33 Students Bag First-Class Honours In LAUTECH

Thirty three students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH will bag bag first class degrees at its 2013/2014 convocation.
It has been revealed that no fewer than thirty three persons will be awarded 1st Class Honours certificates at the 12th Convocation Ceremony of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso (LAUTECH) which will take place on April 23 .

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adeniyi Gbadegesin, stated this in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, at a briefing to herald the institution’s 12th convocation.
Gbadegesin disclosed that a total of 4,697 first degrees and over 9,000 higher degrees would be awarded during the ceremony.

In addition to the 33 students that bagged first class honours, 1,144 bagged second class upper division honours, 2,575 bagged second class lower division honours, 692 bagged third class honours while 140 graduated as nursing students.

The VC explained that the convocation ceremonies starting on April 23 would coincide with the 25th Founder’s Day ceremony of the university.

UNILAG Students, Enugu Youths Protest #Xenophobic Attacks

University of Lagos, UNILAG students and Enugu youths protest xenophobic attacks on foreigners, especially Nigerians, in South Africa.
The latest protesters included the students of the University of Lagos and members of the Youth Action for Success.

The UNILAG students on Monday staged a protest at the South Africa’s High Commission, Lagos, while the YAS members took to the streets of Enugu on Tuesday.
The UNILAG students delivered a protest letter to the South African High Commissioner, Amb. Lulu Mguni, giving the South African authorities a 24-hour ultimatum to either stop the attacks or face a boycott of businesses and products from the country.
The students came in three buses, one of which had ‘Aluta missile’ on the number plate.
One of the students that participated in the protest told our correspondent that the demonstration had been planned to move on to major South African companies on the Lagos Island but that the police stopped the protesters.

He said, “We issued a 24-hour ultimatum for the appropriate authorities of South Africa to stop the attacks or they risk a boycott of their businesses and products in the country. We will be the ones to champion the boycott.
“We were to go to a major South African company on Tiamiyu Savage Street but armed policemen resisted us and we cancelled our trip.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the protest.
He said, “The students, under police protection, demonstrated at the South African High Commission. They made attempts to go to the DSTV and MTN offices but were appropriately advised in the interest of security.
“They peacefully departed after a hitch-free protest.”
In Enugu, the youths, who protested on the streets of the coal city, demanded an end to the attacks within 48 hours, failing which South African investments in Enugu State and other parts of Nigeria would be destroyed.
The youths, under the aegis of YAS, carried placards with various inscriptions. Some of the placards read, “No to mindless killing of Nigerians”, “Stop this xenophobia now” and “Don’t tempt our patience”, among others.
Speaking to journalists during the rally, the leader of the group, Jesechai Okezie, said the South Africans had not been grateful for the hospitality of other Africans.
He said, “We are not happy that Nigerians are being brutalised and killed in South Africa.
“We allowed South Africans to come here and operate; they have Shoprite, Multichoice, MTN and a host of other investments here.
“So why are they killing us? Why are they brutalising us? Why are they denying us of our economic rights?
“We love other nationals here in Nigeria, we treat them with the highest level of hospitality, but this is what we have got in return.”
Demanding an immediate end to the attacks, Okeke said, “These killings must stop forthwith.
“We are giving the South African government 48 hours to ensure that these killings and looting come to an end.
“The President of South Africa must assure the world that the lives and properties of Nigerians are safe; if they don’t do that, we are going to react and our reaction will be disastrous.
“We are asking Nigerian youths to remain calm.” (Punch Newspaper)

REMINDER! REMINDER!! 20 THINGS YOU MUST NOT FORGET TO TAKE TO NYSC ORIENTATION CAMP

Helllo intending Otondo and Otondo to be . Batch A 2015 would be off to your nysc orientation camp  very soon . So for the love i have for you all as a tiny expert in that area. i would be giving some tips from this post till Monday before you leave.
So Today post is concerning things you just cant live without in camp except you intend on borrowing or stealing?(hmmm) .

