Google’s projects, like our users, span the globe and require managers to keep the big picture in focus. As a Program Manager at Google, you lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects. You plan requirements with internal customers and usher projects through the entire project lifecycle. This includes managing project schedules, identifying risks and clearly communicating goals to project stakeholders. Your projects often span offices, time zones and hemispheres, and it’s your job to keep all the players coordinated on the project’s progress and deadlines.

As a Program Manager, you will coordinate, manage scalable developer outreach and support programs, including the Google Developer Groups program, across the Sub-Saharan Africa region. This could include responsibility for Google events, as well as having responsibility for content. Additionally, you will manage local regional (West and Central Africa) relationships with regional developers and start-up communities, including technology hubs, incubators and accelerators. You will meet with local region developers and companies, promoting Google technologies and programs to them. You will also track both the top apps and top developers from your assigned region and look at how Google can better spotlight both them and their apps.

You will act as the “regional expert” for West and Central Africa within the Developer Relations team, in addition to managing the Google Developer Groups (GDG) program across Sub-Saharan Africa and other programs as needed.
The Program Manager role is not tied to a particular product assignment, but rather is regionally-focused in an attempt to drive interest in a broad range of products that are strategic to Google’s success in various global regions. You have a strong technical background, as well as a history as an active participant/lead in developer or startup communities, and exceptional project/program management skills.
You ideally have a community management background with a deep understanding of ecosystem interactions between and among various developer communities. You will find creative ways to increase impact by working closely with technology hubs, Google Developer Experts (GDE), Google Developer Groups, Google Developers Launchpad and other related developer initiatives in the region.

Essential Responsibilities
Ensure that developers, startups and partners in the local region are successful through building applications and businesses on Google’s platforms.Coordinate and execute both online and offline outreach in the local region. Emeka Anyaoku Diplomat calls for re-introduction of history in schools

 Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, on Thursday urged both the Federal and state governments to re-introduce history as a subject in their schools to enable the younger ones know about the past.
Anyaoku gave the advice during the 70th anniversary of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) in Lagos.
He said that history was a subject that could enable an individual to know more about his or her past, which should not be eradicated.
''Without the knowledge of the past, there will be no fruitful projections for the future.
'' The knowledge of the past is very vital to the development of the country.
'' We can only solve present societal problems when we know what was obtainable in the past,''Anyaoku said.
He urged the Federal Government to devout substantial financial support to the NCMM to enable it effectively display Nigerian cultural wealth.
Anyaoku advised the management of the commission to collaborate with museums in African and American countries to re-write the culture of the world.
'' This will earn Nigerians greater respect in the world,''he said.
The Director-General of the Commission, Mallam Yusuf Usman, in his welcome address to the event said that the commission would propagate the change mantra of the present civilian administration to its logical conclusion.
'' We are committed to repositioning the system to play key roles in the promotion of creativity, patriotism, integrity, honesty and discipline,''he said.
Usman said that the event would feature the inauguration of an exhibition titled ``70 iconic objects’ as part of the historic celebration.

Global Reach US Varsity signs agreement with Adekunle Ajasin University

The management at theAlabama State University,United States, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding withAdekunle Ajasin Universityin Ondo State, Nigeria,TheNewsreports.

This agreement means that student and faculty exchange opportunities between the two universities will be made possible.

ASU President Gwendolyn E. Boyd and the vice chancellor of the Nigerian University, Professor Amos Ajibefun, signed the agreement on ASU’s campus.

The meeting also included ASU’s provost and vice president for academic affairs, Dr. Leon C. Wilson; retired ASU professor, Dr. David A. Iyegha; the dean of the College of Science, Mathematics and Technology, Dr. Kennedy Wekesa; and Adekunle Ajasin Universityprofessor, Dr. Timothy Adejumo.

“Alabama State University is very internationally focused,” said Boyd. “We have more than 40 countries represented in our student body and faculty. We are open to new international relationships because we know that the students that we are training now will operate in a global environment. They will travel all over the world. They will be engaged in international business and research. So the experiences they have while in college will be of great benefit to them in the future.”

Ajibefun is also excited about what this partnership will mean for the Nigerian students.

SSANU Association threatens indefinite strike

  TheSenior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities(SSANU) has threatened to declare an indefinite strikedue to a directive by theFederal Governmentfor universities to retrench workers of University Staff Schools.

Mr Samson Ugwoke, The National President of the association, at a news conference on Friday, December 18, they were unhappy with the failure of the federal government to honour the agreement it had with the association.
“SSANU wishes to notify the Federal Government of our intention to resume our national industrial action on rejection of the directive to Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities, by the National Salaries, income and wages Commission to retrench over 2,000 workers.
“This set of people has been employed by the universities councils for upward of decades and productively contributing their quotas to the development of the Nigerian education system, “ he said.

He said that the directive to retrench the workers emanated from a circular written on behalf of the minister of Education.
According to him, the implication of this directive is that this category of workers from over 30 universities will be thrown into the unemployment market.
Ugwoke said that the implementation of such directive would be a gross violation and breach of the 2009 agreement between the association and government.
According to him, the agreement is that the university shall bear full capital and recurrent cost of University Staff Primary schools.
“Having engaged the government in prolonged negotiations which culminated in the signing of the 2009 agreement, we hereby declare that we will defend the sanctity of every part of that agreement, “ he said.

Ambode 'One Meal A Day' begins in 2016

 Governor of Lagos State,Akinwunmi Ambode'A-Meal-a-Day' programme in the state’s Public Primary schools would commence in 2016.
He disclosed this on Thursday, December 17, at while presenting the year 2016 budget proposal to the Lagos State House of Assembly.
“This programme promises not only to improve the daily nutrition of our children. GOIt will also create an economy of its own, with opportunities for job creation, income generation, poverty alleviation, and so on,” he said.

