JAMB to stop cyber cafés from registering candidates for its examinations

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has kicked against the recommendation by the Senate that all results for entry into tertiary institutions should last for three years.

The examination body said it will distort and delay the future of students across the country if enacted.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, said this in Abuja during the opening ceremony of JAMB-UNEB Benchmark on Item Banking.

According to him, such a policy would obstruct the education progress of students across board.

He said, “There are complexities in this thing, until we are able to clear it. When you say you will use JAMB results for three years, is it an achievement test or aptitude test? However, are we delaying his or her life? Are we postponing his or her life by telling them to stay at home? If by next year he doesn’t get the cut off points, what happens?

“I have nothing against the idea, because we will tell the children, ‘those bluffing Polytechnics and College of Education, go there and waste their time’, if it is a waste of time.”

She also told newsmen that the body had concluded plans to stop cyber cafés across the country from registering candidates for tertiary education examinations.

“In the final analysis, cyber cafes are not allowed to register candidates for a number of reasons. Cyber cafés may have their address here today, tomorrow they are somewhere else,” he emphasised.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, represented by the Director of Tertiary Education, Hajia Hindatu Abdullahi, stated that “the results of large scale examinations conducted by examination bodies, such as JAMB, NECO and NABTEB, are necessary for decision making and should therefore be credible.”

She said, “Consequently, the deployment of technology is very imperative if the results must be reliable. The role of technology in education cannot be over emphasised. Electronic item banking is consequent on the use of technology for item analysis and calibration.”

A female youth corper collapsed on Monday morning while taking part in morning drills at the NYSC orientation camp in Gbakuta Village in Oyo State.
Immediately the incident occurred, her fellow corpers rushed to carry her away from the camp grounds.

This raises major concerns. Are corpers typically screened by medical professionals on camp grounds before engaging in strenuous physical activities? Medical personnel should always be on stand by during such drills in case anyone needs emergency attention.

FG Finally Agrees To Pay N5,000 Stipend

This would be cheering news to unemployed Nigerians as the federal government has concluded plans to commence payment of N5,000 stipends.
The government explained that the initial delayed in the commencement of the payment was because it was not captured in the 2015 budget promising that it will be included in the 2016 budget.
This disclosure was made by the minister of youth and sports, Barr. Solomon Darlong when he visited the national secretariat of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Abuja, The Nation reports.
Darlong noted that arrangement for the payment will take effect from 2016.
He told newsmen that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration will fulfill every of his campaign promises including payment of N5, 000 stipends to unemployed Nigerians.
The minister said: “I want the youths to understand that every promise must be backed up by budgetary provision and our promise to pay N5,000 is not contained in the 2015 budget. So, definitely, it is going to begin in 2016 as we have made budgetary allocations for that.
“We are committed to the campaign promises of creating jobs, providing wealth creation and combat poverty. We have embedded in our manifesto things that we are translating to reality.
“Some of the youth empowerment programmes that are ongoing, we are busy reviewing them to ensure that they are more viable and people oriented. We are also looking at the possibility of realigning some of them to our vision so that in the final analysis, it will add value to the people.”
Meanwhile, Senator Ben Murray Bruce representing Bayelsa state at the National Assembly had reportedly explained to Buhari how he can effectively pay the N5,000 he promised to pay unemployed Nigerians.

Lecturers more corrupt than politicians –Rector

The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, Dr. Theresa Akande, has said tertiary institutions are central to the change agenda in Nigeria because lecturers are more corrupt than politicians.
According to her, intellectuals in higher institutions must be ready to play prominent roles if anticipated changes in certain areas of our societal life must be attained.
Speaking on Tuesday at the 10th National Conference of School of Business Studies with the theme, “Anticipated Change(s) in Nigeria: the Roles of Tertiary Institutions,” Akande lamented that youths no longer believed in hard work.
She said, “Shocking as this will sound, many of the Ad-hoc employees of INEC during elections are usually employees of tertiary institutions. Where is the change coming from? Who are the people to bring the change? Who are the implementers of the change?
“For corruption and all other frauds to be eradicated, we must look beyond those who stole in billions and trillions; it should be tackled holistically. Lecturers who inflate marks, mess around with female students, demand sex for marks or make demands for money are corrupt. In fact, they are more corrupt because they are destroying lives.
“Students who engage in examination malpractices are corrupt. Employees, who report late or absent themselves wilfully from work, are corrupt,
“So, all forms of corruption must be battled to a standstill because if this is not done, we will only be scratching the surface of our problems, instead of uprooting the very tap root.”
Akande canvassed strong synergy between the anti-graft agencies and the tertiary institutions to rid them of corruption.
The Rector challenged the School of Business Studies and participants to justify the conference by “demonstrating towards the system strong loyalty, accountability, transparency and discipline that will bring about the anticipated changes in our country.”
The Dean of School of Business Studies, Mr. Olabisi Olasehinde, said the conference was a channel for researchers to present their research works, share ideas with colleagues who have similar scholarly interests, network and cross-fertilisation to improve the overall the quality of teaching and learning.

