LASU students raise alarm over insecurity in school vicinity

The Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU) president, Tayo Sekoni has spoken out on a looming crisis within the school vicinity and why the students may start wielding weapons.
While lamenting the state of insecurity in Lagos state, Sekoni stated that some of his colleagues were held hostage for several days without proactive measures put in place to curb a recurrence.
In a statement made available to Naij.com, the students’ leader noted,“Are we going to wait until we witness an abduction of Chibok magnitude before we act? This is a state that its Governor ‘claimed’ to have spent hundreds of millions of naira on security.
“Despite these huge figures, we still can’t guarantee concrete security for students across the state. This is totally unacceptable!
“More worrisome, is the continuous ethnic clash in Lagos that has continued unabated.”
While accusing the governor of not being totally in control of the state, the students also explained the security threats posed to the entire LASU community based on the present reality in Lagos.
“LASU is very close to Alaba-Rago which accommodates some violent elements. These unscrupulous elements have taken over much of LASU lands for planting of vegetables and illegal erection of shops.
“It is very much imperative at this juncture to recall that, over 10 years ago, when an ethnic crisis of this magnitude hit Lagos, LASU students suffered greatly,”the statement read further.
“And as good students of History, we won’t allow such to repeat itself. Never!!! In this regard, If the present crisis continues to rage and it extends to Alaba-Rago, then LASU students will be exposed to dangers that may force over 60,000 LASUITES to arm and defend themselves.
“We beseech Governor Ambode,as a matter of urgency, to sit tight,act fast and put in place proactive measures on these issues before LASU students are forced to defend themselves; in the face of any threat to their lives, and properties,”the statement added.

University of Ibadan Students protest over lack of power, water

The student staged the protest on Saturday, March 5, to express their displeasure over poor facilities and epileptic power supply

Students of theUniversity of Ibadan, Oyo state, reportedly protested the lack of adequate water and power in the institution.
According toTheNation,the student staged the protest on Saturday, March 5, to express their displeasure over poor facilities and epileptic power supply which have been plaguing the university community for some time now.
They barricaded the gate around 11:05am while chanting songs and carrying placards with the messages, ‘no light, no water.'

The aggrieved students accused the school authorities of ignoring the problems in spite of the several efforts made to call its attention to the situation.

President of the Students’ Union,Mr. Olateju Oladimeji,lamented that the union had written the authorities over the problem but that there had been no positive response.

He said: “We have been living on the campus without electricity and water for the past three weeks. Sanitary situation on the campus is currently at its lowest and we notified the school authority, but it refused to take any action. The management is insensitive to our plight.”

Academic ExcellenceNigerian students come out on top in Ghanaian university

Two Nigerian students,Peter Hunnoho MosesandOdinaka Abel Favourhave won the top prizes during the 9th Graduation Congregation of the Accra Institute of Technology (AIT),Ghana.

According to a statement released by the University, Peter, who graduated with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Technology was judged the overall best student of the graduation class with a cumulative GPA of 3.99.

Odinaka was also honoured as the overall best student in the Female category. She graduated with a First Class Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a cumulative GPA of 3.90.

Professor Clement Dzidonu, the President of the University observed that this is a major achievement given that, AIT has the toughest and the highest grading system within the university system in Ghana.
"To get an A grade in a subject at AIT you must score above 90 and to get a First Class with a cumulative GPA close to the maximum 4.2, means that a student must consistently get A grades across the board’, Professor Dzidonu noted.
The Deputy Minister for Education, responsible for Tertiary Education, Hon. Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa congratulated those receiving the overall best graduating student awards and noted that, Ghana is currently attracting over seven thousandforeign studentsfrom close to sixty countries to its private and public universities annually.

2. Click on Student menu and select MAKE PAYMENT option. You will be redirected to http://portals.aksu.edu.ng
3. Click on the link “REGISTER NOW” under “ADMISSION” Menu
4. Enter your Jamb Registration Number without any space and click on login.
5. A form containing your basic information appears (Personal Information) is displayed.
6. Fill the other required information and click on “CONTINUE BUTTON”.
7. Repeat step 5 above for other stages (Passport Upload, Contact Details, and Academic Details).
8. A preview page appears, confirm the information before clicking on the continue button.

