Adebule seeks youth involvement in governance

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule, has called for youth representation in government.
Adebule made the appeal during the United Nations International Youth Day 2015 in Lagos on Wednesday.
She spoke through the Director of Finance and Administration, Office of the Deputy-Governor, Mrs. Yetunde Odejayi.
The event, hosted by a youth development non-governmental organisation, the Strategy for Mentoring Initiative and Leadership Empowerment, focused on the theme- Youth Civic Engagement.
Adebule, who defined youths as a link between the present and the future, noted that there was the need to give them recognition in government.
She said, “Our youths are an important link between the present and the future. A conscious effort to engage them will prepare them for a successful transition into adulthood. We should allow them a voice in the activities of the government.
“We intend to create platforms where the government and citizens will focus on involving our youths in decision making processes.”
The Director of the UN International Centre, Lagos, Mr. Ronald Kayanja, urged the youth to join forces with the UN in order to make change.
He said, “The youth should join forces with the UN. Their engagement will help turn the world around into the world we deserve,” he said.
The President of SMILE, Mrs. Bimpe Bamgbose-Martins, said her organisation would launch a change agent tool-kit designed to provide practical guidance to young people, who aspire to make impact in the society through various initiatives.
The event featured notable career experts, professionals, international speakers, students, youths, NGOs and young Nigerians who are leading change in different facets of life.

Amosun ‘sacks’ top education officials over exam questions criticizing his government

Premium Times reports that an examiner, Adegbenro Joel, prepared the English language exam questions for the third term academic session of the State unified examination in public secondary schools.

The “offensive” summary passage read:
“There is no arguing about the fact that the government is merely paying lip service to the development of the education. It is true that a lot of money is being spent on education sector but, with little or no impact felt by the people, except where we want to deceive ourselves.

“Many schools run by the government which were formally known for academic excellence have suddenly lost their prestige and are living on past glory. No wonder many parents and guardians are threateningly left with only one option, to withdraw their wards from these schools to other ones that are better managed.”


Ibikunle Amosun, the governor of Ogun state, was reportedly infuriated when his attention was drawn to the passage, and he has reportedly ordered the sacking of the officials who were in charge of that examination.

According to government sources, those fired include Folashade Oresegun, an acting permanent secretary, three directors including Ganiyu Odunsi, and a deputy director of curriculum and evaluation, identified only as Mr. Majekodunmi.

The source revealed that the examiner, who is a teacher at Mayflower School, was also fired.

When contacted, Modupe Adekunle, the state head of service said: “I am aware that not all of them were dismissed, some were terminated, some compulsorily retired.

“When the issue came up, the state government put in the necessary process, a panel was set up to investigate and based on their recommendations, the civil service commission has to decide. It is a decision that has been related to the affected officers.

“The normal process was that a panel was set up, the report forwarded to the Civil Service Commission for the civil servants, the Teaching Service Commission, for the teachers.
“The decision was in line with the civil service rule, due process was followed to the letter.”

Meanwhile, ahead of the 2015 International Youth Day, Ahmed Adamu, the chairperson of the Commonwealth Youth Council, tasked youth leaders in Nigeria and around the world to make civic education a number one priority.

Ondo University staff protest over alleged plan to reserve status

Non-Teaching Staff of Adeyemi University of Education in Ondo West Local Government area of Ondo State, on Thursday staged a peaceful protest over alleged plan to reverse the status of the institution, back to College of Education.

Adeyemi University of Education was among five other Colleges approved by former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration for upgrade to Specialized University status.