Religion NYSC Director General Maintains His Stand on the Ban of Hijabs in Orientation Camps

Owing to the high insecurity in the country, and an equating high level of security consciousness expected, Director-General of theNational Youth Service Corps (NYSC)Brigadier-General, Johnson Olawumihas banned Muslim women from wearing hijabs (Islamic veil) at NYSC orientation camps. Consequently, some group of muslim youths attempted protests pointing out that the rule is against their religious rights. However, the DG of NYSC insisted the ban stands and there will be no going back despite the complaints of a Muslim group who came to him to table their petitions against the prohibition. Speaking to the NYSC DG, representatives of the Muslim group said,
 Members of the NYSC are Nigerians who have contributed to the development of this country; female corps members deserve protection by the NYSC. We don’t believe that a female corps member putting on hijab has done any wrong against the Act establishing the NYSC. So they deserve the respect of the NYSC. We have traveled far and wide and visited different camps. Why are the rights of female corps members being infringed upon. We are here to register our displeasure.”
The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi, who stated this when he received the League of Muslim Youths who came to lay their complaints concerning the ban in Da’awah yesterday in Abuja, expressed regrets that terrorists in recent times, have used ladies who wear long hijabs with suicide belts underneath, to kill people. He pointed out while reiterating NYSC’s tremendous respect for the religion and tribe of every Nigerian, that the scheme also had the responsibility of protecting the lives of corps members under its watch during the orientation camping exercise. In his response, Brigadier-General, Johnson Olawumi said,
Under my leadership, the NYSC will accord respect to every corps member, irrespective of tribe and religion. The incident in Benue State was caused by the use of long hijab. The security situation in the country is tough. There is the danger of somebody using hijab for other reasons. There have been cases where young girls put on hijab and eventually turn to suicide bombers. Boko Haram members know how to get at whoever they want as target. That is why we frown at the wearing of long hijab. Please call on all your Muslim youths to be patient and adhere to it, just for a short period during the camp. We frown at long hijab because of the security implication.”
Olawumi, however, encouraged the female corps members to use the short hijabs while they are in camp and solicited the understanding of the league in enlightening the youth on the matter in orientation camps.

OAU Students Raise Alarm Over Poor State Of Facilities

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), have raised alarms over the debasing state of facilities within the citadel of learning.

Daily Trust reports that the lamenting students likened their hostels to prison yards

Omotayo Akande, president of the OAU Student Union, said:“It is oblivious the horrible living condition in the hostels and we as Students’ body is not relenting in the struggle for the welfare of the students. Speaking with Daily Trust, the Student Union President said that there is need to renovate the hostels and guard against overcrowding.”

Akande noted that:“Students are complaining of bedbugs. There are no good toilets and we are subjected to a condition that is not favourable to learning. In fact, we are afraid of an outbreak of diseases on this campus”
Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, spokesman for the university, in reacting to the development, faulted the students’ claims.
Olarenwaju blamed the students for abusing the facilities in their hostels. He said the students overcrowd the hostels and use the facilities beyond limits.
OAU has 8 halls of residence including: Fajuyi, Awolowo, Angola and E.T.F for male students, while Moremi, Akintola, Alumni and Mozambique halls of residence are for female students.

However, evident on the long stretch of buildings were features of dilapidation. There were signs that the facilities lacked maintenance

FUTA 2014/2015 Best Graduating Students Emerge (Photo)

