Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK notice to graduands as regards the forthcoming convocation ceremonies.
Important information to all 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 Graduands of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, as regards hiring/purchasing of academic gowns and mode of payments.
Graduands are please requested to note the following.
i. It is mandatory for all Graduands to pay for the following items irrespective of attendance to the Convocation Ceremony.
a) Order of Proceedings
B-) Academic Outfits
c) Certificate Scrolls
d) UNIZIK Handbook
e) UNIZIK T shirt and cap
CONVOCATION FEES
First Degree – N8,000.00
Masters Degree and Postgraduate Diploma – N12,000.00
Ph.D. – if the Graduand wants to purchase the academic gown (including all the above items) as listed in (a-e) – N40,000.00
Ph.D. – If the Graduand wants to hire academic gown (including the above items as listed in a-e) above – N20,000.00
I. All Graduands are expected to dress in full appropriate wear (i.e. suit, shirt and tie for men and Skirt suit/skirt and blouse or gown for Ladies) or full national dress.
II. Academic outfits for all first Degree Graduands will be collected at the Faculties
III. Academic outfits/materials for Higher Degrees will be collected at the School of Postgraduate Studies
IV. Graduands must present evidence of payment before they can collect Convocation materials
V. Collection of Convocation materials commences on Monday, 14th March, 2016
VI. All hired academic outfits/gowns should be returned by the Graduands to their respective collection points not later than Wednesday, March 23, 2016. Gowns returned after that date will attract penalty.
VII.All Graduands are to assemble at the School of Postgraduate Studies (Opposite the Convocation Arena) by 9.00 am for the commencement of Procession each day
VIII.It is compulsory for all Graduands to participate in the academic procession and to put on the approved academic regalia.

All payments to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka should be made through the following procedure:
• Log into Remita.net
• Click on pay a Federal government Agency
• Under the name of MDA type Nnamdi Azikiwe University
• Click on Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka
• Go to name of Service purpose and click on box
• Select Convocation fees, fill out the required information
• Print out or copy the Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) number
• Take this RRR number to any bank of your choice and make payment
• Payment will begin on Monday, 7th March 2016.
SECURITY NOTICE
1. Luggages and bags will not be allowed into the Convocation Arena.
2. Parking lots are designated and can only be used on presentation of parking card and invitation card
3. University Security Personnel and other Security Agencies will direct all vehicles to the designated parking lots.
4. No form of hawking of any item will be allowed near the Convocation Arena.

Ekiti State University, EKSU matriculation ceremony schedule for the 2015/2016 academic session new students.
Authority of Ekiti State University (EKSU) hereby wishes to inform the newly admitted students, their sponsors/parents, well wishers as well as members of the general public that the Matriculation Ceremony of the university meant to officially usher in the new students of the university for the 2015/2016 academic session has been scheduled for Friday, 11thMarch, 2016.
The ceremony will hold at 10 o’clock in the morning inside the Main Auditorium of the university.

On Monday, 29th of February, three female students of theBabington Macaulay ‎Junior Seminary School, a private school in Ikorodu, Lagos wereabducted by a group of gunmen.

Since then, negotiations with the kidnappers has been ongoing with the aim of getting the girls back safely.

According to Vanguard, the ransom demanded by the abductors was reduced to N10 million by the kidnappers, while the school was pleading with N2 million.

An accord on their release was reportedly reached between the negotiating parties at the early hours of yesterday. But at 5p.m., there was reportedly no news from the kidnappers on where the students would be picked, owing to disagreement over ransom.

Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly,Mudashiru Obasa, has reacted to this ordeal, saying there was need for the creation of state police. Other members also took turns to condemn the incident, saying if Federal Government allows creation of state police, crimes will be minimised.

The Lagos State chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday also called for the immediate release of the three kidnapped students.

The party, through the Publicity Secretary, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, condemned the kidnap, describing it as callous and inhuman, carried out by criminals who wanted to test the resolve of the present state government to drastically reduce criminality in the state.

The traditional head of the area where the school is located, Baale of Lugbusi,Chief Michael Omolojuhas also said “the school needs a better and effective security.

“They should employ security officials to man the place on a 24-hour basis. We have called on our subjects to be vigilant and report any strange movement to government," he added.

51 students bag first class in UNIOSUN

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of University of Osun, Professor Oguntola Alamu, on Friday, said that the university was set to graduate 3,164 students at its fourth and fifth convocation ceremony, which would hold on the 8th of March, 2016
Alamu disclosed this in Osogbo while briefing journalists on the forth-coming convocation ceremony.
He explained that the total of 3,164 students from six faculties, for the 2013/2014, and 2014/2015 academic sessions would be convocated.
According to him, while 27 students bagged a first class honour for the 2013/2014 session, 24 students had first class in the 2014/2015 academic session, making a total of 51 first class students.
Alamu said: “the citadel in its tradition of excellence in teaching and character modelling had been able to produce intellectuals that were making wave all over the world. We remained focused, and committed to full implementation and evaluation of the University 2012-2016 Strategic plan.
“Since the last convocation ceremony in 2014, Osun State University has continued to make progress in teaching, research, community service, physical and infrastructural development. The 2014/2015 academic session witnessed the resuscitation of Entrepreneurial Training for the final year students, in line with the mission of the university.
“I am delighted to inform you that most of the graduands will be collecting two certificates by the end of this ceremony- Bachelor’s degree certificate and the Entrepreneurship skill set certificate,” Alamu added.