The aggrieved workers, who include members of the Non-Academic Staff Union, (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) accused some people, whom they refused to mention their names as brains behind the development.
But, it was gathered that some lecturers from the institution and other newly upgraded Universities were those agitating for the return of the Universities to College.
Sources informed that those lecturers allegedly behind these, are those without PhD certificate and they were afraid that if activities fully commence in their institutions as Universities of Education, they may be laid off.
Earlier, before the protest, the workers called a congress where the unions formed a joint association called “Joint Non-Teaching Staff Action Committee” (JNTSAC) to fight their cause.
They later moved to the Ondo-Ore-Lagos express road opposite the gate of the University, carrying placards with different inscriptions such as “Mr. President take away corruption, not our University, “University Status, no going back”, “forward ever, backward never”.
Their action caused a gridlock for travellers and motorists plying the route for an hour.
Speaking with reporters, the Chairman JNTSAC, Mr. Femi Lademikan said the non-teaching staff of the institution were against any move to reverse the status of the University.
“We want our University to remain. We are appealing to the government through this peaceful demonstration that what we want is our university status.
“Our Governor, Olusegun Mimiko is doing very well and we appreciate him on this. We are using this medium to tell him that we want him to be more proactive on this issue.
“We are telling President Muhammadu Buhari that we have everything that is required to make this institution a University. We have manpower, we have the people, we have the resources and everything that it takes to maintain this school. The structure is there, we have an enabling environment, we are peaceful and cooperative. Mr. President must not listen to people who don’t love him, sycophant and those enemies of progress.
“They are so many publications on dailies that the institution should be returned to college but because of these forum, we won’t mention names but we know them and we are waiting for them and we, the non-teaching staff are saying no to reversal of our University status”.

University Of Port Harcourt Three students charged for armed robbery

TheRivers State Police Commandhas arrested and charged three students of theUniversity of Port Harcourt(UNIPORT) for alleged armed robbery.
The students were identified as,Nwachinemere Benjamin, 24;Osaki Bob, 22 andReginald Sekibo, 21.

They were arrested during an operation by the Anti-Robbery Squad of the Police in Port Harcourt during an operation.
All investigations have been completed and the suspects are awaiting trial

Federal College of Agriculture Students protest over colleague run over by car

Aminu Adekola, a 200L ofAgricultural Technologyin the school, was hit by a driver who veered off the road unto the path of the student who was walking towards the school gate.
According to eyewitness reports, the driver, who was a learner, was trying to avoid a head-on collision with a truck that strayed off its lane in an attempt to avoid a pothole, Punch reports.
Students of the institution accused officials of theOyo State Ministry of Worksof digging the hole in 2014 while repairing a rusty water pipe.
Our correspondent, who visited the scene around 7.15 am on Thursday, observed that the students had caused a gridlock on theIbadan-Abeokuta Roadafter blocking the road with tyres, planks and other objects.
The students also dug the road to stop free traffic flow in front of the school as all vehicles taking the route were forced to take an alternative road.
The road, which was blocked by the students, connects inner Ibadan with some communities, including Apata, Owode and Omi-Adio.
Our correspondent also observed that several policemen were stationed at the scene to forestall a further breakdown of law and order.
The team was led by the Divisional Police Officer, Apata, Mr. Hassan Khalil.
The students also protested against the deployment of an Armoured Personnel Carrier by the police.
A worker of the institution said the students locked and chased employees out of their offices.
The students later stormed the state secretariat but could not gain entrance into the premises.
One of the students, who identified himself as Sadiq, blamed the water corporation for the accident.
He said students from other tertiary institutions in the state had joined in the protest.
“From what we heard, our colleague was hit by a learner who was avoiding a truck. The truck was trying to avoid entering a pothole. The hole was dug last year by officials of the water corporation. They worked there for many days and after their work, they left the huge hole.
“There should be a fly-over in front of the school gate to protect the students from accidents or in the interim, speed breakers. This is an expressway and students cross the road at great risk all the time,” he added.

Modibbo Adama University, Yola Only 29 of 12,600 students get 1st class as MAUTECH holds triple convocation

Only 29 first class graduates will be given first class honors as theModibbo Adama University of Technology(MAUTECH), Yola convokes 12,600.
In a statement during the pre-convocation Press Conference, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, ProfessorKyari Mohammed, said out of the 12,600 graduating students, 8401 will get first degrees made up of 29 first class certificates, 1491 upper second class, 4251 lower second class, 2449 third class, and 181 students who finished with pass degrees.

This convocation is the 18th, 19th and 20th of the MAUTECH.
The Vice Chancellor revealed that the University is set to unveil a Student’s Support Scheme which will help indigent students complete their programmes.

In a related development, PresidentMuhammadu Buharicommissioned a newly constructed e-library at the university as part of the activities marking the convocation ceremonies.