The best graduating student for the 2014/2015 academic session of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Osakpolor Eki Obakpolor has attributed his success to adopting a consistent reading pattern from day one at the Institution.
Obakpolor who graduated with a First Class from the Department of Physics with a 4.8GPA said the grace of God also enabled him to attain the feat.
He said “at first I never thought I could achieve this, but I told myself let me just try to put in effort to get a good result. I recorded 4.68 GPA in my 100 level first semester and I determined to build it up. God helped me and I am grateful to Him. I strongly believe in possibility and I make bold to say making a First Class in any discipline is not impossible with God on one’s side and persistent reading habit”. He commended the contributions of his teachers to his success, saying “FUTA is blessed with good lecturers. They taught us well and built us for the future. Anything I become today is by the training I received from my lecturers. I also commend my friends and course mates who gave me access to materials related to my field”.
Osakpolor Eki Obakpolor
Speaking on his plans after graduation, he said he wants to go into research activities, to make innovative discoveries in Physics which he called the bedrock of Science. He said such discoveries can be built up on for the good of the society.
Counselling other youth, he said “God has deposited in everyone exceptional ability to excel in everything one is doing. One just need to put in a little effort, crown it with hard work and prayers”.
Obakpolor also commended the standard of FUTA. He said “I believe FUTA is going places. I appreciate the way the Institution is building up youth for the future. This gives us the confidence that wherever we find ourselves we will be able to adapt easily to situations. FUTA always give us the platform to express our ability and stand out wherever we find ourselves”. He also thanked his parents and siblings for their support towards his study.
“We still have mountains to climb and obstacles to overcome”
Text of the Valedictory Address delivered by Osakpolor Eki Obakpolor of the Department of Physics , 2015 Best Graduating Student with CPGA of 4.84
On finding out that I have been selected to give the valedictory speech, I had but one worry and that’s whether I would be tall enough to reach the microphone. Betty Reese said “If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito”. In this I have found consolation. Therefore, I am honored and excited to be here, not only to represent this awesome graduating class of the Federal University of Technology, Akure 2014/2015 academic session, but to stand in the exact spot where great scholars have stood.
The author of Harry Porter, J.K Rowling in her commencement address to Harvard graduates of 2008 said “some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something”. That was my consolation on failing my first Post UTME. In the word of Theodore Roosevelt, “the boy who is going to make a great man, or is going to count in any way after-life, must make up in his mind not merely to overcome a thousand obstacles, but to win in spite of thousand repulses and defeats”. Five years ago, on gaining admission into this institution, I was excited and anxious at the same time – excited about the prospect of studying Physics in the Nation’s leading University of Technology and anxious about what the five years would hold. But here I am, with gratitude to the almighty God for making me a recipient of His grace.
While not forgetting the place of diligence and discipline in this achievement, I would not overlook the place of my family; family where life begins and love never end. It was there I learnt to strive for excellence no matter what. At home, biblical and ethical principles for attaining good success in all facets of life were instilled. I am deeply grateful to my parents, Pastor and Mrs. Moses Eki Obakpolor, my twin sister, Blessing, my younger sister Joy and my other siblings for their support this far.
It has been a long five years, but here we are, ready to graduate. We worked hard to get to this point, but we didn’t do it by ourselves. We owe a huge debt of gratitude.
To our parents, guardians, family and friends, thank you for supporting us in more ways than it’s possible to count and for your sacrifices.
To our Chancellor, Pro Chancellor, Vice-chancellor and all the Principal officers of this University, thank you for keeping things running smoothly and making this institution the pride of all.
To our Lecturers, thank you for your unrelenting efforts in imparting knowledge. Your sacrifices were beyond the call of duty.
To our Proprietor/Proprietress, Principals and Teachers in secondary schools, thank you for laying a solid foundation upon which we built on here.
Behind each graduate, there must have been at least a dozen people providing support in at least a dozen ways. Thank you for coming to share in our joy. We will pay the debt of gratitude forever.
Class of 2015, be proud of yourselves. Be proud of every test and exams you aced. Be proud of the times you had to carry the MEE board even though it later became more of a burden. Be proud of the times you had to spend your weekends in the school farm because in that you have learnt the indispensability of agriculture to man’s sustenance. Be proud of the times you had to be awake all night in preparation for a test. Also be proud of the times you wrote tests unprepared for. Class of 2015; be proud of the times you had to put off your own work to help a friend. Be proud of the times you couldn’t answer certain questions because in that you have learnt that no one knows it all. Be proud of when you forgave yourself for a bad grade and gave yourself a break. Be proud of yourself when you do get the job or win the contract because in more ways than you can imagine, you are contributing to national accomplishments. Be proud of all your accomplishments, because in life, it is not about outdoing others but about being your best. But most importantly, be proud that today, you mark an important milestone in your journey towards fulfillment. Today, we are graduates; tomorrow, we are alumni.
We are here today on the precipice of the future. It’s not a distant reality anymore. It begins here. It begins today. Today my friends we still have mountains to climb and obstacles to overcome, we cannot stop striving yet. As we climb up today, life will get more challenging but when life’s challenges overwhelm us, we must remember our ABC- the ABCs of life. We should take the A and Accept the challenge; the B and Believe in ourselves; the C and Confess our hopes and dreams; the D, the Determination to achieve our dreams; E, Expect some obstacles on our way; F, we should Fight until we finish our course; G, we should Get God on our side; H, Have a hand in helping the leadership; I, Inspire someone else; and J, take Jesus on our journey; we should K, Keep on keeping on; and L, be Leaders; M, Make every day count and N, Never give up; we must O, Overcome our obstacles; and P, Put on our best performance; we must Q, Quit quitting; and R, Run the race with patience; S, Strive on; while T, Trusting in the Lord, we should U, Use our talent; and V, Value our time; W, Wait for understanding; then X, X-ray, our own lifestyles; Y, Yearn to achieve all that we seek; and Z, be Zealous when reaching the top! Let’s go out there and serve as hope to others. Let’s create a platform for other to succeed because in this, we would not only make our family and friends proud, but our names would be engraved in the hearts of generations unborn. Let’s allow the spark in our hearts to give birth to flames of excellence. We owe it to our family, our University, our country, our God, and most importantly, ourselves to pursue our wildest dreams.
As we leave today, let us remember these old words of Seneca “As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters”. Let’s go out there and live good life. Congratulations once more, Class of 2015.

AAUA Signs MoU with Alabama State University

As part of efforts to further deepen the integrity of its academic programmes, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, on Wednesday last week, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Alabama State University, ASU, USA.
The MoU, which calls for student and Faculty exchanges, was signed during a brief meeting at ASU between ASU President, Gwendolyn E. Boyd, and the Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Professor Igbekele Amos Ajibefun.
Professor Ajibefun expressed happiness at the partnership, noting that AAUA has students in America and Europe who are all doing well in their various fields of human endeavour.
The VC said, “We are very excited to develop this partnership with Alabama State University. I think that we can learn so much from each other, and our students can develop good relationships and experience a new culture. We have students in America and Europe, and they are doing well.
“We want to give our student a global experience so that they can compete globally. We also believe your students will learn from being in our environment. We also look forward to what we can do jointly to afford opportunities for our universities. Our University has been named one of the best in Nigeria and its global mission is similar to ASU’s.”
ASU President Gwendolyn said, “Alabama State University is very internationally focused.
We have more than 40 countries represented in our student body and Faculty. We are open to new international relationships because we know that the students that we are training now will operate in a global environment.
“They will travel all over the world. They will be engaged in international business and research; so, the experiences they have while in college will be of great benefit to them in the future. We are very excited about the exchange of ideas and the opportunity for our young people to learn about various cultures, having an opportunity to travel abroad, to study abroad and hopefully teach abroad, as we bring our continents closer together.”

Soyinka "Students should not wear uniforms that depict their religion"

Nobel Laureate,Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Monday, 23rd November, expressed his displeasure at students who wear faith-based uniforms in schools.

He stated that students should not be allowed to wear uniforms depicting their religious affiliations to schools across the country as this will only cause division among them.

Soyinka made this statement at the inauguration of a N750m school built by theOsun State Governmentin Ejigbo; a school which was named after him.

He expressed his gratitude for this honor bestowed on him byGovernor Rauf Aregesola, but warned against students causing division among themselves along religious lines.

He explained that this "holier-than-thou' belief was one of the factors that led to the abduction of the Chibok girls by Boko Haram insurgents.

He said, “One of the ways we can reduce this fatalistic sense of holiness is to reduce the element of difference. I wish to implore that we do not distinguish our children by their religions.”

He also expressed his displeasure at the fact that the Chibok girls are still missing;

“ It is a shame that the nation cannot account for over 200 girls in Chibok. I sympathise with the religious policy of governments in school; children must not be brought up feeling that religion inhibits knowledge."

Aregbesola inaugurated the school established by his administration in Ejigbo.