How To Check JAMB 2016 Result Without a Scratch Card

This is to inform all candidates who duly registered and participated in the ongoing 2016 Computer Based Test (CBT) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) that they can check results without scratch card.

The results of the 2016 Computer Based Test (CBT) result has been release and have been fully uploaded on JAMB portal. The jamb result checker 2016 website will have the complete lists of all candidates who participated in the 2016 UTME CBT examination.

The result is sent to candidates via SMS at the end of the day’s exam. JAMB candidates who provided correct phone numbers during registration will get their results.

Candidates can as well check the 2016 JAMB Results for FREE without the required e-Bundle PIN using JAMB e-Facility Apps.

Follow the steps below to check JAMB Result without a Scratch card;

i) For Android Users: Simply browse to Google play store on your android mobile phones, then download the JAMB Mobile Services e-Facility and check your Result.

ii) For Windows Mobile Users: Open the Windows App Store on your device. Search for and install the JAMB Mobile Services e-Facility, then check your Result with it.

Breaking News: Senate Reduces UTME Registration Fee To N2,500h

Report reaching us has it that the Senate has reduce the registration fee of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to N2,500 from N5,650 that was paid by applicants who had registered in this year Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

At the plenary session today, the senators also extended JAMB entrance examination validity period to three years from one year..

The Senate adopted the recommendation of its committee that JAMB fee should not exceed N2,500, while institution and course forms and all other incidental activities around the examination should be free.

Henceforth, Candidates who intend to register for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) can obtain JAMB application forms for N2,500

Unilag’s Daniel Dada Ayodele Who Graduated With 5.0 CGPA Get’s Rewarded With N500, 000 and Other Prizes

Last week, social media was lit after the news of Daniel Dada Ayodele, a graduate of Psychology, became the first UNILAG student to graduate with a 5.0 CGPA, and yesterday, the star stole all attention at the University’s 2014/2015 Convocation ceremony.
The school’s top academics showered the Ekiti State-born graduate with praises, and they include Prof. Jerry Gana; Vice-Chancellor, Prof.
Rahamon Bello, and the President of the institution’s alumni association, Dr. Sunny Kuku.
While eulogizing Dada, Dr Sunny Kuku pledged to give him N500, 000 on behalf of the alumni association.
Other graduating students hailed Dada, called him a ‘genius’, an accolade he refused to accept.
“I do not have to be a genius to get the results of a genius,” Dada said.
“I believe every one can achieve whatever they want to achieve in life. The best way to serve God is through excellence in whatever we do,” he said.
“However, we all cannot be doctors, engineers, pharmacists, among others. So to my colleagues, I urge them to remain steadfast in their various undertakings in life.”
And Dada received other prizes at the convocation ceremony which include the Vice-
Chancellor’s Prize, Dean’s Prize, UNILAG Parent Forum Prize, Tony Elumelu Legacy Prize, the UNILAG Alumni Association Prize, the late Eni Njoku Academic Prize, Prof. Tolu Odugbemi Prize and the late Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe Prize.

MAPOLY Postpones Payment Deadline For 2015/2016

The Management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, having taken a cursory look at the 2015/2016 Admission and Registration processes, approved the extension of the deadline for registration for first semester 2015/2016 session by one week.
The new deadline, which is Monday, 29th February, 2016 will not be further extended, as between midnight of Monday, 29th February, and Monday, 7th March, 2016, a penalty fee of Five Thousand Naira (N5,000.00) only will apply to affected students.
In the same vein, from midnight Monday, 7th March, 2016 to Monday, 14th March, 2016, a penalty fee of Ten Thousand Naira (N10,000.00) only will be applicable to students whose registrations have not seen completed until then.
However, registration for the semester shall close finally by midnight of Monday, 14th March, 2016. Any student who fails to complete his/her registration before the 14th March, 2016 deadline will forfeit his/her studentship of the Institution.
Students should recall that the Institution’s Management had earlier approved the ratio 60:40% part-payment of school fees cutting across all categories of students.

No More N5000 Stipend For Unemployed Youths - Buhari Clears the Air

The President has finally cleared the air concerning the controversial N5000 stipend his party had earlier promised unemployed youths in their campaign manifesto.
In what appears to be a major U-turn from what his campaign promises before the 2015 presidential election, president Mohammadu Buhari has said he would not pay the N5000 stipend he promised to unemployed youth in the country.
The president made the remarks at the weekend while on the visit in Middle East. He said it was wise to use a collation of the funds to put up infrastructures and empower them through agriculture for than to give out monies.
He said:-
“This largesse N5,000 for the unemployed, I have got a slightly different priority. I would rather do the infrastructure, the school and correct them and empower agriculture, mining so that every able bodied person can go and get work instead of giving 5,000, N5,000 to those who don’t work.”
It will be recalled that All Progressives Congress, APC had during its campaign supported the promise of paying N5,000 as monthly stipend to the most vulnerable in the country.