NABTEB May/June 2015 Results Announced

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board Dr. Olatunde Aworanti has announced the results for the 2015 May/June National Business Certificate/National Technical Certificate examinations.
Speaking in Benin Edo State, the Registrar said that 19,000 candidates scored five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
A further break down reveals that 54,016 candidates, representing 70.25 per cent, had five credit and above, with or without English and Mathematics, noted that 15,848 sat for the Engineering Trade, 6,846 entered for Construction Trades; 1,710 for Miscellaneous Trades; and 16,818 for Business Trades.
He said that the board's effort at reducing the number of examination centres helped to curtail incidences of malpractice in this years examination.

i. Applicants may also pay through any of the following banks: Skye Bank Plc, First Bank Plc, Sterling Bank Plc and Guaranty Trust Plc if unable to access an ATM terminal to generate an electronic transaction.

[Must Read]: Pres. Buhari’s Speech To Young Nigerians To Mark International Youth Day

It is a great pleasure for me to address you this morning at this important occasion as we join other nations across the world to commemorate the 2015 International Youth Day. I am aware that it is in line with the United Nations Resolution 54/120 (19th Dec. 1999) to observe 12th August of every year as a day to celebrate and appreciate the contribution of the youth to their various communities. The appointment of an Envoy on Youth by the United Nations Secretary General is a clear indication of the attention youth issues are accorded around the world.

2.?The International Youth Day, therefore, constitutes part of the United Nation’s broader World Programme of Action for Youth. This is a laudable initiative targeted at promoting the general wellbeing and livelihood of young people with its priority focus on education, employment, poverty and hunger, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, inter-generational issues amongst others. This year’s theme tagged youth “Civic Engagement” is very apt. We strongly believe that the engagement and participation of young people is necessary in order to accelerate economic growth and sustainable development.

3.?As we commemorate this year’s International Youth Day, let me use this moment to once again pay tribute to all the young people who played significant roles in making the 2015 General Elections a model for democratic governance in Africa. The role you played, individually and collectively, in not only being peaceful members of the electorate but also galvanising the social media platform and mobilizing your peers to make the right choice. Your role contributed in no small measure to having a credible election in an atmosphere that was hitherto tense and volatile. The outcome is today being celebrated worldwide. Your role is greatly appreciated.

4.?I can assure you, my young compatriots, that you have written your names in history and you will be remembered as true heroes of our democracy and as architects of change.

5.?Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, you may wish to note that Africa is the most ‘youthful’ continent in the world. According to the figures I have been presented with, at least 20 percent of the continent’s population of 1.2 billion is between the age bracket of 15 – 24 years, with about 42% below 15 years of age. As the rest of the world gets older, Africa is getting younger. This is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. It all depends on what we make of it.
Therefore, one of the greatest challenges facing governments and policy makers in Africa today is how to provide opportunities and meet the needs of young people, the vast majority of whom need to be empowered to enable them to lead decent lives and contribute their quota to the socio economic and political development of their countries.

6.?Correctly harnessed, this tremendous labour force could propel us to take a quantum leap in developing our infrastructure so that Nigeria can join the 21st Century.

7.?Some of you may recall that African leaders, at the Malabo 2011Summit, committed themselves to providing employment, whether directly or indirectly, for at least 3% of its unemployed young people every year. For us, the meeting in Malabo 2011, marked another turning point in the continent’s quest for development. The summit adopted that all member States should advance the youth agenda and adopt policies and mechanisms towards the creation of safe, decent and competitive employment opportunities. This would be achieved by accelerating the implementation of the Youth Decade Plan of Action (2009 – 2018) and the Ouagadougou 2004 Plan of Action on Employment Promotion and Poverty Alleviation. African leaders have since stepped up efforts to give voice, visibility and platforms to the youth to advocate for more investments in their future.

8.?It is, however, an issue of serious concern that in Nigeria, so far, economic growth has not translated into commensurate and improved social outcomes, especially for our 60 million young people who made up the majority of the population. Consequently our youth migrate from rural to urban areas and from this country to other countries across borders, in search of greener pastures.

9.?Distinguished ladies and gentlemen and my beloved youth, I want to assure you that the new Administration will place high premium in tackling challenges facing the youth sector.

10.?According to the National Bureau of Statistics, unemployment remains a major concern in Nigeria, with rates rising from 6.4% in 2006 to 24.20% in the first quarter of 2015. The unemployment rate among youth is even more disturbing and considered to be over 50% due to the sheer number of unemployed graduates and a huge number of youth who have had no chance to go to school roaming about the streets.

