Policemen Shoot At Protesting NMTI Students

Pandemonium struck at the Metallurgical Training Institute, NMTI, Onitsha, Anambra State, Thursday following gunshots allegedly fired by some policemen to disperse the rampaging students who rampage in protest against poor hostel accommodation, rejection of the school’s diploma certificate by other Federal Government institutions, among other agitations.

9ja School Gist gathered that Four students , sustained various degrees of injuries.
Their injuries, according to eye-witness, followed a stampede arising from the gunshots allegedly fired by some policemen to disperse the rampaging students who had already barricaded the ever busy Onitsha/Owerri dual carriageway in front of the NMTI main campus.

The students made bonfires in the middle of the road, obstructing vehicular movements on the federal highway.
Before the arrival of a police team from nearby Divisions like Okpoko, Awada and Obosi, the students had succeeded in causing total blockade of the road, chanting solidarity songs as they made the bonfire.
According to the source, trouble started in the school on Wednesday morning when some graduates of the school who had gone to Petroleum Training Institute, PTI, Effurun, Warri, Delta State, to further their studies were refused admission.

They were also allegedly chased out by some security agents attached to the school over the excuse that NMTI diploma certificate was not duly recognized by PTI, also a Federal Government-owned institution.

The source said the aggrieved students allegedly communicated their situation to some of their colleagues still studying at NMTI, telling them that they were wasting their time as the Diploma Certificate from NMTI, which is under the Federal Ministry of Mines and Power, was not recognized outside the school on graduation.

The situation was said to have angered the students who now organized themselves and delegated the Students’ Union Executive and some of the best minds to approach the Director of the school, Mr. I. I. Okonkwo, to know his reaction.

On reaching the Director’s office on Wednesday, the students delegation were allegedly turned back by the school boss and the students immediately went on rampage.

It was gathered that feeling extremely humiliated by the director’s uncompromising behaviour, the students accused him of not showing enough sympathy towards their plights and as early as 8a.m. yesterday, they mobilized themselves and vandalized some of the school property, including electronic gadgets and computer sets.

On realizing the magnitude of the protest, the director allegedly ran into his office with some members of senior staff of the school in a bid to escape the students’ wrath.

Gunmen Abducted Varsity Vice Chancellor In Rivers

Report reaching us has it that the Vice Chancellor of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Prof. Rosemund Green-Osahogulu has been abducted by yet to be identified gunmen.

liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine gathered that Green-Osahogulu was abducted on Thursday on her way to her residence after the day’s work at the institution.

It was gathered that the vice chancellor had left the university premises at about 5pm and was around the Aker Base axis of Rumuolumeni in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area when she was accosted by the suspected kidnappers.

The vice chancellor of the Rivers State-owned university was reportedly trailed by her captors from the university’s main campus.

Driving in what could be described as commando, the kidnappers, who were said to be on high speed, overtook and blocked Green-Osahogulu’s car.

“Those who took her away were about four in number. They were shooting sporadically into the air and people around fled as they took her away,” a source told Southern City News.

It was also learnt that though some security details that were with her when the incident happened were overpowered by her captors before she was driven away to an unknown destination.

The kidnappers, however, had not established contact with the family of their victim or the authorities of the University.

Confirming the abduction of the vice chancellor, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, said security operatives had swung into action to ensure her release.
Mohammad explained that though efforts were being made to free Green-Osahogulu, nobody had been arrested in connection with her kidnap.

Meanwhile reaction is now trailing the abduction of the vice chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University, Green-Osahogulu.

The latest reaction is coming from the APC candidates in the April 2015 governorship election in River State, Dakuku peterside who express dismay over the state of criminality in the state and warned on the die consequences if the situation remain uncheck.

Dakuku Peterside in a statement by his media aid, Sylvester Asoya therefore call on the security agency in the state to redouble their effort to rescue the professor.

Peterside equally enjoined the good people of the state to assist the police with useful information that could lead to the rescue of the university don.

YABATECH Expels 4 Students Over Exam Malpractice

A total of four students of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State have been shown the way out of the institution by the authorities of the institution for examination misconduct.

The expelled students were found liable for examination misconduct.

This is contained in a circular dated June 18, and signed by the Deputy Registrar of the college, Mrs. Titilayo Obadimu, in Lagos.

According to the circular, the academic board approved the expulsion of the students while considering the report of examination malpractice cases for second semester 2013/2014 full-time academic session.