1.PHOTOCOPIES OF YOUR DOCUMENTS: just make up to 10-12 copies of every document required . There would  be photocopiers at the nysc orientation camp at maami market but trust me , it is double the price and it saves time.   Statement of Result (Original and Photocopies) , School ID Card (Original and Photocopies)

2.COPIES OF PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPHS: This is very important . from experience i would say you make up to 30. Reason being that you would need them at every registration point mostly. Then those of you who would likely redeploy , you  would need more than others . It is always advisable to have extra copies of them too.

3.CALL UP LETTER: This is a vital part of  camp and the only evidence that you are a corper (otondo) and you are not impersonating anyone. so if at all you even forget you luggage (lol) never forget this. Word of advice—-keep it like its your life, do not laminate it o. i know someone who was sent back because she forgot hers. and also someone who had to beg and beg before his letter was collected because he laminated his own copy.  So please o avoid all these stress and make enough copies of this letter like 15 .

4.STATIONERY :BIRO  , PAPER , GLUE , TIPPEX AND STAPLER :Yeah this saves time and lots of unnecessary begging. also do not forget to include pins in your stapler.

5.ROUND-NECKED WHITE T-SHIRTS  : this is an essential outfit in camp in fact in most camps this  is the only allowed cloth to be worn throughout your 3 weeks . Even to church , you might not be allowed to wear colored cloths.  You would be given 2 pairs of white t-shirts at camp to just fulfill all righteousness which surely would never be your size especially our very slim and small otondo in size . So you can bring extra pairs

(3) . Word of advice:  do not carry more than 2 pairs of colored clothes because you wont need it .

6.WHITE SHORTS: i beg you please do bring yours , you would also be given 2 pairs of shorts which are really poor in material . they tear easily and are thick . it can be annoying. so my dear otondos bring like 4 pairs of shorts .  Trust me also you wont like to wash everyday ,so bring enough to last you like 3 days so that you wont be stranded.

7.PLAIN WHITE SNEAKERS/TENNIS SHOES: This is a very important outfit. you would also be given a pair of low quality tennis shoes customized for nysc. Its either you are not given your size . After the first wash it starts tearing . So just buy yours. They also sell this in camp , so in case you are not able to get  you could buy in camp just carry extra cash for that because the price would be higher cos they know you have no choice than to buy.

8.WHITE SOCKS: Just get extra pairs . you would also be given 2 pairs.

9. A PAIR OF SLIPPERS  

10.DETTOL : This is very very essential . firstly the bathrooms can be very annoying and dirty  and you would not like to have infection from camp. Bad idea. Also the water can be dirty.Most people always have reaction to it.

11.MOSQUITO NET:  you would do not want to fall sick in camp from malaria. Just bring yours. Also bring  ropes you would use to tie it o.  i also used mine as a room to protect my box and properties from thieves and also from some insects and ants

12.OTHERS: Towel , bed sheets Pillow Cases and A Pillow . you could also get pillow from mammy market.

13.NOVEL :For those who get bored easily , please carry some . And for guys psp or chess.  also iPod and mp3.

14.CASH: extremely important. you would need between 15000–20000 for the extravagant spenders and for those that can manage say 10000-15000. There are lots of things  that take up money . Things like food(for those who don’t intend eating camp food) , recharge cards, charging of phones , pleasures e.t.c NOTE—- you wont be allowed to leave camp o. So do not be stranded , trust me not a good idea.Just budget 1000 per day . You could carry your ATM incase.

15.ALMIGHTY WAIST POUCH/BAG:Very very essential . This served as my bank and locker for important items. Things like phones, money , id card , keys , ATM cards e.t.c  I even know someone who sleeps with hers on because of people on the loose to steal .

16.TORCHLIGHT OR RECHARGEABLE LAMPS: Most or in fact all camps do not give light except at a specific time of the day . Its very essential . especially at night when you need to use the bathroom , early in the morning when preparing for morning drills and meditations. at night in case you need to do anything . At mammy , there is always light till they close . You can charge them there at a little fee.