D. COLLECTION OF OTHER REGISTRATION MATERIALS
After clearance and payment of fees, candidates should proceed to their respective faculties where they will be issued with the following registration materials by the Faculty Officer:

(ii) Class Admit Cards
After the faculty registration, candidates will also proceed to their respective departments for their departmental registration.
E. REGISTRATION AT THE MEDICAL CENTRES
After registration in the faculties and departments, fresh students should proceed to the University’s Medical Centre for their medical registration and submit themselves for medical examination.
F. REGISTRATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
All duly registered students must also register and obtain a Library Identification Card for the use of the University Library. Note that no student will be admitted into the University Library without being duly registered and issued with the current University Library identification card.
G. ISSUANCE OF STUDENTS’ IDENTIFICATION CARD
After completion of registration in all the departments as stated above, students should proceed to the Students’ Affairs Division for registration and issuance of student’s identification card.

UNILAG Chancellor's brother killed during convocation

Kyari was part of the dignitaries in the entourage that accompanied the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi, to Lagos for his investiture as the UNILAG Chancellor.

Former Auditor-General of Borno State,Mallam Kaka Kyariwas among those who lost their lives during theUniversity of Lagosconvocation ceremonies on Thursday, March 3.

According to Punch reports, Kyari was part of the dignitaries in the entourage that accompanied the Shehu of Borno,Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi, to Lagos for his investiture as theUNILAGChancellor.
It was learnt that another man, whose identity had yet to be ascertained, was allegedly shot by security operatives at the university’s gate.

Kyari reportedly died in a fire incident that occurred on Thursday at about 2am at the university’s guesthouse.
Though the fire affected five rooms in the building, the cause of the inferno has not been ascertained.

A source told Punch that "the incident happened on Thursday morning, but the activities accompanying the three-day convocation did not allow people to know of the incident. I also gathered that the remains of the deceased have been conveyed to Borno State for burial.”

In a statement Deputy Registrar/Head of Information Unit of the university,Mr. Toyin Adebule, Kyari's death was confirmed;
“The Management of the University of Lagos regrets to inform the general public that there was a fire incident at the university guesthouse at about 2am on Tuesday, March 1, 2016.

“The fire occurred in the A Wing and affected rooms A12, A13 and A14. The university fire service was able to curtail the fire from spreading. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

“Sadly, the incident claimed the life of one of our guests, Alhaji Kaka Kyari, a former Auditor General, Borno State, who was on the entourage of the chancellor and was laid to rest according to Islamic injunctions today, March 3, 2016 in Borno State.

“The pro-chancellor, vice-chancellor, council members, management, staff and students of the University of Lagos commiserate with our chancellor and the people of Borno State on the demise of Alhaji Kaka Kyari.”

The ransom demanded by the abductors was reduced to N10 million by the kidnappers, while the school was pleading with N2 million.

On Monday, 29th of February, three female students of theBabington Macaulay ‎Junior Seminary School, a private school in Ikorodu, Lagos wereabducted by a group of gunmen.

Since then, negotiations with the kidnappers has been ongoing with the aim of getting the girls back safely.

According to Vanguard, the ransom demanded by the abductors was reduced to N10 million by the kidnappers, while the school was pleading with N2 million.

An accord on their release was reportedly reached between the negotiating parties at the early hours of yesterday. But at 5p.m., there was reportedly no news from the kidnappers on where the students would be picked, owing to disagreement over ransom.

Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly,Mudashiru Obasa, has reacted to this ordeal, saying there was need for the creation of state police. Other members also took turns to condemn the incident, saying if Federal Government allows creation of state police, crimes will be minimised.

The Lagos State chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday also called for the immediate release of the three kidnapped students.

The party, through the Publicity Secretary, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, condemned the kidnap, describing it as callous and inhuman, carried out by criminals who wanted to test the resolve of the present state government to drastically reduce criminality in the state.

