NOUN convocation: Obasanjo bags MA degree

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is among over 5,000 students that would be graduating from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) at its coming convocation. He would be conferred with MA degree in Christian Theology following successful completion of the 2014/2015 academic session.
Expectedly, the former President is going to be the star attraction at the 5th convocation  ceremony scheduled to hold at University Village, Cadastral Zone, Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway, Jabi-­Abuja.
Already, the Management of the institution had concluded arrangements for successful hosting of the convocation ceremony slated for Friday and Saturday, January 15 and 16 respectively. A statement signed by the NOUN’s Director, Media and Information, Dr. Ronke Ogunmakin, said the convocation lecture with the theme: ‘’Open and Distance Education and Socio-Economic Development’’-­would be delivered by Prof. Nuhu Yaqub, Vice Chancellor, Sokoto State University on Friday, January 15.
According to her, the convocation ceremony would feature conferment of certificates, diplomas, bachelor degrees, post graduate diplomas, masters and honorary doctorate degrees on the graduands, who had been found worthy in character and learning.
She further hinted that the occasion would be used to inaugurate the senate building and the specialist hospital sponsored by TETFUND, while His Royal Majesty, Igwe Ambassador Lawrence Okolio Chikezie Agubuzu of Olo Kingdom, Ezeagu Local Government Area, Enugu State, would also be installed as The first Chancellor of the university.

Kaduna Begins Free School Feeding For Primary And Secondary Schools

  Kaduna State Government has announced the beginning of free feeding of all public primary schools pupils with effect from January
17th, 2016.
Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Shehu Usman Adamu, while addressing newsmen in Kaduna, said public primary schools would resume 17 January while secondary schools will resume on January 11. He said this will allow for the fine-tuning and readiness of food vendors and schools to facilitate effective delivery of the free feeding programme.
According to Adamu, between 11 January and 15 January, vendors would be reconfirming their logistics and deepening their relationships with school authorities. The vendors recruited in each of the 255 wards have been organized into cooperative societies to serve free meals in every primary school in the state.
“The past few months have been a busy time for the Kaduna State Ministry of Education. During this time, the government has begun a programme of school rehabilitation, teacher recruitment and training needs assessment for current teachers. Each of these initiatives has recorded tremendous progress, and these priority areas will continue to command the attention of the government in the current session and beyond.
“As you are aware, the 2016 Budget makes ample provision for this government’s School Feeding programme. This intervention in improving the nutrition of our young pupils commences this term, from the very first day that school resumes. This intervention reinforces our thrust to expand access to education.”
“Therefore, the school feeding programme will be formally launched when pupils in government-owned primary schools in Kaduna State resume on Monday, 17 January 2016. This will afford the primary school pupils 11 weeks of tuition, with no loss of academic time. However, secondary schools across the state will resume as scheduled.
“Academic activities in secondary schools will commence on Monday, 11 January 2016, while boarders are expected to return to school by 10 January 2016.
“I am delighted to inform you that the vendors that will serve meals in every primary school have been recruited, and the daily menu has been set. The vendors in each of the 255 wards have been organized into cooperative societies. School-based management committees, comprising of parents and notable community figures, have also been sensitized to support, monitor and report on the performance of the programme in each of our schools.
“The PTAs and the SBMCs of each primary school will also meet theirrespective vendors to jointly review the procedures and modalities for effective service delivery.
“The lessons learnt during the dry-run will be swiftly applied. And we shall strictly monitor the programme to ensure that any bottlenecks that emerge in the initial stages are resolved. No one should doubt our resolve to deliver this promise to our pupils and their parents.
“The programme is designed to boost the economy at the grassroots by involving people at the community level as the vendors. It will also expand the market for our farmers even as it brings more of our people into the formal economy.
“I ask for the support of parents and school authorities to assist the satisfactory delivery of this programme. It is an initiative for which we must have the flexibility for continuous improvement. We expect that every day will surpass the preceding day in terms of delivery. For this reason, we will be announcing more feedback channels to enable our people to provide comments and suggestions, and expose shortcomings or wrongdoing,” Adamu said.

UNIJOS Over 3 Months Strike Continues With No End In Sight

University of Jos which is of resent ranked as the second best of the second generation universities has had its academic activities put on hold due to strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) UNIJOS Chapter.

The university has been shut down for the past three months and it seems there is no end to it yet as the chairman of ASUU UNIJOS chapter claims that since the strike commenced the school management has met with them just once and the management are not ready to meet their demands.

The school management on the other hand claims to have paid some money to the lecturers but (ASUU) UNIJOS Chapter said the money paid was not part of their demands that the money was paid without the management giving reasons for the payment.

It was also confirmed that (ASUU) UNIJOS Chapter has demanded 100 million as there share from the money released to all universities from the last ASUU strike.

Now the questions begging for answers are: How long will our lecturers keep us at home for there problems with the school management? Why can't ASUU find other means of engaging the school management without involving the students? Why must the school with hold the lecturers allowances?

These strikes are killing higher education in Nigeria.