17.BASIC DRUGS: like panadol or paracetamol , allergy medicine , menustaral pain drug , nausea relief drugs , antibiotics e.t.c  . The camp clinic is always inadequately filled with drugs so help yourself.PADLOCKS : please lock your boxes and bags to avoid regrets and crying o . i know people who lost things to theives due to carelessness

18.Toiletries/Sanitary Pad .

19.Bucket, soap dish (buy at the camp site, don’t stress yourself taking one to the place, they always sell in the camp)

20.PLATE , BOWL AND CUP: For eating . Important for those who intend on eating

"Not A Good Swimmer" 22-yr-old undergraduate dies while swimming in ocean

Police sayDamian Parks’ body was found on the beach early Monday morning, almost a day after sea waves swept him away.
According to aU.S. Coast Guardreport, Parks and four friends were swimming in the ocean nearSun Splash Parkin Daytona Beach on Sunday morning lost grip of a friend’s hand.
He yelled for help but the waves swept him away and all attempts to find him proved abortive.
Rescue crews searched with a helicopter and jet skis for hours but could not locate Parks until his body was found on the beach shore.
The deceased's mother,Carolyn ParkstoldWESH 2that she cannot understand why he decided to swim in the ocean because he is not a good swimmer.
“I don’t know why it happened, why he would go into the water like this because he is not a good swimmer," she said.
"I had talked to him just before he came out here and he told me he was tired and was going to rest, not knowing he was going to come out here to the beach."
In a statement posted on the BCU Facebook page, the institution’sPresident, Edison O. Jackson, said the student's death is a 'sad moment'.

Young Hacker Police arrest 14-yr-old student for changing background of teacher's computer to kissing gays after stealing password

Police in Florida have arrested a teenage student who stole an administrative-level password to access his school's secure computer network and change a teacher's desktop background to an image of two men kissing.

A 14-year-old Florida student has been arrested and charged with felony hacking charges after he changed the background of a teacher's computer to photo of two men kissing using a stolen password.
Domanik Green, a student of Paul R. Smith Middle School in Holiday, committed the crime on Tuesday March 31 and was subsequently charged with felony offense against a computer system and unauthorized access.
According to Pasco County Sheriff,Chris Nocco, the teenager stole an administrative-level password to access his school's secure computer network.
Nocco told theTampa Bay Timesthat the student's action may be seen as a prank but it has more consequences.
"Even though some might say this is just a teenage prank, who knows what this teenager might have done," Nocco said.
Green said he learned the password, which is the teacher's last name, by watching a teacher type it in two years ago.
He toldWTSP-TVthat he would not have played the prank if anyone had told him it was illegal.
"If they would have notified me it was illegal, I wouldn't have done it in the first place. But all they said was, 'You shouldn't be doing that,'" he said.
His mother,Eileen Foster, said the charge levelled against her son was undeserving, noting that her son could have done more damage than just play a prank.
"He had the chance to get into the FCAT files, he had the chance to change grades, to do whatever you can do in the FCAT files and he didn't take it," she said.
"I think that alone proves he doesn't deserve a felony charge."
Green confessed that he played the prank on a teacher he doesn’t like.
He has been suspended for 10 days.

Bad grooming Students prevented from writing WASSCE due to overgrown hair and nails

Some eight students of the St. Johns Grammar Senior High School, inAchimota, were prevented from writing their papers in the ongoing West Africa Senior Secondary Certification Examinations.

The confidence of these students were completely shattered when they were sacked by their invigilators that their hair and nails were overgrown.
The affected students became extremely angry and could not understand why the authorities would subject them to what they termed as ‘inhumane treatment’ albeit they have a few days to leave the four walls of the school.
The students explained that, they stood outside the examination hall with the hope that they would be called after thirty minutes to write the papers but the authorities refused to allow them write the exams.

Niger Delta University ‘Lesbian’ cultists drug, brutalize 'born-again' 17-yr-old for refusing initiation

Suspected female cultists at the Niger Delta University brutalized a teenage student, allegedly because she refused to join their lesbian cult. They have been caught.

A 17-year-old student of the Niger Delta University (NDU) is recuperating after suspected female student-cultists attacked her for allegedly refusing to join their cult.