Ambodealso says that other educational development plans would be made, such as free textbooks for schools and mandatory capacity building programmes for teachers in public schools. “We intend to launch an advocacy programme Kick Illiteracy out of Lagos’, starting from year 2016.
“I am happy to inform you that in 2016, we will develop our e-Curriculum, leading to the distribution of Ibile tablets to students in our public schools,” he said.
He said that it would also enhance the knowledge of the children, to enable them to compete effectively with their peers in developed countries.

Examination WAEC might begin using CBT for objective questions

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is considering making use of Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode of examinations for objective questions .
Head, National Office of WAECin Lagos,Mr Olutise Adenipekundisclosed this in an interview while announcing the 2015 November/ December examination resultson Thursday.
He said that, due to the current technology trends, it makes sense that this mode of examination might be the next course of action for the board.
NANreports that the council is pursuing this with vigour and is looking toward its realisation soon.
Adenipekunadded that this means that teachers will be trained on the new processes and procedures to standardised tests.
He said that the process would expose the Nigerian child to the benefits of information and communication technology, which was currently driving national economies.
NANrecalls that the former National head,Mr Charles Eguridu,in August, admitted that WAEC does not have any plansto introduce the CBT mode.
Eguridu had said that it would amount to “intellectual dishonesty’’ for him to say that the council would introduce CBT in the next five years or the near future.  

WAEC releases Nov/Dec 2015 WASSCE result

 The National Office of the West Africa Examinations Council has released the November/December 2015 private examination.
Head of the National office of WAEC, Mr. Olutise Isaac Adenipekun who announced the result at a press briefing said 79,490 candidates representing 33.51 percent obtained six credits and above while 113,573 candidates representing 47.88 percent obtained five credits. He did not however state whether Mathematics and English were among the subjects, noting that the private examination was just a make-up examination for candidates needing to pass certain subjects.
Adenipekun added that 146,253 candidates representing 61.67 percenr obtained credits and above in four subjects while 175,718


candidates representing 74.09 percent obt

ained credits and above in three subjects
According to him, 237,154 candidates consisting of 124,512 males and 112,642 females sat for the examination.
“Out of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination, 235,542 candidates representing 99.32 percent have their results fully processed and released. 1,612 candidates representing 0.68 percent have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors, traceable mainly to the candidates in the course of registration or writing the examination. Such errors are being corrected by the council to enable the affected candidates have their results,” the head of the national office said.
He also disclosed that results of 28,768 candidates representing 12.13percent are being withheld for further investigation in connection with various cases of examination malpractices.
Adenipekun further disclosed that the council has introduced a cutting-edge technology in the conduct of its examinations.
“It is called “CredenceOne”. It is the intersection of mobile communication and biometric technology. It is a mobile biometric identification and verification system, built on the Android operating system,” he added.

5killed, 7 injured as IPOB, MASSOB clash with JTF in Onitsha

  Five people were shot dead while seven others
sustained various injuries at the Niger Bridge
Head, when members of the Indigenous people
of Biafra, IPOB, and Movement for the
Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra,
MASSOB, clashed with the Joint Task Force, JTF,
which comprised of the Army and the Police,
yesterday.
Four of the victims shot dead were members of
both IPOB and MASSOB, while one person is said
to be a soldier, who was grabbed by the mob,
angry with the way soldiers opened fire on the
jubilating crowd that included non pro-Biafra
agitators, and fell four of them before they ran,
leaving the victims behind.
All the markets around the Niger Bridge Head,
including the Bridge Head Market, Onitsha Patent
and Propitiatory Medicine Dealers Market (Ogbo
Ogwu Market) and other markets located around
the bridge, including Abada Market were quickly
shut down, following sporadic shooting by the
military to scare the jubilant crowd away.
An eye-witness at the Onitsha Head Bridge, who
was coming from Asaba end of the bridge,
said the Biafra agitators were said to be
marching on the road near the River Niger
Bridge, chanting solidarity songs in jubilation of
the release of Nnamdi Kanu, when they were
accosted by the soldiers, who ordered them to
go back, an altercation occurred which made the
soldiers allegedly open fire on them.
Another version of the story was that, the pro-
Biafra agitators and those sympathetic to their
cause, were jubilating, singing and dancing near
the bridge, the soldiers who had been guiding
the bridge since the last shooting, got incensed
by the jubilation and opened fire on the
protesters which caused the death of unarmed
protesters.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ali
Okechukwu confirmed the clash and accused the
pro-Biafra agitators of mobilizing over I00 of their
members to launch attack on the soldiers at the
Niger Bridge Head and even tried to dispossess
them of their guns.
Speaking on the incident, leader of MASSOB, Mr.
Uchenna Madu said the news of the release of
Mr. Kanu elicited singing, dancing and jubilation
in Onitsha and other ‘Biafran’ lands and those in
Onitsha took their dance to Chukwemeka
Odumegwu Ojukwu plaque at the Niger Bridge
Head and out of envy, and because of the
singing and dancing, and banters they were
throwing with one another, the soldiers, who
mounted a road-block there, opened fire on the
dancing protesters and killed four.
He said that no amount of intimidation,
harassment and killing of their members will
make them resort to violence, adding that “the
military is doing all sorts of things to push us into
violence, but we will never do that because that
is what has been setting us free in all the
harassment and intimidation we have been going
through.”

Chris NgigeUnemployed youths will be employed as teachers

Dr. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment has clarified that not every graduate is entitled to the promised N5,000 by the federal government.
The minister made this known at the 5th anniversary ofBinaFoundation and graduation ceremony of its students in Enugu.
Ngige added that most graduates will be employed as teachers to reduce the rate of unemploymentin the country.
He explained that contrary to the widely-held belief that the N5,000 was meant for all youths, only the vulnerable ones amongst them would benefit.
He said, “TheAPC governmentanchored delivery on three pillars; security of lives and property, improving economy under which employment creation is the third sub-head, and infrastructure revival.