GThe Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) wish to inform all 2016 UTME candidates who initiated the process of registration but could not upload and complete it as at Feb. 5 could do so within 48 hours starting from 12 midnight of Tuesday, Feb. 23.

This was promulgated by the board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin and issued on Tuesday in Lagos.

According to the statement, the website will be opened to such candidates till 12 midnight of Thursday Feb.25 when it will be be finally closed.

“The board wishes to state that the directive does not cover fresh registration but only those who had either done offline registration or visited our website but could not submit.

“The board wishes to state that all arrangements for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have been concluded and examination will commence as earlier slated.

“Candidates are also urged to print their examination slips for the schedules of their date, venue and time allotted to them and other necessary information,” the statement said. (NAN)

Kwara Poly Student Shot Dead By Suspected Cult Members

Report reaching us confirmed that a National Diploma (ND) II student of Kwara state Polytechnic, Ilorin was on Monday evening shot death by suspected cultists.

9ja School Gist Team gathered that the victim was a suspected member of another rival cult group.
It was reported that the victim was shot at a far distance without any effect on him, a development that reportedly prompted the ‎assailants to chase and grab him and then fired several gun shots on his head to kill him and then ran away.

The security guards on duty were said to have quickly alerted the police who immediately came to the scene of the incident to carry the remains of the ND2 student away and deposit it at the mortuary of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital that same monday night.

The Registrar of the Polytechnic, Pastor Moses Salami, who confirmed the development, said that since the incident happened on Monday the men of the Nigeria Police and that of the Directorate of the State Security Service had been mounting surveillance on the campus to check likely reprisal attacks.

“It’s true that after the staff have closed for work on Monday around 7.30pm, we learnt that one ND2 student was shot dead and the police was immediately alerted.

“They arrived the scene of the incident and took his corpse away to University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Since then, the security agencies have been coming to our campus to investigate the incident”, he said.

Also, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kwara state, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the development, saying however that he was yet to be officially briefed.

“Yes, I heard that a student was killed in the Kwara state Polytechnic on Monday, but I’m yet to be officially briefed”.

UI Withdraws 97 Students Over Poor Performance

Authorities of University of Ibadan have withdrawn over 97 students of the institution for failure to obtain the minimum academic requirements at the end of the 2014/15 session.
According to the bulletin of the university, the withdrawal of the students, which has been approved by the Senate.
The affected students were from seven faculties in the institution. Some of the students were in final year.
The bulletin, which was signed by the Registrar, Olujimi Olukoya explained that three of the students voluntarily withdrew from the institution. It states, “Senate at its meeting approved that the candidates whose names appear on this list should withdraw from the University for failure to obtain the minimum academic requirements at the end of 2014/2015 session.”

The Nigerian communications Commission (NCC) has warned Nigerians that the cyberspace is not aan venue to promote hatred as there are laws guiding against such.
This was made known by Mr Tony Ojobo, the director of public affairs of the commission on Monday, February 22 during a discussion on what the new media has to do with cybercrime act.
The programme which was part of the week-long Social Media Week was geared towards examining the issue of cybercrime and how it affects the new media.
Ojobo who was part of the discussant explained that a lot of laws were available which internet users have failed to familiarize themselves with.
He noted that people misuse the cyberspace by making xenophobic, comments, hate speech which are contrary to what is allowed.
He cited an example that if a person receives contents that contained child pornography and shares with other persons using the internet; the person is likely to go to prison even though he did not produce the material.
Speaking with naij.com, The NCC public affairs director encouraged the use of the cyberspace with sense.
“Developed countries don’t want regulation of the internet but it is necessary in developing countries to prevent cyber-crimes.
Nigerians are not reading the law which is why media users, bloggers and journalist are sometimes sent to prison when they don’t get their facts right.”
Ojobo explained that the laws were not there to deny Nigerians their freedom of expression but to prevent people from inciting hatred.

WAEC to Commence CBT Examination Mode Soon

West African Examinations Council, WAEC perfecting plans to migrate into the Computer Based Test (CBT) mode for its examinations.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is considering migrating to the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode of examinations for it examinations, the Registrar disclosed in Lagos.

The Registrar of council, Dr Iyi Uwadiae, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, the council is considering all variables available to ensure that the entire process is not messed up.

He, however, noted that the council was not in a hurry to migrate because the council basically conducts achievement tests and not selection tests.

“We have looked at the issue of CBT and found that this is not a selection test, where one can deal with paper and pencil.

“With that, you can easily migrate to CBT, but for an achievement test where you train people to become engineers, medical doctors and others, there will be need for practical experience.

“So, they do not just train them practically in the class, they equally need to be tested on theory.