11.?It is worth noting that although educational attainment by Nigerian young people has increased significantly in the last decade, the relevance of curricula, quality of education and the fit with skills required by the job market, still remains a challenge for us as a country.
Unsuitable qualifications limit our young peoples’ employment prospects and potential to contribute to national development. Our new Administration is poised to providing an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive so as to ensure greater opportunities for jobs to be created for our young people.

12.?This we believe will assist in reducing criminal activities and terrorism. We have resolved to provide adequate infrastructure and strengthen our job creation institutions in order to increase opportunities for our young people. For Nigeria to sustainably create jobs and ensure growth, we will pay special attention to the growth of our Small and Medium Scale Enterprises. This can be achieved through boosting the intervention funds as guaranteed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

13.?In order to ensure that young people are healthy, skilled and educationally empowered, we will strengthen our academic and vocational training institutions as well as significantly improve our healthcare delivery system.

14.?Young Nigerians, let me conclude by reiterating that we are very much committed to fulfilling all our campaign promises. We, therefore, seek your cooperation and patience in this regard. Be assured that “change” for us is not a mere political slogan but the beginning of a new era desired by the majority of Nigerians. The youth must therefore be vanguards of this change and at the same time be the change that they wish to see. To this end and knowing that sustainable development cannot take place in the absence of peace, we must all work together towards the actualization of sustainable peace and harmony to enable this administration to build an enduring legacy. It is on this note that I wish the Nigerian youth happy 2015 International Youth Day celebration.

Kogi State University Post UTME/DE Form is Out – 2015/16

Kogi State University, KSU post UTME and Direct Entry screening exercise application form for the 2015/2016 academic session is now out. Kogi State University post UTME minimum cut-off mark is 180. Candidates who made KSU their second choice need not to register. Ability to read and click or move the mouse on the computer are the only requirements for the test.

Arewa Students Voice ‘Educate poor, hopeless Northern youths and save the future’

A Northern students group, theArewa Students Voice, has called on governments, corporate organizations and individuals in the region to assist in educating indigent youths.
According to the group's secretary general,Ramadan Yusuf, who wrote an open letter on the issue, providing necessary support for youths without the means of funding their education is a way of safeguarding the future.
“We are appealing to government, corporate bodies and wealthy individuals to intervene and consider the lives of the hopeless children and youths within their immediate environments," Yusuf wrote.
“Allowing the destitute children to live a hopeless life leads to immoralities in our society and in return jeopardizes the lives of the future generations.
The group stated that the advantage of educating such youth will be enjoyed by the society at large.

“Our society can only be better when the younger ones are provided with quality education to become more productive and have a responsible means of living."
The Northern region has been widely said to be the most academically disadvantaged in Nigeria.
In July, the students group had raised alarm over increasing drug abuse among Northern students in tertiary institutions, calling for vocational training and awareness campaigns to help stem the trend.

National Universities Commission 11 private universities denied full operational license, granted 2-yr extension

Eleven private universities in Nigerian have lost their bids for full operational licenses due to their failure to meet requirements set by theNational Universities Commission(NUC).
According to the Executive Secretary of the Commission, ProfessorJulius Okojie, said the requirements covered staff, facilities and land amongst other things.
“Interim accreditation was given for 3 years, then we visited and inspected the university`s facilities, staff quality and distributions especially in parameter structure, we also check the governance structure and requirements and the hectares of their land if its 100 hectares,” Okojie said.
“Precisely accreditation is a monitoring process which enables the commission to keep academic programmes of a university in check and for necessary advice to be given if any challenge arise.”
He revealed that the universities have been given an extension of two years to reassess its staff strength to student ratio and its facilities in order to get full accreditation for all their programmes.
In a related development, the NUC boss presented full operational license to and nine private universities, including Caleb University, Veritas University, Afe Babalola University and Nigeria Turkish Nile University.

JAMB, Post UTME, CBT UNIJOS don says computer based test discriminate against rural students

Computer based tests discriminate against rural students who have had little experience with computers, saysUniversity of Jos(UNIJOS) don,James Bature.
Speaking with theNews Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Kaduna on Wednesday, Bature said theJoint Admission and Matriculation Board(JAMB) introduction of the computer-based test (CBT) mode in the admission process cheats out rural students.
He argued that most of the students from rural communities have no computer proficiency and are thus at a disadvantage through no fault of theirs.
"These students tried so hard to get the required number of credits for admission into tertiary institutions, and they are now compelled to write JAMB and post-UTME using computer," Bature said.
"Most of these children never saw a computer throughout their primary and secondary school education, but they are now subjected to compete with other children that use computers as toys.
"We are talking about building an egalitarian society, but structurally we are scheming the rural population out of the process."
The don noted that the admission process must be modified to take in the differences in computer proficiency.
"If we really meant to carry everybody along, then the government must incorporate local circumstances to admission process.
“Otherwise, some people will be completely excluded from the having access to tertiary education."
"Government must intervene in the admission process, by making it less expensive, less cumbersome and less sophisticated."
The 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is the first time that JAMB conducted its examination in the full CBT mode.