According to a Leadership report, the unnamed victim, a student of the institution's Economics Department, was attacked in her room at Hostel “F” of the institution around 4am last Tuesday.

She is rumoured to have become a target due to her strict Christian ways and refusal to accept their invitation to join the cult, alleged to be notorious for lesbianism and other vices.

A final year student of the Education Department, identified as Annabela, was said to have led the attack.

They allegedly injected their victim with an unidentified substance and subjected her to severe torture.
A source who identified herself asClairespoke toLeadershipabout the attack.

“She was tied to a chair and severely beaten by four girls. Her hair attachment was forceful removed and she was injected with substances that made her behave in a crazy manner for days," she said.

"When the attackers saw that the girl had fainted, they brought her out of the room in the early hours of morning, and they were apprehended.”

NDU'sStudents’ Senate Disciplinary Committeehas begun investigation into the incident and is expected to present its finding to the institution’s authorities.

ASUU has urged the Governing Council of the Lagos State University to reopen the institution and end the 'illegal' "election recess" imposed by embattled VC Obafunwa before the general elections.

Nearly one month after theLagos State University(LASU) was shut down for what the institution called "election recess", the local chapter of the chapter ofAcademic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) has called for the resumption of activities.

The union appealed to the institution’s Governing Council to direct the reopening.
Embattled Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof.John Obafunwa, had called for the “election recess” in a statement, asking students to vacate the university with immediate effect until a contrary announcement is made.
The elections have been concluded for over a week and no official resumption date has been announced.

In a related development, ASUU-LASU chairman, Dr.Adekunle Idris, has insisted that the vote of no confidence passed by the congress against the Vice Chancellor remains effective.
Idris, who went into hiding early April after alleging that the institution’s management plans to attack him with student cultists, advised parents to monitor their children and ensure that they are not used to ferment trouble.
Idris noted that the "election recess" aborted academic activities without Senate approval and is thus illegal in a university system, especially as all other universities in the country remained in session.

On her way from the airport last week with a barrister friend, they picked up some students at the university main campus gate.

Things suddenly changed from what looked like an happy ride home after a trailer rammed into their Honda car. The pressure of the hit was as such that their car ran into another moving vehicle.
Despite the wrecked car, Fareedah and other passengers fortunately survived with various degrees of injuries.

Fareedah has since then been recovering from the shock as she hopes to be strong again before school resumes and also to go by her daily business which is what she's renowned for.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it is ready to partner with corporate organisations to empower youths with entrepreneurship skills.

The NYSC Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, made the assertion on Friday, April 17, in Ilorin at the opening of a training programme for its Venture Managers.
Olawumi, represented by the Director, Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneur Services, Mrs Mary Dan Abia, said the NYSC in partnership with IITA had cultivated 20 hectares of hybrid cassava varieties at Leleyi-Kwali, FCT.

The director-general also said that NYSC was collaborating with the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation, Idofian, on the development of agricultural equipment.
"We are developing a new one with Fadama III project, all to ginger our youths to appreciate farming as a worthy profession,"’ Olawumi added.
He said that the NYSC farm settlement in Kwali would be expanded to 70 hectares for the cultivation of cassava.
Olawumi added that the NYSC rice mill in Ebonyi would as from the 2015 orientation programme sell the commodity to neighbouring NYSC camps at subsidised prices.

He also said the NYSC Garri factory in Afon, Kwara, would be upgraded and equipped to meet the demand of the people in the area and beyond.
He said that the department was established in 2012 to resuscitate moribund projects such as NYSC farms and establish new projects.
The director also said the department was to serve as training platform where corps members could acquire skills for self-reliance and develop business models for young entrepreneurs.
Adeniran further said that the unit had been providing support services for the scheme through supply of food stuff and kits during orientation courses.

