ASUU Warns Of Imminent Crisis, Kicks Against The Scrapping Of Post-UTME

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has disclosed that the nation’s universities may soon experience crisis if the federal government fails to begin the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement, especially the NEEDS assessment agreement.
The Union equally demanded that the federal government reverse the ban on post-UTME as well as the exclusive right granted to JAMB to admit students into tertiary institutions.
The ASUU president, Biodun Ogunyemi made this known while addressing new men yesterday in Abuja.
According to him, the scrapping of Post-UTME and the position of the Federal government on the issue portends serious danger for the quality of education in this country.
He emphasized that since the introduction of Post-UTME, there has been improvement in the quality of students admitted into the universities as evident in the declining drop-out rate and urged the federal government to reconsider its decision and convene a stakeholders meeting before making any policy.

NOUN To Launch Tablet, I-NOUN.

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is to launch an electronic instructional tablet, called I-NOUN.
The institution, in a statement in Abuja yesterday, said the I-NOUN tablet would help solve the endemic challenges of shortage of study materials in the university.
NOUN’s Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdalla Adamu spoke during a visit to the Chancellor, Igwe Lawrence Chikezie Agubuzu, in his palace at Awene Ezeama-Olo in Ezeagu Local Government of Enugu State.
Adamu said the gadget would solve the challenge of study material shortages and slash fees in the university, while enhancing update of the study materials.
Adamu said: “The I-NOUN tablet, which would be made available to students, will have all study materials needed by students of the university uploaded in it and would be updated regularly to foreclose the possibility of those study materials getting obsolete.”
He hailed the former VC, Prof. Vincent Tenebe, for taking NOUN from an evolutionary university to a revolutionary university.
The NOUN VC said having granted tuition-free tertiary education to inmates of prisons, his next move would be to launch what he called Diaspora NOUN.
According to him, the initiative is attracting interest in Ghana, Benin Republic and Liberia, adding that it was conceived to generate access to tertiary education for Nigerians in other countries.
Igwe Agubuzu described Prof. Adamu as eminently qualified for his job.
The royal father, who chairs Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, pledged to cooperate with Adamu.
“When I read through his extra-ordinary curriculum vitae, I knew that Mr. President made the right choice and he is eminently qualified to manage this great university.”

Sex With A Married Woman Lands Corper In Trouble In Abuja

Some guys will just be using their hands to destroy their life out of greed. Why a married woman?

A National Youth Service Corps member named Bonaventure Okeke, has been arraigned in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja for allegedly sleeping with a married woman, for several days.
Okeke, who resides in Jahi 2 Market area of Abuja, was arraigned on a one-count charge of adultery with a married woman, identified as Chinenye Anozie. He appeared in court on Monday.
The adulterous wife's husband, Emeka Anozie of Hayingada Saminaka, Kaduna State, made a direct criminal complaint to the court against the Corper on March 24, by his counsel, Obioma Achilefu.
He said the Corper, knowing that he is legally married to Chinenye, committed adultery with her.
He said the defendant was confronted on the issue over the cell phone and he confessed to have had s*x with Chinenye "only once".

The husband warned the defendant to stay away from his wife, but his warnings fell on deaf ears. He added that Corper Okeke on August 18, 2015 went ahead to send transport to his wife, Chinenye, who was schooling in Anambara State, to visit him at his residence and she did.
He said the Corper kept a married woman, Chinenye, in his house from August 18 to August 28.
He said the defendant continued to commit adultery with Chinenye in spite his warnings, adding that the effect of the act is “beyond measure”.
The offence contravened Section 387 of the Penal Code Cap 89 Laws of Northern Nigeria, 1963.
The defendant pleaded not guilty.
According to Eagle Reports, the judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, admitted Corper Okeke to bail. But he must provide a bond of N100,000 and one surety in like sum or remain in prison for his trial.
The trial will commence on August 30, 2016.

JAMB Admission Posting Is not The Same as Admission List – JAMB Boss

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB admission postingis not the same as admission list. It’s just a list forwarded to various tertiary institutions.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says the recent lists forwarded to various tertiary institutions was for candidates that qualified for screening based on institutions’ capacity.
The board’s Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, made the clarification on Sunday Lagos in a statement. According to the statement, they are in no way the admission lists.
Ojerinde said, “The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board wishes to state that the latest list of candidates sent to all the tertiary institutions contains candidates who qualified for screening based on the individual institution’s capacity. It’s not in any way an admission list.
“However, if this list is not sufficient for the need of any institution, such institution can source from the omnibus printout earlier sent to them by the board. The public and all tertiary institutions should note that admission will only be approved by the board after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions.
“The list, which is made up of candidates, who met the national cut-off point within the set criteria, is sent to the institutions. Again, for purposes of clarity, all institutions that have need for more can source from their omnibus printout as stated above. The candid intention of the board is to ensure that available spaces are adequately utilised.”