JAMB 2016 Registration Closing Date

 The closing date for the registration of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as earlier announced by JAMB remains January 16th, 2016.
Though there are rumours that there's likely going to be an extension, our JAMB source has notified us that there is no official statement to that effect yet.
We therefore wish to advise all Myschoolers who are yet to purchase their 2016 UTME forms to do so on or before January 15th, 2016.
This also extends to candidates who are still waiting for supplementary or additional list of their choice schools for the 2015/2016 admission year to be released.
It is always a bad idea to have all your eggs in one basket. There is no 100% guarantee that your name will appear on the list even if the school eventually releases it.
To be on a safe side, get the JAMB form before it expires. That way, even if you miss the 2015/2016 admission, you will still stand a chance in the 2016/2017 session.

Robbers Disguise As Policemen, Attack, Rape Corps Members

  Seven corps members returning from the recent holidays were among the 16 passengers attacked by robbers at a spot on the Kaduna-Abuja highway on Sunday.
The females among the corps members serving in Enugu and Ebonyi states were reportedly defiled by the hoodlums who blocked the highway to stop vehicles.
A victim of the attack told theNews Agency of Nigeriain Enugu on Friday that the 16-seater bus carrying them was attacked by the robbers who disguised as policemen.
She said that the bus left Television Garage in Kaduna around 8:30pm and was attacked a few kilometres away from the garage.
The victim further said the robbers mounted a road block to give the impression that they were policemen on duty.
“As we approached the road block, the driver noticed that they were not policemen and tried to retreat but it was late.
“The robbers sensing what our driver wanted to do, left other cars and descended on us,” she said.
The victim said that the robbers forcefully defiled all the female corps members in the bus and took all their belongings which included laptops, jewelries, handsets, foodstuffs and money.
The corps member appealed to the government to ensure adequate security on the highways.

Federal Government Plans to extend NYSC scheme underway

The NigerianFederal Governmenthas revealed plans to extend the National Youth Service Corps programme.
This is according to Minister of Youth Development and Sports,Mr. Solomon Dalongduring a speech at Lagos State NYSC orientation camp.

Dalong, has said the Federal Government plans to expand theNational Youth Service Corpsscheme to include skill acquisition and entrepreneurial training.

He said, “Apart from the basic orientation programme, the NYSC scheme should also move into including professional and enterprising programmes to support and motivate those who would not want to embrace public services in the country.

“After the mandatory one-year service, the Federal Government is planning an extension, to professionally train interested corps members in skill acquisition, enterprising and professional programmes.

“Corps members with keen interest would be retained and some financial token given to them as start-up capital in furtherance of their skill.

“This is because due to our research, we found out that people abandon school due to uncertainty of the future. Hence, we believe this would help reduce the unemployed graduate ratio and curtail pressure on white-collar job as a means to win the war against poverty.”

He also assured that any candidate who took part in the additional training after the mandatory one-year service, will be presented with a start-up capital at the end of the training.

ATBUVarsity graduates 7,688 Students, 32 bag first class

It has been reported thatAbubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, ATBU,7,688 students at its combined 19th and 22nd convocation, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Saminu Ibrahim, said on Tuesday, January 5.

According to TheNation reports, 32 graduands obtained First Class Honors.
Ibrahim stated this during a pre-convocation press briefing in Bauchi, that the figure included 845 Diplomas, 5,554 first degrees, 1,219 Post-Graduate Diplomas and Masters and 64 Doctorate students.

He further said that of the 5,554 first degree graduands, 32 obtained First Class, 1,203 had Second Class Upper and 2,702 passed with Second Class Lower. 1481 had Third Class while 136 graduated with a Pass.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari was expected to grace the occasion scheduled to hold on Jan. 23, 2016.

FreedomCatholic bishop responsible for release of JSS 2 student, 25 others from prison

The Catholic Bishop of Yola Diocese in Adamawa State, Most Rev.Stephen Dami Mamza, has facilitated thereleaseof 26 inmates serving various prison sentences at the Yola Maximum Prison.

According toThe Eaglereports, Mamza took this action in order to commemorate 2016 as the Year of Peace as set aside by the Pontiff, Pope Frances II.
The bishop explained, during a short speech at the prison, that he felt compassion for the inmates who have been in prison for over a year simply because they could not afford to pay the fine needed for their release.

Speaking on how he found out about the plight of the inmate, Mamza disclosed that when he visited the prisons last Christmas, one of them revealed that he was sentenced to 2 years, but given an option of N700 fine.

Bishop Mamzasaid: “One of them in prison jailed for two years was unable to pay N700 as the option of fine but he couldn’t afford to pay and he is serving two years.
“For some others, it is N1,000.
“But the highest is only about N15,000.
“So I got somebody to compile those affected.

“I decided to do this because this year is very special and has been declared by the Holy Farther Pope Francis as the Year of Mercy.

“We need to be merciful to one another so that God can be merciful to us.
“We must remain our brother’s keepers and love those who are in need.”

One of the release inmates,Blessing Ishaku, a 15-year-old JSS 2 student, said she was arrested by vigilantes while sitting outside her house and taken to a police station and she was taken to court and jailed for three years with an option fine of N15,000, but she was unable to pay the fine so she has spent one month at the Yola Prison. She was thankful that she avoided the jail sentence of 3 years which would have been her fate, and thanked the Catholic church for coming to her rescue.

Kebbi Students Lament Non-Payment Of Scholarship Fees

Some students from Kebbi state during the weekend expressed displeasure over the non-payment of their scholarship by the state government.