FUTA Post UTME No admission for 5,698 students who failed our exam— Deputy VC

More than half of those who sat for thePost Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination(UTME) of theFederal University of Technology, Akure(FUTA), Ondo State, failed to score enough points to be considered for admission.

According to the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the institution,Tunde Arayela, only 4,298 of 9,996 candidates scored 50 per cent and above.
The official said the remaining 5,698 who scored less than 50 per cent will not be considered for admission.

Arayela, who chairs the University Admissions Committee said the institution will still have to select from the successful students because it can only admit 2,834 candidates.
This means that nearly 3000 of those who passed will join those who failed the Post UTME test.

He should scrap NYSC. It’s not useful, he should please do that for Nigerians. Our children don’t need it anymore.

Why do you want NYSC scrapped, knowing fully well it’s a national orientation programme?

I have looked at the programme thoroughly and exactly what it’s supposed to have achieved over the years. Believe me, there is no credible or tangible result. It’s a total waste of time and resources and I think all the time and resources should be channelled into something more resourceful.

For instance, I have had situations where some members of my staff, in the name of NYSC, left for a year only to come back and their spaces had been taken by another. You can imagine.

NYSC is not just adding any value to our society or even to the lives of our children.

I am of the opinion that it should be scrapped.

MAUTECH 2015/2016 Post-UTME Screening Date, Procedure Announced

This is to inform all candidates who choose the Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH), Yola that the registration for the 2015/2016 Post-UTME Screening Exercise has commence .

Use your phone number (The one you entered earlier) as your Username as well as password. Confirm your information on the page and proceed to the payment page.
Put your ATM card number, the 3 digits behind the card and your ATM pin number and proceed to pay the total sum of N2,300 only. After a successful payment, you would proceed to fill your application form.
You are required to enter your personal information including your names and other relevant information. Upload your recent passport photograph with a plain background (JPEG format and not more than 50kb in size) and click on the ‘Submit application’ button.
Note that before final submission of the application, you are to cross-check and ensure all the information are correct, because after the submission you cannot edit any of the information.
Print the Application Slip with the Serial Number on your slip now your Application ID as well as your login username.
Screening Date & Details:

Polytechnic Students, Staff Plead With Buhari To End HND, B.Sc Disparity

Polytechnic Students, Staff Beg Buhari To End HND, B.Sc Disparity. Relief came to students in polytechnic on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, when the Registrar of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, said President Muhammadu Buhari, was willing to implement the waiver that would end the B.Sc and HND dichotomy. According to the JAMB boss, President Buhari while receiving the updated report on the B.Sc and HND saga which was presented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, MacJohn Nwaobiala in which he (Ojerinde) was part of the delegation, showed that the president demonstrated willingness to end the imbroglio.

Academic staffs, students and graduates of polytechnics welcomed the news with joy. But beneath the façade of their celebration lay the nagging fear whether the present government would be bold enough to address this prolonged issue? Will it not be another political promise as usual?

Their fears were hinged on the fact that in 2005, the former president, Olusegun Obasanjo announced a new policy to end the dichotomy that has pitched HND graduates against their more favoured graduates from the universities and made the HND certificate holders victims of discrimination in promotion and job prospects. But 10 years after, nothing has been done. HND holders are still being discriminated against in the labour market.

Few years ago, the Academic Staff of Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) embarked on an industrial action that lasted for 11 months. The union among other things demanded an end to the disparity between HND and B.Sc certificates in the country. The federal government on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 inaugurated a 12-man technical committee to review the issue, which has hindered career progression of HND holders in the core civil service system.

Speaking during the inauguration, the former Supervising Minister of Education now River State Governor, Nyesom Wike, stated that part of the committee’s terms of reference would be to review the curriculum of the HND programme, to establish a course that would pave the way for recognition of HND to reach the highest-grade level in public service and to design a programme to enable polytechnics award B-Tech degree, which is equivalent to that of universities.