We Are Not Ready To Adopt CBT Now- WAEC

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has disclosed that it will not adopt the computer-based test (CBT) in the conduct of its examination.
This was made known by the Zonal Coordinator of the examination body in Abuja, Yusuf Ari.
According to him, despite the fact that CBT has proven to reduce examination malpractice, the board will still stick to the old method because of the nature of its examination.
He mentioned that the council does not only conduct examination in urban area but also rural areas unlike JAMB. Again, the council conducts examination in over 80 subjects with many of them having components. English Language for instance, comes in three components, consisting of practical, theory and oral.
He however added that the council may consider the option after adequate facilities such as sufficient computer systems, steady power supply and other infrastructural provisions are guaranteed.

The Federal Ministry of Education has reiterated that the admission of candidates into tertiary institutions in the country remains the responsibility of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The Ministry equally disclosed that institutions have power only to screen candidates sent to it by JAMB in order to fish out those with anti-social traits and suspicious credentials and that no university is allowed to have anything to do with any applicant who is not its student.

NANS Rejects Newly Introduced Post UTME Screening Fee [N2,500]

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) rejects in its entirety the introduction of N2,500 as admission screeningfee by the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Education.
Mr Gbenga Ayenuro, the NANS Vice President, said this in a statement made available to newsmen in Akure on Friday.
According to him, it is surprising, appalling, anti-masses and unethical, for the federal government to submit to pressure from the heads of tertiary institutions by introducing the post-UTME screening fee.
Ayenuro said that NANS viewed the introduction of the post-UTME screening fee as another way of extorting and exploiting potential students.
He alleged that it was another avenue of enriching management of various tertiary institutions across the length and breadth of Nigeria.
Ayenuro therefore issued a three-working day ultimatum to the ministry to reverse its decision on imposition of post-UTME screening fee as the most important stakeholder in the Nigerian education sector.
He said that failure to reverse the new policy would result in a peaceful protest at the Ministry of Education, Abuja, at a date to be announced.

Saturday, 9 July 2016

The Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU) through its Secretary-General, Prof. Michael Faborode, has denied reports credited to the association that the Federal Ministry of Education and other stakeholders in the tertiary education sub-sector have agreed on N2,500 as fee for post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (post-UTME) screening.
According to him, it is not the duty of the association to make such pronouncement but that of the Ministry of Education.
He further stated that the whole story exhibits poor reportage, contains half-truth and conjectures, and represents very poor translation of the proper content of a written information as there was no way it was stated in the statement released by the association that Post-UTME is now N2,500 or that CBT has been scrapped.

The Way JAMB Should Conduct Admission Exercise Into Tertiary Institutions

I came across this interesting piece on one of the popular forums and think it will be of interest to Myschoolers. Please read and share your opinion;
"It’s really sad that after 38 years of setting up the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB), she’s still on the quest to getting it right. It hurts when I see bright minds deprived of the opportunity to further their education largely due to the incompetence of the examination body. A question always pop into my mind: “Can’t we just scrap this system?”
Here is my view of what I feel should be the way forward
JAMB really needs to look beyond conducting examination. She should serve more as a portal that connects the students with the tertiary institutions. What do I mean by this, students should only register through JAMB having meet up with the requirements laid down by the body and their credentials should be forwarded to the institutions for the admission process
The system should be done in such a way that a candidate can only choose a max. of 5 institutions. The payment method should also be a factor of the number of schools chose. The minimum could be 2 institution costing N4,000 flat. An addition of extra school determines how much you eventually pay. E.g. For every extra school pick, you pay an addition of 1,000 to the 4,000 flat.
Access the website, fill up the number of institutions interested, print out the transcript, go to the nearest bank to pay, collect your pin and finally logon to begin your application. This will reduce the cost of printing scratch card which does not even sale for the exact amount in some part of the country. Some agents go the length of adding extra N300 before purchasing the card from them.
Once the application is closed for the year, JAMB should then sit down and process the various entries. A centralized timetable will then be designed for the conduct of the exam. Candidate who chose UI and other schools for example might take the other school’s (UniZik, FUTMINNA, IMSU and AAUA) exam first before taking that of UI’s depending on the calendar drafted. If a candidate who chose UNIBEN logon for the exam, he would be redirected to UNIBEN’s question which was set by the school herself.
This means JAMB technically have no question but serve as a middleman between the school and the candidate. This is where University standard come in to play. OAU’s questions might be more challenging compared to University of Uyo and students who wishes to attend OAU have to prepare very well.
After the examination, either the school/JAMB can mark (objectives) depending on the agreement reached and the result is then forwarded to the institutions. The result will then determine the cut-off mark to be used by the institution.
If for example, a candidate made it in to 3 of the 5 schools selected, he has the period of a month to accept just one of it creating vacuum for another potential candidate at the school he rejected.
This will balance the population across the institutions in Nigeria."
I think this is really cool. What do you think about his idea?