The governor applauded Soyinka as the greatest scholar in Africa.

According to reports, TheWole Soyinka Government High School, Ejigbo is a 3,000-capacity complex with 72 classrooms of 49 square-metres, each capable of sitting 49 students and has six offices for study groups.

It is equipped with six laboratories, 18 toilets for girls and 18 for boys, one science library, one arts library, facility manager’s office, a bookshop and a sick bay.

I killed my boss for Xmas money – Guard

A security guard, who was recently arrested by the Imo State Police Command for allegedly stabbing his boss to death and stealing his belongings, said he committed the dastardly act because he wanted to celebrate Christmas lavishly.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the guard, David Kwaguru, and two of his friends killed a 25-year-old final year Civil Engineering student of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Imo State, Mr. Innocent Ndukwe, at the deceased’s residence at 18 Enuwa Street, Egbu in the Owerri North Local Government Area of the state.
According to the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, after killing the suspect, the security guard and two of his friends, Friday Ayuba and Francis Amos, made away with the deceased’s Nissan Pathfinder with number plate, KRD109AD, two plasma TV sets, one home theatre and other valuables.
Confessing to the crime, the security guard said that the rationale behind their evil act was that they needed money to celebrate Christmas next month.
He said, “Since oga Ndukwe had the money (because of his wealthy parents) and expensive household electronics, we decided to kill him, put the devices inside his vehicle and drive to Plateau State where we come from.
“We waited and monitored him. And when he went into the toilet, we broke the door open, tied his hands and legs and started stabbing him all over his body. We stabbed him several times in the neck and abdomen so that he would die quickly. After killing him, we drove off in the jeep only to be nabbed by the police at West End Road in Owerri.”
Also speaking, an accomplice, Ayuba, said that it was Amos that first struck the victim in the neck while he stabbed the student in the stomach.

While parading the suspects, the CP said the police control room got a call on the incident and policemen raced to the crime scene.
He said, “As a result, the assailants who tried to escape were subsequently apprehended along West-End old Nekede road, Owerri.”
He said that the deceased was found in a pool of blood in a toilet at his residence when policemen arrived.

Enugu State University Sacks 153 Lecturers

THE authorities of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Enugu has sacked 153 lecturers from its employ.
Although no official reason was given for the exercise, but it was gathered that the sack, which also affected a Professor and a Reader cut across various departments in the university.
A statement announcing the sack dated November 23 and signed by the Registrar, Leonard Khama, and made available to Tribune Online, said: “I am directed to inform you and you are hereby informed that the university is presently not
positioned to employ you.
“You should, therefore, hand over university property in your possession to the Head of Department. If, however, your services are required in the future by the university, you will be informed accordingly.

NCC To Sanction MTN, Airtel, Globacom Over Auto Data Service Migration

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) yesterday said it would sanction MTN, Airtel and Globacom for defying its directive on automatic migration to Pay-As-You-Go data bundle.
The Commission made this known in its ‘2015 third quarter Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Report’ obtained pasted on its website.
NCC said it had continued to receive complaints from subscribers on automatic migration of data bundle package to Pay-As-You-Go Billing on depletion of their data bundle.
‘’Consequently and pursuant to section 53(1) of the NCC Act, 2003. The commission on 3rd August 2015 directed all mobile service operators to comply with the data bundle directions.
According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), NCC said “where a subscriber’s data bundle account is fully depleted before the due date, service providers should notify the subscriber via SMS, giving information regarding the tariff/ billing rate for automatic migration.
‘’That all service providers should henceforth stop auto-migration of subscriber’s data service to the Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) account upon depletion of the data bundle account, except with the express consent and authorisation of the subscriber via SMS.’’
NCC said that a follow-up compliance check was carried out which revealed that Etisalat was in compliance with the directives, adding that Etisalat through SMS, notified its subscribers of depletion of their data bundle accounts, before due dates.
The telecoms regulator also said that Etisalat sought the consent of subscribers before automatically migrating them to the Pay-As-You-Go data service.
It pointed out that ‘’Globacom is in compliance with Direction No. One as subscribers receive SMS detailing tariff rate for auto-migration on depletion of their data bundle, stating however, that Globacom failed to obtain express consent from subscribers before migration to PAYG and therefore in violation of Direction No. Two.
NCC explained that ‘’MTN is in compliance with Direction No.One, but failed to highlight the tariff rate for PAYG billing. In addition, data service is not suspended on depletion of the data bundle account even without an authorisation via an SMS from the subscriber.
It said ‘’Airtel is not in compliance with the above directions, stating that consequent upon the above, “the Commission has issued a notice of intention to sanction the concerned service providers.”

Arsenal Fan Beats Wife To Coma For Taunting Him Over Loss

A man in Uganda is wanted by police for assault after he beat his wife to coma because she taunted him over Arsenal’s loss to West Brom on Saturday.
The man identified as Abbas Mukobere reportedly thrashed his wife, Ketty Mbali, who is a Manchester United fan, with a cane until she fainted, News24 reported.
Neighbours said they heard the woman crying for help and attempted to see what was happening inside the couple’s apartment but could not do so as the door was locked from behind.
They then went to the window and saw Mukobere beating his wife with a cane.
By the time they were able to break the door, Mukobere had escaped through the back door, while his wife had fainted from the impact of the severe beating.
Neighbours then took her to hospital where she was treated for a fractured arm and bruises on the face, News24 reported.
When she was asked to explain the details of the quarrel, Mbali said: ”As usual, I started joking about my team Manchester United winning and his team Arsenal losing. It seems he was drunk and upset by his team’s loss that he started beating me up.”

NOUN "We can admit 1million students annually" - VC

Vice chancellor of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe, has disclosed that the university has the capacity to admit over one million new students annually. He stated that this has been made possible through its open and distance learning education.

