Admission Requirements
M. A. History
The following shaft qualify for the Master of Arts (M.A) History Degree Programme:
Candidates must possess at least a Second Class lower Honours degree in History from -a recognized University.
Candidates with Second Class Lower Division Honours degree in History Education from a recognized University may be considered. Such Candidates, upon gaining admission, must offer same specified courses at the Undergraduate Programme in the Department of History.
M. Sc Physics
Applicants with the following qualifications from any recognized University will be considered for admission.
B.Sc (Hons Physics, with a Minimum of Second Class Lower Division.
Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
The following shall qualify for admission into Postgraduate Diploma Programmes:
To be considered for admission all prospective candidates must have a Minimum of Second Class Lower degree or HND Upper Credit in their teaching subject.
Candidates with Third Class degree with working experience of not less than three years may also be considered for admission.
General Requirements
In addition candidates must fulfill the entry requirement for the undergraduate programme of the University.

Adeleke University Offers Scholarship To 18-year-old Rape Victim

Authorities of Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, on Saturday asserted that the institution will give scholarship to the 18-year-old admission seeker allegedly raped by a part-time lecturer of the University of Lagos, Mr. Akin Baruwa.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Oluwole Amusan who promulgate this to liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine said that the management was moved by the plight of the girl, who was allegedly raped in the course of her quest for a university education. .

The VC said, “Giving out scholarships to indigent students is not new to us. Our founder had a foundation whose existence preceded the university, through which scholarships were given to students.
“Since the university was established four years ago, the tradition has continued.”
According to the VC, the scholarship would cover the four-year duration of Mass Communication, which the girl has chosen to study, a course which UNILAG has said she was not qualified for with her 211 score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

He said it has not been determined whether the scholarship would be full or partial since he had not yet interacted with the father of the victim.
With a student population of over 1,000, one fifth of Adeleke University undergraduates are on scholarship, it was learnt.
The father of the alleged rape victim, told our correspondent that he had been contacted by the institution to come to the university.

“I was so happy when I was contacted. May God bless you so much for seeing the case through. I am so happy. Such scholarship would be a big blessing to my daughter,” he said

How I Escaped Being Raped By UNILAG Lecturer, Says Another victim

A 28-year-old former student of the part-time lecturer of the University of lagos who was accused to have rape an 18-year-old admission seeker has come out with a revelation of how she barely escaped being raped by Baruwa.
The young woman, who spoke under the strict condition of anonymity, explained that the sexual assault of the 18-year-old girl provided a window of opportunity for her to expose what she went through in the hands of the philandering lecturer.

Agnes said, “I finished my project around December 2013. It was around that time my supervisor, who was a very pleasant woman, retired. I was reassigned to Mr. Akinfolarin Baruwa. I got his number and called him on the phone and he told me to come the following day.
“He fixed the appointment around 5pm the next day. I went to meet him in an office in the Faculty of Business Administration, which he shared with another lecturer. I noticed it was the other lecturer’s name that was on the door.

“When I got to his office, I noticed that there was a student that came to submit her project also. She was from the Lagos State University. So, I supposed he was also doing part-time work at LASU.
“While I was there, other students came to submit their projects also and he told me to wait outside. Later he started sending me on errands. He would tell me to go and make one photocopy or another or buy things for him. I was patient and did everything he asked.
“He did all these until around 8pm when he eventually looked at my project. As soon as he opened the pages, he flung it away. ‘What kind of rubbish is this?’ he said. He said I would have to start the project from the beginning.
“Mr. Baruwa told me that everything I did was rubbish. He said I did not cite a particular reference somewhere and said he would report me to our course adviser for plagiarism and I would be given an extra year. He just wanted to hold on to something just to rubbish my work.”
Agnes alleged that it was at this point that she started to beg Baruwa. She claimed that she was on her knees because she was writing exams and most of her colleagues had already finished their project.

“There was also a deadline I had to meet for the submission of the project. I explained all these to him and begged. Later, he said I should drop the project that he would see what he could do about it,” Agnes said.
According to Agnes, Baruwa does not have a doctoral degree. She said he was a part-time lecturer, who was assigned students for supervision and given invigilation roles during examinations.
It would be recalled that the management of UNILAG had on Monday, denied having Baruwa under the employ of the institution despite the fact that he supervised the final projects of many students in the Faculty of Business Administration.