“Again this background, therefore, we are collaborating with other examination bodies and experts outside Nigeria to ensure that when we start, we will not mess up the entire process.

“And what is expected of the candidates can still be achieved,’’ he said.

Uwadiae noted that the council was being cautious in getting it done because there were many things involved.

“We are not in a hurry to move in there but with time, we are going to migrate into it and start with the objective tests.

“We have to still do the practical aspect because we want to be sure that all schools are on the same level.

“They must be on the same level in terms of learning and all other aspects so that we can be able to have confidence on the reliability of the continuous assessment and practicals, which their teachers will give us.

“For now, we cannot say what we get from these teachers are reliable as we insist on continuous assessment.

“We need to go to these schools and match them against any standard tests,’’ the registrar said.

On the persistent poor performance of candidates, Uwadiae said the issue was not peculiar to Nigeria alone.

He noted that effective teaching and learning were no longer taking place in schools, coupled with the issue of dearth of infrastructure.

According to him, students seldom stay in the classrooms; they spend more time on the internet and do not read and all that.

He explained that such students were not expected to perform miracles during examinations.

“We compare our standards with that of other examination bodies in Nigeria and internationally and so we cannot lower our standards.

“Our examinations are taken by candidates of five different countries and it is the same examination.

“We have our own internal mechanism, as well as a very functional research outfit.

“For every examination, we do a research to find out why candidates perform poorly and if after this, we still have some doubts, we do what is called post item analysis.

“Invariably we find out that our items are not bad.

“The teachers are the ones who set the questions, moderate and mark them; we only collate and release results as adjudged by the experts,’’ the council boss added. (NAN)

LASU students clash with touts - The Nation Nigeria

Students of the Lagos State University (LASU) yesterday clashed with motor park touts (Agbero) at Iyana-Iba, on Lagos-Badagrt Expressway. This is even as the LASU Students Union prepares to conduct the union election today.
The row, which had subsided as at the time of filing this report, allegedly triggered traffic snarl on Volkswagen/Okokomaiko and Iyana-Iba/Igando, leaving many motorists stranded for hours. Others were forced to trek long distances.
A worker in the varsity’s Physics Laboratory who pleaded for anonymity told our reporter that the agbero prevented buses branded in the students’union logo from operating yesterday owing to what the drivers of those vehicles consider as outrageous levies being charged by the agbero on daily basis. The case was reported to the students who in anger stormed the park to release the vehicles back to the drivers.
Mr Adekoya Ademola of the university’s information unit confirmed the incident, adding that no injury was recorded.
“It was just a little issue,”Ademola said.“The agbero stopped vehicles belonging to the students union and the students went back in anger. But as I’m talking with you, the scruple has subsided because the Ojo Divisional Police Officer (DPO) intervened and everything has been brought under control.”
“As regards the traffic snarl, there was an accident along Igando road yesterday and it was pretty serious but was unconnected to the issue.. This is what led to the traffic situation along that road and not that LASU students are demonstrating as it is being rumoured,”Ademola added.

9 Reasons JAMB Candidates Fail UTME Yearly

It is not an unknown fact that some Nigerian students after their JAMB examination will end up scoring zero over 400.
Two years ago when I wrote my first JAMB examination, I had this feeling that I was going to smash the exam with a high grade like at least 350 over 400 but finally I found myself scoring 192 over 400.
But I thanked Almighty Allah for making me among the lucky candidates that saw their results. Some of my colleagues didn’t even see their results and others scored 150 over 400 while others were even below that. So, from experience I will say nine of the reasons why we fail JAMB in this country are:
1:Fear:According to H.P. Lovecraft, Supernatural Horror in Literature: “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” Honestly I was afraid then, the fear of JAMB made me think I was going into a do or die affair.
I could also remember that the very day of the examination it took me about 10 minutes before I could even start shading some answers all because of fear of what the outcome of the exam might be. So I believe fear contributed to my failure. So my fellow students be bold, courageous and never think of failure in your JAMB examination. JAMB is just like any normal examination, even if very tricky.
2. JAMB syllabus:It might sound funny but believe me, JAMB follows some syllabus topics in setting their examination questions. My advice here is that you should adhere to JAMB syllabus because that is where their questions are coming from.
3.Power of JAMB past questions:My dear colleagues never neglect the power of past question papers. They reveal some tips and sample questions on what you will be facing in your examination. After the examination that day, some of my friends that wrote theirs about four years ago, told me that about 20 questions each came out from JAMB past questions. I was shocked but no second chance for an amendment.
4.Miracle centre believe it or not:This is an open confession, the fear of failing made me to get some A,B,C,D and E from a lady sitting beside me that very day. She registered in a miracle centre. I am very sure my score would have been better than 192 if I had not copied from that girl. After the examination, she showed me the answer her boyfriend sent to her but to my greatest surprise the English language paper type is A but mine is B. Unfortunately to me I carried my Use of English over, so BE CAREFUL.
5:Invigilators of nowadays:Invigilators in some centres usually frustrate students to pay or there will be no communication inside the examination hall. For instance I can remember that day, an invigilator was said to have asked to be paid N2,500 by each candidate to allow them share and communicate with each other but if you fail to pay automatically you will become No 1 Suspect in the hall. They will try anything possible to make you fail unless God saves you.
6:Late coming:Yes, I will advice you all to be at your centre one hour before the examination starts. Try as much as you can to be the first student at your centre. Coming late to any examination will make you feel that you have lost it all; not only lost but you will be disorganized.
7.Breakfast:Yes, we know that a hungry man is an angry man. Before leaving in the morning please take something; at least one cup of coffee or tea with bread will be nice to hold you. Sometimes, your exam will even start later than planned.
8.Long distance:The possibility of a student living in Nasarawa State (Doma) to meet up with an examination that will start around 9.00am in the FCT, Abuja, is just 40/100 because anything can happen. Some students will tell you that they will meet up but along the line, they will be held up along the way.
The question is: What if the car breaks down on the way? (I don’t pray for such). What if you don’t locate your centre before the exam starts? The only possible solution for this is just to be in the state/local/town/village where your centre is located a day before the examination date.
9.Randomized Questions:It is also important that candidates note that the questions generated for candidates are jumbled in such a way that they appear differently for each candidate.
For instance, your number 1 question may likely be different from that of your neighbour. That simply means if you choose "A" as your answer just because your neighbour says the answer is "A", you may have only succeeded in shooting your self in the foot as two of you may be answering different questions.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has rule out the possibility of extending its 2016 UTME registration deadline.