Ogun State Institute of Technology Closed Down, Rector Goes Into Hiding

Students of Ogun State Institute of Technology have crippled academic activities in the school.

According to the information, the pandemonium that ensued following the protest by the students made the Rector of the institute, Dr. Funke Akinkuolere to go into hiding.

It was learnt that the protest started when the students were stopped from holding their election by the Rector.

According to a source, the election was supposed to have been held last year December, but, was postponed by the rector who resumed office June last year.
Effort made to get the Rector to comment on the issue proved abortive.
Meanwhile the state government has directed that the institute be closed down till further notice.

University Of Ibadan Raided By Robbers

The Institute of African studies at the University of Ibadan, Oyo state has warned her students to be wary of friends and acquaintances they bring to the institute


A Naij.com correspondent learned that the warning was passed down to the students during the orientation ceremony for new postgraduate students which held on Monday.

Our source reports that the students were advised by the Institute to ensure they come alone to school following a recent robbery incident in which valuable materials belonging to the institute were carted away.

One student who requested anonymity said ” During our orientation on Monday, one of the lecturers at the Institute emphasized that we should always come to the institute alone.

He added that the lecturer had gone on to narrate how recently some armed robbers broke into the institute and made away with valuable artifact.

Investigations revealed that the institute has taken steps to forestall any criminal activity.

One of such step we gathered was the posting of  security operatives to man the entry and exit points of the institute.

The students were also advised to have on them their identity cards.

Security reports show that armed robbery incidences have been on the rise at the University.

Some other students revealed that for a while the staff quarters have continued to be burgled at will  adding that one of their lecturers  was robbed in her house at the staff quarters.

She was said to be sleeping  at night when the robbers broke into her house somewhere at Kuti quarters, and made away with her laptop, handsets,and other valuables.

Most of the residents within the quarters seem to have started beefing up their personal security, as installation of burglary proof doors and windows seem to have become the in thing.

Still Ibadan the police has just reported the arrest of a gang consisting of 11 kid robbers.

The acting Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase has said that the Nigerian Police will continue to do all it can to ensure that crime and criminals become a thing of the past in Nigeria.

Rivers State Polytechnic "Our Governor should not do this to us" - Rivers' sacked workers

The employees of the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori sacked by the state government are appealing to well meaning people of the state to lobby the state government on to reverse the sack.

The State Government had on Monday announced the cancellation of the polytechnic workers appointment. Those affected are academic and non-academic staff, who were recently employed by the Rotimi Amaechi administration.

Speaking on behalf of the over 300 affected, Jekey Lekue, Grace Ikue and Basil Ujobolo urged the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, not to go back on his promise during his inauguration to give hope to the people.

Some of the retrenched workers lamented that they had been searching for job for the past five years before they were eventually employed at the state polytechnic, according to sources in Port Harcourt.
They also stated that some of them had to resign from their former place of work after they received their appointment letters from the authorities of the State Polytechnic, Bori, Khana Local Government Area.
Explaining that they went through a painstaking process before they were employed, the sacked workers recalled that they had supervised the last examination in the school before the announcement that their employment had been cancelled.
“We are calling on well meaning Rivers people to do justice to this issue. We beg Rivers people to step in. Governor Nyesom Wike gave the state hope on May 29, 2015. We have already been captured in the data base of the state. Our governor should not do this to us,” they further appealed.
In another development, the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has disbanded the Rivers State Road Traffic Management Agency known as TIMARiV.
Reacting to the sacking of over 300 RIVPOLY workers, the Special Adviser on Media to the State Governor, Sir Opunabo Inko-Tariah, stated their appointment was marred by irregularities.
Inko-Tariah said, “The appointment of the staff were marred with irregularities. Such an appointment had to be terminated to look into the whole issue holistically.
“The sacking was premised on irregularities. So many procedural obligations were breached and as a result, the exercise was deprived of due process.”
Speaking on the Rector of the polytechnic, Dr Obiando Elechi Amadi, who was sent on a compulsory leave, Inko-Tariah pointed out that it was as a result of a case of official misconduct on the rector’s part.
On the disbandment of the state traffic management agency, the governor’s aide specifically said that some of the officials of TIMARIV were making illegal seizure of vehicles in order to extort money from innocent citizens.
According to him, “Many of those guys were making illegal and embarrassing seizure of vehicles on the roads and this is becoming an eyesore. Let us leave politics aside; it is a known fact all over the state that TIMARIV had constituted itself into a public nuisance.
“The action of its staff had, in most cases, brought River State into disrepute. What they do in most cases is illegal. They are not supposed to struggle for the steering with the driver of a vehicle, but this is what they often do.
“The state government can no longer cope with the excesses of this TIMARIV staff. It was on that premises that the governor decided that it should be disbanded.
“Governor Nyesom Wike also instructed that all seized vehicles should be released with immediate effect. He further instructed that nobody should pay a kobo to TIMARIV.
“If anybody should be refused or deprived of the retrieval of his/her vehicle, such a person should report to the nearest police station and the TIMARIV staff in question will be dealt with,” Inko-Tariah added.