Infact, Agnes, who is now married, showed our correspondent a copy of her undergraduate project, bearing Baruwa’s name and signature.
Agnes said after Baruwa softened on his threat that she would have an extra year, she went down on her knees to thank him but while she was mouthing her appreciation, the man allegedly moved around the office closing the blinds.
“He brought out some fruits from the fridge. I thought he was preparing to go home when he was doing that. He was clearing the books on the sofa. He said, ‘is that how to say thank you?’ I only knew something was amiss when he suddenly locked the door,” she said.
“Before I knew what was happening, he pulled me and put my hands on his manhood. He grabbed my breasts and I began to struggle with him. He started to forcibly remove my clothes. I was shocked beyond words. I felt really violated.
“He grew more aggressive as I fought him off. I screamed but I knew my screaming would do nothing because the office is opposite the UNILAG guesthouse by the seaside.

“I am asthmatic. As he was about to force himself on me, I realised that I was beginning to have breathing problem as if an attack was on its way. I decided to lay still and I started breathing excessively as if I was already having asthmatic attack. I started to beg him as I breathed heavily. I told him, ‘Please, I can’t breathe, I have asthma.’
“He then left me alone after that and apologised. He said he was not usually like that and that he was only aroused. He said I should just give him a ‘handjob’ (fondle his manhood with my hand) instead. I started to beg him again and pretended as if I wanted to faint. I told him to open the door in order for me to get fresh air.”
Agnes said as she rushed out of Baruwa’s office, she was in so much shock that she lost her bag with , out knowing. She said the shock was so much that she fell down and could not move.
According to her, her troubles did not stop there.
She claimed that the next time she went to Baruwa’s office for her project, she had to tell a friend to follow her.
She said, “He must have sighted me from afar because when I told him that I was around, he just dismissed me that he had no time. He gave me an appointment for early morning but I went there some minutes after 7am. He said, ‘You think you are smart eh? You are playing with your graduation.’

“After I eventually got the project back from him and went back to submit, there was a little activity in his office then. He told me to wait outside. As the office cleared and the lecturer he shared the office with left, he called me inside.
“He started to force himself on me again and I started begging that I had a fiancée. He said ‘So?’ In broad daylight, he was fondling me. But as I resisted him and dragged myself from his grip, my shirt tore. I was infuriated. I stormed out of his office and threatened that I was going straight to the vice chancellor’s office.
“He became aggressive at this point and shouted at me that I should get out of his office. He said I would never graduate. I was so angry that I was going straight towards the senate building.”
Agnes said she was later called back by someone who knew her. She claimed that some officials in the faculty intervened in the matter that day and that when Baruwa was approached on the issue, he feigned ignorance.

“He said, ‘Me? I was only telling her about the corrections she had to effect on her project and told her to come back when she started shouting.’ Later, the lecturers were behind closed door with him and I did not hear what they discussed. When they came out, they just told me to forget the issue,” she said.
liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine learnt that Agnes’ problem persisted when it was time for Baruwa to submit her score sheet to her course adviser.

According to her, every student was mandated to submit a score sheet to their respective project supervisor, who would in turn submit to the course adviser.
Agnes said, “Without it, you cannot submit the final copy of your project or defend the project. In short, you cannot graduate,” Agnes told our correspondent. “But Mr. Baruwa refused to submit my score sheet. I kept asking him about it and he kept referring me to the course adviser. He maintained he had submitted it. But the course adviser kept telling me she had not got my score sheet.

“He later said something that made me realise he was merely punishing me for not allowing him to have his way with me. While I was going through these problems, I heard of other ladies who had the same problem but could not speak out.
“When the frustration was too much, I had to write a letter of complaint telling the school authorities to look into my issue with Mr. Baruwa.

“He later submitted my score sheet after he put me through so much trouble. By the time I escaped him, I was already psychologically drained.

“When I heard about the case of this other girl, I just shook my head because there was no way the girl could have escaped him.”

Despite initial denials from the UNILAG management that it did not know who Baruwa was, it was learnt that he supervised the final projects of undergraduates.

Liveschoolnews.com.ng learnt that after Agnes’ report to the school authorities, Baruwa was stopped from supervising female students. But why he still retained his part-time duties in the faculty is not clear.

Our correspondent contacted the Public Affairs Officer of UNILAG, Mr. Olagoke Oke, following this fresh allegation.
He said every allegations against Baruwa would be discussed by a four-man panel set up by the institution to look into how the suspect got into the university system.
Asked if the school could now admit that he was indeed working in the institution and that he was even supervising undergraduate projects, he said, “That might have been possible in DLI (Distant Learning Institute). But the panel would look at all these and come out with the report of its investigation soon.”

