This is to inform candidates in the underlisted categories that freshers portal will be re-opened as a LAST chance for payment of tuition fee between 12:00 midnight on Sunday 10th May and 12:00 midnight on Wednesday 13th May, 2015.

Concerned candidates are therefore advised to pay within the stipulated time, failing which the provisional admission offer will be forfeited.

(a) EX-pre-Degree Students that have JAMB and LAUTECH admission letters.

(B-) UTME Candidates that have LAUTECH admission letter and JAMB admission letter that read LAUTECH, and are already verified.

Any Candidate who does not belong in the listed categories above and pays tuition fee does so at his/her own risk.

However, any candidate who does not fall in the listed categories above, who has LAUTECH admission letter or JAMB admission letter that specified LAUTECH, but whose O’ Level results have not been verified or due to any technical problem is denied access on freshers portal to make payments should report to complain immediately at Room 5 in the Academic Affairs Unit, not later than Tuesday May 12, 2015.

EKSU Students Get Scholarship For Outstanding Performance

Cameroon – American Company (CAMAC) a Nigerian-based Allied Energy Company has awarded scholarship to two EKSU students in Geology Department and Mechanical Engineering for outstanding performance.
The recipients are Adebayo Abiodun Samuel who is currently on top of his class in the 400 level Geology class with a Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) of 4.08, Adebayo has maintained a consistent academic progress since his 100 level days.

The second scholarship recipient, Aderemi Adebayo Ayobami is the best 200 level student in Mechanical Engineering Department.

Presenting the two students to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oladipo Aina who was represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Ibiyinka Ogunlade, the Head of Department, Geology, and Head of Department, Mechanical Engineering, Dr. O. C. Ademilua and Dr. I. O. Oluwaleye respectively described the students as focused and brilliant who gave extraordinary attention to their studies.

The Executive Director, Corporate services of CAMAC, Mr. Olayide Olufemi said Ekiti State University was among selected Universities in Nigeria chosen for their Academic track record across all fields especially in Geology and Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Olufemi said the petroleum company has awarded similar scholarship to University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife and Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) with Ekiti State University as the fourth institution in the hierarchy of benefitting Universities.

The Assistant General Manager, Legal services of the company, Miss Gbemi Bamigboye presented each of the recipients a cheque of one hundred thousand naira each.
The Vice-Chancellor, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Ibiyinka Ogunlade thanked the company for its benevolence, adding that students of Ekiti State University has distinguished themselves recently in various international and national competitions.
Prof. Ogunlade also presented the team from CAMAC Petroleum Company with gifts while she urged the award recipients to keep the flag flying. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development) Prof. Victor Olufemi Adeoluwa in his remarks noted that the scholarship award further revealed the academic strength of Ekiti State University students.

Akwa Ibom Varsity Produces 2 First Class Graduates

Akwa Ibom State University(AKSU), on Saturday, 2nd May, 2015 held her maiden convocation ceremony at the Main Campus of the University, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin. The institution which produced 40 graduands from the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences had the following classes of Degrees: 2 First Class, 17 Second Class Upper, 19 Second Class Lower, 2 Third Class.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Eno J. Ibanga was filled with thanks to God and to the Governor, His Excellency, Chief Dr. Godswill Obot Akpabio, CON, for the privilege given to him to serve humanity. In his address, he acknowledged the contributions of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. S. W. Petters, FAS, who through commitment oversee the successful take-off, growth and sustainable development of the institution to the point of obtaining accreditation for the Faculty of natural and Applied Sciences.

According to him, he is proud to be the Vice-Chancellor graduating the first set of students of Akwa Ibom State University and said his mission and vision is to make Akwa Ibom State University a world class and top-ranked first class institution of excellence in all programmes through knowledge production, dissemination, teaching, research and service to mankind. He urged the pioneer graduands, who were found worthy in character and learning, to be good ambassadors of Akwa Ibom State University and exhibit exemplary virtue which will distinguish them from the larger society.

The Chancellor of the University and Emir of Kazaure, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Najib Hussaini Adamu, CON, earlier in his address, thanked the out-gone Vice-Chancellor, Prof. S. W. Petters for his tremendous contributions in nurturing the university and stressed the importance of acquiring knowledge. He called on the staff of the university to intensify effort on delivering excellent and sustainable education on the students so as to produce self-employed graduates.