“Most unemployed graduates would be converted to teachers. The move is equally aimed at boosting the education sector,” he said, when asked how the Federal Government plans to combat unemployment.
Ngige noted that majority of the current crop of teachers in public schools were half-baked.
“Most of our schools have half-baked teachers. We want to redefine our schools and make them what they are.
“We are also building skill acquisition centres. We have 12 of them across the country. The era of white-collar industry is gone.
“Nobody in Nigeria will be unemployed, people will learn how to use their hands.”

ASUP Retirees honoured with N1mn each

TheAcademic Staff Union of Polytechnics(ASUP),Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic(KENPOLY) Chapter Bori, Rivers Sate, has appreciated three of its members who retired from the polytechnic recently with N1 million each.
TheNationreports that the union received this bounty during ts end-of-year congress meeting held at the polytechnic convocation arena in Bori, the capital of Ogoni.
Acting Rector,Dr. Georgewill Onengiye, disclosed that the main reason for rewarding the retirees is to show that the union has the welfare of its members at heart.
“It has been one of ASUP’s rituals; and we have decided not to abandon it. This year only three member of the union are retiring. Though we don’t have enough to do this but we have no option but to honour them. This is our own way of saying goodbye,” he said.
One of the recipients,Mr Rowland Siminialaye, was very grateful for the gift.
“I want to thank God that today my colleagues have decided to appreciate and honour us. It is something I will not forget. I joined the polytechnic five years after its establishment. We did our best to ensure that the school is where it is today. To be frank I am humbled with the union’s gesture,” he said.

Country Bans Whatsapp Messenger For Two Days

Popular messaging app owned by Facebook, WhatsApp, has been banned in Brazil for two days.
According to a reports the app was banned for failing to comply with a court order.
“The company did not attend the court order [and so] the prosecution requested the blocking of services for a period of 48 hours, based on the law,”according to the 1 criminal court of São Bernardo do Campo in São Paulo in its statement. The CNBC reports that the case for which WhatsApp has been banned is related to the use of voice-over-internet (VOIP) calls through WhatsApp. The report states that Brazilian phone companies have argued that this classifies WhatsApp as a telecommunications company and as such should be governed by Brazilian laws. All the major mobile networks have been told to block access to WhatsApp for two days starting from 2am GMT on Thursday.
Techcrunch reports that over 93% of the Internet users in Brazil – about 110 million people, use WhatsApp so as to avoid excess phone bills. Meanwhile, Telegram, a rival messaging service which is popular for its security features, has gained excess traffic in Brazil since the court’s ruling passed. On the morning of Jan. 1, 2016, anyone with a cell phone more than five years old will be unable to access the encrypted web — which includes sites like Facebook, Google, and Twitter — according to a new plan to upgrade the way those sites are verified.
It might not be a big deal in New York or San Francisco, where a 5-year-old phone is treated as an antique, but in some parts of the developing world up to 7% of internet users could find themselves suddenly cut off from the world’s most popular sites, according to research recently published by Facebook and CloudFlare.
A full country list, showing the percentage of people who will be cut off, is on CloudFlare’s blog, but some of the most affected countries will be Yemen (5.25% of browsers), Egypt (4.8%), and China, with over 6% of the country no longer being able to safely access encrypted sites. It might not seem like a lot, but Prince says over 37 million people could be affected.
These are some of the numbers published by CloudFlare. According to cybersecurity experts, Facebook’s numbers of estimated people affected are even higher.

NANS Calls For The Revocation Of"Dr."Buhari's Degree, Insists It's Fraudulent

The National Association of Nigerian Students has called for the revocation of President Muhammadu’s Buhari’s honorary doctorate degree because he has not cleared the air on his certificate saga.

A few days ago, a Honorary Doctorate Degree was conferred on the President by the Kaduna State University.
The President of the student’s body, Comrade Tijani Usman reportedly said Kaduna State University is not authorised to confer doctorate degrees.
Usman said “It is quite unfortunate that at a time we are clamouring for re positioning of our educational sector, our leaders are doing the opposite by their actions and inactions.

“The show of shame that took place in Kaduna State University (KASU) on 12 December, 2015, is capable of making foreign Universities and corporate organizations to further undermine and disregard degrees obtained from Nigerian schools.
“We expect our leaders to be our role models by living exemplary life. How can one explain that, President Muhammadu Buhari who has not even cleared the air on his certificate saga, still went ahead to accept a fraudulent honorary degree from a university that is not authorized by National Universities Commission (NUC) to do so.
“The honorary doctorate degree conferred on President Buhari is illegal and non sequitur because,” stressing that the “KASU is not among the 22 universities accredited by NUC to award honorary degree.

“KASU was established 10 years ago, and has never graduated a PhD student.
”Section 2.0 subsection (a) of the Council of VCs Keffi declaration 2012, prohibits the award of honorary degrees to persons holding political offices.
The student body demanded that “President Muhammadu Buhari should honourably relinquish the fraudulent
degree.

“That NUC should with immediate effect sanction KASU for contravening its rules and regulations.
“That Academic Staff of Universities (ASUU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) should sanction the entire management team of KASU for making a mockery of Nigerian universities.”

NANS urged Buhari to desist from procuring fraudulent degrees and focus on governance because, our country is faced with terrorism, economic hardship, religious crises and political tension.