Many Nigerians who travel overseas in search for foreign degrees end up attending substandard institutions.
The Vice ChancellorUniversity of Abuja(UNIABUJA), Prof. Michael Adikwu, said this in a recent interview, adding that such institutions are no better than secondary schools in Nigeria.
"Nigerians just want to travel abroad for studies, most of the schools they attend are not better that our secondary schools here," he said in aDaily Trustinterview.

He noted that having acquired foreign degrees, these graduates may still not be able to pass Nigerian examinations.
"And when they come back if they are subjected to exams of Nigerian education standard only few of them will pass the exam.
"So what standard are we talking about?"
Prof. Adikwu also observed that Nigeria's drive to improve access to tertiary education must not be at the expense of quality.

Ahmadu Bello University Female 200 level student killed in car crash

A 200-level female undergraduate atAhmadu Bello University(ABU), Zaria, has been killed in a road crash.
Fatima Asabe Jibril, was involved in a ghastly auto crash on Sunday June 14, 2015.

The Vice President of the ABU chapter of Students Counselling Association of Nigeria (SCASSON),Abubakar Ibraheem, toldDaily Trustthat Jibril's death is sad and painful.
“I was shocked when I heard about the demise of Fatima," Ibraheem said.
"I could not believe it because of the closeness between us. I tried to get the fact about the incident and I eventually realised it is true.”
Ibraheem added that the deceased student was nice and well-behaved.

Dr. Umar Musa Mustapha, the new Pro -Chancellor and Chairman of Council, University of Ibadan said his mission is to place the institution among the top 100 Universities in the world. As a Mathematician himself, he promised to assist the VC in anyway possible towards the actualization of the Mathematics Centre Project. He emphasized the need for both lecturers and students to stay-off plagiarism which carries serious penalty which could bring the reputation of University to public disrepute.
Dr. Mustapha also called for more collaboration between UI and other world-class Universities including Nigerian universities, especially in the areas of Economics, Business Studies, Medicine, Forest Resources Management, History, Fisheries Management and Aquaculture as well as Wildlife and Ecotourism.

Dr Umar Musa Mustapha was born in Kano, Kano State in August, 1961. He is a visionary, dynamic, thoroughbred and entrepreneurial leader with a diverse background. Board Chairman, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer and General Manager/Chief Operating Officer while working for world-class multinationals and Nigerian public and private organizations that are operating in competitive sectors of the Nigerian/global economy. Dr. Mustapha is also a farmer with interest in irrigation, poultry and fattening. Other postions he has held include President of Bicycle Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria, President of D/Kudu Development Forum which is a non-governmental organization with interest in children, physically challenged people, healthcare, agriculture and rural development.
He is married to Princess Amina Balarabe Sulaiman and Maryam Aliyu Sani and has many children.
It will be recalled that the Federal Government appointed Dr Umar Musa Mustapha as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman for the Governing Council of the University on 04 April, 2015, and inaugurated into office on 05 May, 2015. He takes over from General Adeyinka Adebayo (Rtd).

4 Students Of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) To Represent Africa In America

Four students of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) have put the five-year old university on the world map again by qualifying for the finals of this year’s edition of Imagine Cup organized Microsoft Incorporation

The race commenced with the competition among higher institutions in Nigeria which ABUAD won to qualify for the African Zone (Semi-finals) where it defeated higher institutions in other African countries including Burkina Faso, South Africa, Uganda, Egypt, Angola, Algeria and Morocco as well as Tunisia to qualify for the Worldfinals.
This feat is predicated on the quartet’s invention of Asthmavisor, a device for a more effective and efficient way of managing Asthma, particularly among children.