OAU Lecturer Kidnapped, Driver Killed, N70m Demanded

Gunmen abducted Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU lecturer, killed his driver, burnt his car and demanded for N70m ransom.

A lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Dr. Femi Omisore, who was on his way to attend a funeral at Oye Ekiti in Ekiti State, was kidnapped by unidentified persons at the weekend.
The lecturer, it was learned, works at the Department of Environmental Design Ma-nagement of the institution.
His captors, who were said to be armed with guns, were said to have trailed him for a while.
The driver was said to have noticed them and tried to evade the gang, but the abductors managed to waylay Omisore’s vehicle.
On catching up with him, the hoodlums were said to have killed the driver out of anger and took Omisore to an unknown place.
The gunmen, it was further gathered, fired several shots at the petrol tank of the lecturer’s car and ensured that the car caught fire before they left the scene.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, OAU chapter, Dr. Caleb Aborisade, confirmed the incident.
Aborisade said, “According to the information I gathered from his family, Dr. Femi Omisore was kidnapped on Friday evening. He was going for a funeral ceremony in Oye Ekiti.
“I learnt that a member of his department was burying his father in Oye Ekiti and he was travelling there when he was kidnapped.
“The kidnappers used his telephone to call his wife this on Sunday morning and they demanded N70m ransom.
“We are not politicians; where do they expect us to get such amount?”
He appealed to Omsiore’s abductor to release the lecturer.
He said the family was not rich and could not afford to pay such a huge amount of money.
The abduction was also confirmed to our correspondent on the telephone by the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Osun State Polytechnic, Iree chapter, Mr. Dotun Omisore.
The union leader is a nephew of the abducted lecturer.
The ASUP chairman expressed concern at the way lecturers and members of their families were becoming targets of abduction.
He called on the government and security agencies in the country to do more to ensure security of lives and property of every Nigerian, saying kidnapping was becoming too rampant.
It will be recalled that gunmen had in December 2014 kidnapped the wife of ASUU Chairman, Osun State University chapter, Mrs. Funmilayo Abiona.

Gunman opens fire on Yobe school, injures 12

A gunman opened fire on Friday outside a school in northeast Nigeria‘s city of Potiskum, seriously wounding 12 studentsin an area repeatedly targeted by Boko Haram, a police officer and witnesses said.
“We have evacuated 12 people with serious gunshot wounds to hospital from the scene of the shooting attack,” said the officer, who requested anonymity.
Multiple students at the College of Administrative and Business Studies in Potiskum, Yobe state, said the attacker with explosives strapped to his body blew himself up when he ran out of ammunition, but the blast caused no other casualties.
Following a wave of attacks in the city, including on schools and colleges, students at CABS must pass through security screening before entering the campus.
The gunman fired on a crowd waiting at the gate to be screened, witnesses said.
“We had just started a class when we heard gunshots coming from the direction of the gates and we instantly realised we were under attack which made us to rush out of the class,” student Tijjani Musa said.
According to another student, Mustapha Umar, the gunman managed to pass through the gates amid the chaos that broke out after he began shooting.
“He kept firing sporadic shots,” but was chased by a group of students who were frantically trying to subdue him, said Umar.
“When he ran out of ammunition he detonated the explosives under his robe, killing himself but no one from the crowd,” Umar told AFP.
However, residents say three students were killed.

How FG sustains NYSC for nation building – Jonathan

Lagos—In what sounded like a fare-well speech, President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, affirmed that his administration at the onset recognized the strength and vision of the youth, that was why it worked with urgency to help them define their path, through the sustenance of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, scheme.

Jonathan, who spoke at the swearing-in ceremony of 2015 Batch ‘A’ Stream I corps members, deployed to Lagos State, at the NYSC Orientation Camp, in Iyana-Ipaja, boasted that with the necessary appropriation, his government was committed to supporting the NYSC scheme, thus positioning it as a leading light of youth organizations in world.

Represented by Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, President Jonathan said in the past 42 years, the NYSC has remained a beacon of hope in the country’s mission for a united nation, stating that it has exposed millions of youths to the cultures and traditions of Nigeria’s pluralistic society.

Affirming that his administration has put in place many beneficial interventions, which have increased the skills, self-confidence and self-sufficiency available to the youth, Jonathan, however urged the incoming administration of Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to continue to support and encourage corps members by fulfilling it’s statutory obligations to the scheme.

