Authority of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) released hard-to-rectify mistakes during registration and how to avoid them during registration:
1. Registration by proxy: affected PCM can not register at camp because the biometrics is not his/hers.
2. Mixed up registration: some cyber cafe operators have the habit of registering more than one persons at a time in one computer by opening 2 or more tabs on the same browser. This causes mix-up in the PCMs information which is hard to rectify. We advise you to sit with the person registering you and make sure he doesn’t register another person at same time he registers u. When you want go somewhere before he finishes with u, tell him to log you out before he starts with somebody.
3. Don’t allow cafe operator to use his email address for you. If you don’t have email, let him create one for you and make sure he gives you the details…email address and the password. Keep them safe because you need them.

4. For married women, make sure you go with your marital documents, choose married online and upload them during registration. In the column to input your spouse surname, make sure you put the correct surname you are using after marriage.
5. For sick person, make sure you indicate it and the type of sickness, also provide all other details and upload medical report .
6. For millitary and SSS, make sure you indicate and provide all other relevant info and upload the required documents.
7. If you are a foreign trained graduate, make sure you read the registration requirements at nysc.gov.ng and upload all required documents. Try to log into your account time to time for information asking you to update some of your documents. Failure to do so may lead you not mobilised eventually

in Lagos Government introduces PIN for students

The Lagos State Government has announced the introduction of Personal Identification Number (LASPIN) to capture the biometrics of students in all public primary and secondary schools.

The statement quoted the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, as saying that LASPIN would be a unique identity for each student throughout his or her study in the state’s education system.

Adebule, who supervises the ministry, said the transfer process of students in the state would now be streamlined, using the LASPIN.

According to her, LASPIN will control and discourage abuses and make the process of transfer from one school to another, more transparent.

The deputy governor was also quoted as expressing government’s determination to improve on the pass ratings for Lagos State students in external examinations from three per cent to 60 per cent by 2019.

She said that government was committed to the adoption of e-curriculum platform/solution to assist teachers in accessing the subject curriculum and syllabus directly from the National Education Research and Development Council (NERDC).

"The introduction and adoption of e-curriculum platform/solution will guarantee uniformity and ease the development of lesson plan and teacher’s guide from the ministry’s portal,’’ she said.

Adebule said that the intensive monitoring and supervision of teachings and learning activities in schools by the quality assurance office were aimed at meeting the set standards.

The deputy governor said the standards were set by both the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO).

"Government will undertake the systematic introduction and exposure of students to ICT- based teaching and learning tools (e.g. learning tablets) starting from the senior secondary level.

"This is in order to make our teachers and students compete globally and be compliant with modern trend,’’ she said in the statement.

Ambrose Alli University Fire guts 2 varsity departments

Two departments of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma-Edo State reportedly caught fire on Thursday, February 4, Nigerian  Observer reports.

The fire which affected Civil Engineering and philosophy, destroyed vital documents and property worth millions of naira.

Circumstances surrounding the fire is yet unclear but most were of the belief that this could have been an intentional act as the office of the exam officer of civil engineering, containing students’ results, examination scripts and records were burnt to ashes.

A staff of the university who wishes to go unnamed said he saw a suspected arsonist pouring liquid substance suspect to be fuel on an air conditioner before striking a match, after which he allegedly ran away.

While the department of philosophy was completely razed down, the fire was curtailed at civil engineering department by efforts of the dean of students, Chief Security Officer, members of students’ union government and some others.

It was also reported that students took advantage of the incident to loot away valuable property, including generator sets, plasma television, computer UPS, laptops and more.

Properties reportedly destroyed in the fire include  air conditioners, ceiling fans, office cabinets, refrigerators, office chairs and tables, computers, television and others.

When contacted, a senior staff in the University assured that students’ results were salvaged from the inferno.

NYSCStates suspend monthly allowance for corpers

“We have not been paid a dime since November last year. What we were told at the beginning was that the government would pay us after the end of our service year, but we later learnt that the promise was just fake.