Benue State University Lecturer Call Off Strike

The local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Benue State University (BSU) in Makurdi, on Monday, called off its strike and asked members to return to work.
The lecturers embarked on an indefinited strike four months ago because former Governor Gabriel Suswam did not pay their salaries.
The strike was called off after a peace meeting held by the ASUU leadership and representatives of the management and the state government. The parties, reached a “realistic” agreement after hours of meeting.
The ASUU Chairman, Dr David Ikoni, said lecturers were satisfied with the commitment of Governor Samuel Ortom to the agreement.
“We told our members that we agreed to the terms of the governor and suspended the strike on the governor’s appeal. He gave us his commitment and we felt that we should give him a benefit of the doubt,” Dr Ikoni said.
He said the lecturers would not hesitate to embark on strike again if the governor failed to keep his promise.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Charity Angya, said the governor would do his best to ensure the school is not shut down again. She said: “Gov. Ortom has entered an agreement that is realistic. He had a good discussion with ASUU members and he agreed to the demands of the lecturers.”
The development excited students, some of who expressed happiness. Mary Anyogo, a 300-Level Mass Communication student, said she could not afford to stay at home any longer. “I am so happy when I heard the news. I can’t wait to go back to school,” she said.
Nana Ugoor, a 300-Level Psychology student, said he was no prepared to return to school, because of his financial challenge. He said: “Calling off the strike is good news, because it is what has been expected by students. But, I am not ready financially. I sponsor myself and it is not easy, getting money to return. I will resume in due time.”
The management has advised both staff and students not to waste time in resuming back to work to make up for the lost time.

UNILAG Editing Of Courses Date For 2014/2015 Announced

UI Student Slumps, Dies After Waiting For Hours To Write Exam

There was wild uproar at the University of Ibadan over the death of a distance learning student of the institution who slumped and die at the Adebayo Akande e-Centre, Ikeja, Lagos, after waiting for hours to write the examination.
The 100 level student of political science, identified as Pelewura Bolaji, was said to have written the first paper for the day before the incident happened.

The victim, according to an identification card found on him, is a worker with Greengates Specialties Limited. Though the ID card expired in September 2014.
An official of the school, who identified himself as Mr. Olayinka Kehinde, said he was the only UI official at the centre to supervise the examination. He said the matter had been reported to the school authorities and he was awaiting further directive concerning the examination.
It was discovered that while the body of the student was lying down in a car within the premises, examination was still going on.

One of the examiners confirmed that there was an instruction that the examination should continue.

A student, who simply identified himself as Tony, said, “The management of the centre had earlier told us that the examination might not hold successfully in Lagos due to some challenges and that they subsequently notified the authorities.”

Some of the students alleged that they were made to pay medical fees, but expressed concern that the management failed to put in place necessary medical facilities in case of emergency.
The victim was later confirmed dead at the Lagoon Hospital, Ikeja.

Qualification for the Programmes
For Preliminary Studies – 1 (PS-1), a candidate should possess five (5) credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology.
For Preliminary Studies – 2 (PS-2), a candidate should possess five (5) credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Agricultural Science.
For Remedial Studies – 1 (RS-1) & 2 (RS-2), a candidate should possess at least three (3) credits in any of the six subjects; English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Agricultural Science.
Screening Exercise
All successful applicants would be required to partake in a screening test for which a date would be announced.
*The test is Computer-Based Testing.

Lagos council registers 400 for Nov/Dec WASSCE

The Ifelodun Local Council Development Authority has registered 400 persons for the forthcoming Nov/Dec 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
The council’s Executive Secretary, Adigun Adebayo, made this known while presenting the examination forms to the beneficiaries.
According to Adebayo, the gesture is to support the needy beneficiaries in the council to attain higher academic heights.
He stated this on Thursday in a statement signed by one of his aides, Taofik Olaoye.
Adebayo added the gesture would help to check the incidence of hooliganism and thuggery in the council.
Adebayo said, “We are distributing the forms to candidates who cannot afford to pay for the examination and to those that want to rewrite the exams. Their better future starts now and for them to be successful in life, they need to take education seriously.”
The council, he added, would offer a free summer lesson classes for the beneficiaries as well as other pupils.
The exercise, which had already commenced LA Primary School, Safejo, the council boss added would help to eradicate illiteracy in the council.
The council’s Supervisor for Education, Adeniji Hassan, urged the beneficiaries to work harder to enable them to excel in the examination.
Two of the beneficiaries, Olaoye Olawumi, and Rasheed Taye, who thanked the authorities of the council for the gesture, promised work hard for the examination.