In a meeting with the state governor, Abubakar Bagudu the delegation of 40 students were by Musa Bunza and Abdulrahman Diri from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU Zaria) and Usman Danfodio University Sokoto (UDUS) respectively laid several complaints on a backlog of registration fees among others.

Some of the students from ABU Zaria disclosed that they have not received either registration or scholarship payments for the past eight years.

The student leaders added that previous administrations had made several random payments blindly under executive orders.

“No verifiable records of how many students are from the state or even the amount paid exist, the funds appropriated goes in cash to various people, while most students deny receiving such scholarship provisions.

“A fraudulent observation made was that each time this cash get approved, students have already paid their fees and most of them are not usually refunded,”a student lamented.

Also, some of the Kebbi student indigenes at the Sokoto state University complained of inadequate or lack of accommodation.
In his response to the student’s plight, the state governor promised to accelerate all due payments and to look into ways of providing hostel for Kebbi students.
Bagudu said that there would be a total overhauling of the education sector by his administration which he said will not just cover registration for students but living expenses.

He said with the review of student’s scholarships in the state, it is expected that confirmed students will get up to 40% to 50% increase in funding.

“For the First time ever, we actually now know Kebbi state has 4,097 students in Usman Danfodio University Sokoto alone, this figure was gotten after the government ordered the state scholarship board to carry out a verification exercise of all students,”Bagudu said.

Bagudu further approved the release of N130,051,000 for the payment of registration fees, matriculation of the undergraduate students in the institution.
He ordered that all the students who had offset their fees be refunded.

“Also, approval has already been given for the 60 Kebbi state medical students studying in Sudan and India. Delays are being experienced in transferring the money due to the new foreign exchange guidelines,”he said.

However, the governor gave assurance that the issue was under review by the Central Bank of Nigeria was being looked at holistically by the CBN.

It has also been discovered that most often students from the state do not formally apply for scholarship.
It was gathered that some of the students assume that since they are from a state then scholarship is automatic.

“Scholarship is not an automatic right, it has to be applied for through the scholarship board not the governor,”the governor said.

Before now, scholarships were approved from the office of the state governor but Bagudu noted that the practise will not continue under his administration.

He said that all applications must be sent through the state’s scholarship board and approvals gotten from them.

Kwasu Penalty For Late Payment Of Compulsory Accommodation Fees 2015/2016 Announced

The authorities of Kwara State University wish to inform all Final year and Fresh students of 2015/2016 session for which accomodation is compulsory and who are yet to pay for the hostels provided must make their payments before the resumption of the Second semester(13th January, 2016) or face Penalty charges for late payment.
Any such late payment will attract a 20% extra charge on the various amounts for each hostel as follows:
a) Hostels of N35,000= becomes N42,000
b) Hostels of N65,000= becomes N78,000
c) Hostels of N60,000= becomes N72,000
d) Hostels of N45,000= becomes N54,000
e) Hostels of N75,000= becomes N90,000
f) Hostels of N50,000= becomes N60,000
All students in this category must therefore endeavour to pay the hostel fees before the dead line (13th January, 2016) or face penalty charges as identified above.

5. They should take the completed undertaking form to the High Court, Department and Students Affairs for signature.

6. They are also expected to go to the Medical Center for Medical Test.

7. They are expected to go to the ICT Center of the Federal Polytechnic, Idah or any cyber café of their choice for

their Course Registration form.

8(a). On completion of the course registration form, they should print three (3) copies of the course form, and take

them to the Head of Department for signature.

Thereafter they should submit one copy to the department, one to the admissions office and keep one copy. Note that a copy of the evidence of payment of school fees should be included in the document for submission at the department and admission office.

(b) All NDI students are to purchase and complete the Polytechnic admission form of N5,000.00 before final submission at the admission office.

Kwasu Penalty For Late Payment Of Compulsory Accommodation Fees 2015/2016 Announced

The authorities of Kwara State University wish to inform all Final year and Fresh students of 2015/2016 session for which accomodation is compulsory and who are yet to pay for the hostels provided must make their payments before the resumption of the Second semester(13th January, 2016) or face Penalty charges for late payment.
Any such late payment will attract a 20% extra charge on the various amounts for each hostel as follows:
a) Hostels of N35,000= becomes N42,000
b) Hostels of N65,000= becomes N78,000
c) Hostels of N60,000= becomes N72,000
d) Hostels of N45,000= becomes N54,000
e) Hostels of N75,000= becomes N90,000
f) Hostels of N50,000= becomes N60,000
All students in this category must therefore endeavour to pay the hostel fees before the dead line (13th January, 2016) or face penalty charges as identified above