9ja School Gist recalls that hundreds of prospective applicants for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) staged a peaceful protests in Benin City, Edo State, demanding extension of the online sale of UTME forms that closed recently.
The protesters, who stormed the Benin secretariat of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), said they were unable to purchase the scratch card for the online registration due to the scarcity of the access cards.

The protesters consisted mainly of young school leavers and brandished placards with inscriptions such as, “JAMB Don’t Deny us Our Right to Education,” Extend Registration,” and “We Want Tertiary Education”.

In a statement issued by JAMB and signed by head media, JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, in Abuja, the examination body said though the board sympathised with the candidates, they were given about seven months to register, adding that the board needed to prepare for the examination that would start on February 29, 2016.

Some students, on Friday, in Edo and Lagos states protested against an alleged sudden closure of the JAMB online registration portal.

The statement read: “The attention of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has been drawn to the protest by some alleged UTME candidates in Benin and Lagos. The candidates were said to be protesting over the closure of the board’s registration portal in preparation for the 2016 examination which is due to begin in less than a week from today.
“The board sincerely sympathizes with the plight of these prospective candidates and states that it’s the wish of the board that Nigerian youths desirous of tertiary education are given ample opportunity to register for its examination. This was why it began the sale of its application document last August, that is about seven months ago.
“In the advertisement for the sale of the registration documents, the board clearly stated that the sales would close by January, but due to public appeal it extended the registration process to February.
“It’s imperative to disclose that the closure was also to allow the board to prepare adequately for the examination slated for the end of February. The board cannot allow candidates to register perpetually. It has a time table and it adheres strictly to it to allow the tertiary institutions begin the process of admission early. We all must work to enshrine the culture of discipline in the system.”
The board said it was quite unfortunate that some candidates waited until their website was withdrawn before making attempts to register.
“The scenario looks very suspicious, for a candidate who is billed to sit for an examination slated for February to suddenly appear in the same February protesting his inability to register less than a week to the examination when he knew that the registration was to close in the same month.
“Through this same process, over 1.5 million candidates have applied within this period and the board has made adequate preparation for them to sit for the 2016 exercise.

Hundreds of prospective applicants for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have staged a peaceful protests in Benin City, Edo State, demanding extension of the online sale of UTME forms that closed recently.
They urged the examination body to re-open its portal, lamenting that they could not afford to stay another year without securing an admission.
Some of the parents of the applicants in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria have also joined their wards to express their displeasure with the act.
They noted that they were upset with the closure of the registration portal, stressing that it has denied the applicants a chance to sit for the 2016 exams which will hold next weekend.
But in a swift reaction to the protest the south-south zonal Coordinator of JAMB, Mrs Priscila Ogunsola, dismissed the claims by the students, insisting that JAMB gave enough time for the registration.