This is even as he commended the corps members who were sworn in for the successful completion of their academic endeavours, calling on them to dedicate themselves with renewed vigour, conviction and commitment to the progress and development of the nation.

Delta State University, DELSU resumption date for the commencement of 2nd semester, 2014/2015 academic session has been announced.

Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA newly inaugurated student leaders have been advised by the Vice-Chancellor to be servant leaders in their comportment and service delivery.

The newly inaugurated leaders of the Students Union Executive of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA, have been advised to be servant leaders in their comportment and service delivery. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebiyi Daramola and Dean, Students’ Affairs, Dr. Kayode Alese gave this counsel at the swearing in ceremony recently held for the new leaders. In his address at the occasion, Professor Daramola who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Development, Professor Tolulope Akinbogun admonished them to see leadership as a process by which a person influences others to accomplish set objectives and direct an organization in a way that makes it cohesive and coherent. “The underlying principles here are service, character and teamwork. Of greater importance is your character and the various choices of action or inaction you make while in office. Do not let your position get into your heads. You must be humble and approach every situation with maturity. The character you display during your tenure will show the kind of persons you are. Strive to serve others, even as you lead” he said.
Speaking on the challenges of leading, Daramola said “You must realize that your election as leaders of the Students’ Union will come with challenges. Note that your fellow students will not always agree with you, but you must work together with everyone in an open and cooperative manner to get things done”.
Professor Daramola also assured them of his administration’s readiness to impact leadership qualities in them. In view of this, he promised them local and international trainings as the culture of the University is. “We have consistently been sponsoring student leaders to attend leadership training programmes within and outside Nigeria for the past six years. Speaking further, Alese urged them to give the welfare of the electorate utmost priority and also abide by the rules guiding Studentship and Unionism. He also reminded them to avoid hooliganism because the University Management frowns at behaviour or actions that can project the University in bad light to the larger society.
Alese who also restated the open door policy of the Students Affairs Division, urged the students leaders to always intimate the University Management with their observations and challenges through his office. He promised prompt response to whatever issue raised. He also sternly warned them against students’ demonstration that can disrupt academic activities and elongate their stay on campus. “Avoid demonstration that can elongate your stay or even mar your future. Be responsible as future leaders. Management and staff are your parents, mentor, brothers and sisters. Relate freely with them because you have good lessons to learn from them” he added.
Alese also commended the University Management under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebiyi Daramola for prompt and positive response to students’ issues. Commending the Vice-Chancellor, Alese said “Sir, let me on behalf of the students appreciate your Management Team under your able leadership for your contributions to the welfare and wellbeing of the students. It takes a visionary leader like you to do this. The students appreciate all you have done for them and are ready to partner with the Management for the success of the Institution. This is to inform all the students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) that their first semester, 2014/2015 academic session examinations commencement date has been shifted by one week due to the effect of the Convocation Ceremonies as well as the challenges experienced with power and other allied services in the last one week.The commencement date for the 1stSemester examination for the 2014/2015 academic session is nowMonday, May 18, 2015.

NUC to Screen Certificates Obtained Abroad Before NYSC

NUC and the Federal Ministry of Education to screen degrees obtained by Nigerian students who studied abroad before they go for NYSC.

The Federal Government has constituted a committee to screen certificates obtained by Nigerian students who studied abroad, says Prof. Julius Okojie, the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC).
Okojie made this known while fielding questions from newsmen shortly after the presentation of licences to two new private universities on Thursday in Abuja.
According to Okojie, the committee comprises members from the NUC and the Federal Ministry of Education.
“When they come for NYSC, they are referred to the Ministry of Education to look at the quality of their certificates.

“Recently, the ministry decided to set up a joint committee of NUC and the Federal Ministry of Education to look at the quality of those certificates; the committee has been set up but it has not been inaugurated.

“In Ukraine, where we have many of our students for instance, it is not that all the universities are bad; some are really good but it depends on which one.

“Some of our students who attended universities in Ukraine pass through the UK and get a second degree; in some countries, you can buy a certificate in the airport.’’

He said that mere knowing that a foreign university was approved was not enough as the programme pursued by a student might not be approved.

The NUC boss had earlier expressed concern over the quality of universities Nigerian students attend in the West African sub-region, especially in Ghana.