No Plans To Abolish NYSC Scheme – FG

The Federal government of Nigeria, Tuesday asserted that there is no plan to abolish the National Youth Service Corps scheme.
The Minister of Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalong who made this know in Lagos on Tuesday, said the scheme had come to stay, adding that its merits outweighed its demerits.
The minister said this during an inspection tour of the Lagos State NYSC orientation camp in the Iyana Ipaya area of the state on Tuesday.
He stressed that the scheme had not only enhanced the socio-cultural and ethnic integration in the country but had also promoted national unity.
He said, “We cannot dismiss the gains of the NYSC scheme in integrating Nigeria; I will stand firmly for the sustenance of the system, to continue in its capacity-building of Nigeria citizens because it is an indispensable aspect of diversifying our culture.”
He said such graduates would be provided with a start-up capital at the end of the training, which according to him would indirectly stimulate interest in education.
“Apart from the basic orientation programme, the NYSC scheme should also move into including professional and enterprising programmes to support and motivate those who would not want to embrace public services in the country.
“After the mandatory one-year service, the Federal Government is planning an extension, to professionally train interested corps members in skill acquisition, enterprising and professional programmes.
“Corps members with keen interest would be retained and some financial token given to them as start-up capital in furtherance of their skill. This is because due to our research, we find out that people abandon school due to uncertainty of the future. Hence, we believe this would help reduce the unemployed graduate ratio and curtail pressure on white-collar job as a means to win the war against poverty”, he further stated.
Dalong expressed satisfaction over the state of the Lagos NYSC orientation camp, and thanked the Lagos State government for its support for the scheme.
He said, “Nigeria did not plan to have the number of graduates in this present dispensation. If we had planned effectively, the concept of NYSC camping would have started with a permanent and effective structure.
“The visionaries of the scheme did not anticipate the lifespan of the scheme after the Civil War; the implementation of the scheme was a strategy to mobilise and integrate Nigerians together, hence, the huge number of graduates each year has put much pressure on the facilities, calling for constant renovation and upgrading,” the minister said.

The Lagos state Government has also approved 70 years as retirement age for professors of the institution.
Governor Akinwumi Ambode on Tuesday, signed the Lagos State University (Amendment) Bill, into law at the Lagos House, Ikeja.
The Bill, which was signed into law, also approved a five-year single term for the Vice-Chancellor of the school.
Ambode said the law was aimed at raising the standard of the school to an enviable position and making LASU a school to be proud of.
“It is the desire of the state government to build a LASU that will produce better students. In the next
few days, changes will begin to happen in the school.”
Ambode stated that the law was a demonstration of his commitment to actualise the dream of the founding fathers of the institution, while adding that

LASU University authority directs staff to sign nominal roll or forfeit salary

TheLagos State University (LASU)has directed its staff to resume the signing of nominal roll before the fifth day of every month to ensure payment of their salaries.
This is contained in the university's official bulletin ‎made available to theNews Agency of Nigeria (NAN)on Sunday in Lagos.
According to the bulletin, the directive is meant for both the academic and Non-academic staff.
"The university management also reiterates that as it is the practice, failure to submit the nominal roll by the 5th of every month by any faculty, college, school, department, centre or unit will lead to the forfeiture of salary of the concerned staff for that month,"it said.
The bulletin said the members of staff must henceforth resume the signing of the nominal ‎roll in their various faculties, colleges, schools, departments, centres and units from January 2016.

Rankings UNIPORT makes list of top 30 University in Africa

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Vice President,Mr. Laolu Akande, in a statement on Sunday, January 3, revealed that the Federal Government would not import food for its school feeding programme.

The School FeedingProgramme, which is another aspect of the social intervention programmes, would be entirely homegrown, unlike previous Federal Government plans in the past which relied on importation.

Akande said, “Homegrown school feeding programme will commence in public primary schools in the New Year providing adequate nutrition to schoolchildren, promoting local farming, boost agriculture and create jobs and wealth locally.

“We have experts working in the Presidency, collaborating with experts from global bodies who together will bring to bear international best practices working on how best to implement these programmes.

I can tell you that no sooner had President Buhari resumed work than many of these experts have been meeting and planning on how best to implement these plans.

“We are not talking here of something hurriedly put together or a programme where some consultants would take the huge chunk of the resources.”

He also said provision had been made for about one million jobs in 2016, including 500,000 graduate-youths to be engaged as teachers and another 500,000 non-graduate unemployed people, who would be trained as artisans.

University of Ilorin JAMB increases university's admission quota to 9000 - VC

Prof.AbdulGaniyu Ambali, the Vice- Chancellor,(V-C)University of Ilorin, (Unilorin) inKwara, on Monday said that theJoint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) had increased the university’s admission quota from 7,800 to 9,000.
Ambali who disclosed this during an interactive session with newsmen inIlorinsaid that the development had afforded the institution to increase its students’ intake.
The V-C also said that the university management had acquired additional laboratory equipment that would ensure an enabling learning condition for its students.
“We are looking forward in 2016 to re-emphasise and concentrate our efforts to sustain the feats the university had achieved in the previous years as the best,” he said.
Ambali, however, dismissed the agitation from some quarters of passing into law the “banking of JAMB results”.
This would afford a candidate the opportunity to use the same result obtained at one sitting of JAMB’s entrance examination to seek admission into the university for two years instead of writing it annually.
The V-C said that candidates re-writing examinations annually would perform better than they had done in previous ones.
Ambali also said that investors were already on ground to build additional a 5,000-bed-space hostel for the institution.
He said that this would assist the university to achieve its vision of providing hostel accommodations for thousands of its students currently living outside the campus