Former PresidentOlusegun Obasanjohas advocated modification of curriculum ofNigerianuniversities to include skills acquisition, as a way out of the high rate of graduates’ unemployment in the country.
Obasanjo made the suggestion on Tuesday inMakurdiduring a private visit to the Vice- Chancellor,BenueState University (BSU),Makurdi, Prof.Msugh Kembe.
Obasanjo lamented the high turnout of university graduates, while available jobs to accommodate them were getting slimmer by the years.
He recalled that since Nigeria had her first university in 1948 and now, the number of universities in the country had increased tremendously with millions of students graduating yearly.
Obasajo said the country had reached the stage where attention had to be focused on job creation to accommodate the large number of graduates that were coming out of universities and other tertiary institutions.
The former president advised the V-C to forge collaboration with other V-Cs for the purpose of wooing foreign investors into the country to expand the economic space.
He commended BSU for its doggedness in sustaining its College of Health Sciences in spite of the many financial challenges, which resulted to graduating its first batch of medical doctors in nine years.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the school was inaugurated by the former president in 2007 during his second tenure.
Receiving the ex-president in his office, Kembe said the visit was "auspicious" coming "barely three weeks after the induction of the first batch of medical doctors from the college.’’
He appealed to the former president to use his influence within government circles to secure funds for the university to build hostels, the senate house and install needed facilities.

Abubakar Sani Bello Niger State Governor pays students' examination fees

TheNiger State Governmentis taking steps to ensure that the standard of education is restored in the state.

GovernorAbubakar Sani Bellohas announced that the government will continue to pay the Senior Secondary School Examination fees for students in public schools by the state government.
This new directive was confirmed in a statement by Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, in Minnaon Sunday.

This development stipulates that students in their final year of Secondary school only need to choose one examination to pay for (between West African Examinations Council ( WAEC) and National Examinations Council ( NECO) and the government will pay for the other.

The governor’s spokesperson said, “In fulfilment of his promise to restore the standard of education at the basic level, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has directed that the status quo on government policy on payment of examination fees for SSSCE should be maintained”.

“With this directive, school principals are only permitted to collect fees for only one of the two examinations while government will pay for the other.
“The governor has directed strict adherence by school principals to twhe policy. Any principal that flouts the directive will be dealt with. Parents are to report any principal that may want to force them to pay for the two examinations.
“Government policy on NECO/WAEC stands and should be adhered to. School principals and parents should take note”.

JAMB Forms Tambuwal to spend N44m on Sokoto students

This development was confirmed in a statement signed by Tambuwal’s spokesperson,Mallam Imam Imam, who clarified that the forms is for the indigent students seeking admission into tertiary institution.

Violence Unknown gang murders final year student in Ondo

A unknown gang has attacked a young man,Olumuyiwa Ewarawon, and murdered him in his private hostel.
According toVanguard report,Ewarawon, Psychology studentAdekunle Ajasin University, was murderedby a gang who were suspected to be members of a para-military organization operating in the University.
Ewarawon's family has insisted that he Olumuyiwa's murderers be brought to book. They have petitioned the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mike Ogbodu.

Counsel to the family said, “The armed assailants broke into Olumuyiwa’s room while he was asleep and attacked him, thereafter, brutalized, bruised and inflicted on him fatal injuries from which he fell into coma.
“The gang dumped Olumuyiwa’s body at the General Hospital, Iwarooka Akoko before good samaritans brought the incident to the attention of the family three days later.”
They implored the Commissioner of Police to use his good office to ensure a full investigationof the murder of Olumuyiwa by the suspected Cadet Officers.

Cold-Blooded Murder Gunmen kill University lecturer and his son

Gunmen who attacked in Port-harcourt, Rivers State have murderedReturning Officerin the March 28, House of Representatives election for Obio Akpor federal constituency in Rivers State,Dr Ebirien Fubara.

Fubara, who was also a senior lecturer at the Ignatius Ajuru University, Rivers State, was killedalongside his son at his residence in the state.

Vanguardreports that the tragic incident occurred during the weekend, but police in the state has declared that they are not aware of this development.

The late Fubara was appointed a Commissioner in the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, by Governor Nyesom Wike.
The assassins allegedly stormed Fubara's residence which is located on Odili road, attacked his second son with a rod, killing him. The gunmen then went on to club Fubara until he became unconscious.

Thinking that he had passed on, the assassins fled. Dr Fubara according to reports gave up the ghost on Sunday at a hospital in Port Harcourt and his remains deposited in a morgue.

Abuja University of Technology, Abaji(AUTA) is facing a big challenge as snakes an other reptiles are threatening to take over its premises.

It was revealed that two years after the date set for the newly established universityto commence academic activities, it is yet to do so, even though most of the infrastructures have been put in place.
The school was established with the aim of increasing the number of FCT students admitted into tertiary institutions.
“Only about 5% of FCT students get admission into higher institutions. The university was proposed to correct this anomaly,” spokesperson of the FCT Education Secretariat, Anthony Ogunleye, said.
Some stakeholders have expressed concern over non-commencement of academic activities even after 85 percent of necessary facilities have been put in place in the university.
“It is quite worrisome that after billions of naira have been expended and all the required facilities have been put in place, the university."
Reacting, the chairman of the area council, Alhaji Yahaya Garba Gawu, said when he assumed office in 2013, he approached the Federal Ministry of Education and FCT Education Secretariat on the issue of university.
“I made all effort when I assumed office in 2013, on the need to see that academic activities at the university take-off but to no avail.
“But we are hoping that with the coming of the new administration, academic activities will take-off."
“Even first generation universities in Nigeria are still adding infrastructures to improve on what is already on ground. We foresee AUTA as growing continuously,” he stated.

AAUA Final Year Student Murdered By Para-military (Photo)

 The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Olumuyiwa Ewarawon, has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of a part four Psychology who was allegedly murdered by a suspected para-military organization operating in the University.

It was gathered that the deceased, who lived in a private hostel outside the school campus, was reportedly attacked by suspected cadet officers. The deceased as gathered by liveschoolnews.com.ng was the only son of his aged mother.