Be change agents, Babcock VC urges teachers

The President/Vice-Chancellor of the Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Prof. Kayode Makinde, has urged teachers to be change agents by instilling moral values in their pupils.
He said this while addressing the 13th annual conference of the Adventist Educators Association of Nigeria at the Babcock University High School on Thursday.
According to Makinde teachers should always be mindful of what they teach their pupils.
He said, “Education is seed planting. It is sowing. As teachers, you must be mindful of what exactly that are sowing or planting into the brain of the pupils or students you are teaching.
“Definitely it is what you sow that you will reap. So, as Adventist teachers, you must instil Christ-like and moral values into those you are teaching. That is the only way they will become exemplary leaders in future.”
The VC, who implored them to be the ‘light’ in their different positions, stressed that the nation could not be greater than the quality of its teachers.
The wife of the Ogun State governor, Olufunso, who declared the seminar opened, appealed to the participants to do their job with passion.
According to her, if they teach with passion, their pupils will learn with excitement.
She said, “Anyone who invests in education is investing in the future. As educators, you must teach your pupils moral values that will make meaningful contributions to the development of the country.”
The association’s President, Mrs. Oluyemisi Aina, urged teachers to endeavour to engage in research in order to be up-to-date in new teaching methodology.
She also condemned parents who cared less about the moral upbringing of their children.
She said, “Charity begins at home, parents must take interest in the education of their children and the kind of friends they keep. But it is unfortunate that many parents are only pursuing material gains to their detriment of proper upbringing of their children.”

Adebule seeks youth involvement in governance

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule, has called for youth representation in government.
Adebule made the appeal during the United Nations International Youth Day 2015 in Lagos on Wednesday.
She spoke through the Director of Finance and Administration, Office of the Deputy-Governor, Mrs. Yetunde Odejayi.
The event, hosted by a youth development non-governmental organisation, the Strategy for Mentoring Initiative and Leadership Empowerment, focused on the theme- Youth Civic Engagement.
Adebule, who defined youths as a link between the present and the future, noted that there was the need to give them recognition in government.
She said, “Our youths are an important link between the present and the future. A conscious effort to engage them will prepare them for a successful transition into adulthood. We should allow them a voice in the activities of the government.
“We intend to create platforms where the government and citizens will focus on involving our youths in decision making processes.”
The Director of the UN International Centre, Lagos, Mr. Ronald Kayanja, urged the youth to join forces with the UN in order to make change.
He said, “The youth should join forces with the UN. Their engagement will help turn the world around into the world we deserve,” he said.
The President of SMILE, Mrs. Bimpe Bamgbose-Martins, said her organisation would launch a change agent tool-kit designed to provide practical guidance to young people, who aspire to make impact in the society through various initiatives.
The event featured notable career experts, professionals, international speakers, students, youths, NGOs and young Nigerians who are leading change in different facets of life.

Amosun ‘sacks’ top education officials over exam questions criticizing his government

Premium Times reports that an examiner, Adegbenro Joel, prepared the English language exam questions for the third term academic session of the State unified examination in public secondary schools.

The “offensive” summary passage read:
“There is no arguing about the fact that the government is merely paying lip service to the development of the education. It is true that a lot of money is being spent on education sector but, with little or no impact felt by the people, except where we want to deceive ourselves.

“Many schools run by the government which were formally known for academic excellence have suddenly lost their prestige and are living on past glory. No wonder many parents and guardians are threateningly left with only one option, to withdraw their wards from these schools to other ones that are better managed.”


Ibikunle Amosun, the governor of Ogun state, was reportedly infuriated when his attention was drawn to the passage, and he has reportedly ordered the sacking of the officials who were in charge of that examination.

According to government sources, those fired include Folashade Oresegun, an acting permanent secretary, three directors including Ganiyu Odunsi, and a deputy director of curriculum and evaluation, identified only as Mr. Majekodunmi.

The source revealed that the examiner, who is a teacher at Mayflower School, was also fired.

When contacted, Modupe Adekunle, the state head of service said: “I am aware that not all of them were dismissed, some were terminated, some compulsorily retired.

“When the issue came up, the state government put in the necessary process, a panel was set up to investigate and based on their recommendations, the civil service commission has to decide. It is a decision that has been related to the affected officers.

“The normal process was that a panel was set up, the report forwarded to the Civil Service Commission for the civil servants, the Teaching Service Commission, for the teachers.
“The decision was in line with the civil service rule, due process was followed to the letter.”

Meanwhile, ahead of the 2015 International Youth Day, Ahmed Adamu, the chairperson of the Commonwealth Youth Council, tasked youth leaders in Nigeria and around the world to make civic education a number one priority.

Ondo University staff protest over alleged plan to reserve status

Non-Teaching Staff of Adeyemi University of Education in Ondo West Local Government area of Ondo State, on Thursday staged a peaceful protest over alleged plan to reverse the status of the institution, back to College of Education.

Adeyemi University of Education was among five other Colleges approved by former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration for upgrade to Specialized University status.

