them to maintain high oral and environmental hygiene.
The prison's Director of Welfare Service,J. I Osemwengie, thanked the students for the visit.

University of Abuja Nigeria comes 2nd at 20 Nations International Law Students Competition

Two students of theUniversity of Abuja(UNIABUJA) came second at the 2015 edition of the 20 Nations International Law Students Competition.
Chukwu SamuelandEsther Johnson-Chu, both law students at UNIABUJA, emerged joint first runners up with Georgia in the competition that was eventually won by England/Wales students.
The international consultation competition was held at the College of Law,Nebraska University, Lincoln, USA
In a statement issued after the competition, the university’s information officer,Waziri Garba, said Nigeria was the only African country in the competition.
After four rounds, Nigeria, Georgia and England/Wales emerged finalists, edging out students from Canada, Georgia, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and other countries.
With Nigeria and Georgia tied on the second position, England /Wales emerged winners.

9,648 Graduates For DELSU Convocation, 13 Bag 1st Class

Thirteen graduates of the Delta State University (DELSU) bagged a First Class during the institution’s Ninth convocation. The valedictorians were among 9,648 graduating students conferred with first degrees and diplomas at the ceremony held at Convocation Arena in Site III of the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Victor Peretomode, said the ceremony was to celebrate the efforts and time invested by the graduands during their days in school, urging the graduates to see the convocation as another beginning in their lives. He urged them to dream big and reflect on their aims in life.
Highlight if the ceremony included presentation of automatic employment to the overall best graduating student, Miss Anthonia Michael of the Department of Botany. She was also given scholarship up to doctoral level.
In her speech, Anthonia expressed gratitude to God for making her feat possible and promised to always strive for excellence.

Nigeria’s Tertiary Institutions Cannot be rated Internationally

Provost of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, AOCOED says Nigeria’s tertiary institutions cannot be rated internationally.
The authorities of the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Ijanikin, on Thursday said that Nigeria’s tertiary institutions could not scale through international rating because of their irregular academic calendars. Mr Wasiu Bashorun, the Provost, AOCOED, Ijanikin, told newsmen in Lagos, on the sidelines of the send forth for the college’s former registrar, Mr Bola Disu.
“If you look at the institutions of higher learning in the country, students’ union leaders, the authorities and government are all getting it wrong.
“Each and everyone of us is supposed to know the rules and guidelines of our institutions. “So, what I am talking about now is that we need to know the dictates, rules, ethics and confines of the institution, and work within them.
“And these are parts of the problems we have been having in our tertiary institutions, not necessarily AOCOED, because I can speak of tertiary institutions in Lagos State. “The union leaders do not know their limits, and the school authorities are not forceful enough in enforcing them.
“It took me a long time to realise that beyond AOCOED, it is high time that the government supports the school authorities in decision-making.
“Especially decisions to ensure that academic activities are not disrupted as a result of unionism, students’ unrest and so on.
“This is the most obvious reason for the irregular academic calendar, and we need to ensure that it is limited,’’ the provost said. He said, however, that anyone who had gone beyond his or her confines to contribute meaningfully to the development of the society should be appreciated and rewarded. According to him, Disu contributed meaningfully to the growth of the institution and put in over two decades of meritorious service to the institution.
He said that just as people were being rewarded for meritorious service, so also should there be sanctions on defaulters, to strike a balance.
Disu said on the occasion that those personnel in the tertiary institutions, whether as a vice-chancellor, provost, lecturer or student, all had sacrosanct duties to perform. “It is must be done to the best of our abilities, because it is not by chance that we were given the opportunities.
“We have to mould the children, the future of the country; we cannot afford to toy with them, we must put in our best,’’ he said.
Disu said that the incoming government had been given a historic duty to perform, and should give education a priority. “Education is not an industry to be treated like any other industry. “As far back as the `50s and `60s, Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo of the defunct Western Region put 50 per cent of the budgetary allocation into education. “If today we are celebrating 10, eight or 13 per cent of the budgetary allocation to education, then we need to do more.
“UNESCO has said 26 per cent; but for us in the tertiary institutions, it should be more than that. “Because if you get it right in education, you get it right in any other sector. But if you get it wrong in education, then forget about other sectors. “The new government must endeavour to systematically increase the budgetary allocation in education,’’ the former registrar said. According to him, education is expensive and may not get the result in a short while, but will definitely reap a good fruit.
“A Yoruba adage says that if you build bridges and structures and you do not build children, the children will grow up to destroy the bridges and structures,’’ he said. Disu, however, chastised the school authorities on how they utilised their allocations. “It is now left for us in the industry to be mindful of how we spend the allocation. “To whom much is given, much is expected; so, whether a vice-chancellor, provost, registrar, please ensure you carry out your duty because it is a sacred duty,’’ he said.
The former registrar said that with good education, there will be no terrorist attacks. “Our children in the North-East will realise that they have a stake in the country; thus the need for their protection,” Disu added. (Vanguard)