However, the family of the deceased is insisting that the culprits who allegedly killed their son should be made to face the wrath of the law.

The family in a petition to the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mike Ogbodu, filed by the counsel to the deceased’s father, Chief Goodluck Ibitoye Ewarawon, alleged that Olumuyiwa was attacked in his room at Shanghai Hostel in Akungba by the armed gang of seven boys under the guise of being student cadet officers.
The counsel to the family, Olufemi Meduoye, said: “The armed assailants broke into Olumuyiwa’s room while he was asleep and attacked him, thereafter, brutalized, bruised and inflicted on him fatal injuries from which he fell into coma.
“The gang dumped Olumuyiwa’s body at the General Hospital, Iwarooka Akoko before good samaritans brought the incident to the attention of the family three days later.”
They said they took the comatose body of Olumuyiwa from the hospital to Trauma Centre Ondo which instantly referred the case to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife.
The family said the boy never came out of coma and died later in the hospital.
They urged the Commissioner of Police to use his good office to ensure a full investigation of the murder of Olumuyiwa by the suspected Cadet Officers.
Also, they asked the authorities of the institution to look at the activities of some armed gang who operated under the guise of para-military to attack members of the public.
The family also asked the security forces and the state government to be alert to the activities of such organizations with a view to protecting the lives of innocent citizens.
The Police Image Maker, Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident said that the suspect is on the run and that detectives are on his trail.
He, however, assured that the suspect would soon be apprehended and made to face the law court.

164 NYSC Presidential Awardees Get Appointment Letters

Director General of NYSC Brigadier General Olawunmi Johnson flanked by beneficiaries of the Hope Alive Initiative, after receiving their automatic employment letters at the Federal Civil Service Commission, monday in Abuja.

The 164 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who bagged presidential awards between 2012 and 2014 were yesterday presented with appointment letters into the federal civil service as promised by the federal government.
Also, nine ex-corps members who sustained injuries during their service year and as a result have disabilities were also recognised under the NYSC‘Hope Alive’initiative and enlisted in the federal service.
Chairman, Federal Civil Service Commission Mrs. Joan Ayo, while presenting the employment letters at the commissions headquarters in Abuja, noted that the employment was based purely on merit, and as such did not respect federal character principles.
“We are proud to enlist you into the federal civil service because you have demonstrated those core values. Your appointment is based on merit and therefore, it has nothing to do with federal character. The appointment is also devoid of any political Influence and as such you are expected to carry out your duty without any political affiliation,”she said.
The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi, in his remarks said the government had again emphasised the importance of national service, noting that exceptional diligence by youths corps members would not go unnoticed.
Olawumi however urged the newly employment youths to maximise the opportunity provided for them by NYSC and the federal government.
“As you go into the field, you’re to be the mirror through which others are to look for good conduct. What we have just emphasised is that this country recognises the importance of service,”he said.
He also promised that anyone who sustained injuries leading to special needs during the service year would not be left to their fate.
“Should anybody suffers disability in the cause of service, and those who will in future suffer situation, such Nigerian youth shall not be abandoned to their fate.”

Fulani Kill 14, Injure Others in Jos Night Raid

At least 14 persons were on Sunday night killed
and several others injured by suspected Fulani
attackers at Kwata in Jos South Local government
area of Plateau State.
The Fulani, according to a source in the
community, Mr John Dalyop, had written to warn
the community of Kwata, Trade Centre, and Kuru
that they were not going to enjoy a peaceful
Christmas season, but the communities took the
warning lightly.
But on Sunday night the Fulani lived up to their
threat when they attacked about six houses in
Kwata leaving not less than 14 dead.
Dalyop said the attackers, who arrived the
community at about 8pm, broke into their houses
through the weak doors and windows most of
which are made from zinc roofing sheets.
"They hacked down helpless children and women,
leaving them in the pool of their blood. Others,
who tried to escape into the nearby bush, were
shot by the attackers."
When THISDAY visited the community, it was
wailing and weeping all the way, as people
that have their relatives in the community hurried
to see if they were spared.
Another source from the community, who
described the incident as dastardly, added that
the attackers communicated only in English and
Hausa languages throughout the raid, adding
that the men in the community were yet to
return home from where they had gone to relax.
He said he hid between the ridges of the farmland
all through the about 30-minutes raid, adding
that the security operatives only arrived about an
hour after the attackers had escaped into the
nearby hills.
The corpses of the victims were seen outside
littering the attacked compounds, while the
injured have been rushed to the hospital as at the
time of this report.

Okorocha Governor cancels free education for non-Imo indigenes

  GovernorRochas OkorochaofImoon Monday announced the cancellation of the free education policy extended to non-indigenes of the state studying in its tertiary institutions.
Okorocha, who announced the cancellation during an interactive session with journalists inOwerri, said the policy for Imo indigenes would still continue from primary to tertiary levels.
"The removal of the non-Imo children studying in tertiary institutions in Imo from the free education policy was due to the refusal of governors of other states to equally extend same gesture to Imo indigenes in their states,’’ he said.
According to the governor, other non-indigenes studying at primary and secondary levels would continue to enjoy the free education programme.
The governor, who commended the commitment of the teachers to the success in the education sector, said that the state was experiencing an increase in school enrolment.
"Before we introduced the free education policy in 2011, school enrolment for primary and secondary stood at 300,000 but today, the enrolment has gone up to more than 800,000 with successes in external examinations,’’ he said.
The governor said that the government had signed a memorandum of understanding with some foreign firms for the establishment of an industrial park in the Ohaji/Egbema area.
He said that the project would serve as an economic springboard for the state, adding: "This is part of the government’s projection to survive the fall in oil revenue.’’
On the concession of some government-owned agencies, Okorocha explained that the idea was to lay off ineffective, corrupt and indolent workers who were not adding value to the system.
He said that the state government would soon publish the list of culpable workers for immediate penalty.