The aggrieved workers, who include members of the Non-Academic Staff Union, (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) accused some people, whom they refused to mention their names as brains behind the development.
But, it was gathered that some lecturers from the institution and other newly upgraded Universities were those agitating for the return of the Universities to College.
Sources informed that those lecturers allegedly behind these, are those without PhD certificate and they were afraid that if activities fully commence in their institutions as Universities of Education, they may be laid off.
Earlier, before the protest, the workers called a congress where the unions formed a joint association called “Joint Non-Teaching Staff Action Committee” (JNTSAC) to fight their cause.
They later moved to the Ondo-Ore-Lagos express road opposite the gate of the University, carrying placards with different inscriptions such as “Mr. President take away corruption, not our University, “University Status, no going back”, “forward ever, backward never”.
Their action caused a gridlock for travellers and motorists plying the route for an hour.
Speaking with reporters, the Chairman JNTSAC, Mr. Femi Lademikan said the non-teaching staff of the institution were against any move to reverse the status of the University.
“We want our University to remain. We are appealing to the government through this peaceful demonstration that what we want is our university status.
“Our Governor, Olusegun Mimiko is doing very well and we appreciate him on this. We are using this medium to tell him that we want him to be more proactive on this issue.
“We are telling President Muhammadu Buhari that we have everything that is required to make this institution a University. We have manpower, we have the people, we have the resources and everything that it takes to maintain this school. The structure is there, we have an enabling environment, we are peaceful and cooperative. Mr. President must not listen to people who don’t love him, sycophant and those enemies of progress.
“They are so many publications on dailies that the institution should be returned to college but because of these forum, we won’t mention names but we know them and we are waiting for them and we, the non-teaching staff are saying no to reversal of our University status”.

University Of Port Harcourt Three students charged for armed robbery

TheRivers State Police Commandhas arrested and charged three students of theUniversity of Port Harcourt(UNIPORT) for alleged armed robbery.
The students were identified as,Nwachinemere Benjamin, 24;Osaki Bob, 22 andReginald Sekibo, 21.

They were arrested during an operation by the Anti-Robbery Squad of the Police in Port Harcourt during an operation.
All investigations have been completed and the suspects are awaiting trial

Federal College of Agriculture Students protest over colleague run over by car

Aminu Adekola, a 200L ofAgricultural Technologyin the school, was hit by a driver who veered off the road unto the path of the student who was walking towards the school gate.
According to eyewitness reports, the driver, who was a learner, was trying to avoid a head-on collision with a truck that strayed off its lane in an attempt to avoid a pothole, Punch reports.
Students of the institution accused officials of theOyo State Ministry of Worksof digging the hole in 2014 while repairing a rusty water pipe.
Our correspondent, who visited the scene around 7.15 am on Thursday, observed that the students had caused a gridlock on theIbadan-Abeokuta Roadafter blocking the road with tyres, planks and other objects.
The students also dug the road to stop free traffic flow in front of the school as all vehicles taking the route were forced to take an alternative road.
The road, which was blocked by the students, connects inner Ibadan with some communities, including Apata, Owode and Omi-Adio.
Our correspondent also observed that several policemen were stationed at the scene to forestall a further breakdown of law and order.
The team was led by the Divisional Police Officer, Apata, Mr. Hassan Khalil.
The students also protested against the deployment of an Armoured Personnel Carrier by the police.
A worker of the institution said the students locked and chased employees out of their offices.
The students later stormed the state secretariat but could not gain entrance into the premises.
One of the students, who identified himself as Sadiq, blamed the water corporation for the accident.
He said students from other tertiary institutions in the state had joined in the protest.
“From what we heard, our colleague was hit by a learner who was avoiding a truck. The truck was trying to avoid entering a pothole. The hole was dug last year by officials of the water corporation. They worked there for many days and after their work, they left the huge hole.
“There should be a fly-over in front of the school gate to protect the students from accidents or in the interim, speed breakers. This is an expressway and students cross the road at great risk all the time,” he added.

Modibbo Adama University, Yola Only 29 of 12,600 students get 1st class as MAUTECH holds triple convocation

Only 29 first class graduates will be given first class honors as theModibbo Adama University of Technology(MAUTECH), Yola convokes 12,600.
In a statement during the pre-convocation Press Conference, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, ProfessorKyari Mohammed, said out of the 12,600 graduating students, 8401 will get first degrees made up of 29 first class certificates, 1491 upper second class, 4251 lower second class, 2449 third class, and 181 students who finished with pass degrees.

This convocation is the 18th, 19th and 20th of the MAUTECH.
The Vice Chancellor revealed that the University is set to unveil a Student’s Support Scheme which will help indigent students complete their programmes.

In a related development, PresidentMuhammadu Buharicommissioned a newly constructed e-library at the university as part of the activities marking the convocation ceremonies.