Lagos State University Varsity students in dying minutes school fees rush

Students of the Lagos State Polytechnic, (LASPOTECH) Schools of Part-Time Studies Regular, SPTSR are in a last minute rush to pay their school fees so as to be able to write their exams.
With just four days to their first semester exams, reports gathered that some students have already fallen victim of the school's policy of no school fees, no exams as many of the students who are yet to pay their school fees have been prevented from entering exams hall which amounts to an automatic carryover.
It was also discovered that the majority of the students studying for National Diploma and Higher National Diploma are yet to pay their fees and those mostly affected are the new intakes; ND 1 and HND1 who always pay higher to regularise their admission.
As new intakes, they are expected to pay acceptance fee which means the students have accepted the admission offered by the school. This fee must be paid before such a student can access his/her portal before the school fees can be paid.
A visit to the Department of Mass Communication revealed that the students were the most affected by the school policy of no school fees, no exams. At the department, our reporter saw some students looking dejected and unhappy because they were unable to write the day’s paper.
One of the affected students named Mike said that he had to face the penalty because he was yet to pay his fees.
He lamented:
“With the way I’m seeing things, I think I will defer my admission because I am yet to meet up with the amount required for me to write my first semester examination and this is very strange to me compared to where I am coming from.
My former school always admits students to write their first semester exams even when we are yet to pay our school fees because they know we will surely pay before the second semester exams but that is not the system here. I feel sad this is how things play out.
The first two days our exam started was okay because they allowed us write the papers. But that suddenly changed when I got to my exam Hall for Theory of Mass Communication. I was shown the way out of the exam hall when external invigilators came asking for our exams docket. When I couldn’t present mine I was asked to leave the exam hall,” he said.
I have made some payments like the ICT and acceptance fee, leaving me with the mandatory 60 per cent instalment of the tuition fee. Many of my mates coming in as freshers are not finding it funny because only 70 percent of my classmates have paid theirs as at the first week of our exams and some who had part of their fee paid theirs last week and some of us who are yet to pay and were sent out of the exams hall on Saturday had to go begging friends in class to help them do last minute transfer to enable them pay since the school system of payment is online.”
Most of those affected by this development are the newly admitted National Diploma 1 and Higher National Diploma 1 students that are hoping regularize their admission. From our investigation, students of Mass Communication are paying more than other departments. HND1 Mass Comm students pay N13,300 acceptance fee, N2,050 for third party payment and N70,500 as school fee.
The inability of a student to pay the mandatory 60 per cent means that he or she will not write the first semester exams and likely withdraw.

30 Auchi polytechnic students among 41 cultists paraded in Edo

Eleven of the suspects are alleged cult leaders while the rest are student and artisan cultists who have played various roles in recent violent clashes.
The Police spokesperson,Emmanuel Ojukwu, said the suspects were nabbed by the crack team recently set up by IGP Solomon Arase.