A Bill for an Act to Abolish and Prohibit Dichotomy and Discrimination Between First Degrees and the Higher National Diploma in the Same Profession/Field and Related Matters,” on 22nd, October 2014 passed the second reading. The bill, which was sponsored by the former Senator representing Ondo Central, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, is still waiting in the chambers.

Speaking to Campus Sun on the need for the Buhari-led administration to address this prolonged controversy, the National Internal Auditor of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Mr Joel Fagbohun, said the union had severally criticized the idea of setting different cut-off marks for the two sectors by JAMB. He said: “The JAMB cut-off mark for admission into universities is still 180 while that of polytechnics is 150. Does that really demonstrate the willingness of the Federal Government and JAMB to end the dichotomy?”

Speaking further, Fagbohun said there is still a long way to go in ending the disparity, noting that people’s mindset in seeing university degree as superior to HND remained unchanged.

Also, Mr Tunji Owoeye, the ASUP Chairman, Federal Polytechnic, Ado- Ekiti, urged the present administration to match its words with action and end the discrepancy between HND and B.Sc certificates.

He said: “It is unfortunate that past administrations lack the political will to implement various committee reports on this. Students are disillusioned even before they get into the polytechnics, hence the few number of students that desire it as first choice. Nigeria’s technological growth depends on the level of investment in the polytechnic sector.”

Owoeye appealled to President Muhammed Buhari to allow the polytechnic system to develop along its policies. He also urged the Federal Government to allow polytechnics award higher degrees up to PhD level in their fields to check the brain-drain of academic staff to the varsities.

Aminat Adesanya, a Computer Science student, Yaba College of Technology, said ending the disparity between the two certificates would be a great achievement by the present leadership.

“In YABATECH, we have a lot of facilities and well-equipped laboratories which most universities in the country don’t have. Also, in terms of practical, polytechnic students are the best. So, Buhari should kindly stop this discrimination”, she said.

For Adetoun Ajagunna, an ND 1 Mass Communication student, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, graduates from polytechnics are better skilled than those from universities.

“We gain both the theoretical aspects and practical experience. What a 300 level student of Mass Communication in a university does is what our ND 2 students are doing here. So, segregating us in the labour market is very bad,” he said.

Adetoun appealed to the President to stop the disparity, and not push it to the sideline as was done by previous administrations.

For Olayemi Gbolagade, ND 2 Quantity Surveying student, Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, effecting the change would reduce the pressure on universities by admission seekers. According to him, applicants would choose polytechnics as their first choice, instead of running to the universities with limited carrying capacity.

Oluwatobi Nurudeen Ogunnusi, a graduate of Statistics from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro said ending the disparity would also enhance technological growth in Nigeria, as more students would go for skill-oriented courses offered in polytechnics.

“Rating of HND degree as third class must stop. Moreover, the federal government should review the Polytechnic Act and build another institution for middle level manpower,” he said.

Also speaking, Abidemi Rasaq from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, said ending the disparity would raise the esteem of polytechnic education in the country. He urged Buhari to implement his change mantra in the polytechnic sector.

“If B.Tech is awarded to polytechnic graduates, what happens to institution like FUTA, FUTO who are already issuing same? Will there be a change of name? To me, the problem is not about the federal government bridging the gap but the problem lies on the employer of labour, who will still look at the name of institution that doled out the certificate. That attitude will make the discrimination to continue”, he continued.

In his reaction, the Senate President, National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) and a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Salahudeen Lukman, urged the federal government to stop the disparity without further delay.

He said: “When some companies advertise vacancies with the condition of Bsc/BTECH only, are they trying to tell us, polytechnic students that graduate from universities are better. They make polytechnic graduates spend more years in postgraduate programme, insisting on PGD before one can do his Masters. Personally, I will be glad if HND can be converted to B.TECH. We have had enough of this discrimination”.

UNIUYO Post-UTME 2015: Date, Cut-off Mark, Eligibility And Registration Details

The University of Uyo has reverted her 2015/2016 Post-UTME cut-off mark to 180. This means that the JAMB posting/redistribution/eligibility check will not be used anymore.
The University has extended invitation to all candidates who made the University their 1st choice in the 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and had a Minimum Score of 180 and above to a Screening Exercise, for provisional admission consideration.