NABTEB May/June 2015 Results Announced

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board Dr. Olatunde Aworanti has announced the results for the 2015 May/June National Business Certificate/National Technical Certificate examinations.
Speaking in Benin Edo State, the Registrar said that 19,000 candidates scored five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
A further break down reveals that 54,016 candidates, representing 70.25 per cent, had five credit and above, with or without English and Mathematics, noted that 15,848 sat for the Engineering Trade, 6,846 entered for Construction Trades; 1,710 for Miscellaneous Trades; and 16,818 for Business Trades.
He said that the board's effort at reducing the number of examination centres helped to curtail incidences of malpractice in this years examination.

[Must Read]: Pres. Buhari’s Speech To Young Nigerians To Mark International Youth Day

It is a great pleasure for me to address you this morning at this important occasion as we join other nations across the world to commemorate the 2015 International Youth Day. I am aware that it is in line with the United Nations Resolution 54/120 (19th Dec. 1999) to observe 12th August of every year as a day to celebrate and appreciate the contribution of the youth to their various communities. The appointment of an Envoy on Youth by the United Nations Secretary General is a clear indication of the attention youth issues are accorded around the world.

2.?The International Youth Day, therefore, constitutes part of the United Nation’s broader World Programme of Action for Youth. This is a laudable initiative targeted at promoting the general wellbeing and livelihood of young people with its priority focus on education, employment, poverty and hunger, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, inter-generational issues amongst others. This year’s theme tagged youth “Civic Engagement” is very apt. We strongly believe that the engagement and participation of young people is necessary in order to accelerate economic growth and sustainable development.

3.?As we commemorate this year’s International Youth Day, let me use this moment to once again pay tribute to all the young people who played significant roles in making the 2015 General Elections a model for democratic governance in Africa. The role you played, individually and collectively, in not only being peaceful members of the electorate but also galvanising the social media platform and mobilizing your peers to make the right choice. Your role contributed in no small measure to having a credible election in an atmosphere that was hitherto tense and volatile. The outcome is today being celebrated worldwide. Your role is greatly appreciated.

4.?I can assure you, my young compatriots, that you have written your names in history and you will be remembered as true heroes of our democracy and as architects of change.

5.?Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, you may wish to note that Africa is the most ‘youthful’ continent in the world. According to the figures I have been presented with, at least 20 percent of the continent’s population of 1.2 billion is between the age bracket of 15 – 24 years, with about 42% below 15 years of age. As the rest of the world gets older, Africa is getting younger. This is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. It all depends on what we make of it.
Therefore, one of the greatest challenges facing governments and policy makers in Africa today is how to provide opportunities and meet the needs of young people, the vast majority of whom need to be empowered to enable them to lead decent lives and contribute their quota to the socio economic and political development of their countries.

6.?Correctly harnessed, this tremendous labour force could propel us to take a quantum leap in developing our infrastructure so that Nigeria can join the 21st Century.

7.?Some of you may recall that African leaders, at the Malabo 2011Summit, committed themselves to providing employment, whether directly or indirectly, for at least 3% of its unemployed young people every year. For us, the meeting in Malabo 2011, marked another turning point in the continent’s quest for development. The summit adopted that all member States should advance the youth agenda and adopt policies and mechanisms towards the creation of safe, decent and competitive employment opportunities. This would be achieved by accelerating the implementation of the Youth Decade Plan of Action (2009 – 2018) and the Ouagadougou 2004 Plan of Action on Employment Promotion and Poverty Alleviation. African leaders have since stepped up efforts to give voice, visibility and platforms to the youth to advocate for more investments in their future.

8.?It is, however, an issue of serious concern that in Nigeria, so far, economic growth has not translated into commensurate and improved social outcomes, especially for our 60 million young people who made up the majority of the population. Consequently our youth migrate from rural to urban areas and from this country to other countries across borders, in search of greener pastures.

9.?Distinguished ladies and gentlemen and my beloved youth, I want to assure you that the new Administration will place high premium in tackling challenges facing the youth sector.

10.?According to the National Bureau of Statistics, unemployment remains a major concern in Nigeria, with rates rising from 6.4% in 2006 to 24.20% in the first quarter of 2015. The unemployment rate among youth is even more disturbing and considered to be over 50% due to the sheer number of unemployed graduates and a huge number of youth who have had no chance to go to school roaming about the streets.

11.?It is worth noting that although educational attainment by Nigerian young people has increased significantly in the last decade, the relevance of curricula, quality of education and the fit with skills required by the job market, still remains a challenge for us as a country.
Unsuitable qualifications limit our young peoples’ employment prospects and potential to contribute to national development. Our new Administration is poised to providing an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive so as to ensure greater opportunities for jobs to be created for our young people.

12.?This we believe will assist in reducing criminal activities and terrorism. We have resolved to provide adequate infrastructure and strengthen our job creation institutions in order to increase opportunities for our young people. For Nigeria to sustainably create jobs and ensure growth, we will pay special attention to the growth of our Small and Medium Scale Enterprises. This can be achieved through boosting the intervention funds as guaranteed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

13.?In order to ensure that young people are healthy, skilled and educationally empowered, we will strengthen our academic and vocational training institutions as well as significantly improve our healthcare delivery system.