VARSITY WORKERS THREATEN STRIKE OVER STAFF SCHOOLS

University workers under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) yesterday staged a peaceful protest over what they called threat to staff primary schools.

Western zone of SSANU comprising universities in that axis, staged the protest in reaction to a March 5, 2015, circular allegedly issued by the Federal Ministry of Education to universities to remove staff schools’ from their payrolls.

The association said the move was to privatize the primary schools and lay off staff who they said are part of the university organ. They vowed to shut down universities if the decision is not reviewed.

The workers also demanded the sack of Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, saying he has overstayed.

They carried placards with inscriptions such as: “SSANU says job security is our right, we shall defend it; Enough of retrogressive policies in universities; No to privatization of university staff schools; Federal Government should not throw universities into needless crisis; Professor Julius Okojie must go” among others.

Addressing SSANU members of the University of Ilorin chapter, after a peaceful protest held at the main campus, SSANU Western Zone Vice President, Mr Alfred Jimoh, said “anyone who dares us would have himself to blame.”

He said the 2009 agreement reached with the Federal Government should not be tampered with, adding that attempts to manipulate or misinterpret the agreement would be vehemently resisted.

Lagos State Bursary 2015: Apply Now!

Application is open for Lagos State Bursary 2015 targeted to support Lagos State Indigenes studying in any accredited tertiary institution in Nigeria. University, Polytechnic and College of Education students are welcome to apply.
Already, online application for the Lagos State Bursary 2015 has commenced since June 1st and expected to end November 13th same year. All applications are done on the Lagos Scholarship portal.

Cost of Lagos State Bursary Form
The application form is not 100% free. Each applicant is expected to pay, and obtain a receipt, of One Thousand Naira (N1, 000.00) only while Law School/Maritime Academy students are to pay Two Thousand (N2, 000.00) only.
Payment should be made at the Office of the Special Adviser on Education, Block 5, Room 314, the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja. Thereafter, scratch cards should be obtained at the Office of the Lagos State Scholarship Board, 254 Ipaja Road, beside NYSC Orientation Camp, Agege, on presentation of the above mentioned receipt.

Duly completed application forms must be brought and submitted with photocopies of all documents required by the Board at the interview venues.

DELSU Retains 12 Best Graduating Nursing Students

Management of the Delta State University (DELSU), during the he Oath/Induction Ceremony of the 2012/2013 set of Bachelor of Nursing Science graduates offered Graduate jobs to about 12 Best Graduating Students of the institution.
Students Nigeria gathered that while some of the Graduates were employed as lecturers, a number of them were retained as Graduate Assistants (GA).

As a prize for their own offenses, it was learnt that about 21 other students were expelled for alleged forgery and sundry offenses.

The Delta State University Vice Chancellor, Professor Victor Peretomode, who spoke during the ceremony explained that the training of Nurses like every other profession has always been capital intensive, adding that the university cannot transfer the heavy financial burden to the parents of the students.

Universities That Take Lower Credit For Direct Entry Admission

We understand that some Graduates of NCE and ND programmes with lower CGPA of say between 2.00 and below 3.00 are worried whether or not their choice university will accept them for failure to obtain upper credits in their former program. Cultist who wanted out killed by members of his group

Godwin Victor, 30, aka Sangba, who was abducted by members of his former cult group for wanting out and embracing a normal life, has been found dead, Punch gathered.

It was also gathered that Sangba’s hands and legs were tied, while a log of wood was also tied to his neck before he was thrown into the Lagoon.
Policemen reportedly recovered his corpse around the UNILAG waterfront on Thursday.
It was initially reported last Friday that Sangba had quit his group due to fear for his safety and police harassment.

Some of his friends, who did not support his decision, attacked him.

He was said to have moved to Port Harcourt after increased threats to his life.
However, when he came back to check his family, he was abducted.

The family had reported him missing at the Bariga Police Division, after which a search began for the deceased.
A police source said, “The man has been killed. His two hands and legs were tied with ropes. The cult guys tied a heavy log of wood to his neck and threw him into the Lagoon. His corpse was recovered around the UNILAG waterfront.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, also confirmed the development.
He said, “His wife reported a case of missing person to the police on Monday. Since then, we had been out looking for him until on Thursday when we were informed that a corpse was found inside the Lagoon. It turned out to be him.”
The victim’s remains has been deposited in a mortuary, while the matter had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, according to Nwosu.