Exam Malpractice 118,101 WAEC candidates under investigation, results seized — Erigundu

Over a hundred thousand candidates who sat for the May/June 2015West African Senior School Certificate Examination(WASSCE) are being investigated for participating in examination malpractices.
The Head of the National Office of theWest African Examinations Council(WAEC),Charles Eguridusaid this on Monday while announcing results.
Erigundu revealed that a total of 118,101 candidates fall in this category.
"The results of 118,101 candidates, representing 7.41 per cent, are being withheld in connection with various cases of examination malpractice as the cases are being investigated and the reports of the investigations will be presented to the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC),” Erigundu said.

He noted that a further 95,373 candidates have been partially withheld for reasons unrelated to examination malpractices.

May/June WAEC 977,072 candidates fail Maths/English, may not get admission

About 1 million candidates who sat for the May/June 2015West African Senior School Certificate Examination(WASSCE) may not be able to secure admissions in the next academic session after failing to pass Mathematics and English.
The results were announced by the Head of theWest African Examinations Council(WAEC), National Office,Charles Eguriduon Monday.

It showed that only 616,370 candidates, representing a meagre 38.68 per cent of the 1,593,442 total candidates, were able to earn credit passes in at least five subjects, including English language and Mathematics which are required for admissions into most tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

What this means is that 977,072 candidates, over 61 percent of the total, will have no option but to miss out of the next academic year and wait for the 2016 examinations.

Alternatively, these candidates can sit for the November/December edition of the WASSCE or the November/December examination of theNational Examination Council(NECO).
A third option is to combine results from prior examinations.
Eguridu gave a detailed breakdown of the results.

"Out of all the candidates who sat for the exams, 758,849 candidates, representing 47.62 per cent, obtained six credits and above; 949,862 candidates representing 59.61 per cent obtained five credits and above, while 1,114,988 candidates (representing 69.97 per cent) obtained credits and above in four subjects," Eguridu said.

"In addition, 1,292,915 candidates, representing 78.81 per cent obtained credit and above in three subjects, while 1,376,743 candidates, representing 86.40 per cent obtained credit and above in two subjects."

Eguridu noted that the results of over a hundred thousand candidates are being withheld in connection with examination malpractices.

"The results of 118,101 candidates, representing 7.41 per cent, are being withheld in connection with various cases of examination malpractice as the cases are being investigated and the reports of the investigations will be presented to the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC)”
He added that, “95,373 candidates, representing 5.99 per cent, have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors, mainly traceable to the candidates and schools in the course of registration or writing the examination.”

9ja School Gist gathered that 20 of the 109 visually impaired candidates who registered for the examination obtained credits in five subjects, including English language and Mathematics.
Though the 2015 results are below expectations, it is important to note that there is a slight improvement going by the previous year’s examinations.

In 2014, only 529,425 candidates, representing 31.28 per cent had credit passes in at least five subjects, including English language and Mathematics, as against the 639,760, representing 38.30 percent, recorded in the 2013 examination.

University of Lagos UNILAG sweats over about 36,000 post UTME candidates

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) will host almost four times the 9,000 expected candidates for its 2015 post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) test.
The Deputy Registrar (Information) of the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB), Olagoke Oke, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Oke said the high number of candidates was caused by the reversal of the Board's decision to reassign candidates for the Post-UTME examination.
Protest following its redistribution policy, designed to help needy universities with lower number of candidates, as well as give the candidates better chances of admission, had led to a Federal government intervention.
Oke however noted that UNILAG is ready to handle the daunting number of candidates.
"I want to say that all logistics toward a smooth conduct of this examination are fully in place, we have always been ready for situations like this and have always got it right," he said.
"Before now, we were hoping to put logistics in place for the initial 9,000 candidates, but with the reversal of the decision, we now have to re-adjust and I want to say that we are fully prepared.
"All our computers and its accessories, the backups, alternative power supply as well as adequate personnel that will conduct the examination are all ready."
The exercise has been extended to three days because of the large number of candidates from Wednesday 12th to Friday 14th of August.

9ja School Gist gathered that the test is scheduled to hold from Wednesday 12th to Friday 14th of August.
The university was forced to extend the number of days for the test after it saw the about 9,000 expected candidates almost quadrupled.

It had planned to cut down the number of candidates by raising the cut-off marks from 200 to 250 for the various courses, failed following protests.
