OAU Shut Down Indefinitely

OBAFEMI Awolowo University has been shut down by the local branch of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of Educational and Associated Institutions.
The strike has paralysed all commercial and all forms of official activities on the campus.
liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine gathered that the commenced since last Friday, July 3, at the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum given to the management by the union to pay its members 64 months (accumulated) earned allowances.
Chairman of the union, Mr Wole Odewumi, told our correspondent that the earned allowances were part of an agreement signed with the Federal Government since 2009.
He said part of these allowances, ‘Responsibility Allowance’, had been paid by management, but described the payment as being ‘selective’, as only few senior staff were entitled to it.
According to him, the OAU management had refused to pay that which affects the majority of the people – ‘hazard allowance’, which he said had accumulated for 64 months.
Odewumi said: “They implemented the one that concerns them, but the one that concerns majority of the workers, they have left unpaid. We held several meetings with them over the matter. Eventually, we gave them an ultimatum which elapsed last Friday.”
Asked if the university authorities had made fresh offers to the union since the strike started, Odewumi confirmed that management held a meeting with the union on Wednesday, but described what was offered as ‘token’, thus unacceptable.
When contacted on the matter, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, said the university had not paid NASU the allowances because the Federal Government had not paid the money and that this was not peculiar to OAU.
“We issued a circular that as soon as the Federal Government pays the second tranche of that money, we will pay everybody accordingly. We are just appealing to them to give peace a chance and go back to their offices. No federal university in this country has paid that money. They should just give us some time,” he pleaded.
On the allegation of ‘selective payment’, Olarewaju said: “I am not aware of any ‘selective payment’. If they are talking about ‘responsibility allowance’, members of NASU who head units were also paid that allowance.
“Responsibility allowance means if you head a unit and you are not given an official car, but use your money or car to run errands for the university, you are paid a stipend of about N6,000 or N8000. It is not selective.”

The Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi (NSUK), is set to begin a 9-programme broadcast schedule on its brand new frequency, NSUK 101.fm.

Named‘the Voice of the Masses', the student-operated radio station will feature nine programmes that cut across news, entertainment, interviews, discussions, health issues, music, sport among others, Daily Trust reports.

According to the studio manager, CaptainAbraham Shammah, students selected from 100 to 400 levels in the department were trained to run the station as on-air personalities and analysts.
The President ofMass Communication Students Association(MACOSA),Ofim Kelechi, credited the head of department,Tonnie O. Iredia, a former Member of the Management Board and Director General of Nigerian Television Authority.

He urged his colleagues to make the best use of the opportunities presented by the radio station.

Students lament drug abuse in North, seek vocational training

A Northern Nigerian students group,Arewa Students Voice(ASV), has called for vocational training and awareness campaigns to help stem drug abuse in the region's tertiary institutions.

According to reports, the group's Director Media and Publicity, Adam Idris, said a visit to most institutions reveal that drug abuse is the main vice amongst students.
Idris called for the concerted awareness campaigns by the authority to educate the students about the dangers of drug and substance abuse.

Noting also the problems of tribalism, political illiteracy and absence of channels for expression, the spokesperson called for proactive measures.

“Provision of vocational training for students to enable them to be self-reliance as well as preaching peace and unity among different tribes at all levels of studies is also among our concerns as a group,” Idris said.

ASV is a student’s body comprising students from all 19 states in North of Nigeria.

Federal Polytechnic Bida Student builds rigging-proof electronic voting website

A Computer Science student at theFederal Polytechnic Bida, Niger state,Umah Faruku Ajewole, has built an electronic voting website which he claims can prevent rigging.
According to reports, the website www.acossfpb.com will be used for the department’s forthcoming elections.
It will allow students to vote and monitor the election from any location provided they have internet connection.
Ajewole claims the website will prevent multiple registrations and voting, thereby ensuring a free and free electoral process that can be replicated at all levels of government.
The department electoral officer,Samuel Alade, noted that Ajewole's creation will eliminate human errors common with manual registration and use of ballot papers as well add counting and security.
Alade called on the management of Nigerian institutions to adopt the system because it is user friendly and cost effective.