 

Some states have reportedly suspended payments of monthly allowance for members of the National Youth Service Corps due to the economic crunch affecting the country.

According to Saturday Punch, some of the states stopped paying the allowances more than one year ago.

Before the economic challenges, some states in Nigeria pay the corpers a stipend to augment the N19, 800 which was being given by the Federal Government.

Most states are reportedly now struggling with the economic downturn and have had to suspend the payment leaving the corpers to depend solely on the N19,800 paid by the Federal government.

The situation is more pronounced in Kwara State, where the government has not paid corps members serving in the state for more than two years now.

One of the corps member in the state has lamented that the last time they had been paid their stipend was in October 2015.

He said, “We have not been paid a dime since November last year. What we were told at the beginning was that the government would pay us after the end of our service year, but we later learnt that the promise was just fake.”

Another Corps member in Bauchi said, “No explanation has been given as to why we have not been paid our allowances. We have not been paid for January. We don’t know what is happening; all the state government just told us is that we should bear with it.”

Those serving in Ekiti State said they had not received anything since they were deployed in the state last year.

A corps member posted to one of the ministries who does not want his name mentioned, said, “Since I was deployed in this ministry last year, I have not received anything. My predecessors said they were being paid N1,250 before it was increased to N3,000, but since our batch came, we have not received anything from the state government.”

Batch “A” and batch “B” corps members deployed in Osun State also said they had not received a dime from the state government since May and October, 2015 respectively.

Another corps member, who wants to be identified as Okoli, urged the state government to pay them, considering the economic situation in the country.

“It will go a long way in augmenting the N19,800 allowance being paid by the Federal Government,” Okoli said.

Corps members in Niger, Rivers, Cross River, Edo and Sokoto states also complained that they had yet to be paid by the state government.

In Auchi Poly lecturers embark on strike over nonpayment of salaries

We are on indefinite strike because the polytechnic management has refused to pay us our December and January salaries.

Academic activities at Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo, were on Monday paralysed following indefinite strike embarked on by members of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) over nonpayment of two months’ salaries.

A correspondent of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited the school premises, reports that the lecture halls and offices were locked.

The polytechnic secondary school was also affected as teachers and students were asked to stay at home.

The Chairman of Auchi Branch of ASUP, Mr Abdulazeez Isah, said the strike, which commenced on Monday, would be indefinite until the management paid their outstanding salaries.

"We are on indefinite strike because the polytechnic management has refused to pay us our December and January salaries.

"Lecturers have to stay away from work because the nonpayment of their salaries has made life difficult for them," he said.

Isah said his members had resolved that they would not return to the classrooms until the outstanding salaries were paid.

IBBU Could Not Admit More Candidates For 2015/2016 Due To Low Admission Quota - VC

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) Lapai has disclosed that the university could not admit more than 30 per cent of those who applied for admission in the 2015/2016 session due to low admission quota to the institution by NUC.
He revealed this during the matriculation ceremony of 2,956 new students for the 2015/2016 academic session held recently.
According to him, out of the 8,186 students that applied for admission only 3,078 were offered admission representing 30 per cent.

IBBU Awards Scholarship To 18 Students For Outstanding Academic Perfomance

18 students of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) Lapai have been awarded scholarship by the institution for excellent academic performance in the 2014/2015 academic session.

UNILAG 'No lecturers will maltreat you' HOD tells new students

She said the school would not tolerate indiscipline, urging the students to abstain from what could make them lose their admission.
The Head of Department (HOD) of Mass Communication of University of Lagos (UNILAG),Dr Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, has assured freshers that if they are well behaved, they will not have any problems with lecturers,TheNationreports.

'Once you are obedient, no lecturer will maltreat you,” she said when warning them against unlawful organisation
Ndisika also warned freshers against begging their teachers for marks.

The department, she said, would recommend expulsion for any student who engages in such act. She said the school would not tolerate indiscipline, urging the students to abstain from what could make them lose their admission.

She spoke last Friday at an orientation organised by the Mass Communication Students’ Association (MCSA) for the freshers.