Senator Ben Murray Bruce turned 60 yesterday, he took the opportunity to launch his book “The Common Sense Revolution” but it’s sad to see that the event in its totality portrays the average Nigerian Politician.
Usually, I hate to attend these so called “Big” events but it was Ben Bruce, the common sense guy, I jumped at the Opportunity to go with my department, department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos as we were invited with a letter and we were feeling all important.
We didn’t know it was an invitation to humiliation. At the venue, we were told to go upstairs, we didn’t mind, as they said that area was reserved for students. Getting there, I realized it was a perfect view to watch the “Elites” wine and dine. Still, we didn’t care.
We only began to care when the ceremony kept going on and all tables kept getting additional contents and we were just there, like Observers. Don’t forget that we were invited, as I said earlier. While all of that kept happening, I still didn’t care because they said every guest will get a free copy of the book.
I wanted the book so, I waited on. At the end, only the guests got the Book. I had to look at our invitation to be sure we were guests. Yes, we were guests but the stiff class stratification that Senator Bruce Criticizes came to play. It’s so sad to see that the actions of the Common Sense Guy justifies the “Common Sense is not so common” statement.
Since I know it’s all fake, I’d like to give a professional PR advice. It’s so bad, if you invite Nigerian Students, who will, to a large extent, determine your political success, to an event only for them to watch you and your rich friends dine. Their votes aren’t even enough.
Writing a book about Common Sense doesn’t actually make you have Common Sense. We aren’t hungry people. We are Unilag Students and we are contented with what we have, we wouldn’t go to shop 10 to sweet-talk anyone about common sense, just to get rice.

Federal College of Agriculture Varsity shutdown over violent protest

The students during the protest were demanding a reduction in their school fees and the suspension of the Nigeria Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) programme being organised for them by the college, among others.

 The authorities of theFederal College of Agriculture(FCA), Ibadan, on Thursday ordered the closure of the school over a violent protest by its students, the College’s Provost,Dr Babajide Adelekansaid.

Thestudents during the protestwere demanding a reduction in their school fees and the suspension of the Nigeria Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) programme being organised for them by the college, among others.
Adelekan told theNews Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Ibadan that the students had gone on rampage on Wednesday causing inconveniences to workers and members of the public.

“They blocked the gates leading into and out of the school and disturbed the environment.
“So, the authorities had to close the college till further notice to forestall a situation it will not be able to handle,” he said.

The provost said that the school fee was affordable for the students when compared to what was paid in other colleges of agriculture and polytechnics.
“Every returning student pays N33, 200 in a year, while each fresh student pays N51, 700 in a year; we afford them a bed space at N90 for a year per student.
“They do have water supply 24 hours, steady power supply and healthy environment for learning,” the provost said.

On the issue of NIIT programme, Adelekan said that the college agreed with the firm to teach the students computer studies and offer them international certificate apart from their normal certificates.

“The programme has been on for about three years now, students who passed through it have been grateful but all of a sudden some of them decided that they don’t want it again.
“And we want the best for them, to equip them in all ramification so that it will enhance their marketability in the job market,” he said.

The provost said that the collegewould reopen for academic activitiesafter all the students must have completed the payments of their school fees, stop their hooliganism and become remorseful.

Several phone calls and attempts to reach the Students’ Union Government President by NAN were abortive as he did not pick his calls up till the time of filing the report.

The federal government reportedly has no plans to rescind its decision on the dismissal of 13 vice chancellors appointed by ex presidentGoodluck Jonathan.
Minister of education,Mallam Adamu Adamu, reaffirmed the action at the flag off of the 2015/2016 annual school census in Abuja on Thursday, February 18.
Last weekend, the government announced thesacking of 13 Vice Chancellorsof newly established federal universities including VC ofNational Open Universities of Nigeria(NOUN),Prof. Vincent Tenebe.
When asked about the motive behind Tenebe's sack, the minister explained that the professor was removed because of the petitions against him.
Adamu was also asked if there is a possibility that the sacked VCs will be recalled.

He confirmed that this will not happen, saying, “Do you reverse government decision simply because somebody has criticized them? I don’t think there is any decision of government not going down well with everyone in the country.