Tenebe made this revelation at the unveiling of the university’s new goodwill ambassador, Ahmed Is.
Tenebe said Nigeria records an excess of 1million students yearly from prospective university admission seekers due to the inability of the existing 124 universities to admit above the current 500,000 carrying capacity.
According to him, NOUN now has presence and learning points in all the 36 states in Nigeria, plus the Federal capital.

“124 universities cannot only admit 500,000 students, the carrying capacities of these universities is always stretched. NOUN can admit 1million students and they will get the same quality education.
“Any student graduating from NOUN will be graduating at par with students of other universities across Nigeria,”Tenebe said.
He added that getting educated through open and distance learning prepares graduates for work with less supervision in the future.
He added that countries like China, India, Indonesia, United Kingdom and the United States of America are using this means to educate their millions of citizens.
While urging Nigerians to take advantage of the democratised system of learning at the university to increase literacy level in the country as NOUN will have a study centre in each of the 774 LGAs in the next 15 years.

LASU Management says it has the right to increase fees

TheLagos State University (LASU) management are standing by their decision to increase acceptance fees from N10, 000 to N20, 000.

The University's students union have protested against this increase and demanded for a ‎reversal of the fees with immediate effect to prevent crisis.

The LASU authorities, in response, have maintained that they have the right to review and increase fees, aside tuition fees which the State government was in charge of.

LASU registrar, Mr Akin Lewis made this known while speaking to press on Friday.
Lewis said that the university only expected the new students who had been offered provisional admission, to pay an acceptance fee.

“This is not the first time new students are paying acceptance fee, so, an increment should not be an alarm, the management has the right to review and increase fees.

“This is not an increment in tuition fees, but an increment in acceptance fee and the management has reasons for its decisions,” he said.

Meanwhile, the students' union, has released a statement which asked new students not to pay these fees until the issue is rectified.

They insisted that making this decision without informing the union is wrong.

”The recent increment of the new students’ acceptance fee and indigenous verification fee, from N10, 000 and 1,000 respectively to 20,000 and 5,000 came as a shock to LASUSU.

“We state emphatically that the management coming out with this increment at this time is a calculated attempt on the part of the management.
“The idea is to introduce what we tag as a “divide and rule” principle between students and the newly admitted students, which the students’ union firmly and judiciously stands against.

“This is also an attempt to bring back the already solved issue of school fees hike; an increment in the acceptance fee will surely lead to an increase in the school fees of new students, which we reject in its totality,"it said.

Organisation now have internship programmes for this purpose because it gives them a chance to train you and know how you fit with the team before making the commitment to hire you.

4. Find a mentor: You have to find someone who is doing what you want to do. You can try advanced search on LinkedIn for the company and field where you want to work. For instance, if you want to work in marketing and MTV is your dream employer, enter those two search terms (Marketing and MTV) and see who comes up. Contact them and as for a chance to meet. This could feel like a long shot, but try with as much people as you can, you only need one "Yes." If you get one mentor, it can change everything for you
5. Double-check your application:Before you hit submit, triple-check everything for spelling, syntax, and grammar. Also, be sure that you have the right details in the right applications. Create separate folders on your computer for each company so that you don’t proudly state how excited you are to work at Company X when your application is for Company Y.

Bank of Industry Company trains 150 NYSC Members

According to reports, 150 National Youth Service Corps members are being trained by the Bank of Industry (BoI)under its N2bn Graduate Entrepreneurship Fund (GEF) scheme, in Katsina.

The corps members, taken from six states, were selected from the North-west zone and are among the 1,000 successful applicants nationwide.

Mr. Rasheed Olaoluwa, managing director of BoI, disclosed that the initiative is aimed at empowering Nigerian youths. He said that the the government alone and the private sector cannot solve the issue of unemployment in the country.

He also noted that the training programme was organised for the beneficiaries of the GEF scheme, to give them first-hand drilling on how to successfully run a profitable business.

He stated that while the training would help those who already have business plan but could not translate it to bankable project, the bank’s business development experts would help to fine-tune those who were already in business.

“Although the youth corp members are the direct beneficiaries of the GEF initiative, the entire nation will benefit from it. This is because when the youth are developed, the whole of the environment is transformed,” he said.