Academic activity crippled as UI students protest death of colleague

The death of a first class 200 level student of Human Kinetic of the University of Ibadan, UI, identified as Mayowa Alaran yesterday led to a peaceful protest by students of the institution.

Alaran was said to have given up the ghost at the institution’s health centre at about 8:30pm yesterday after medical personnel refused to attend to him because those who took him to the clinic could not produce his clinic card.

The angry student in the course of the demonstration barricaded all entrances into the institution, and the expressway at Agbowo, thereby causing a gridlock.
According to the protesting students, the deceased at about 8pm slumped and started gasping for air while watching Barcelona versus Bayern Munich Champions League clash at India Hall, a female hostel situated in the institution.

They further added that when Mayowa slumped, students around called the university health centre to send ambulance over but they declined, stating that the only ambulance the centre has was indisposed.

One of the protesting student noted, “The medical students on ground tried their best. They gave him mouth to mouth respiration to resuscitate him to no avail.

Eventually, we carried him straight to the hospital. On getting to the hospital, a staff on duty did not accept him, asking the sick person who could not talk to produce his clinic card or tell them his matriculation number. About thirty minutes after, the boy gave up the ghost.”

While addressing journalist, the SUG President, Femi Odesola said, Mayowa died before getting to the health centre, hence leading to a violent protest by students around him.

The students have however argued that the SUG president usually betray them when it comes to responding to the plights of the students.

They also stressed the need for the Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Adewole to punish the staff who refused to attend to Mayowa, while demanding that, “ambulances be provided in all hall of residence as well as constant power supply.”

Gov.Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa state on Tuesday, promised automatic employment to any newly deployed corps member who marries an indigene of the state. He made the pledge while addressing 2015 NYSC Batch ‘A’ corp members, during their swearing in- ceremony at Magaji Dan Yamusa permanent NYSC Orientation camp in Keffi Local Government Area of the state.
He said that inter-marriage by corps members would not only foster unity, also promote peaceful co-existence among the people of the state and others states of the federation. He congratulated the corps members for the successful completion of their academic programmes at their various institutions of learning.
“I urge you to use the lessons and experience you gained during this orientation course to develop yourselves, your host communities, the state and the Nigeria at large.
“You should see yourselves as agent of positive change in the society. “I want to advise you to discharge your duties without fear or favour, and relate freely with your host communities. “I promise automatic employment to any NYSC Batch ‘A’ corps member who marries an indigenes in order to promote peaceful co-existence among the people of the state and others states of the country.” Al-Makura said.
Al-Makura also assured the corps members of adequate security throughout their service year in the state. He urged them to be security conscious, and to report any security breach to the appropriate authorities for necessary action. He urged them to be agents of national unity, and to shun all forms of violence capable of threatening the existing peace of the state and the country at large.
The governor reinstated the state government’s determination to continue to support the scheme, in order to better the welfare of the corps members. Earlier Mrs. Christy Uba, the Nasarawa state NYSC director, commended Gov.Al-Makura for his support to the scheme in the state. She said since the beginning of this orientation course, the corps members had exhibited good conduct. A total of 1931 corp members have so far registered at the orientation camp.

According to Mr. Ojijeogu, the committee reviewed a report on irregularity and special and clemency cases arising from the conduct of the May/June 2014 West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE) at the meeting. Moreover, the committee considered a report on the conduct of the November/December 2014 WASSCE, where cases of malpractices by some candidates were found and proven.

Reportedly, the entire results of such candidates involved in proven cases be cancelled.

“In addition, some candidates will also suffer other sanctions such as barring them from sitting for the council’s examinations for a certain number of years,” the statement says. The decisions of the committee would be implemented without delay, while the affected candidates would be duly informed by the council. However, the results of candidates exonerated by the committee would be released.

According to the communiqué, the committee’s sanctions will also be imposed on all the ad-hoc examination staff that condoned the malpractice.

“The ad-hoc examination functionaries, who participated during the November/December 2014 WASSCE, would also be reported to relevant bodies for disciplinary action. This will be in addition to the sanctions imposed on them by the council,” the statement says.

According to the communiqué, identified weaknesses of candidates are mentioned in the reports including poor mathematical skills and Geography 3.

It also identified other weaknesses ranging from poor handwriting, omission of units in their final answers to numerical problems in Physics 2 and inability to spell technical terms correctly as observed in Biology 3 and Health, among others.

