A 22-year-old Nigerian graduate,Hassan Uthman Mohammad, has urged youth in the country to use their talents instead of waiting for government jobs.
Mohammad, who recently earned a First Class degree in Financial Economics from theUniversity of Essex, United Kingdom, made the call while speaking withDaily Trust.
Noting the high incidence of unemployment and poverty, he said youths should not wait for readymade government jobs when they could their skills.
“I believe that every single person has the capability and ability to aid and make a change and impact to the society,” he said.
The Economist argued that education should not be seen as the only way to secure employment, noting that some graduates have not found use for their degrees.
“Various students graduate from university without knowing what they are going to do next," he added.
"A large number of graduates end up unemployed, or work in jobs that do not require them to even have a degree.
Therefore, university is not for everyone, especially if what they want to do in the future does not require a university degree."
Mohammad also urged the government to tackle corruption and inefficiency within the Nigerian university system.
He said this will eliminate the need to go abroad to study.