UNILORIN May Deploy Drones for Exams Monitoring

If the authorities of the University of Ilorin accede to suggestions by members of the institution’s Drone Team, it is highly probable that the University will, in future, monitor examinations conducted within the campus with drones.
The drones, developed by a team coordinated by Prof. Sulyman AbdulKareem of the Department of Chemical Engineering, added colours to the just concluded 40th anniversary/31st convocation ceremonies of the University.
Other members of the Unilorin Drone Team include Dr. M.T. Yakubu of the Department of Biochemistry; Dr Babalola of the Department of Physics; Engineer Eric and Mr. Ahmed, both of the Department Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
In separate interviews with Unilorin Bulletin last Thursday (November 12, 2015), the Co-ordinator of the team, Prof. AbdulKareem, and another key member of the team, Dr. Yakubu, said that drones can be used to monitor the conduct of examinations in future as well as general campus surveillance in conjunction with the security personnel”.
According to Prof. AbdulKareem, “the use of drones has come to stay because where you don’t want to endanger human life, a machine, which a drone is, can go there and still get the information you need”. He pointed out that “drones, rather than infringing on human rights, actually protect human rights because the man who wants to do evil and knows that a machine can remotely capture his act, will not likely do it”.
The Unilorin Drone Team Coordinator, who is the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, disclosed that some academic departments in the University have started showing interest in the use of the drone. He said, “I believe that apart from giving practical knowledge to those in Geography, Electrical Engineering and Physics, virtually any Department that may have a reason to capture events beyond what is in front of the camera, which has to be aerially covered, can use the drone.”
Prof. AbdulKareem urged the University administration to challenge people to do more “because there are lots of students who are eager to learn and who have ideas that they can put into practice if they have good supervision. He said, “I believe it is a matter of encouragement. Most Nigerian universities should be able to do wonderful things and make major breakthroughs”, noting that some students were co-opted into the team to learn how to operate or fly the drones.
The Drone Team Coordinator enjoined the newly appointed ministers especially for the areas of science and technology, “to see a need for us to self-develop, self-evolve, and self-emancipate as a nation”. He said, “For a long time now, we have relied on personnel from foreign countries to bail us out of every technical problem we get into, but the issue is that, we have so many Nigerians that are trained abroad that are here and even those who have not left the country that are equally talented that should be encouraged to do wonderful things for the nation.”
Prof. AbdulKareem maintained that the new ministers “should see their appointments as a chance of working with the academics in the educational institutions to promote what will be good for the nation, to make the nation as a whole self-reliant on personnel that are available locally.”
In the same vein, Dr. Yakubu said, “We can also use the drone to monitor what is happening on our borders; we have a very vast amount of land, and we can use it to track activities that are going on there. Invariably, we can use the drones to cover the entire University and in getting information to the appropriate quarters. ”
The Biochemistry Lecturer, who urged the University to ensure that the use of drones on the campus remains functional and sustained, advised that “it should not only be used during the convocation as we did last time, but we should put it to all-round use on campus.
Dr Yakubu said that drones can be used to monitor the conduct of examinations in future; we can use it for surveillance on the campus and when you look at all these, it will be of advantage to the whole University”, he stressed.

Police arrest 21 homosexual students in Delta

Police detectives in Asaba, Delta State, have arrested 21 students who have been allegedly involved in same sex activities.
It was reliably gathered that the two state- owned polytechnics (names withheld) where the suspects were arrested, were a beehive of perverse sexual acts as male students engage in same sex activities for financial gains.
Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects, said the police acted on a tip off. She said, “We had it on good authority that the male students allegedly engaged in anal sex.
The suspects, upon interrogation, made useful statements to the police while investigations are ongoing.” Investigation revealed that homosexuality has been on the rise in the two institutions and culprits were also members of various cult groups.
Meanwhile, the police in Obiaruku have arrested the leader of a notorious cult group who allegedly had been terrorising the community in the last one year.
The cult member, it was reliably gathered, had allegedly led other members of the group to attack unsuspecting residents of the community and inflicted injuries on them.
Confirming the arrest, the state PPRO, Celestina Kalu, identified the suspect as Ikechukwu Azubuike, a 19-year-old school dropout. She said he would be charged to court on completion of investigation.

BREAKING NEWS: MASSOB Faction Claims Nnamdi Kanu Has Been Murdered

A faction for the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, (MASSOB), has alleged that the Director of Biafra Radio, Nnamdi Kanu, has been killed.
Kanu has been in detention for over a month since he was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Security, in Lagos. Kanu, who’s being charged on three counts of criminal conspiracy, intimidation and belonging to unlawful society, was absent at the resumed hearing of his trial on Wednesday, November 18.
However, on Saturday, November 21, the factional MASSOB claimed that Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, may have been murdered. MASSOB factional Director of Information, Comrade Uchenna Madu, revealed via a statement that Kanu’s murder was disclosed to the group by security operatives who’re sympathetic to the Biafra agitations. The group while threatening of rebellion should Kanu be truly dead, insisted that he must appear in court on Monday, November 23, by all means possible. “Factional MASSOB has discovered that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu detained by Nigeria has been murdered in Abuja. “Information to Biafra Intelligence Agency (BIA), through operatives sympathetic to the Biafran cause revealed it to us. Pro-Biafran groups may not believe it until Monday, Nov 23 when Nnamdi will be arraigned in court.
“The cause information we are receiving from Abuja is not healthy, we’re still waiting till Monday. Nnamdi Kanu is the arrowhead of the Biafra agitation.

A coalition of Non Indigenous Students of the Rivers State University of Science&Technology carried out a peaceful protest in the school premises.

The protest was due to the 300% difference between indigene fees and that of students who are indigenes of Rivers state. The Non Indigenous Students reportedly vented their streets of the school to vent their frustration on Wednesday, 18th November.

One of the students who spoke with Pulse disclosed that non-indigenes of the states are paying N82, 000 as tuition, while those from Rivers state pay a total of N18, 000.

According to the aggrieved student, former governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi reduced the fees last session and all students were paying the same amount as fees but since Governor Nyesom Wike took office with the new Vice Chancellor of the school, Prof Blessing Didia, the fees for non-indigenes were increased while those for indigenes stayed the same.

The students are now calling on the Federal Government to see to it that the situation in the school is fairly rectified.

23-Year-Old Student Breaks Record In University Of Ibadan

The Nation reports that a 23-year-old student got 8 out of 11 possible distinctions in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

The indigene of Iragbiji in Osun state beat the record of seven distinctions set some years ago and became the overall best graduating student of the university.
Organizers and participants of the convocation ceremony held at the International Conference Centre of the university were shocked and amazed when his name was called 31 times during the prize presentation.

Speaking with The Nation, Sadiq explained how he achieved such success and why he chose veterinary medicine and not medicine or surgery.

“Years ago, University of Ibadan practised a mode of admission where your credentials are graded; basically your JAMB and O-level results. Unfortunately, my O-Level was not included, so my weighted average was so low. It was 27.5; too low for the course I wanted. Veterinary medicine was neither my first nor second choice. It was an alternative as ‘change of course’ due to what I call irregularities, which prevented me from being admitted for Basic Medical Science,”he said.
When asked how he managed to break the record and become the best graduating student, Sadiq explained:
“I knew I was going to do very well in the university, but being the best overall student of the year…sincerely I did not think of it. I had some B grades despite the fact that I still scored highest in those courses. The number of distinctions attainable in the veterinary school, University of Ibadan is 11 and I made 8. The other three courses were B grades.”