In a bid to ensure quality service delivery in the University of Lagos, the Quality Assurance and Servicom Unit regularly conducts assessment of lectures delivered to students as well as students’ performance.
Under the exercise, students of the University are to assess their gains from the courses taken every semester before the start of examinations. This will provide a platform for students to offer their suggestions and opinions about all their courses and the lecturers who took the courses.
As a result, all students of the University are to log on to http://goo.gl/aPpfDw to fill (and submit onlineon or before Monday, May, 11, 2015.) the lecturers’ assessment form. Each student is expected to fill an assessment form for each course taken during the semester.

EFCC Arraigns 2 MAPOLY Students for $4500 Facebook Scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned 17 year old Ojosipe Adedayo and his 24-year old accomplice Owolabi Ahmed before Justice Atinuke Ipaye of a Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja on charges of fraud and obtaining under false pretences.
The prosecutor, Emmanuel Jackson said Adedayo, a HND II student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ogun State, an indigene of Alowonle Adigbe, Abeokuta, Ogun State duped one Adam Denborsky, an American citizen, of the sum of $2000 while pretending to be Marty Jason, a 30-year-old from Pennsylvania, USA.
Part of the charge reads, “Ojosipe a.k.a Marty Jason and Candice, on or about May 8, 2014 in Lagos had in your possession a document in which you represented yourself to be a single lady called Candice from Trenton, New Jersey, United States, who helps the needy to organise charity concerts and also help the homeless to get funds for Motherless Babies Home, which representations you knew to be false.”
Adedayo, who met his victim on Facebook, allegedly confessed to have received the money through Western Union and used the money to buy clothes and a phone.
On the other hand, Owolabi Ahmed, a.k.a Candice Skye, an HND II Electrical and Electronics student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ogun State was arraigned on three count charge of fraud for allegedly posing as an orphaned single girl, Candice Skye, from the United States.
Ahmed reportedly pretended to be a gemstone dealer in need of $2500 to facilitate the clearing of her goods with the Customs.
The prosecutor, Emmanuel Jackson said the offence is contrary to Section 6,8(b) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act NO 14 of 2006.
Both Adedayo and Ahmed pleaded not guilty and Justice Ipaye remanded them in prison custody and adjourned hearing of their bail application till the 21 of May, 2015.

Stakeholders Want Buhari to Address Varsity/Poly Dichotomy

The present arrangement where university graduates are rated above polytechnic graduates is not healthy.’
Stakeholders in the education sector charged President-Elect, Gen. Mohamadu Buhari (Rtd) to address the dichotomy between university and polytechnic education in the country. Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Osun State, Rector, Dr. Jacob Olusoji Agboola, argued that skills acquired in polytechnics are far better than that of universities.
Agboola further said that the type of education and skills acquired from the polytechnics are superior to that of university education, said polytechnic education makes its graduands independent and self reliant.
According to him “polytechnic education is for job creation and not job seeking. It prepares students to be self-reliant rather than be job seekers.” It will be recalled that the Committee on the Social Sector of the National Conference held in Abuja had recommended the removal of the dichotomy on university/polytechnic graduates. The recommendation was made during plenary at the conference by the Chairman of the Committee, Iyom Josephine Anenih while presenting the report of the committee.
Anenih urged the Federal Government to remove the dichotomy in order to restore dignity in our tertiary education. According to him, tertiary education in Nigeria is provided by colleges of education, polytechnics, monotechnics, vocational enterprise institutions and universities established by federal and state governments as well as private organisations.
He said: “Despite the number and variety of tertiary institutions, admission challenges are huge and seem to be perennial.
Each type of institution therefore has different mandates in terms of preparing graduates for society. Given this understanding, both institutions should be adequately equipped and funded to achieve their goals.” Reacting to the recommendation, delegate representing Ondo State, Professor Femi Mimiko while opposing the removal of the dichotomy warned the Committee against posing a wrong question, saying that what is important is making sure each perfects what it is set out to achieve as they have different purposes and objectives. He stressed the need for adequate funding of the educational system.
Stakeholders are still waiting for Buhari’s administration to implement the committee’s National Conference on this issue. Meanwhile, speaking on the number of students matriculated, the rector gave the number as 2,800 and warned them to shun any form of anti-social activities which he said could ruin their future. Agboola also advised them against other vices that could bring disrepute to the institution or that could prolong their academic pursuits on the campus. (Vanguard)