He added that the venture department was mandated to contribute to the national food security programme of the Federal Government and enhance rural economic development.
Adeniran listed NYSC business enterprises under the department to include NYSC Garment Factories in Minna, Niger State and Mgbakwu, Anambra, NYSC Rice Mill, Ezillo, Ebonyi and NYSC Feed Mill, Ipaja, Lagos State.
Others are NYSC Garri factory at Afon in Kwara, NYSC Table Water factory and Bakery at NYSC orientation camp, FCT and NYSC National Band, Abuja.
In his remarks, Kwara Coordinator of NYSC, Mr Abiodun Amusa, commended the director-general for resuscitating the NYSC ventures.

The coordinator appealed to venture managers to put in their best and work extra hours to achieve the objective of the programme.
He also appealed to the director-general to give the managers necessary incentives to enable them to achieve the set objectives.

NANS gives South African government 7 days ultimatum to stop xenophobic attacks

Abuja - The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has given the South African Government seven days ultimatum to stop the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other Africans resident in that country.
This ultimatum is conveyed in a statement issued by the association and made available to the media in Abuja on Saturday.
The statement, signed by Nwankwo Ezekiel, NAN’s Public Relations Officer, warned that South African investments and citizens in Nigeria would face reprisal attacks if the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and their businesses were not stopped.
"NANS condemns the sudden surge of attacks and deaths of our brothers and sisters and loss of their properties in South Africa as a result of xenophobia attacks."

"It is with deep sense of sadness and brotherhood that we are urging the South African Government to ensure an urgent solution and bring to an end attacks on our own citizens and their businesses within the next seven days."

"We will not stop at this but will go further and make all South Africa citizens residing in our country uncomfortable", it said.
It added that South Africa and Nigeria were being looked up to by the world to lead Africa to greatness, adding that xenophobic attacks were an embarrassment to the entire continent.

Muhammudu Buhari President-elect urged to abolish Government foreign scholarships

The Commonwealth Youth Council chairperson, Ahmed Adamu, has urged Nigeria’s president elect, Muhammudu Buhari, to abolish foreign scholarships in country when he assumes office May 29.

According to Adamu who holds a PhD in economics, close to N100 billion is spent on foreign scholarships annually by Nigerian government which he claimed has caused over supply of Nigerian currency, triggering the continue decline of the value of the Nigerian Naira.

“This figure is extremely higher when adding the cost of other self-sponsored foreign education and I am using this medium to call on the Nigerian president elect to consider this as one of the immediate policy he will adopt in the first 100 days in office”.

He, in a statement issued on
Saturday from London said Nigerians and other internationals studying in UK contribute 2.3% to the GDP growth in UK and their patronages contribute 2.6% to the overall UK employment and maintained that the funds injected into foreign economies should be invested in Nigeria.

“How different are foreign Universities are from Nigerian Universities, you will talk about access to energy, IT, resources, facilities, conducive atmosphere, and efficiency. All these can be provided in all Nigerian Universities with the savings that will eventuate from abolishing foreign scholarships. If you divide N100 billion by the number of federal universities, you will see that each university will get N2.5 billion a year”.
He held that Nigerian universities can perform to the international standard if for five years N2.5 billion is injected in them annually and that those who were already trained abroad can teach in Nigerian universities.
The economist also said Buhari must cut down government expenditure by 50% in one year, increase bank rate and taxes and the extravagance and wastages during the political campaign had caused unnecessary inflation in Nigeria, which he claimed is now at 8.6% from 7.9% in November.
“The money in circulation must be controlled. It is commendable that the president-elect has proposed to reduce government overheads by proposing to scrap unnecessary political appointments.
“All the money saved from the austerity measures should be invested in manufacturing and industrial sectors as well as education, science and technology. Small skills labourers should have a coordinated wage system, so that cost of production can be predicted, and small skill labourers who contribute immensely to the economic growth will not be underpaid” he stated.

Woman withdraws 6-yr-old daughter from school because alleged sexual assault by another pupil

A mother has removed her six-year-old daughter from a primary school after she was allegedly sexually assaulted by a boy of the same age.