The talented young man revealed that after his youth service he is planning to enroll for a postgraduate course in diagnostic medicine in the USA.
“Being a first class student takes hardwork, focus and prayer to sustain.

Some are gifted, but work is still required. Prayer is a necessity if we want to survive the hurdles of life; I am a Muslim and I pray five times daily. Distractions would always surface, but when you are focused, you will be able to achieve many things, even with the numerous distractions in the university.”

“In veterinary school, 24 hours is never enough. Going to class Mondays to Fridays, from 8am to 5pm; extra-classes on weekends, numerous tests from various departments…It is impossible to thrive without burning the midnight oil,”he said.

Although Sadiq dedicated all his life to studying and had no time for romance, he has no regrets as God always helps him to go through hard times.

Candidates use text language in exams – WAEC

Some candidates who sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations use text message abbreviations the West Africa Examinations Council has said.
According to WAEC, candidates use “u” for “you” in the English Language paper while some others are unable to correctly apply principles and input data in Mathematics and Computer Studies.
The Nigeria Examinations Committee of WAEC made these observations at its 60th meeting held in Lagos.
The NEC is the highest decision-making organ of the WAEC on examination-related matters in Nigeria and meets twice a year to review reports on the conduct of its examinations.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, NEC said, “The general weaknesses of candidates in the various subjects as outlined include poor command of language, and indiscriminate lifting of portions of set passages as answers. Candidates also use text message abbreviations “u” for you in English Language; there are spelling errors in Islamic Studies – Igbo, Ibibio, Biology; Computer Studies 2, Foods and Nutrition, Catering Craft Practice 2 & 3.
“Poor mastery of English Language and other languages in Arabic; English Language; Islamic Studies; Efik; Igbo; Yoruba; Literature-in-English and Foods & Nutrition, poor knowledge of prescribed texts in Arabic, Igbo, Ibibio, Yoruba and Literature-in-English 2 & 3, misinterpretation of questions in Literature-in-English 2 & 3, Marketing; Health Education 2 and Catering Craft Practice 2& 3.”
Advising candidates to read relevant textbooks and novels in various subject areas and practise map drawing as well as labelling against future examinations, the committee also urged teachers to endeavour to cover their subject syllabuses while preparing candidates for the examination.
The committee also advised teachers to participate in the WASSCE Coordination and Marking Exercise to boost their understanding of the examination.

The Council of Legal Education, the authority that runs the  Nigerian Law School, has released the result statistics of  the Bar Final examinations for regular students conducted in September 2015.

The result of the September 2015 Bar Final Examinations for regular students, as approved by the Board of Studies of the Council of Legal Education was released on the School Website: Nigerian Law School Bar Part II Result Is Out (Final) – 2015 . The breakdown of the result is as follows:

A statement signed by Dr. Olanrewaju Onadeko, the school’s Director-General, declared that 3,273 out of the 4,610 students passed the examination.

Dr. Onadeko said 170 (3.7 percent) had conditional pass, while 1,167 (25.3 percent) failed.

He added that eight students had First Class.

The First Class candidates are – Okwor Kenneth Dominic, Uche Eresi Tracy and Okezie Justice Ndubuisi all from the Lagos campus of the school.

Abuja campus produced two namely – Bukoye Temitope Olayemi and Bandawa Ntayi Anfani.

Two candidates – Edun Halimat Temitope and Aare Adejoke Kafayat were from the Enugu campus.

Amoo Oluwatobi Ayobode was the only First Class student from the Kano Campus.

The Call to Bar ceremony has been fixed for December 15 and 16 in Abuja.

NYSC Corps to resume 3 batches in 2016

    
The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC recently announced that they will be going back to dispatching 3 batches of corp members in 2016.

The practice of having three batches was changed in 2015 when they had two batches in two streams.

The Management of the scheme had attributed the 2-batch-a-year change made earlier this year to lack of enough funds to run three batches.

The management made this statement on their Twitter page.

"We are going back 2 having our 3 batches & tentatively 2016 Batch A Orientation course,will be in between Feb & March."

They also have an explanation for the 2-batch method that  was introduced this year.

"We had two batches ds year b’cos our budget was too small & hadn’t enough fund but now NYSC is on Zero Budgeting we’ll run d 3 batches."

Meanwhile, NYSC is informing 2015 batch ‘B’ stream ‘I’ prospective corps members who were unable to attend camp, that the Management has concluded plans to allow them to join stream II.

They are required to log into their NYSC portal and re-print Call-up letters as the Stream II reporting date will be reflected on the new call-up letters.

These corpers are urged comply and report to Camp on the stipulated dates because missing stream II means missing Batch B.

Ambode LASU unions laud governor for proposing single 5-year tenure for VC

TheLagos State University(LASU) Staff and Students Union on Wednesday commended the state government for proposing a single term of five years for the post of the institution’s Vice-Chancellor.
Gov.Akinwunmi Ambodehad on Nov. 15, sent the institution’s 2015 Amendment Bill to the State House of Assembly for ratification.
This is contained in a statement by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde.

The unions told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) inLagosthat the development was a welcome idea.
‎
Mr Saheed Oseni, Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian ‎Universities (SSANU), LASU chapter, said the bill when passed would go a long way in stabilising the institution.
Oseni said that the single term tenure for the vice-chancellor would also help to eliminate the lingering crisis in the institution because it would caution the substantive to be well behaved.
"The person coming ‎on board will behave well within his or her period, knowing that his name will either be recorded in the good or bad book of the people,’’ he said.

