Latest report reaching US has it that the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), both of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), are protesting over the allowances owed its members by the management.9ja school gist saw members of the union with placards chanting solidarity songs.
Members shut the university’s main gate for several hours leading to gridlock along the University Road and Akoka-Bariga Road.
The Chairman of SSANU, Mr Adetomiwa Adekola, while addressing his colleagues, said the protest had become necessary since earlier attempts made by the unions to resolve their grievances with the management had all proven unsuccessful.
Adekola listed their demands to include:
“Immediate stoppage of further deduction of contributory pension from the salaries of staff as the contributory pension has been deducted from source before the release of subversion for personnel cost by the federal government.
“Payment of 13th month salaries (Christmas) Gross pay between 2007 and 2014 which was paid to all Federal Educational Institutions by the Federal Government as initiated by the late President Umar Yaradua.
“Payment of earned allowance, in particular, hazard allowance to all members of staff of the Federal Universities, beginning from July 2009 till date and immediate implementation of the allowance of staff payroll N30, 000 and N15, 000 for Senior and Junior staffs”
Meanwhile, the management of the university has condemned the protest in very strong terms. A statement signed by the Deputy Registrar (Information), Mr Olagoke Oke, described the action of the unions as “unprovoked” and “a breach of peace”.
“Management condemns in totality the action of the two Unions (SSANU and NASU) in shutting the gates of the University, thereby disrupting peace on campus when there has been no declaration of trade dispute.
“The Earned Allowance is a 2009 Agreement between the Federal Government and various Union of the University.
“In 2013, the FGN released funds for the part payment of the allowances to all deserving members of staff based on approved template and these have been duly disbursed appropriately and no further release has been made.
“Management and the Unions have jointly been reviewing the situation, so this recent unprovoked actions is a breach of peace.
“Management appeals for calm, and wishes to state that it is committed to staff welfare and staff development of all members of staff.”