The girl was allegedly abused by the young pupil both in the playground and at the classroom of the school in Blackburn, Lancashire.
But the girl’s mother has criticised school bosses for an apparent lack of action, and says that they made her daughter ‘feel like she was in the wrong.’
Although police have confirmed that they received a report of the issue, they are effectively powerless – as the age of criminal responsibility in England is 10 years old.
Instead, Blackburn with Darwen Council are now working to support those involved with the allegations.

But the girl’s mum said there needed to be a change in law, as children were become increasingly ‘sexualised at a younger age’.
‘I informed the school and social services straight away, and rang the police’, she said.
‘I had to keep her off school because the school said it was appropriate for the boy to remain in classes.

‘They said they needed to speak to the boy’s parents and find out his side of the story.
‘My daughter didn’t really understand how bad it was. It has left her feeling very vulnerable. The way the school has acted makes her feel like she was in the wrong’.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police has confirmed that they received a report of sexual assault from the girl’s mother.

Garissa Univeristy Attack Croatian students organise flash mob in honour of Garissa victims

In honour of the 147 students killed in the terror attacks on the Garissa University Campus, Zagred University students organised a flash mob in their honour.

Zagreb University in Croatia students took time out of their classes to pay tribute to the students who lost lives in Garissa. The students all lay on the ground each with a number representing the 147 students who were killed in Garissa terror attack. The students remained moot on the ground for 147 seconds.
The attacks happened while students were in school and they are believed to be carried out by gunmen associated with the Somali terrorist group, Al-Shabaab.
Suspects have been arrested have appeared in court.

Mohammed Ibrahim is one of such. He has spent his whole life around the subject-studying it, teaching it, and teaching people studying to teach it. In this interview, the President of the Mathematics Association of Nigeria gives insights into why students fail mathematics.
Tell us about the Mathematics association of Nigeria?

It was established over 53years ago in Nigeria with branches across the thirty-six states of the federation and FCT. M.A.N boasts of over a hundred thousand active members nationwide being the oldest of Mathematical bodies across the nation.

Many students see Mathematics as a difficult subject, as a result, the mass failure of the subject in WASSCE, NECO, UTME and other qualifying examinations. Why do you think this is, and what can be done to improve the situation?

Mass failure of students in Mathematics may be attributed to many factors which can be categorised under two sub-headings namely; Teachers’ influence and Students’ mentality. Teachers’ influence in mass failure of Mathematics can result from poor teaching techniques, inability to make the subject practicable and simple, poor knowledge of the course and so on. Student’s however contributed immensely to mass failure of Mathematics due to apathy or hatred for the subject; Laziness/Lazy attitude to studying the subject; Seeing the subject as abstract or non-practicable; Working in isolation or neglecting group studies; Having a negative attitude towards the subject or the teacher; Lack of textbooks/teaching materials among others. The mass failure can be eradicated if the following measures amongst others can be taken by updating the teacher on new teaching techniques of the subject; equipping the library with recent and updated textbooks; making the learning environment conducive for both the teacher and the students/pupils; and making the learning of the subject practicable for the pupils to admire it.

Apart from some students’ apathy towards the subject, what other challenges are facing Mathematics in Nigeria?
Other challenges facing Mathematics education in Nigeria are the lack of qualified teachers, poor learning environments, lack of teaching materials/textbooks and small scale Mathematics competition among students.
Why is Mathematics important for every student?
Mathematics is important for every student because it is the bedrock of other subjects. Another thing to note is that adequate knowledge in Mathematics boosts reasoning faculty of students. Knowledge of Mathematics helps students to understand their environments better through thorough analysis of the existing fact.
These challenges can be surmounted by upgrading the standard of education through equipping each school with necessary textbooks, employing competent teachers for the subject and providing adequate infrastructural facilities for schools. Another area to be looked into is that of providing competitive platform for students to rub minds and grow; just like the Mathematics competitions I mentioned earlier. Improving the welfare of Mathematics teachers and giving scholarship to the best Mathematics students’ at all levels- primary, secondary and tertiary will serve an incentive for students to strive to do better.

We have our 52nd annual conference coming up between August 30 and September 1, this year. It is holding at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, UNEC. The conference is themed: ‘Mathematics as a tool for research, governance and service to humanity.