One Chance Danfo driver dupes woman of 1.5 million naira

A Danfo driver has been arrested for allegedl duping his neighbour of a total sum of 1.5 million naira.

Patrick Abaleke, a driver of the commercial buses popularly called Danfo, has been arrested for allegedly duping one Miss Chinasa Nwokenem, his neighbour, of N1.5 million, Vanguard reports.

It was learned that Patrick convinced Chinasa, a mother of one, wanted to invest in the transportation business, for which she paid a total of N1.5 million at different times to the suspect.

It was alleged that Patrick threatened to kill her each time she attempted to question the said investment, so Chinasa reportedly ran to the police.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect was in their custody and would be charged to court.

Investigations are still ongoing.

In Abuja Female corper constructs maternity hospital for community

She said she raised the fund to build the hospital from Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOS) and other good spirited personalities in the society.

A female corps member has completed a three million naira maternity hospital at the Primary Health Care Centre, Jikwoyi,Abuja.

The corper,Jalila Ahmad,who is serving with the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), constructed a labour room, two office blocks for family planning and antenatal at the centre.

She said she raised the fund to build the hospital from Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOS) and other good spirited personalities in the society.
Speaking at the inauguration of the project, Ahmad said,"no cause is closer to my heart than helping the underprivileged especially mothers and babies.’’

The corps member said she was motivated to embark of the projects due to the poor sanitation of the environment and the need to give the centre facelift.

She called on well-meaning Nigerians to assist the government in providing basic amenities for the less-privileged to ensure a healthy living.

Ahmad who has also constructed modern toilet, repaired borehole, erected signposts and also provided refuse bins, among others, said the maternity hospital form part of her Community Development Projects.

The project was received by the Supervisory Councilor for Health in the area,Josephine Nnodim, the Supervisory Councilor for Health in the area.

Ahmad graduated from UniversityHoustonin theUnited Stateswith a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Biology.

Female Ogun Poly Student Found Dead In Shrine (Photo)

A female student of Science Laboratory Technology department at the Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade, hails from Ekiti state who was said to be missing some days ago have been found in a shrine with her vital organs missing.
liveschoolnews.com .ng grapevine learnt that the decomposing remains of 21 year old Morenikeji Owolabi were discovered in a shrine at the rustic Eposo village, Ishara, in Remo North Local Government Council of Ogun state.
Her dismembered and decomposing remains were found littered at a Shrine by policemen.
The girl was allegedly lured to the shrine by a herbalist, Femi Awise, where she was found dead.
Awise, a native of Isara and prime suspect, is said to be on the run but five persons suspected to be working for him, including a cyclist who conveyed the girl to the shrine and an apprentice of Awise, have been arrested.
The suspects are Adeyemi Ademolu (the cyclist), Omolaso Taiwo (Awise’s apprentice), Lateef Ali, Akinyemi Dare, and Sokoya Wasiu.
According to Ademolu, the victim spoke with Awise twice seeking information about the direction while being conveyed to the shrine.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Valentine Ntomchukwu, led some reporters to the shrine tucked inside a forest.
He said investigation had started to ascertain how the victim was killed.
Although the decaying legs of the girl exhumed from a shallow grave few meters away from the shrine were discovered but liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine gathered that investigation continues to trace where her head, breasts and private part were kept.
The cubicle – size shrine made of corrugated iron sheets, was strewn with scary fetish objects, bottles of palm oil knives, plates and a pot filled with boiled human flesh and which had also began to emit foul odour.
Ntomchukwu said, “What we want to tell the public is that they should monitor the movement of their wards and children, especially when they are left to be in school and other public institutions.
“They should always keep watch over their children, call them regularly and where they don’t see them, they should quickly report to the police.
“If we had received this report on time, we would have been able to trace this lady. By the time we got the report, we now started scouting for information, only to arrest the okada man (motorcyclist) that brought her to the Shrine.
“It was from that okada man that we were able to know that she was taken to this area and by discreet investigation, we were able to discover this shrine.
“We don’t know how long this shrine has been in existence but we assure you that this particular nefarious activity would be put to an end.”
The Local Government chairman, Femi Soyemi, who was shocked and appalled by the horrible discovery said he never believe such savagery could exist in his domain.
Soyemi said, “I was shocked because I never expected this kind of horrible and brutal thing exists here.”