Dollar scarcity: Parents of overseas students weep in banks

As dollar scarcity worsens in Nigeria, parents who have children schooling abroad have taken their frustrations to banks, with some of them weeping openly, asSaturday PUNCHobserved.
Investigations by our correspondents revealed that the frustrations by some parents who cannot access forex to send to their children abroad have brought out their emotional sides, while affected students have been crying out for help in foreign lands.
When one of our correspondents visited some banks along Muritala Muhammed Way, Unity Road and Taiwo Road in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Wednesday and Thursday, some bank customers, who were there to buy dollars, expressed disappointments at the scarcity of the currency.
One of the customers, Alhaja Salamatu Ajibola, who practically broke down in tears, lamented that the education of her two children schooling in the United States had been threatened by the development.
She added that her children had been going without food due to her inability to send them money for their upkeep.
Ajibola said that it had been difficult for her to send her children dollars for their personal and educational needs. She said she had visited one of the banks several times, hoping to send dollars to her children, only to be told that the currency was insufficient to meet customers’ demands.
Another tearful parent, who spoke toSaturday PUNCHon the condition of anonymity, in a first generation bank in Bauchi State, said it had become impossible for him to meet the financial needs of his children schooling abroad.
She said she was seeking other ways of sending money abroad due to the difficulty she was facing in getting dollars to send to her children.
“Our children abroad are crying and we parents are also crying,” she said.
“They are confused and we are also confused because we can’t send money to them and they can’t receive. They are in misery, hunger and depression.
“They can’t even feed well because they can’t get money for their upkeep.”
She, therefore, called on the government to “create an escape route so that children will not continue to suffer.”
Also, Mr. Jimoh Abdulganiyu, whose son is studying medicine in Ukraine, said he could not get dollars, even at the black market, to send to him.
Abdulganiyu said his son was given a warning letter by the school authorities over delay in payment of accommodation fees and he risks being asked to vacate the dormitory soon.
He expressed fears of the possibility of buying fake dollars because of the pressure of getting dollars, which has been pushing parents to the parallel market.
He said, “Sometimes, I would get to the bank by 6.40am, before the official opening hour, to stand a good chance of getting dollars through the Western Union or Money Gram.
“And this does not mean that I would automatically get the dollars, I still have to lobby before I could get it. Even at that, there is a limit to the amount I can get.”
One of our correspondents, who visited two commercial banks in the Sabo, Yaba area of Lagos on Thursday, observed that there were no dollars for sale. Sabo is a black market hub for forex activities in Lagos.
There, a 65-year-old man, Mr. Obafemi Solomon, who also expressed frustration with the situation, struggled to fight back tears as he narrated his ordeal.
Solomon said he was indebted to some of his friends in the United States, where his daughter was schooling.
Solomon said his friends had had to bail him out of the financial problem because he felt it was unwise to exchange naira for dollars at the present exchange rate.
He said, “What I am doing right now is to beg my friends who are in the US to help me pay for my daughter’s tuition. It does not make any sense to change naira for dollars and send to her. There is even no dollar to buy.”
A pensioner, Mr. Olu Ajibade, who resides in Ekiti, also shared his plight, saying things had not been this tough in the past four years that his son had been in Middlesex University, London.
Calling for the liberalisation of the foreign exchange market, Ajibade said, “Now we rely on the black market and the forex rate is very high. If you don’t go to them then you are left to face the bank and they have so many rules you have to oblige to before you can get money from them.
“You will have to fill so many forms, get a letter from the school and go through so many rigorous processes. With that, it is not even guaranteed that you would get money from them. Honestly, it is not easy at all. Unfortunately, there are no other alternatives. The black market that could have been an alternative is not properly funded. The truth is that if you want to buy £3,000 in the black market, they tell you that they don’t have more than £800. For instance, we needed to pay school fees of about £10,000 but all we could do was pay half because of the scarcity of foreign currency.”
A Nigerian student studying in a US university, Adebayo Kabiru, toldSaturday PUNCHthat he would have gone bankrupt if not for the menial jobs he was doing.
In a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, Kabiru said, “My parents have not been able to send me money since January. At a point, I got frustrated, but I had to do something. So now, I do some menial jobs to pay for my upkeep.”
Also, a student studying in Russia, who spoke withSaturday PUNCH,said she was about to be deported because her visa had expired and her parents could not send her money to renew it.
She said, “My father has been trying to send me money for the past two weeks for me to settle my visa problem and other things, but has been unable to do so. I am about to be deported and when that happens, I will lose the opportunity of rounding off my last session here in Russia.”
Simon Uwem, a student studying for his Master’s degree at a university in Indiana, US, revealed that Nigerian students abroad have been having rough times.
He said, “I have been able to survive because I have a research position in school and I get paid very well. I was hired by the school for the job. The truth is that if you are intelligent, you will survive.
“But it has been so tough for some students here. Asking your parents for $1,000 means they need to look for N400,000. Some students don’t even get to hear from their parents any longer. They have resorted to doing menial jobs or marrying Akata (American citizens) here.
“A professor recently spoke to me about getting more foreign students from Africa and I told him that finance had become a challenge even if such students get scholarships. A textbook here costs up to $200. It has been quite tough.”

Trouble for Candidates as JAMB Site Crashes over exam slip Re-print for 2016

It's so unfortunate that we have been pushed to making this publication, following frustration and inability to help students re-print their JAMB exam slip for UTME exams, slated to begin on 27th Feb, 2016.
Our question now is, if this slow and, at times, total crash of JAMB site persists at this time, how possible will it be for all candidates to re-print their exam slips before 27th Feb.
The sad fact remains that this sort of issues are experienced every year, yet, the board does nothing to help the situation. Every Year!
We are therefore calling on the appropriate authorities to look into this issue and fix the portal to enable students get the relevant information needed before the exam. After all, it's the same JAMB that informed all students to re-print their slips as from 18th Feb, so they should have been expecting such outcome.

UNIZIK 1st Semester Exam Commencement Date – 2015/16

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK first semester, 2015/2016 academic session examination will commence on March 21, 2016.
This is to announce to all the students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) and the university community that the first semester examination for the 2015/2016 academic session commencement date has been shifted.

Due to the upcoming research exhibition to be attended by over 50 fifty universities which will be hosted by UNIZIK starting from 7th March; also due to the Convocation ceremonies which will hold between 14th and 18th March, the University Committee of Deans chaired by the Vice Chancellor Prof. J. E. Ahaneku, FAS deliberated and moved the examination to March 21, 2016.
This means that all students both old and new will begin this examination on the same date. The time table for the exam will be displayed in the Faculties and Departments.
All students are advised to study hard to pass as there is no more time for any form of merrymaking.