Federal Government Officially Stops Petrol Subsidy

    The Federal Government has officially ended the subsidy on premium motor spirit, popularly known as petrol. The latest Petroleum Products Pricing template, issued by the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency does not contain the usual subsidy component.
The PPPRA is the government agency that regulates the prices of petroleum products in the country and its template has always offered insights into how the pricing of these products are determined by the regulators.
As of December 28 last year, the official pricing template for petrol by the PPPRA showed that the Federal Government subsidised the product by N6.45 per litre. The Expected Open Market Price at that time was N93.45, which was N6.45 higher than the then retail price of N87 per litre.
On the revised template, the Estimated Open Market Price set by the regulator is now N84.78 for NNPC fuel stations and N85.1 for stations run by other oil marketer companies.
The EOMP is the summation of the landing cost of petrol and subtotal margins. Such margins include transporter’s cost, dealer’s charge, bridging fund, administrative charge, etc. Our correspondent said that the EOMP, therefore, is the true cost of the product.
Before the release of the revised template, the EOMP was usually higher than the retail/pump price of petrol at filling stations. The difference between the retail price and the EOMP was what the Federal Government paid as subsidy to oil marketers.
However, the new EOMP is lower than the retail price of N86.5, which was set by the Federal Government as the amount at which petrol should be sold nationwide. The implication is that Nigerians are paying an extra N1.4 for the commodity whenever they buy PMS at non-NNPC run petrol stations and N1.22 extra for every litre of petrol bought at NNPC-run filling stations.
On the extra amount paid by consumers for the commodity, the Group General Manager, Corporate Planning and Strategy, NNPC, Mr. Bello Rabiu, while explaining the template, told our correspondent that the negative subsidy would be remitted to the Petroleum Support Fund in line with the PPPRA guidelines.
He said, “The savings under such a regime could be domiciled in the PSF as a buffer to fund future subsidy (if any) that may arise during high oil price regime or invested by the industry in supply and distribution efficiency improvement projects such as decongestion of Apapa area, Single Point Monitoring in Port Harcourt and Warri, complimentary rail services, inland waterways, etc.”
The PPPRA, after getting approval from the Federal Government, had announced last Tuesday that retail filling stations belonging to the NNPC would from Friday, January 1, 2016 sell petrol at N86 per litre, while other oil marketers would sell the commodity at N86.5 per litre.
The Executive Secretary, PPPRA, Mr. Farouk Ahmed, while announcing the new price of PMS in Abuja, had told journalists on Tuesday that the reduction in the price of the commodity was due to the implementation of the revised components of the petroleum products pricing template for PMS and House Hold Kerosene.
He said the template would be reviewed on a quarterly basis as it was geared towards ensuring an efficient and market-driven price that would reflect current realities.
Ahmed had said, “Since 2007, while crude oil price had been moving up and down, the template has remained the same. This made it necessary for us to introduce a mechanism whereby the template would be sensitive to the price of crude oil.
“However, the template is not static, as there would be a quarterly review and if there is any major shift, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources would be expected to call for a review, either upwards or downwards. If there is no major shift, the price would continue from January to March 2016. In addition, there would be a Product Pricing Advisory Committee that would be set up to advice the PPPRA concerning movements in the price of crude oil.”
On why the NNPC sold at a lower price than other oil marketers, Ahmed explained that it was due to the fact that it was cheaper for the corporation to import products, compared to the independent and major oil marketers.
Some oil marketers had told our correspondent that although it was possible to sell PMS at a “reduced price”, Nigerians might not be ready to absorb future fluctuations or modulations in the pump price of petrol.
The Corporate Affairs Manager, NIPCO PLC, an oil marketing firm, Mr. Lawal Taofeeq, said, “It is possible, but the issue that government needs to understand is that, should there be fluctuation in price, are Nigerians ready to absorb it? If the price of crude oil should go up again, will Nigerians be ready to pay the resultant increased cost for petrol? Thus, there is need for adequate education in this matter.”
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, on December 27 last year, had told journalists in Kaduna that the government was currently not paying subsidy on petrol.
“Today, there is no subsidy; we are selling the product at N87; in January, we will look at what the trend is, we will announce (a new) price if that is less than N87; we will announce it and if it is more than that, we will have to announce it,” the minister, who also doubles as the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, had said.

Akwa-Ibom Government assures that free education will continue

The Akwa-Ibom government has come out to put to rest rumours that the it will be introducing fees from 2016.

The Commissioner for Education,Rt. Hon. Aniekan Akpan, in an interview withThe Nation,has assured citizens that the free education policy introduced by the previous administration would be sustained by the Udom Emmanuel-led government despite paucity of funds.

“The administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel is continuing with the free and compulsory education of the state in the primary and secondary schools. The government does not have the intention to introduce school fees in the system. The fear is unfounded,” said Akpan who advised the public to always seek information from credible sources.

Akpan also addressed rumours that the administration needs to employ 20,000 more teachers for it to be able to sustain the educational standard.

“The system is dynamic. There was recruitment in 2013 and another in 2015. The process is still on. The government is being careful and systematic. We don’t want to bring in people and in the next months cannot pay. Teachers’ recruitment into the system is ongoing,” he said.

“You don’t need 20,000 new teachers to ensure quality. You don’t need to put 25 teachers in a school to ensure quality. What is really needed are trained teachers who are ready to teach,” he said.  