Emma Okorie “Students in private university will transform the country” says chancellor

Mr Emma Okorie, the Chancellor of Rhema University, Aba, says private universities in Nigeria have the capacities for producing better graduates.

Speaking in a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the award night organised by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to honour the commission’s 20th anniversary and the International Human Rights Day.
As one of the honored ambassador, the chancellor believes provision of adequate amenities and teaching methods is of huge advantage to private universities.
“We take time to groom our children and very soon, private university students will revolutionise the country.
“If we transform these children, they will in turn impact positively on the public and they will transform Nigeria,’’ he said
Although, the chancellor also highlighted the need for government to look into the teaching and living standard of both private and public schools student, he also address the issue of student right.
“Every human being ought to have value for life and basic rights for livelihood; I think people should be matured not just narrow minded.
“The greatest thing that God created is human being and service to human being is the greatest service in life.
“An average student should live well and have necessary amenities for him or her to achieve the best,’’ he said.

In Kebbi Association distributes admission forms free to 60 indigent students

Banganna District Development Association in Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi said it had distributed free admission forms to 60 indigent students in the state.
AlhajiAttahiru Mohammed, the Chairman of the association made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kalgo on Sunday.
He said the forms were distributed free of charge to qualified indigent students of the area, adding that the forms were for admission into NCE and Diploma programmes.
Mohammed said the association had spent N125,000 to procure the forms that to enable the beneficiaries secure admissions into polytechnics and colleges of education.
He said the association would expand the scope of the scheme to accommodate more beneficiaries.
``We are determined and committed to promote the educational quest of our people,``he said.
Mohammed added that the association procured the forms from the monthly contribution of members.
He commended members for prompt and consistent payment of their monthly contributions.
The chairman said the first batch of the beneficiaries included 30 males and 30 females.
He said that the association would support them with small stipends when they secured admission into schools of their choice.
One of the beneficiaries,Bagudu Ibrahim, lauded the efforts of the association, assuring that they would justify the resources invested in them.

In Jigawa Government to distribute 7,000 computers to students

The Jigawa Government on Sunday said it had purchased 7,000 computers for senior secondary school students in the state.
The State Governor, AlhajiMuhammad Badaru, disclosed this at the inauguration of a Remedial Programme and Pilot Testing of E-Learning Approach in Dutse.
Badaru said that although 20,000 computers were required by the students, government had purchased only 7,000 for now.
He said that one computer would be assigned to three students until the remaining 13,000 computers were delivered to the government.
Badaru said that steps were being taken to prepare and train students on digital technology.
According to him, examination bodies in Nigeria are gradually shifting from papers and pen examination to computer-based tests.
The governor also said that his administration spent N500 million on payment of various examination fees for more that 118,000 candidates in 2015.
Badaru said plans were underway to ensure that all schools in the state, from primary to tertiary institutions, embraced electronic-learning.
Earlier in her remarks, the State Commissioner for Education, HajiyaRabi Ishaq, said that the introduction of remedial programme would help to improve quality of education in the senior secondary school.
Ishaq said that only six per cent of the students that sat for West African Examination Council (WAEC) in 2015 obtained five credits including Mathematics and English.
She said that the statistics showed that the students had not been learning well, hence the decision of the state government to urgently intervene.

JAMB Delists 4 State-Owned Institutions in Osun

Joint Admission and Matriculation Boar, JAMB delisted four state-owned tertiary institutions in Osun State on the request of the state government. Over 50,000 students offered admission into the four institutions might forfeit their admissions. Ogbeni (Governor of the State of Osun) ordered the four institutions to advertise admission for vocational and remedial studies.

Four tertiary institutions owned by Osun State Government have been delisted from its Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) website. They were said to be delisted for next two academic sessions on the request of the state government over plans to restructure them.
The institutions are Osun state Polytechnic Iree, Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, Osun State College of Education, Ila Orangun, and Osun state College of Education, Ilesa.
The President of OSPOLY Alumni, Iree who is spokesperson of the alumni bodies, Mrs. Mobola Odebode said state government had written to JAMB to delist the affected institutions for the next two years in order to give way for its proposed restructuring of the institutions.
Odebobe who was flanked by other alumni Presidents said the state government has refused to listen to the voice of reasoning on the rumoured merger of the four tertiary institutions stressing that Governor Rauf Aregbesola is trying to obliterate polytechnic education in the state.
She said that most of the affected admission seekers to these institutions had been offered provision admission for 2015/2016 academic sessions but were surprised to find out that their potential schools are no longer on the JAMB portals.
Her words: “It is painful that despite pleas from traditional rulers, host communities, political parties, students, market women, Alumni Associations and well meaning Nigerians, the government has refused to listen to he voice of reasoning on the matter. As products of institutions, we had resolved to continue the struggle to protect the existence of these institutions.
”Part of the frustrations we envisaged is already manifesting. It is before the public knowledge that the state government, last week sacked over 250 workers in Osun state Colleges of Education, Ila Orangun and Ilesa. These institutions already lack academic and non academic staff for the past five years.
”Also, over 50,000 students who applied to the four state owned tertiary institutions through Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will be denied admission as the government has written to the admission body to delist these four institutions for the next two years. This means that none of the affect state-owned institutions is on the list of JAMB.”
Odebode also disclosed that Osun state government had ordered the four institutions to advertise admission for vocational and remedial studies thus querying the government on why polytechnic should lay the role that a technical college could play more effectively.
She said “It is rather ironical that at a period that China is converting universities to polytechnics to advance the technological education as a key for the growth AF development of the country, the state of Osun government is trying to obliterate polytechnic education.
“We are so confident that the government wants to destroy the whole system for their private business benefits. We are fully aware of correspondences between some private institutions approaching the affected institutions to divert their admitted students to their various schools,” Odebode added.
The alumni body however condemned the alleged dismissal of the over 250 workers and demanded for their reinstatement.
The associations also demanded that the state government withdraw the letter written to JAMB to allow admission to the affected institutions ad allow candidates who have been offered provisional admission to continue their programmes.