14.?Young Nigerians, let me conclude by reiterating that we are very much committed to fulfilling all our campaign promises. We, therefore, seek your cooperation and patience in this regard. Be assured that “change” for us is not a mere political slogan but the beginning of a new era desired by the majority of Nigerians. The youth must therefore be vanguards of this change and at the same time be the change that they wish to see. To this end and knowing that sustainable development cannot take place in the absence of peace, we must all work together towards the actualization of sustainable peace and harmony to enable this administration to build an enduring legacy. It is on this note that I wish the Nigerian youth happy 2015 International Youth Day celebration.

Kogi State University Post UTME/DE Form is Out – 2015/16

Kogi State University, KSU post UTME and Direct Entry screening exercise application form for the 2015/2016 academic session is now out. Kogi State University post UTME minimum cut-off mark is 180. Candidates who made KSU their second choice need not to register. Ability to read and click or move the mouse on the computer are the only requirements for the test.
This is to inform all candidates who applied for admission into Kogi State University, Anyigba, for the 2015/2016 Academic Session and who made the institution their FIRST CHOICE (MOST PREFERRED INSTITUTION ONLY), that they would be screened through a Computer-Based Test (CBT), in their subject combinations similar to UTME, starting from Tuesday 1stand ending on Tuesday 8thSeptember, 2015 for UTME candidates only.

Arewa Students Voice ‘Educate poor, hopeless Northern youths and save the future’

A Northern students group, theArewa Students Voice, has called on governments, corporate organizations and individuals in the region to assist in educating indigent youths.
According to the group's secretary general,Ramadan Yusuf, who wrote an open letter on the issue, providing necessary support for youths without the means of funding their education is a way of safeguarding the future.
“We are appealing to government, corporate bodies and wealthy individuals to intervene and consider the lives of the hopeless children and youths within their immediate environments," Yusuf wrote.
“Allowing the destitute children to live a hopeless life leads to immoralities in our society and in return jeopardizes the lives of the future generations.
The group stated that the advantage of educating such youth will be enjoyed by the society at large.

“Our society can only be better when the younger ones are provided with quality education to become more productive and have a responsible means of living."
The Northern region has been widely said to be the most academically disadvantaged in Nigeria.
In July, the students group had raised alarm over increasing drug abuse among Northern students in tertiary institutions, calling for vocational training and awareness campaigns to help stem the trend.

National Universities Commission 11 private universities denied full operational license, granted 2-yr extension

Eleven private universities in Nigerian have lost their bids for full operational licenses due to their failure to meet requirements set by theNational Universities Commission(NUC).
According to the Executive Secretary of the Commission, ProfessorJulius Okojie, said the requirements covered staff, facilities and land amongst other things.
“Interim accreditation was given for 3 years, then we visited and inspected the university`s facilities, staff quality and distributions especially in parameter structure, we also check the governance structure and requirements and the hectares of their land if its 100 hectares,” Okojie said.
“Precisely accreditation is a monitoring process which enables the commission to keep academic programmes of a university in check and for necessary advice to be given if any challenge arise.”
He revealed that the universities have been given an extension of two years to reassess its staff strength to student ratio and its facilities in order to get full accreditation for all their programmes.
In a related development, the NUC boss presented full operational license to and nine private universities, including Caleb University, Veritas University, Afe Babalola University and Nigeria Turkish Nile University.

JAMB, Post UTME, CBT UNIJOS don says computer based test discriminate against rural students

Computer based tests discriminate against rural students who have had little experience with computers, saysUniversity of Jos(UNIJOS) don,James Bature.
Speaking with theNews Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Kaduna on Wednesday, Bature said theJoint Admission and Matriculation Board(JAMB) introduction of the computer-based test (CBT) mode in the admission process cheats out rural students.
He argued that most of the students from rural communities have no computer proficiency and are thus at a disadvantage through no fault of theirs.
"These students tried so hard to get the required number of credits for admission into tertiary institutions, and they are now compelled to write JAMB and post-UTME using computer," Bature said.
"Most of these children never saw a computer throughout their primary and secondary school education, but they are now subjected to compete with other children that use computers as toys.
"We are talking about building an egalitarian society, but structurally we are scheming the rural population out of the process."
The don noted that the admission process must be modified to take in the differences in computer proficiency.
"If we really meant to carry everybody along, then the government must incorporate local circumstances to admission process.
“Otherwise, some people will be completely excluded from the having access to tertiary education."
"Government must intervene in the admission process, by making it less expensive, less cumbersome and less sophisticated."
The 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is the first time that JAMB conducted its examination in the full CBT mode.