OAU Student Wants Buhari to Reverse Fees In Higher Institutions

Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU students’ union president urged Buhari to reverse education fees in higher institutions.
The President, Students Union Government of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Mr Omotoyo Akande, charged the in-coming president, Major General Mohammadu Buhari, to reverse school fees in tertiary institutions and ensure proper funding of education.
Akande made the call on Wednesday when he paid a visit to the Osogbo office of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to establish a relationship as he was set to take the leadership mantle of Student Union Government (SUG) of OAU.
“These new executive has the mission to establish a good relationship with the media, not to gain popularity but to publicize our position on national issues and issues affecting the students in the institution,’’ Akande said.
He said the in-coming federal administration should embark on policies that would change the old policies on education from 1999 to date, saying “this is a litmus test for the new administration’’.
According to him, the university authorities have consistently been increasing school fees, thereby making life unbearable for students and parents.
The student president said funding of education should be given priority over other sectors, describing it as the bedrock of development of the country.
He called on the president-elect to address immediately the issue of graduate unemployment in the country and make use of abundant human and natural resources wasting away in the country for its economic growth.
“Students voted the president-elect not because of his stature but because of his principle and credibility in the past, as a former Head of State.
“We believe his coming in at this time will be a panacea to scores of socio-economic problems bedeveiling the country under the rulership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the past 16 years of democracy,” he said.
In his remark, the State Correspondent of NAN, Mr Tola Okinbaloye, commended the students for seeing the agency as a friend that could assist in disseminating information about them and the education sector.
Okinbaloye, who advised the student union to ensure impartation of morals into students, also advised them to sustain a position of non-cultism in OAU.
He urged them to focus in pursuing their education, vision and mission as student leaders.
He assured the students of the agency’s support in the areas of publicity.(NAN)

Lagos State University, LASU students declared they have never been part of the crisis that led to the continued closure of the school.

Following the announcement made by the Special Adviser to the state governor, Babatunde Fashola, on Education, Otunba Fatai Olukoga, saying that the reason for the continued closure of the Lagos State University (LASU) was the inability of the parties involved in the crisis-staffs, students and the school management, to reach peaceful agreement, the students’ union leader reacted that the allegation levied against them was erroneous, declaring they have never been part of the crisis that led to the continued closure of the school.

Public Relations Officer of LASU Students’ Union, Mr. Fatai Adebanjo, in a statement , lamented that the sudden inclusion of the students who have being pleading with the parties involved in the crisis to sheath sword.

Adebanjo said that the comment by the state government was erroneous and could further escalate the crisis rocking the institution.

According to him, “We can state authoritatively that, this statement was made obviously to indict the Students’ Union of LASU because, the Students’ Union protested against the continued closure of our school.”

This mode of entry requires the following minimum qualifications:

•  Five credits in General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level or the Senior Secondary School (SSS) Certificate or Cambridge School  Certificate, which should include; English Language, Mathematics, Government or History, obtained in not more than two sittings.
• Five credits in National Examinations Council (NECO) which should include; English Language, Mathematics, Government or History, obtained in not more than two sittings; or
• Any other equivalent qualification subject to the ratification by the University Senate and the University Matriculation Board.
• In all these, the subjects required for the Joint Matriculation Examinations Board (JAMB) are English Language, Mathematics, Government or History plus any other relevant subject.

• Requirements as in 1 above in addition to any of these
• Any of the following qualifications:
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced level or Higher School Certificate (HSC) with a minimum of two principal papers (at appreciable high grades) of “A” to “C” only, obtained in one sitting in the following subjects: Government, Economics, History, or British Constitution or three subjects in one sitting with grades between “A” and “E”;
  • Diploma in Public Administration (DPA) with a credit grade or a minimum of merit grade, including other Diplomas such as social works; law, International Relations, etc., acceptable by the UMB or the Faculty Board;
  • Ordinary National Diploma (OND) from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology with a minimum of upper credit in relevant discipline such as Government, Political Science or any Social Science discipline.
  • National Certificate of Education (NCE) with specialization in Government or any social science discipline with a minimum of Upper credit.

Post-UTME Screening Test Would Soon Be Scrapped- Ojerinde

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Dibu Ojerinde, at the weekend said that the post-UTME screening tests conducted by institutions of higher learning would soon fizzle out with the introduction of the Computer-Based Test (CBT).