Mr Alfred Agusuo, Chairman, Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), LASU chapter‎ also commended the governor for doing the needful and yielding to the yearnings of the unions.
Agusuo said that the bill when implemented would lead to a reduction in the problems facing the institution as it did in federal universities within the country.
"Initially, the Federal Government was also operating a four-year renewable tenure in the federal universities which led to incessant crisis in most of the institutions.
"However, since the implementation of the single term of five years tenure, the problems in the federal universities had reduced to the barest minimum.
"And I am sure the same will happen in LASU,’’ he said.

Mr Adeyemi Onikoro, Presidents, Lagos State University Students Union (LASUSU), also said the proposed bill was what obtained in other universities.
"This is an agreement that was agreed upon by all states, federal government and academic staff unions and as such, no state is expected to breach the agreement,’’ he said.
Onikoro urged the governor to as a matter of urgency look into the other issues affecting the institution as the issue of the vice-chancellor was not the only burning issue.
"We should not forget that this is not the only issue we have in LASU; there are other issues that call for attention of the visitor to the ‎university.
"We implore the visitor to the university, Gov. Ambode, to please look into these issues and take a swift step towards resolving them all,’’ he said.

Aja-Nwachukwu Ex-education minister dies

Reports have confirmed that former Minister of Education,Dr Igwe Aja-Nwachukwuhas passed on at the age of 63.
He died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Israel.
The former minister’s younger brother,Festus Aja-Nwachukwu, confirmed the death on Wednesday in Abuja. Dr. Igwe reportedly died on the 17th of November.
The late Aja-Nwachukwu, who served under the administration of President Umaru Yar’Adua was receiving treatment at the hospital about 4 weeks before he passed on.
Festus explained that he could not disclose the cause his brother's death until the death certificate was issued by the hospital. He also added that burial arrangement will be communicated in due course.
Aja-Nwachuku, a native of Okposi in Ebonyi, was born in 1952 and appointed minister of education in 2007. His father was Nigeria’s first minister of education.
He graduated from the University of Ibadan with a Bachelor’s Degree in statistics.
He also had an MBA in Finance, MSc in Statistics and Ph.D in Economics.

LASU Students Protest Increment in Acceptance Fees

Lagos State University, LASU students union protest increment in acceptance fees. Any attempt to sustain the increment may lead to a looming crisis from the students.
The Lagos State University (LASU) Union, has urged the school management to revert the increase in acceptance fee. The fee, which was formerly N10, 000 has now been increased to N20, 000.
Mr Adeyemi Onikoro‎, LASUSU Chairman, told the ‎News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the reduction should be with immediate effect.
Onikoro said that the increment was another strategy devised by ‎the authorities to exploit the students and a technical way of increasing the school fees.
“Such a policy was initiated sometime ago at the Obafemi Awolowo Universit‎y (OAU), Ile-ife, but it caused crisis which led to the closure of the university for six months.
“We do not want such to happen in LASU, so that the academic calendar will not be distorted; that is why we are calling on the new governing council and the acting Vice-chancellor‎ to do the needful.
“Any attempt to sustain the increment will be vehemently opposed by the students,” he said.

N5000 To Unemployed Youths To Begin In 2016

The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has started plans to pay the N5000 monthly allowance to the about 25 million unemployed youths in the country by 2016.
The All Progressives Congress had promised before the election that it would address the issue of unemployment by paying unemployed youths N5000 and also introduce a feeding programme to schools.
The Peoples Democratic Party had in a motion called on the president to immediately fulfil his campaign promise by implementing the N5000 payment to unemployed youths but the move was rejected by APC senators.
The Punch however reports that the federal government had started plan on Monday, November 16 to pay the unemployed youths and also implement the school feeding programme and this will be covered in the 2016 budget.
Some officials have also been saddled with the responsibility of finding out the accurate number of youths that will benefit from the scheme.
A top government official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the scheme had to be done well so that it would not be mismanaged and hijacked by politicians.
“You know that if the scheme is left open-ended, even Nigerians, who are employed and are by no means vulnerable, will still struggle to benefit from it.
“You also know that if not properly handled, politicians will hijack the scheme and it will become a means of settling their constituents, whether they qualify to benefit from it or not.
This is why the government will come up with data on the beneficiaries very soon.”
The official said the scheme might not take off in January or February of next year as it was important to ascertain the number of youths that deserve the payment and how much it would cost.
Mr. Laolu Akande who is the senior special adviser to the vice president on media and publicity confirmed that work was already on to identify the beneficiaries.
He said:“Work is ongoing on various aspects of the implementation of that social investment plan, including the identification of those that will benefit from it. Very soon, we shall be concluding work on that; that is a very important aspect of the programme.
“The plan of the government is to start as much as possible in the area of social investment, and conditional cash transfer is part of it.
“It is the plan of the government to explore how to start this with the 2016 budget.”
According to the Ministry of Finance and that of Budget and National Planning, the full implementation of the scheme would cost the federal government N125bn monthly and a total sum of N1.5tr annually
Another anonymous source said that apart from the N5000 unemployment payment and the school feeding programme, the government also planned to take care of Internally Displaced Persons.
He said: “We have started working on the budget since September this year at the Ministry of Budget and Planning.
“Since the ministry is the one coordinating the plans of government, what we did was to identify six priority programmes by pillars which have already been communicated to all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government.
“So while preparing the medium term plan, what we did was to look at the manifesto of the APC and prepare our plan based on what its campaign promises were to Nigerians before the elections.
“And since social development is a key aspect of its campaign, we identified social protection schemes such as the conditional cash transfer and the school feeding programme as key to the programmes for 2016.”
President Buhari canceled the SURE P Programme which was also aimed at helping Nigerian youths.Christopher Kolade who headed the programme before he resigned said it had been hijacked by politicians and the true beneficiaries did not benefit from it.