Teachers To FG: Increase Our Retirement Age To 65

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has reiterated their demands on the retirement age of primary and secondary school teachers in the country and have urged the federal government to raise it from 60 to 65 years.
The union said every education system needs an appropriate quality and quantity of teachers to function properly and the system is plagued by shortage of experienced teachers due to high retirement rate without without corresponding recruitment of teachers to fill the resultant vacancies.
The national president of the union, Comrade Michael Olukoya, who made the call yesterday at the union’s headquarters after observing the union’s founders’ day, stated that “the primary and secondary education sub-sectors in Nigeria requires adequate number of well-trained and experienced teachers to impact knowledge and skills to learners at the foundation level.”
“It is for this and other similar reasons that the retirement age of lecturers and professors in the tertiary institutions was extended from 65-70 years respectively, while that of judges was also increased to 70 years. We therefore wish to restate our demand that the retirement age for primary and secondary school teachers in the country be raised from 60 to 65 years.”
On the security challenge that has plagued the country, the union also urged the federal government to do more in securing institutions of learning to ensure safe and conducive environment for effective teaching and learning to take place as teachers and students have been sorely affected by the development.
“Media reports reveal continuous attacks almost on daily basis which is indicative of the grim reality that the callous attacks of blood-letting is still daunting. We feel pained and demoralised to note the barbaric acts of terror have scuttled and destroyed talents, potentials and lives of our Chibok girls and thousands of other children in the Northeast of Nigeria. ‎It remains an unforgettable experience that over 19,000 teachers were displaced while no fewer that 272 teachers lost their lives.”
Also, Olukoya called on both state and local governments to effect payment of the backlog of salaries and other entitlements owed teachers without further delay as they remain the critical agents of change and transformation.

Kwara Students Protest Non Payment Of Bursary

Students of Kwara State origin under the aegis of National Association of Kwara State Students (NAKSS) on Wednesday stormed the Government House Ilorin to protest the non-payment of their bursary allowance.
They were protesting non-payment of 2013 and 2014 bursary allowance.
The NAKSS’s president, Mohammed Lateef put the bursary arrears at N235 million.
The state governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed was said to have granted representatives of the students an audience.
Ahmed according to Government House source sought the patience and understanding of the students,blaming the non payment of the allowance on dwindling allocation from the federation account.
He was quoted to have pleaded with the protesting students to be calm and not take laws into their hands.
There was heavy security presence at the Government House as a result of the protest.
Mobile policemen were seen at the entrance of the premises to prevent possible breakdown of law and order as a result of the protest.

NYSC Begs MDAs To Stop Rejecting Corps Members

The National Youth Service Corps has expressed concern over the rejection of corps members by government institutions to do their internship, directing that henceforth, all organisations especially ministries, departments and agencies should “always accept corps members posted to them for primary assignment.”
A statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Abosede Aderibigbe, reminded the MDAs that “corps members are, as far as possible, posted based on their disciplines and within the limits imposed by the current NYSC posting policy.”
She said, “All corps employers are to note that the corps members answered the clarion call to participate in the national service out of patriotism and have always passionately looked forward to rendering services for the progress of their fatherland.
“In view of the foregoing, all stakeholders, including employers, are requested to always give the young men and women of the NYSC the necessary support and encouragement, by accepting them whenever they are posted for primary assignment.
“It is noteworthy that rejection of corps members posted to organisations, resulting in some of them roaming the streets in search of places of service, is at variance with the ideals of the founding fathers of the NYSC scheme and should therefore be discouraged by all well-meaning Nigerians.
“On our part, we in the NYSC remain committed to contributing to the socio-economic development of our dear country through harnessing of the potentials of these patriotic youth, and will continue to count on the support of all and sundry in that regard.”

MOUAU Female Student Aborts Baby

THERE was pandemonium Thursday at the new female hostel in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture over a female student who aborted and dumped a foetus claim to be five Month Old at the backyard of the hostel.
The MOUAU female student is believed to have drunk a strong concoction or take a hot injection into her system that resulted in a backyard abortion of the advanced pregnancy.

An eyewitness, Precy Nenyenwa Amadi, a student of Michael Okpara University told liveschoolnews.com.ng reporter: “As at 8.45am today at the new female hostel there was a great uproar regarding to what a female student did by aborting a baby that is claimed to be above 5months (the parts of the body have been formed). Some matured ladies said, this act was perfectly done by taking in a ‘hot injection’ into the body system to shrink the baby for smooth removal. However, this incident happened closed to my window just behind the place we fetch our water and such sacrilage must have been done at night. Its really and eye-sore and the girls were laying curses on the girl that did such thing. The boys left their hostel to the girls hostel but they were not allowed to enter and see the abominable act commited. The question is, Who could have done such an outrageous act? Can a general DNA test be performed to know the culprit? Well, that can be done in a strict Private University because the baby or the foetus rather has been buried by the school security that was around on the scene”.
Efforts to obtain more information on the matter from the vice- Chancellor of the University proved fruitless.