OAU Varsity begins accepting entries for distance learning

The Obafemi Awolowo UniversityCentre for Distance Learning (OAUCDL) has commenced applications for its 2015/2016 Degree programmes in Accounting, Economics and Nursing.
Vanguardreports that this follows the completion of examinations for its 317 students currently enrolled in the eLearning programme.
The programme, which was introduced in April 2014, is a step in the right direction, says OAUCDL’s Director, ProfMichael Adeyeye.
He added that this is due to the fact that the existing higher institutions can only admit one-third of degree seeking Nigerians.

In Ondo Government suspends 3 principals, 23 teachers

 TheOndo State governmenthas suspended 3 principals and up to 23 secondary school teachers due to indiscipline.
The state chairman of the Teaching Service Commission,Mr Francis Igbasanmade this known in Akure yesterday, adding that the principals and teachers had a lackadaisical attitude towards their jobs.
Igbasan disclosed that the offending teachers were nabbed when members of the commission made an unscheduled visit 72 secondary schools across the state.
According to him, “The commission would not take the issue of indiscipline at work lightly again, the TESCOM of yesterday is different of TESCOM of today, any teacher or member of staff that is not serious at his or her duty posts would be shown the way out.
“ This government is trying its best for workers of this state, so the workers too should reciprocate it with hardwork.”
It was also announced by the governor of the state, Olusegun Mimiko, who was represented by his deputy, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo, that the commission will be recruiting 1,050 teachers immediately.
The governor said, “We shall continue to ensure that the welfare of our workers is accorded its rightful place in the scheme of things and also ensure that our teachers are well trained and rewarded to enable them re-dedicate themselves to their duties and with vigour.”

TambuwalSokoto Govt to get rid of unqualified teachers

   Governor of Sokoto State,Aminu Tambuwalhas said he would re-assign teachers who do not possess the required qualifications.

He announced that the government will begin to train teachers to conform with modern teaching techniques.
Tambuwal made this statement during the yearly national congress of alumni of his alma mater, the Dogon Daji Old Boys Association (DOBA).
He mentioned that alot of moneyhas been budgeted for retraining teachers, and that any teacher who does not perform at par after this, will have to be transferred to to other ministries and departments of government.
He said: “Those who don’t have the requisite qualifications would be re-assigned but will not lose their jobs. Let me announce it here that we do not plan to retrench any teacher working with the state government. In fact, we need more quality teachers to address shortfall in numbers.

“What we will not condone in our schools are unqualified teachers who have nothing to offer our children. If after giving you the necessary training, we discovered you don’t have the capacity or enthusiasm to teach, we will reassign you to where your expertise if most needed,” he added.

Four Federal Universities To Offer Welding Engineering In 2016

The president of the Nigeria Institute of Welding (NIW), Chief Solomon Edebiri has stated that four Federal universities in the country will begin offering Welding Engineering from next year.

The four federal universities are University of Benin, Edo State; Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Delta state; Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger state; and Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Bauchi State.

According to him, this development is a result of collaboration with the Petroleum Development Fund (PTDF).

He noted that the availability of competency in welding, inspection, fitting and machining and welding engineering will complete the quality loop needed in welding construction, fabrication and manufacturing.

2016 New Year’s Day: Free ride for passengers on BRT/LAGBUS

Lagos State Government has directed operators of the Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, and Bus Franchise Scheme, BFS, to offer free bus ride to commuters tomorrow, January 1st, 2016.

Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, while felicitating with residents for seeing the New Year, explained that free service would be offered to commuters on the BRT corridor from Ikorodu via Mile 12 to CMS by the BRT operator, Primero Transport Service Limited while Capetrust Investment Ltd, operator of the BFS will offer services along its corridor – Maryland – Ikeja-Iyana-Ipaja – Ikotun- Igando axis of Alimoso and Ikeja Local Governments.

Mobereola said the state government was poised to ensure that it catered for the transportation needs of the people and ensured that they moved unhindered during the New Year celebrations.

A) All those who have completed their programmes and have been cleared for convocation are to sign for and receive academic gowns and guest invitation cards from their respective Study Centres with effect from Tuesday, 5th January, 2016. The accompanying hoods are to be collected from the NOUN Study Centre, Dutse-Alhaji Junction Kubwa Expressway, Abuja from 10.00 a.m. on Monday, 11th January, 2016. They are required to present the following for sighting at the points of collection of the items:

i) the receipt of the payment of a fee of N10,000.00 for the use of Academic gowns. This is payable at their respective Study Centres.

ii) an evidence of payment of Alumni fees of Five Thousand (N5,000.00) which is payable at any branch of Zenith Bank Plc.; Account No. 1014150406

iii) a duly completed and authenticated clearance form issued at the Study Centre.

The sum of Three Thousand (N3, 000.00) Naira will be refunded on the return of the Academic gowns and hoods to the respective points of collection.

Please note that both items must be returned not later than Tuesday, 19th January, 2016 from 9.00 a.m. Failure to return the gowns and hoods by the prescribed date shall attract a fine of N1, 000.00 per day.

Admission Closure Lecturers warn Aregbesola

Governor Rauf Aregbesolaof Osun State recently directed managements of four tertiary institutions in the stage to put an immediate stop to admitting any more candidates for the 2015/2016 academic session.