Ojerinde who made this know to Jambcbt.com.ng in llorin at the weekend, said that Computer-Based Test has reduce examination malpractice and other forms of irregularities.

Ojerinde said: “Post JAMB tests will die naturally. The way it will die is by the way of CBT. If we are sure that children who are doing the examinations are no longer cheating, if we are sure that the parents are no longer helping them to cheat, in fact it is practically impossible to come and help the children to do the examination now. I know some individuals got to the website to say, “come and increase your score” by whatever means, they can never do it. It is not possible and I have seen somebody who got two scores, he got a fake one and he got the correct one from us.

“So I think we are saying let us increase the standard of education, if the standard of examination is good, if children know that they cannot cheat, they will go back to their books…By and large, the standard of education will improve”.

“The introduction of the Computer-Based Test has reduced the level of leakages of exam papers. Anybody who goes out and says these are the questions they will ask me and that person believes that he is going in to meet the same kind of questions in the exam hall will be disappointed. He is not going to meet the same questions, so it is zero per cent leakage. I can prove that to you that examination malpractice has been completely reduced.

As the candidates sit by their systems, you can see them and their pictures on their screens. If a male is sitting down and you see a female picture, wouldn’t you know he’s not the right candidate? The system of biometrics will even expose them. The process of examination attendance list will expose them, so most of these problems that we encountered are gone.”

The registrar noted that the CBT method had maximally improved the performance of students, saying applicants who did CBT in the previous examination performed better than their counterparts who used pen and paper.

According to him, the CBT system is a way of preparing candidates ahead of the challenge in universities where they would be extensively drilled.

Scrapping weekend programmes is 'shutting out poor persons', Uduaghan tells NUC at DELSU

Gov. Uduaghan of Delta state has advised the National Universities Commission (NUC) against its plan to scrap weekend and continuous education programmes. He says the move will deny the poor access to education and lower literacy levels.

 

Delta State Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, has advised the National Universities Commission (NUC) not to continue with its plans to scrap weekend and continuous education programmes from the Nigerian University System (NUS)

Speaking last Saturday at the 9th Convocation of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Uduaghan said scrapping the programmes will have a negative consequence on the educational system.

The governor noted also that the move will completely shut out the poor from education.

“The scrapping of the weekend programmes and others have completely shut out poor persons who used the programmes to further their education," he said.

Uduaghan said the planned scrap, if effected, will also affect the already poor literacy level in the country because ""such programmes help to reduce the illiteracy level of the society."

DELSU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victor Peretimode, said the  9,607 students participated in the convocation, with 13 obtaining first class degrees.

Student drowns inside Kwara well… as man dies in rescue attempt

A double tragedy occurred last week at Igbawere village of Kwara state where a student fell into a well and died alongside a man who attempted to save his life.




A student, Akojede Sodeeq, and a man who tried to rescue him have both died inside a well at Igbawere village, Offa LGA of Kwara state.

Sodeeq, a National Diploma 1 student studying Business Management at the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State, was fetching water when he fell into the well, located beside the institution.

Student Pulse gathered that a local man who attempted to rescue him also fell into the well and died.

The double tragedy has left the entire community troubled.

Media reports described the deceased student as ‘gentle with a lot of drive.’

NYSC corps member jailed for life... 5 years after he killed a UK based Nigerian student and fled to Lagos

In 2009 Jeffrey Okafor fatally stabbed a 19-year-old Nigerian student, Carl Beatson-Asiedu, in the UK and fled to Nigeria where he lived a normal life for five years until he was caught in September 2014. After his tradition to the UK, he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

A Nigerian student, who fled from the UK in 2009 after he murdered another Nigerian, Carl Beatson-Asiedu, has been convicted and jailed for murder by a Woolwich Crown Court.

Jeffrey Okafor was found guilty after a trial at Woolwich Crown Court and was on Friday sentenced to life with a minimum 17 years in jail.

The 24-year-old Okafor had stabbed Beatson-Asiedu, a 19-year-old undergraduate and actor in the BBC children's series MI High, in the heart.

Beatson-Asiedu, also called DJ Charmz, had just performed at the Club Life nightclub in Kennington, south London before he was attacked by a group of men and stabbed once in the heart by Okafor in an argument.