She said punctuality and obedience remained were the cornerstone of their success, adding that the department was concerned about how students would get the best training to help them survive.
Ogwezzy, an associate professor of Mass Communication, said: “Let me emphasise that punctuality and class attendance are very highly required. If any student doesn’t have up to 65 per cent attendance, the university rule is that such a student won’t write the examination. Therefore, you must manage your time well.”

Victims of the fire which gutted Okeke Hall of Residence at theUniversity of Nigeria,Nsukka (UNN) have now been reolocated to new hostels, TheNation reports.

The fire incident took place on December 23 when a two-storey female hostel went up in flame due to a power surge. No fewer than 32 rooms were razed and prosperity worth millions of naira destroyed.

A statement by Dean, Students’ Affairs (DSA), Prof Peter Akah said the students were allotted bed space on first-come-first-served basis. The students, it added, presented their original online allocation papers and identity cards that enabled management to relocate them to Nkrumah Hall, Mary Slessor Hall and Zik’s Flat Hostel.

Ugochi Okechukwu, a 100-Level English and Literary Studies student, said management’s decision took them by surprise.

Her words: “The management has done its best by giving us another hostel. It is a good development we have been relocated. They did not leave us hanging around in the school, looking for accommodation and trying to pair room with friends. We are surprised by the school decision.”

While the fire victims have settle down in their new accommodation, some have urged the school to compensate them for their documents and properties lost in the inferno. A 300-Level Economics student, who identified herself as Adaeze, said allocation of new hostels to the fire victims was not enough to compensate the students.

She said: “Most of them had travelled when the incident happened, so they could not evacuate their properties while their rooms were being razed. I expected the school to compensate them, because some of them lost vital documents. The school should be commended for allocating new hostels to them, but I believe the students deserve more.”

At the just concluded Campus Holy Ghost service, over 100 undergraduates of theUniversity of Ibadanand theObafemi Awolowo University, Ile Iferenounced cultism, Punch reports.
During preaching, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG lead pastor scolded students involved in cultism and encouraged them to come out of the congregation and give their lives to Christs.
“I want those of you who have been deceived into joining any cult group to come forward and my God will set you free.
“Come now, I want to pray for you, the Lord wants to set you free. Come and be free, come to the one who can set you free,” the pastor said.
Spokesperson of OAU,Abiodun Olanrewaju, however said that it is possible that not all the students who repented where from the University as students from other institution attended the service.
“Some students came from different higher institutions for the service. Some of them hearkened to the call of God made by Baba Adeboye.
“We are happy that youths of this country are renouncing cultism and embracing God. It shows that there is a bright future for this country. We are happy and I am sure the people of Nigeria are happy about this,” he said.

On its website, the institution writes, “At just 26 years of age, Romola has set a record in being the youngest person to obtain a Doctor of Laws degree (LLD) in the 30-year history of the Centre for Human Rights.
Furthermore, she is only the second youngest person to achieve this in the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria since its establishment 107 years ago. She distinguished herself by completing the LLD in under 3 years.
This record is in keeping with a pattern of excellence which Romola has maintained since her undergraduate years at Lagos State University (LASU) where she was awarded the Taslim Olawale Elias Prize for the Best Student in International Law.

Romola’s relationship with the Centre for Human Rights began from her participation in the 2008 African Human Rights Moot Court Competition. In 2012, she was selected as a DAAD scholar to study for the LLM/MPhil degree in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa. She graduated cum laude, earning two awards: the Kéba M’Baye award for the overall Best Dissertation and the Victor Dankwa prize for the Best Performance in the module: Human Rights in Africa.
Her excellent record earned her admission to the Centre’s doctoral programme in 2013. Her thesis, supervised by Prof Frans Viljoen was titled Development-induced displacement in Africa: Striking a balance between the imperative of development and the rights of persons likely to be displaced. In her thesis, Romola analyzed the obligation in article 10 of the African Union Convention in relation to the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa. Her study, one of the first on this Convention, focused specifically on development-induced displacement which is one of the root causes of internal displacement in Africa.”