“This afternoon, I am presenting before you some persons suspected to have played ignoble roles in acts of terror, vicious inter and intra-cult conflicts that have led to avoidable loss of lives and destruction of property in Edo State," Ojukwu said.

“The suspects who are leaders of cult confraternities are also being interrogated for their conspitorial involvement in the murder of ten Nigerians, including one late Ojo Aye Adu, 55, between Aprril 2015 and May 2015 in Edo State."

He noted that membership of the cult groups are not limited to students as is believed by many.
"As you will find out the cult group membership is not limited to students but also include artisans, civil servants, businessmen, public office holders and professionals in other areas of life."

Ojukwu said the student cultists are linked to the murder of oneConstance Iyoha, a 23-year-old apprentice interior decorator who died during a fracas among members of cult groups.

Federal Government Upgrades Four Colleges Of Education To Universities

The decision was taken at a meeting of the council, presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved the conversion of four federal colleges of education to universities.

Minister of Information, Patricia Akwashiki, and Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, briefed State House correspondents of the meeting’s outcome.Shekarau listed the affected colleges of education as Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo (now Adeyemi University of Education, Ondo); Federal College of Education, Zaria (now Federal University of Education, Zaria); Federal College of Education, Kano (now Federal University of Education, Kano);and Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri (now Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri).

The minister explained that the colleges of education were part of the 21 federal colleges of education that had been awarding degree programmes in the last three decades under the close supervision of the different universities they are affiliated to.

He said the council considered the need for further quality in teaching service, hence the conversion of the colleges to universities since more graduates would be needed in the teaching profession.
“We are heading to having more graduates in the teaching profession and hence the need for these universities to produce graduates in education. If we need quality education, we need quality teachers,” he said.
Shekarau explained that the next step was for the Ministry of Justice to prepare amendment to the laws establishing the colleges.

This, he explained, would be followed by some administrative changes.

The minister added that the council had approved the establishment of the Federal University of Health Sciences in Otukpo, Benue State.

Until the approval, the university was said to be the College of Medical Health Sciences under the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.

He said the institution had now been granted autonomy as part of continuous efforts to ensure quality graduates into the various fields of medicine and sciences.
“So, a total of five universities were approved at the council meeting today,” the minister added.

Fed Poly Unwana Shut Down Over Land Dispute

Prof Ogbonna Ibe-Enwo, the Rector, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana, Afikpo in Ebonyi, says the institution has been closed down indefinitely following a land dispute.
Ibe-Enwo newsmen on Tuesday in Afikpo that the action followed a crisis that erupted between the host community and the institution over some parcels of land.
He said the order for the indefinite closure of the school became imperative in order to ensure the safety of the students.
According to the rector, the closure of the institution is also to forestall possible reprisals from the host community.
“Management took the decision in the best interest of the students. It is believed that the measure will also safeguard the property of the institution.
“We have directed all students to vacate the school today, Tuesday, May 19, pending the return of normalcy to the institution.
“In the meantime, we are negotiating with community leaders and other key stakeholders to ensure quick and amicable resolution of the crisis,’’ Ibe-Enwo said.
The rector described the development as unfortunate and called for understanding from the host community.
“This development is unfortunate and something that could have been resolved through dialogue.’’
However, the rector said security had been beefed up within the school premises.
Meanwhile, a source which pleaded anonymity, said the crisis started in the early hours of Tuesday when some of the aggrieved villagers invaded the school premises.
The source said the invaders destroyed properties and burnt tractors used for grading of the internal roads in the institution.
The source further noted that no fewer than 1,000 angry youths from the community armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons invaded the institution.
According to the source, the angry mob also left many students severely injured while property worth millions of naira were destroyed.
The Ebonyi Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Chris Anyanwu, when contacted, declined comments, saying the Command was yet to be briefed on the incident.
Meanwhile, a member of the community who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity, said the erection of new structure on the disputed parcel of land was the immediate cause of the fracas.
Both the community and the institution are laying claim to that parcel of land. (NAN)
