Only one Nigerian university ranked among world’s top 800 universities

Only one Nigerian university is ranked among the top 800 universities in the world, according to TimesHigher Education World University Rankingsfor 2015/2016 released this week.
PREMIUM TIMES’analysis of the report showed that the University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s oldest university, is ranked 601st of the world’s top 800 universities featured in the survey, 200 steps lower than Makerere University, Uganda, which is ranked 401st.
The ranking was released on Wednesday, September 30, 2015.

The University of Cape Town, South Africa, at 120th position, is the highest ranked university in Africa, 481 steps higher than the University of Ibadan.
Five other South African universities are included in the list of top notch universities in the world, making it the highest from a single African country.

They are University of Witwatersrand (20ist); Stellenbosch University (301st); University of KwaZulu-Natal (401st); University of Pretoria (501st); and University of South Africa (601st).
Three Egyptian universities, Alexandria University, Cairo University, and Suez Canal University are all ranked 601st on the list.
Just like Nigeria and Uganda, only one Ghanaian university, the University of Ghana is on the list, and it is ranked 601st.
Morocco too has only one university, University of Marrakech Cadi Ayyad (601th), on the list.
Altogether, 13 universities from six African countries are included among the top 800 universities in the world.

But despite having only one university in the ranking, this year’s rating is a great leap for Nigeria. No Nigerian university has featured in the ranking since 2011 when the survey began.

The California Institute of Technology, United States, occupies the number one spot in the world.

The University of Oxford, United Kingdom is on the 2nd position, while Stanford University, United States and University of Cambridge, United Kingdom are on the 3rd and 4th positions respectively.
Top Ten World’s University for 2015/2016
Other top ranked institutions are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, United States (5th); Harvard University, United States (6th); Princeton University, United States (7th); Imperial College London, United Kingdom (8th); ETH Zurich-Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Switzerland (9th); and University of Chicago, United States (10th).

Ekiti students protest fee hike, Fayose’s policies

Students in Ekiti State on Thursday trooped to the streets to protest against high school fees in state-owned institutions.

Acting under the aegis of the Federation of Ekiti State Students Union and the National Association of Nigeria Students, they said the policies introduced by Governor Ayodele Fayose were anti-masses.

They carried placards with various inscriptions including, ‘Ekiti Students Pass Vote of No Confidence in Fayose’, ‘Primary/Secondary Education Must Be Free in Ekiti’, ‘Ekiti Bursary, Nothing But A Scam’, ‘Blackout in Ekiti State University’, ‘College of Education, Ikere Ekiti Fees Must Be Reduced’, and ‘No To N50,000 Acceptance Fee at College of Health Technology, Ijero’.
They said they chose to stage the protest on the 19th anniversary of the creation of Ekiti State to send a message that all was not well in the state and to kick against “bad government policies” in education sector.
The protest caused a huge traffic snarl at Ijigbo roundabout with some officers of the Department of State Services on hand to prevent hoodlums from hijacking the protest.

FESSU National President, Peter Obayemi, lamented that students no longer had access to bursary from the state government, accusing officials of the state scholarship board of underhand dealings.

Obayemi claimed that he was detained on the orders of a top government official over his agitation for the payment of bursary to Ekiti students at the State Scholarship Board.

He said the student bodies would no longer tolerate intimidation by any government official, no matter how highly placed, saying the Fayose-led administration had already declared war on students by its actions so far.
Obayemi said, “We should let the whole world know that Ekiti State government has neglected students. They organised Education Summit and they refused to invite students and instead they invited artisans, okada riders and market women.
“We are saying no to privatisation of public schools in Ekiti. We reject all sorts of fees that have been reintroduced in public schools.

“Government used to pay WAEC fees for students; this government says it will no longer pay WAEC fees. We reject all these anti-student and anti-education policies.

“Many students have lost the joy of being admitted to the College of Health Science and Technology, Ijero Ekiti, as they were unable to pay the N50,000 acceptance fee before the deadline.

“The Ijero College of Health Science and Technology is the only school in Nigeria paying such an outrageous acceptance fee of N50,000 that is non-refundable and this does not guarantee their admission.”
A NANS executive member, Oluwabunmi Aduloju, condemned the detention of FESSU boss on the order of the state government for agitating for the students’ bursary.