FUTA Adopts E-Voting for the 2016 Students Union Election

Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA adopts electronic voting system for the 2015 / 2016 academic session Students Union election.
Election into various positions of the Students Union for the 2015 / 2016 academic session at the Federal University of Technology, Akure took a new dimension with the adoption of electronic voting system. The election which held at the Digital Resource Centre of the University on Thursday February 18, 2016 saw students vote candidates of their choice to various positions just by a click on the computer. Their identity cards was verified through a purposely designed card reader after which the voter proceeded to the voting area where they interfaced with programmed computers to cast their votes. After each vote a monitor at the control Centre recorded it and instantaneous tally of contestants score was displayed. The final result was ready as soon as the last student clicked on the computer to register his vote.
Dean, Students’ Affairs, Professor Kayode Alese said what informed the adoption of electronic voting system was because the University needed to showcase its leadership position in the area of cutting edge technology and research. According to him the process was very effective and an improvement on what other Institutions had done in the area of electronic voting. “Though other Institutions have adopted the process, ours is very unique because we made use of card readers. FUTA is the only Institution to have used card readers and we did not record any failure because we designed it in such a way that the contestant registered online and we have the record of registered students of this University”.
Speaking further, he said registered students on the University data base were the only ones allowed to vote thus any unregistered student could not vote as the card reader would have screened them out. “If you don’t have a valid identity card and your name is not on our data base you cannot vote” Alese stated. The don said that FUTA alumni designed the software adopted for the election at no cost. The card readers were customized for the purpose of the election.
Corroborating Alese, Chairman, Electoral Committee, Dr. Olutola Olubanjo commended the electoral process, saying the use of card readers really made the election process free and fair. It has also justified the University’s leadership position in technological advancement. Olubanjo said from start to finish, everything was electronic. “Students were accredited electronically through the use of card readers. Thereafter they proceeded to the voting proper using the computer which displayed the process to the candidates’ agents and security agents’. According to him, “It is a positive departure from the cumbersome old system of pen and paper. In fact it is innovative because no election in Nigeria has been done electronically. We commend management for this and suggest the adoption of the process for subsequent elections like Congregation and elections into offices in the Cooperative Societies”. Agents of the contestants expressed their satisfaction with the process which they claimed was a plus to the University. They also appreciated the management and the electoral committee for the innovation.
The Vice Chancellor Professor Adebiyi Daramola commended the electoral committee and the Students Affairs division for the adoption of the e voting system saying the University has once again validated its leading position in innovation and workable technology that the larger Nigerian society can benefit from.
The result of the election as announced in the presence of agents of contestants and security agents showed Oladele Segun aka Solar emerging President with a vote of 1,970.

UNIJOS Female Student Strangled To Death By Her Lover For Ignoring Him On Valentine’s Day

Melancholy report reaching 9ja School Gist Team has it that, a student of Psychology department, University of Jos, has been reportedly killed by a man believed to be her lover, for purportedly turning down his Valentine Day’s outing invitation.
The deceases simply identified as Miss Zakariah Nanchin was allegedly strangled to death by her lover, one Badung David Dele on Monday, the day after Valentine at her Angwa Rukuba apartment in Jos.
A source, close to the duo, said they have been in an intimate relationship for quite some time until a misunderstanding set in shortly before the last Valentine day.
According to The Nation, Dele was said to have reached out to Nanchin apparently to settle their differences and invited her out for Valentine. The deceased reportedly declined the invitation.
Nanchin allegedly felt that there was no basis for any dating between them having parted for some time.
Dele was said to have stormed Nanchin’s apartment the following morning and demanded an explanation why she failed to make the outing.
He reportedly grabbed her by the neck and strangled her to death after which he left the apartment and reportedly told a neighbour he met outside that he wanted to go and get some medicine for his ‘ill’ friend.
He was said to have given his phone number to the neighbour, a woman, and asked her to call him in case of any emergency.
Reports say the woman perceived something fishy had transpired, so she proceeded to Nanchin’s room only to find her lying down on her bed unconscious.
The woman, simply identified as Mama Joy, said “I called her name but she did not respond so I moved closer and I discovered that she was dead.
“I ran out, screaming to alert the people around.
“I was shocked that the boy managed to kill this girl without a gun.
“There was no blood on her body,” Mama Joy added.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Abu Emmanuel, said Badung was arrested on the same day.
“After some interrogation, he confessed to have committed the crime.
“We are making necessary arrangements to arraign him in court soon.”
Emmanuel called out to ladies, cautioning them to be careful who they date.
“Some of these boys are criminals and you might ignorantly fall into their hands like this girl,” the PPRO said, adding that the body of the deceased had been transferred from Bingham University Teaching Hospital to the Jos University Teaching Hospital JUTH for autopsy and relevant action.