The Council of Academic Staff Unions of the institution has warned the governorto rescind this directive within 14 days for an industrial action.
This warning was contained in a letter by the union to the governor and maid available toPunch.

The letter partly read,“The managements of the state-owned colleges of education (Ilesa and Ila-Orangun) and polytechnics (Iree and Esa-Oke) respectively have put the admission of students for the 2015/2016 academic session on hold under the guise of complying with a directive from the state government that admission must not be conducted in the next two years.

“Consequently, we are using this medium to demand that the government should come out clean on this issue and withdraw any directive stopping the admission within the next fourteen (14) days to prevent industrial crisis in the sector.”
The council worried that stopping admission will negatively impact the reputation of the institution as most of them have advertised for admission and some had even collected application fees from prospective students.

“It will leave the large number of students under the preliminary programmes stranded as their chance of transition to Year 1 class is so abruptly nullified," the letter said.

Adekunle Ajasin University Government employs 18 First Class graduates of the institution

The Ondo State Government has employed 18 graduands with First Class honors from the state institution, Adekunle Ajasin University.

Vanguardreports that governor of the state, Olusegun Mimiko offered these graduates automatic employment. They will immediately be iunder the employ of the civil service if they choose to accept this offer.

Mimiko, who made this declaration at the 6th convocation of the Institution, expressed his pride in the graduands.
The governor also praised the management for being able to maintain six years of academic activities without interruption due to strike action.

Mimiko assured all that the government will continue to work tirelessly to make education affordable in the state.
The vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Igbekele Ajibefun said the institution ultimate desire was to accommodate its over 14,000 students on campus compared to less than 20percent that are now accommodated.

FUTA "Why we sacked 45 staff members" - school management reveals

The management of theFederal University of Technology, Akure, has revealed their reasons for sacking 45 workers of the institution.

The Nationreports that the FUTA authorities have defended this action by saying that was in line with Federal Government’s policy on university education.
In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer, Adegbenro Adebanjo, the university maintained that the decision to sack the workers followed a recent circular from the Federal Ministry of Education, directing universities to disengage workers in staff schools.

The statement also added that FUTAwas not the inly institution to make this move, saying all universities in the country were directed to take the action.
“This is because the Federal Government is no longer ready to take responsibility for the funding of salaries of staff of primary schools affiliated to its Institutions or other agencies,” he stated.

Educational Challenges "Nigeria does not need more Universities" - Okebukola

The immediate past Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Prof. Peter Okebukolahas said that the only way to cope with challenges facing education in the country is to expand the facilities in existing institution, and not the creation of new ones.
He made this assertion during his speech at the 6th Convocation Lecture of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State.

According toLeadershipreports, Okebukola also advised that for the nation to achieve the desired quantity-quality requirement, its universities must keep within its carrying capacity, install a robust quality assurance directorate, institute annual ranking of Faculties, and boost their cutting-edge research efforts.
Speaking on the topic, “Quality or Quantity: Positioning the Nigerian University System for the Challenges of Science and Technology in the New Millennium”, Okebukola noted that the country must embark on massive upgrading of physical facilities in existing universities to take in at least additional 1,000 students per year. This, according to him will involve more classrooms, hostels, laboratories, workshops, library and offices.

5 Reasons Most Students Are Not Offered Admission Despite High Post-UTME Score

Most admission seekers are often times left confused trying to get the reason they were not offered admission to the institution of their choice despite having a very high UTME score. At times, having a high Post-UTME is not a guarantee for admission. The following are the reasons students may not be offered admission despite having a high post-UTME score;
1 Wrong UTME combination
This is one of the reasons a number of students lose admission despite beating the post-UTME cut-off point. Even at times, some students are being stripped of their admission or moved to another department during the process of first-year registration simply because of wrong JAMB subject combination. For instance, a student seeking admission to study mass communication would definitely lose the admission if he or she did not take Literature-in-English as part of the four subjects for the UTME exam. Similarly, a student seeking admission to study Physics and Electronics should definitely select Physics as part of his UTME subject combination. Before any student fills his or her JAMB form, he or she should painstakingly go through the JAMB Brochure to know the right subject combination for his or her course of study.
2. University’s catchment area
Most federal universities, including some state universities, still retain the policy of catchment area in selecting students for admission. For instance, UNILAG catchment area constitutes majorly South Western states. What this implies is; prospective students from the South West have higher chances of gaining admission. For example, a prospective student from Osun state who scored 56, applying to study sociology may be offered admission while another student from Imo state who scored 60 may not be offered admission. This is so because if the catchment cut-off point for Osun is 56 while the general cut-off is 62, such a student from Imo state has definitely lost the admission despite having a higher score than his counterpart from the catchment zone. In view of the above, admission seekers should always be aware of a university’s catchment area and requirements before selecting any university.
3. University policy
Despite the general catchment area policy, some universities still have their individual policy they adopt as yardstick in admitting students. Oftentimes, such policies are not made public. It is therefore the duty of admission seekers to find out specific admission policies of their prospective universities from friends schooling in such universities.
4. Low UTME score
Often times, I pity most Jambites who score within the range of 180 and 210 because such scores limit their chances of gaining admission in a situation where they have to compete for the same admission slot with students who score as high as 250 and above. And most universities still compute both UTTME and post-UTME scores in calculating the student’s average score. Hence, having a low UTME score can also hinder one’s opportunity of gaining admission. It is always advisable for students to try to score 250 and above in order to be on a safer side. As a matter of fact, it is very necessary concerning the JAMB policy of redirecting students with lower UTME scores to less-competitive universities.
5. O’level result
I do advise admission seekers to pass ALL the necessary subjects in their O’level exam(s) very well before going ahead to take UTME exam. I have met with lots of students who lost their admission because they did not have at least credit pass in some important subjects in their O’level result. Recently, I met with a student who lost his admission to study medicine at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye (OOU) because he did not have at least a credit pass in Mathematics in his O’level result. In fact, I felt very sorry for him because gaining admission to study a competitive course such as medicine is not easy.