The traditional head of the area where the school is located, Baale of Lugbusi,Chief Michael Omolojuhas also said “the school needs a better and effective security.

“They should employ security officials to man the place on a 24-hour basis. We have called on our subjects to be vigilant and report any strange movement to government," he added.

51 students bag first class in UNIOSUN

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of University of Osun, Professor Oguntola Alamu, on Friday, said that the university was set to graduate 3,164 students at its fourth and fifth convocation ceremony, which would hold on the 8th of March, 2016
Alamu disclosed this in Osogbo while briefing journalists on the forth-coming convocation ceremony.
He explained that the total of 3,164 students from six faculties, for the 2013/2014, and 2014/2015 academic sessions would be convocated.
According to him, while 27 students bagged a first class honour for the 2013/2014 session, 24 students had first class in the 2014/2015 academic session, making a total of 51 first class students.
Alamu said: “the citadel in its tradition of excellence in teaching and character modelling had been able to produce intellectuals that were making wave all over the world. We remained focused, and committed to full implementation and evaluation of the University 2012-2016 Strategic plan.
“Since the last convocation ceremony in 2014, Osun State University has continued to make progress in teaching, research, community service, physical and infrastructural development. Bayero University, Kano, BUK expels 44, rusticates 4 and exonerates 8 students of the institution.
Bayero University, Kano Senate at its 338thmeeting held on Wednesday, 27thJanuary, 2016 has expelled 44 students for being involved in the examinations misconduct.
This followed the recommendations from the 163rdSenate Business Committee meeting held on Tuesday, 19thJanuary, 2016.
The Senate Business Committee (SBC) considered submissions from Faculties, the Senate Committee on Examinations Misconduct and Leakages, School of Continuing Education (SCE) and results from the School of General Studies and Entrepreneurship Studies.
The affected students were expelled in accordance with category 19.17 (Ai, iii, iv, v, vii, x, xii & xiii) as the case may be. They are:

How To Check JAMB 2016 Result Without a Scratch Card

This is to inform all candidates who duly registered and participated in the ongoing 2016 Computer Based Test (CBT) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) that they can check results without scratch card.

The results of the 2016 Computer Based Test (CBT) result has been release and have been fully uploaded on JAMB portal. The jamb result checker 2016 website will have the complete lists of all candidates who participated in the 2016 UTME CBT examination.

The result is sent to candidates via SMS at the end of the day’s exam. JAMB candidates who provided correct phone numbers during registration will get their results.

Candidates can as well check the 2016 JAMB Results for FREE without the required e-Bundle PIN using JAMB e-Facility Apps.

Follow the steps below to check JAMB Result without a Scratch card;

i) For Android Users: Simply browse to Google play store on your android mobile phones, then download the JAMB Mobile Services e-Facility and check your Result.

ii) For Windows Mobile Users: Open the Windows App Store on your device. Search for and install the JAMB Mobile Services e-Facility, then check your Result with it.

Breaking News: Senate Reduces UTME Registration Fee To N2,500h

Report reaching us has it that the Senate has reduce the registration fee of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to N2,500 from N5,650 that was paid by applicants who had registered in this year Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

At the plenary session today, the senators also extended JAMB entrance examination validity period to three years from one year..

The Senate adopted the recommendation of its committee that JAMB fee should not exceed N2,500, while institution and course forms and all other incidental activities around the examination should be free.

Henceforth, Candidates who intend to register for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) can obtain JAMB application forms for N2,500

4. Corrections for correctable information continues for all successfully registered PCMs
I. Corrections on date of birth: this can be done by the PCMs using WAEC or NABTEB verification PIN.
II. Corrections of any information uploaded by school eg Jamb, graduation date, matric number, sex, grade etc: PCMs should tell his sch to write officially to NYSC.
III. Correction of name spelling mistake: this can be done at Camp.
IV. Correction of any info inputted by PCMs during registration eg phone number, address, LGA, dates of primary and second sch etc: PCM should send application to NYSC viainfo@ nysc.gov.ng. The application should be addressed to Director ICT.