No More Automatic Employment for OAU 1st Class Graduates

Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU would no longer give automatic employment to any of its first class graduate again. With 45 first class at this year convocation, it would be hard to accommodate the figure.

The Vice Chancellor, Obafemi Awowolo University, Ile Ife, Prof. Bamitale Omole, yesterday said the university would no longer offer automatic employment to graduates who make First Class degree.

Omole who linked the main reasons to dwindling economic situation biting badly, said in the past, the authority can absolve one to three first class but today the institution has had increased figures.

He noted that the idea of giving automatic employment to First Class graduates by the university was designed in the 1980s to retain them because they were not always willing to remain in the academics. But with 45 first class at this year convocation, it would be hard to accommodate the figure.

The 2015 Convocation and 67th Foundation ceremony of the University of Ibadan saw Sadiq Olayinka Olamide emerge as the best graduating student of the institution.
In a chat with newsmen, the young graduate of Veterinary Medicine attributed his success to God's favour and assistance, support of his family and undivided attention to his studies.
Talking about his social life as a student, he said;

Ministry Of Education Sets Up Committee To Investigate 10 Tertiary Institutions

The Minister of Education Malam Adamu Adamu has inaugurated an ad hoc committee to investigate 10 tertiary institutions in the country.
This followed petitions received by the ministry over allegations of abuse of due process, mismanagement, immorality, fraud and corruption, among others levelled against the management of the institutions.
The affected institutions are Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Kastina State; Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State; University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom, and Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State.
Others are University of Abuja, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Calabar; Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State; Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State and Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State.
According to minister, the responsibilities of the ad hoc committee are;
To carefully study and investigate allegations in the petitions on the institutions or individuals.
To seek to determine the veracity of claims and counter-claims by considering the circumstances and talking to as many witnesses as possible.
To meet and interview the writers of the petitions and establish the basis of their claims.
To ensure fair hearing by meeting with, and listening to explanations from all those against whom petitions have been written.

EKSU To Begin A Two Year Conversion Of HND Certificate To Degree

Authorities of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado Ekiti has concluded all necessary arrangement to begin a two-year programme that would lead to the conversion of Higher National Diploma (HND) certificate to degree.
Speaking to liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine, the vice chancellor of EKSU, Professor Oye Bandele, said on Thursday, that the university would also convoke a summit on internally generated revenue (IGR) with intention to make every faculty a viable revenue generating sources to make up for the dwindling funds accruing to the institution.
Speaking about the poor attitude of students to the payment of school fees, Bandele, who resumed on December 1, following the expiration of his predecessor’s tenure, Professor Oladipo Aina, said the nonchalant attitude to payment could frustrate his efforts in the provision of infrastructures and welfare packages.
He said the university is compiling data of students owing the university and that appropriate steps would be taken from December 20 against those that are indebted to the university.

Poly Student Dies During Abortion (Photo)

 The Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of a 20 year old National Diploma (ND) Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) student of the institution, Wunmi Agbeluyi after a herbalist allegedly helped her to terminate the pregnancy.
Liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine gathered that the decease simply identified as Wunmi Agbeluyi met her untimely death after her supposed boyfriend (the herbalist) who allegedly put the deceased in the family way and in a desperate bid to terminate the pregnancy gave her some concoction to drink in order to flush it down.

However, detectives in the Ondo State Police command have picked up the herbalist. He is currently being quizzed at the Special Investigative Bureau (SIB).
Reports from Police detectives indicated that the deceased who is now an orphan was the daughter of a herbalist. The suspect, according to findings is an apprentice to the father of the deceased when he was alive. liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine gathered that the suspect has been showing interest in the deceased before her father’s death but was hindered because the late father disapproved of the relationship.
But when the father later died, the suspect walked his way into the heart of the deceased and a relationship ensued and he begin to fend for her. Some years into the relationship, the unexpected reportedly happened and the suspect reportedly prepared a concoction for his lover to terminate the unwanted pregnancy.
It was gathered that the lovers agreed that they were not ready to be parents hence the option of an abortion. The deceased was said to have taken the concoction and after some days she develop-ed severe abdominal pain. Sensing that trouble was knocking at his door, the suspect was said to have rushed her to a private hospital where the doctor who was recently picked up and quizzed by detectives helped them to evacuate the remnants of the pregnancy.
After the flushing by the doctor in the private hospital, her persistent complaint of abdominal pain made the suspect to relocate her to the State general hospital where she later gave up the ghost.
Contacted, the Police Image Maker Femi Joseph said the suspect is in police custody. Joseph assured that the matter was still under investigation and findings would be made public.

Father In Court For Infecting His 6 Year Old Daughter With A Deadly STD

A 35-year-old man, Harrison Agu has been arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Lagos State, for allegedly defiling his 6-year-old daughter on countless occasions and in the process infecting her with a s3xually transmitted disease.
The man who resides at 23, Rotimi Omotosho Street, Isheri Osun, Lagos with his family was charged with indecent treatment of a minor, an offence that carries a seven-year imprisonment if found guilty.
The police prosecutor in the case,
Inspector Simon Imhonwa , had told the court that the father of three had been s3xually abusing his daughter for the past three years.
The accused began the assault in 2013 when the child’s mother was away for the compulsory one year NYSC.
It was during this period that the child fell ill with a serious infection in her genitals for the first time.
Thereafter, the mother of the child observed that the child’s genitals regularly produced a foul smell with discharges.
The mother took the child to the hospital where it was confirmed that she had been defiled and infected with the disease.
The mother said her child told her that Agu always asked her to remove her jeans and pants and then he will put his hand in her ‘bum bum’ (vagina) and if she refuses, he beats her.
The prosecutor said.
He further told the court that police investigations into the case further revealed that the child had been physically and emotionally abused since she was aged 3.
However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and the Magistrate,
Mrs Bola Osunsanmi, admitted him to bail in the sum of N500,000, and ordered that the file be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice.