  Prof. AbdulHafiz Oladosu of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan, has called on world leaders not to judge Islam from the negative attitude of some Muslims.
Oladosu made the call at the formal opening of the 100th edition of the Annual Islamic Vacation Course (IVC) held at IVC permanent site, kilometre 30, Lagos/Ibadan Express way.
At the event, organised by Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Southern Zone, the Don said that the misbehaviour of some Muslims should not be used as the basis for judging what Islam really stood for.
“It’s not Islam that should be held responsible for the misbehaviour of some Muslims.
“The same way you don’t hold a car responsible when it has an accident; you need to question the driver and owner of the car.
“Allah gave the religion of Islam to the Muslims; it is we the Muslims that are misrepresenting the gift from Allah.
“The world should try to read about Islam and not about Muslims,’’ Oladosu said.
He called on Muslims to find their way back to the teachings of Islam so as not to allow the public to stigmatise Islam as a religion of trouble makers rather than religion of peace.
In his remark, Malam Muhammad Jameel, National President of MSSN, urged the Federal Government to disregard the banning of Islamic dress in the name of security as such would lead to denial of fundamental right to practice one’s religion.
He also called on government to urgently address the myriad of problems facing the country.
“It is pertinent to call on our leaders to make concerted efforts to cushion the harsh socio-economic and education realities of today.
“These range from poverty, inflation, fuel scarcity to falling standard of education, among others,’’ Jameel said.
Highlights of the occasion were the recitation of the Holy Qur’an and presentation of award of appreciation to dignitaries for their contributions to the development of the MSSN and Islam.
Those given the awards include; the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar; the Executive-Secretary of Muslim Ummah of South Western Nigeria, Prof. Daud Noibi, and the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Nomadic Education, Prof. Rashid Aderinoye.
Others are; Alhaji Kunle Sanni, Chairman, Oyo State Muslim Community; Dr Daud Amoo-Alaga, a renowned Islamic preacher, and Malam Yusuf Ali, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), among others. (NAN)

Today was going good at least not to mention the usual "aroma* (lol) of shodeinde's Toilets and environs. My classes would be rounded up by 12... I smiled, I remembered Topsy the diploma babe I was currently chykin.., She had this slim figure like a broom I don't even know what I saw in her then... it was after today's episode I started to Comfort myself she ain't good enough for me (˘̯˘ )
Okay we had planned to go and see a movie... On monday but we couldn't go due to my heavy schedule of lectures... So my pal, Slamnizzle told me 2 chill till Wednesday that I could take her then... But to make up for the disappointment the previous day I refused and decided to take her on that Tuesday...
I was in year 1 and most times I had been 2 E-Centre 4 movies was on Wednesday when we had free popcorn and drinks... God blesh wednesdays!!
But without checking ma pocket I carried my big head and withdrew ma last 4k from the ATM that morning believing it should be enough for today. So When Topsy called, I told her 2 dress up. While I went 2 treat myself to a sumptuous meal inside Huski cafteria consuming out of the 4k I had withdrawn earlier in the day.. She came down around 6pm looking all dressed and beautiful... In my mind am thinking "owww so na bcoz of me dis gal make up like dis... Well she's feeling the boy oo"

OAU lecturer dies in auto crash

The Obafemi Awolowo University has again been thrown into mourning, following the death of one of its lecturers, Prof. Foluke Ogunleye, in an automobile accident.
Our correspondent gathered that Ogunleye died on December 26 on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while travelling to Lagos.
The deceased was once the Head, Department of Dramatic Art, OAU and was said to have spent over three decades as a lecturer in the university.
The late professor was said to be the elder sister of Mr. Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser on Media to President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Public Relations Officer of the OAU, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, confirmed Ogunleye’s death to our correspondent on the telephone.
He said, “Prof. Foluke Ogunleye died on December 26, on her way to Lagos. She was one of the icons which the Department of Dramatic Art and the nation rely on. The university will sorely miss her.”
Ogunleye turned 50 in 2012. According to information sighted by our correspondent on the OAU website, her birthday was celebrated with an international conference in her honour with the theme,’ Nigerian Theatre, Media, Popular Culture and Social Change.’
The focus of her academic career was on the use of drama, theatre and the mass media as instruments for improving the society. She directed many plays for the stage and the mass media and also acted in many stage and film productions.
The news of Ogunleye’s death came less than two months after a former Provost, College of Health Sciences, OAU, Prof. Solomon Ogunniyi, was found dead inside his office.