FUTA Post UTME No admission for 5,698 students who failed our exam— Deputy VC

More than half of those who sat for thePost Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination(UTME) of theFederal University of Technology, Akure(FUTA), Ondo State, failed to score enough points to be considered for admission.

According to the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the institution,Tunde Arayela, only 4,298 of 9,996 candidates scored 50 per cent and above.
The official said the remaining 5,698 who scored less than 50 per cent will not be considered for admission.

Arayela, who chairs the University Admissions Committee said the institution will still have to select from the successful students because it can only admit 2,834 candidates.
This means that nearly 3000 of those who passed will join those who failed the Post UTME test.

Post-UTME Registration Procedure
STEP 1:At the homepage of the Bayero University website, www.buk.edu.ng, click POST-UTME Application Portal
STEP 2:Login using your UTME Number and UTME Aggregate (total score), then upload your passport-sized photograph. Note that the photograph uploaded will be the only valid ID for all admitted candidates throughout their stay in Bayero University, Kano
STEP 3:Fill-in the Applicant’s Particulars Form.
STEP 4:Print your personalized Payment Invoice and use the invoice to make the payment of N2,500 (Two Thousand Five Hundred Naira Only) at any branch of Banks Listed on your Invoice nationwide.
STEP 5:After making the payment, return to the website, www.buk.edu.ng, login again. Your payment will be validated after which you can print your personalized Examination Card.
NOTE:No Applicant will be allowed to sit for the Post-UTME test without a valid Examination Card.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Prospective candidates must have sat for the 2015 UTME Examinations, chose BUK as her/his first choice, and must have scored an aggregate of 180 or higher in the relevant subjects as advertised in the UME Brochure.

UNIZIK 2015/2016 Post-UTME Screening Date, Procedure Announced. Nnamdi Azikiwe University has scheduled its 2015/2016 Post UTME Screening / Quality Assurance Exercise for candidates who chose the University as first choice.
Candidates who made the affiliate institutions of the University such as Enugu State College of Education (Technical); Federal College of Education, Umunze; Auchi Polytechnic and Pope John Paul II Major Seminary Okpuno (For Philosophy) as their first choice are required to apply and participate in the screening exercise.
The dates are as outlined below:

3. REGISTRATION PROCEDURE
a. Registration shall start on Wednesday, 12th August 2015 and end on Wednesday, 2nd September 2015. Ensure that you beat the dateline.
b. Candidates are to register online at the University’s portal my.unizik.edu.ngor go to www.unizik.edu.ng for the link to the above portal.
c. Candidates are to scan and upload to the portal their recent digital passport-size photographs measuring not more than 200 x 150 mm showing both ears and no cap or eye glasses.
*Blurred photographs shall disqualify the applicant.
*Candidates are to print the completed online form for presentation on
the day of the examination.
d. The pin codes for registration can be obtained from branches of any of the following banks, on the payment of the sum of N2,000.00 (Two Thousand Naira) only:

e. The candidates should thereafter proceed to any cybercafé of their choice for the online registration.
4. TIME AND REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SCREENING EXERCISE
Accreditation of candidates commences at 8.00 a.m. each day.
Candidates are to report with:
a. Two (2) copies of their online registration forms showing
their photographs.
b. Baptismal Card or Certificate of Birth Registration
c. Photocopies of JAMB Slip showing their photographs and JAMB online Result. (a copy each)
d. Local Government Identification Certificate
5. RESTRICTIONS
a. Only bona fide candidates shall be allowed into the University.
b. Parents and guardians are, therefore, strongly advised against attempting to enter the University Campus. Security shall be tight.
c. Candidates who do not register online shall not be received for the screening exercise.
d. The University will not be liable for any payment made with wrong JAMB registration number at the Bank;
f. The University shall also not be liable to any fraudulent payments made anywhere that are not in line with the directives of the University.

Omotola Wants Buhari to Scrap NYSC. See Her Reasons

In an interview with NewTelegraph,Omotola Jalade Ekehinde made known her wish to have Buhari scrap NYSC.

What advice do you have for President Muhammadu Buhari?
He should scrap NYSC. It’s not useful, he should please do that for Nigerians. Our children don’t need it anymore.

Why do you want NYSC scrapped, knowing fully well it’s a national orientation programme?

I have looked at the programme thoroughly and exactly what it’s supposed to have achieved over the years. Believe me, there is no credible or tangible result. It’s a total waste of time and resources and I think all the time and resources should be channelled into something more resourceful.

For instance, I have had situations where some members of my staff, in the name of NYSC, left for a year only to come back and their spaces had been taken by another. You can imagine.

NYSC is not just adding any value to our society or even to the lives of our children.

I am of the opinion that it should be scrapped.