CBN plans soft loans for one million graduates

The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, on Thursday announced that a low-interest loan scheme for one million young graduates would commence next year.
The governor said the special loan scheme, which would be managed by the central bank in collaboration with commercial banks, was part of the strategy of the Federal Government to boost the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises sub-sector and curtail unemployment among the youth.
Emefiele made the disclosure in Lagos during the opening ceremony of the seventh Annual Bankers’ Committee Retreat.
The CBN governor said, “We need to get more and more people to be employed, and we will need the support of the banks to begin to see how we lower our risk acceptance criteria to give support to our young graduates.
“In the course of the next few weeks, we will be unfolding a plan of support of the CBN to create employment for at least one million young graduates in Nigeria in 2016. That will entail support from Nigerian banks and our development institutions to see how we will channel these concessionary loans to companies that are MSMEs.”
Emefiele said the plunge in commodity prices, especially crude oil, had led to sharp fall in the nation’s revenue, adding that Nigeria and other oil exporting countries were facing hard times, a situation that necessitated the need to diversify the economy away from oil.
According to the CBN boss, the MSMEs represent the engine room of growth of any economy and there is a need for Nigeria to focus on the sector in order to weather the trying times.
He said, “The drop in commodity prices is a major thing that has affected the country. What that means is that your revenue has dropped and we are facing very serious pressure on our external reserves and exchange rate. What that does is that we all need to think about how we should come together and see what we can do as a people to shield ourselves from what is happening. So, we need to do whatever we can to protect the economy.
“We are entering a phase where we believe that the SMEs must be the only priority for growth in our economy. I must say that the Nigerian banking sector has not played an active part in supporting the SMEs, but this is not without reasons. We had issues in the past where people took loans and didn’t pay.
“The SMEs are seen as drivers of growth in any economy. Nigeria has 37 MSMEs. The CBN has a N220bn MSME facility. We have used various approaches to stimulate lending to the SMEs through that fund and I must confess that we are not doing enough on that because less than half of that fund has been disbursed today.”
Emefiele urged the bank MDs and heads of financial institutions at the meeting not to shy away from lending to the real sector, adding that the proposed loan scheme for young graduates must work.
He said, “Let’s give the young graduates a chance. The SME programme is going to be separate from the N220bn MSME fund, and I am saying if you (the banks) refuse to support, your money that we would have released through the Cash Reserve Ratio, we will take that money and lend it through any channel that will give these young graduates jobs.
“We all need to think together and agree because there is no need to release the money to you and all you do with the money is buy treasury bills. It can’t continue. We need to think about the best ways to diversify this economy away from oil.”
Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, who was also present at the opening of the retreat, disclosed that the Federal Government would be borrowing to stimulate the economy.
She said Nigeria was facing a very challenging economic situation and there was a need to focus on the SME sector to boost growth.
According to her, the government will be doing all that needs to be done on the fiscal side of the economy to ensure that the money that will be borrowed is not spent on recurrent expenditure but on capital projects.

Pupils attack teachers with guns in Osun

Some teachers at Anglican High School and Adenle Middle School in Osogbo narrowly escaped being shot when some cultists invaded the school compound and chased out teachers.
The school which houses student population of about 7,000 is made up of Anglican High School 1-5 and some students of Adenle Middle School.
Our correspondent gathered on Thursday that the crisis was caused by some students who knew they could not pass the qualifying examination the state wanted to conduct to select those whose WAEC fee would be paid by the state government.
But some said the crisis started last Friday when a student identified as Toib and his colleagues stormed the school premises with dane guns to attack a member of Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme ( O’ YES cadet) who they had issues with.
A teacher told our correspondent that Toib and his gang chased a female Home Economics teacher out of the class when the trouble started.
The invasion of the school forced other students and workers to flee.
The Friday invasion was said to have forced the school authorities to invite policemen but the cultists mobilised more members and attacked the police even on Monday.
The development, it was gathered led to the instruction given to the teachers by the Nigeria Union of Teachers that all teachers should stay away from school because of the threat to their lives.
It was further learnt that the Osun State Ministry of Education had also closed down the school to prevent any death.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Lawrence Oyeniran, when contacted declined to make any comment on the crisis.
He said, ” This is a subject I don’t want to talk about. Maybe you can see the deputy governor and ask her your questions.”
However, the NUT chairman, Mr. Amudah Wakeel, when contacted said the crisis was so serious, adding that some of the teachers were lucky to have escaped being shot dead by the rampaging cultists.
Wakeel said, ” Some cultists among the students invaded the school. They wanted to kill some of the teachers. They took dane guns to the school but our members were fortunate.
“A member of ‘OYES’ cadet was injured with an axe by the students but he survived. The police were deployed to prevent the situation from leading to loss of lives. We have instructed our members to stay away from the school because of the threat to their lives.
“The union has the power to instruct members not to go to school if their lives were threatened and this is exactly what happened. The teachers stopped going to school and the government has closed down the school.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, when contacted told our corespondent that seven suspects were arrested in connection with the crisis.
It will be recalled that a teacher at the Oosgbo High School was injured with an axe following the bloody clash between students of the school and students of Government Technical College, Osogbo, in 2014.