Okafor then called his girlfriend, told her that he had just stabbed Beatson-Asiedu and told her to dispose of some clothes he wore when he committed the crime.

He then emptied his bank account, fled to Nigeria using his brother's passport and was the subject of a five-year international manhunt.

Back in Nigeria, Okafor completed a university degree and was deployed for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Det insp Alison Hepworth, said Okafor lived comfortably until he was arrested in September 2014 after information was passed on to the Nigerian authorities.

"Jeffrey Okafor fled the UK to Nigeria illegally under a false identity in the hope of evading capture," Hepworth said.

"He lived a relatively comfortable life and even had the opportunity to study at university.

"There is no doubt that he was supported by others both in the UK and in Nigeria."

The British High Commission in Abuja in a statement said Okafor's arrest was collaboration between the Nigerian and British police.

“With the help of the Nigeria Police Force and the British High Commission, detectives arrested Okafor on September 23, 2014. He was apprehended at a bank in Warri, Delta State, by Nigerian police officers," the statement read.

"Okafor was extradited back to the UK and arrived at London Heathrow Airport on November 6, 2014, where he was arrested and charged with Carl’s murder."

FUTA Appoints Arayela as Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Council confirms Professor Olatunde Arayela’s appointment as Federal University of Technology, Akure  (FUTA) Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

The Council of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, has confirmed the appointment of Professor Olatunde Arayela as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor [Academic] for a term of two years following his election by the Senate. In the letter conveying the appointment, the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr. (Mrs.) Modupe Ajayi, said Professor Arayela, whose appointment takes effect from April 1, 2015 will be responsible for academic administration, curriculum development, examination, admissions and other senate matters.

Arayela, 57, brings to his position a rich experience in academic and administration. He obtained B.Sc. (Arch) and M.Sc. (Arch) in 1981 and 1983 respectively from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He also has M.Sc. (Urban and Regional Planning) from the same Institution in 1996. He bagged Ph.D. (Architecture) from the Federal University of Technology, Akure in 2000.
He started his academic career in 1984 as Honorary Lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and was later offered appointment as an Assistant Lecturer in the same Institution after his NYSC. He was promoted Lecturer II in 1987 and in 1990 he transferred his services to the Federal University of Technology, Akure as Lecturer I. He became Senior Lecturer in 1996 and was promoted Reader in 2000. He became a substantive Professor of Architecture in February, 2002. He was also the pioneer Head of the Department of Architecture and served as Dean of the Postgraduate School from 2008 to 2010.
Arayela, who has served as chairman/member of several university committees was until his new appointment the Director of Academic Planning.
As a professional architect, Professor Arayela is registered with the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) and chartered by the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON). He was a member of the Executive Council of NIA (2005-2010) and a former Council Member of ARCON (2010-2013).
A widely travelled academic and researcher, Professor Arayela, by virtue of this position is a Principal Officer of the University and a member of Council. He is happily married with children.

4. Any other degree or HND holders in any other science subjects, provided O’level requirement stated above is satisfied.
5. Diploma (science education) from a recognized institution with credit grade above12 points in addition to O’level requirement stated above.

SPECIAL EDUCATION
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
For admission into the Special Education Programme, the following academic qualifications are required:
A)      FIVE CONTACT SESSION
1          Candidate with O’Level result or NCE (Special Education) with a minimum of (Pass) grade or below 12 points. Including a minimum of five credits passes at o’ level ‘SSCE/GCE/NECO/NABTEB’ (Mathematics and English Language inclusive) not more than two sittings. At least a PASS in Mathematics is required for the programme.
2          Nurses with single qualification (must satisfied o’ level requirements as stipulated in ‘i’ above).
3          Diploma in Special Education with at least Merit Pass from a recognized institution in addition to O’ level requirement in specified subjects above.
B)      FOUR CONTACT SESSION

1. NCE (Special Education) from a recognized institution with at least credit grade or above 12 points in addition to O’ level requirement in specified subject areas.
2. Nursing Certificate from Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria or its equivalent in addition to the O’Level requirements in the specified subjects.
3. Any degree holder who may want to re-enroll for a degree in Special Education.
4. Any other relevant qualification approved by the College of Education and the Senate of KWASU

TUITION FEE
A fee of N75, 000.00 to be paid into the Institute of Education account which is accessible upon visiting their website
