LASU Dean says NUC’s non-accreditation responsible for non-matriculation of Law students

Authorities of theLagosState University(LASU) on Friday said that it would not matriculate its newly admitted 100-level 2014/2015 Law students until the law programme had been accredited by theNational Universities Commission(NUC).
The Dean, Students Affairs, professorKabir Ak‎inyemi, told theNews Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Lagos.
Akinyemi said that the university could not matriculate the students because‎ the university was awaiting the accreditation of its Faculty of Law’s courses by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
"The new 100-level law students‎ are not yet bona fide students of the institution because they have not been matriculated and have no matriculation numbers.
"The university is not bound by any law to enroll students, whose courses have not been accredited‎", he said.
Akinyemi said that LASU actually did not advertise for vacancy in its Faculty of Law and other departments yet-to-be accredited, but theJoint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) did.
"As at the time the students chose the course in JAMB, the record of the university was not updated on JAMB website; and that is the problem we have with JAMB,’’ he said.
The don said that ‎it was until the faculty, among others had been accredited, before the fate of the students could be decided.
"I cannot say if the admission of the students is still valid after the NUC will have done its accreditation, because the university's senate will still have to sit, to decide on that", he said.

Open UniversityObasanjo blasts CLE for blocking NOUN graduates from Nigerian Law School

Former president,Olusegun Obasanjo, has criticized theCouncil for Legal Education(CLE) over its refusal to admit graduates ofNational Open University of Nigeria(NOUN) into the Nigerian Law School.
Speaking with some members of the NOUN Law Students Association of Nigeria and other alumni of the university at his Hilltop mansion in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo said he had written the CLE over the controversial issue.
Obasanjo, a two-time student of NOUN, said the reason given for the alleged restriction is baseless, arguing that he received physical lectures during his studies at the school.
“I’ve written to the CLE but it seems some people out there didn’t get it right," he said.
"They said the school of law is offering correspondence programmes and I said it to anyone I met that I graduated from the school and I am presently running my master and Ph.D in NOUN, so the notion is incorrect."

The former President said CLE's action will be resisted because it undermines the institution.
He however urged the graduates to be patient with the authorities as accreditation is pursued.
Obasanjo enrolled at NOUN for a Post Graduate Diploma in Christian Theology at the university in November 2006, graduating in 2009 beforereturning for a Master’s Degreein the same field.
Only last month, NOUN Vice Chancellor, ProfessorVincent Ado Tenebe, CLE embargo over its graduates.
In a recent interview, he said thedistance learning system offered by NOUNis inevitable because there are far too few universities in the country to be able to serve the entire Nigerian population.

Kogi State University 3'cultists'in jail after threatening to kill lecturer if they fail his course

Police in Kogi state have arrested three student of theKogi State University(KSU), Anyigba, for threatening to kill one of their lecturers over examination grades.
The suspects,Daniel Attah,Solomon IdamahareandAdinoyi Bello, all students of the Department of Economics, allegedly made the threat after ECO 307 examination, a course taught by one Dr A.O. Adofu.
According to letter written by the school Chief Security Coordinator (CSO),Major M. J. Adama(rtd), to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), the trio had told Adofu that they would kill him if they scored an F grade.
The CSO noted that the Economics department has the highest cases of cult related crimes, hence the reason for taking the threat serious.

He revealed that a lecturer of the same department,Alehile Kehinde Samuel, was recently shot at his residence.
Confirming the students' arrest, KSU Vice Chancellor, Prof Hassan Isah, said investigations are ongoing.
“I can confirm three students were arrested on allegation of threatening their lecturer," Isah said.

NYSC Commenced Clearance Biometric Data Capture For Corps Members

In an effort to monitor the activities of corps members in their respective place of primary assignment, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commenced clearance based on biometric data capture for corps members.
This, it said, will address issues bothering on absenteeism from place of assignment and irregularity in signature which often leads to non-payment of monthly allowances and eradicate situations where its staff, connive with corps members for clearance.
Speaking at the launching of the biometrics data capture, at the Kuje Area Council, Abuja, on Thursday, the Director-General, NYSC, Brigadier-General Johnson Olawumi, said the demonstration is the second phase of digitalising the scheme to enhance its performances.
He stated that the biometrics data capture scheduled to kick-start this month , will take effect on the 2014 Batch C and 2015 Batch A corps members.

Olawumi expressed hope that the process, which will be pioneered in Lagos and the entire Federal Capital Territory (FCT), would be replicated in other states of the federation by 2016.
He further warned that the scheme will not condone effort by its staff to sabotage the initiative, adding that about five of its staff, who were found conniving with corps members on their monthly clearance are currently facing disciplinary action.
He stressed that even with this, some of the erring members will be dismissed as a deterrent to others.
The exercise witnessed the biometric capture of 15 corps members from Batch C, 2014 and 2015 Batch A.
“I want to also say that the introduction of this biometric data capture for monthly clearance is also going to stop the practice of some of our own staff because the corps members who don’t stay in their places of primary assignment do not just do that on their own.
“We will be telling ourselves lies if we say that we are not aware that they do it in connivance with some of our staff and you all know this, and that is why, as we speak now, about five of our staff, we have finished disciplinary actions against them in line with public service rules and with NYSC conditions of service, and some of them are going to be dismissed outrightly for conniving with corps members to leave their place of primary assignment.
“This is the second phase of the computerisation process of NYSC scheme for the purpose of enhancing our overall performance,” the NYSC Director-General said.

NOUN graduates to join NYSC, Law School programme soon – Director

Graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) would soon be allowed to participate in the National Youth Service Corps Scheme (NYSC) and the Nigerian Law School Programme.

The Director, Ilorin Study Centre of NOUN, Mr Michael Abikoye, made this known on Thursday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin.

Abikoye, who was NOUN first Acting Registrar, attributed the exclusion of NOUN graduates from the scheme and law school to public misunderstanding of the difference between Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and part time studies.

He expressed optimism that with the ongoing talk between the management of the Open University and the relevant stakeholders, NOUN students would be absorbed into the scheme.

“The denial of our graduates in participating in the NYSC scheme is based essentially on the general misunderstanding of difference in concept between open and distance learning system, which Nigerians have equated with part time studies.

“But open and distance learning is not exactly the same thing as part time study.

“Open and Distance Learning is a standard form of education and it is the vogue in many advanced countries today.

“Incidentally, most of NOUN programmes are accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) that accredits programmes of conventional Nigerian Universities.

“Our course materials are prepared by seasoned academics in the conventional university system and they go through rigorous and thorough process of editing and printing before they are released to the students.

“It may not surprise you to know that even in the conventional universities; our course materials are being used by some lecturers to produce their own handouts for students.

“That shows you the quality of our materials and by extension, the quality of our products,” Abikoye added.

Abikoye said that NOUN has standard and functioning laboratory at its headquarters and in some selected study centres across the country.

He said what NOUN has done in some centres where it has no laboratory of its own was to go into Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the neighbouring conventional universities.

“At the Ilorin Study Centre here for instance, we have gone into collaboration with the University of Ilorin, so that NOUN students can avail themselves with laboratory facilities there.

“This was particularly meant for the students of our School of Health Science and ICT,” he said.

Abikoye disclosed that NOUN has set up two skills acquisition vocational centres at graduate, post graduate diploma and certificate levels to fill the gap left behind by conventional universities. (NAN)

UNICAL Postgraduate Admission 2015/2016 Announced

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into graduate programmes in the 2015/2016 academic year leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma, Masters and Doctor of Philosophy Degree of the University of Calabar.
A.GENERAL REGULATIONS
Courses may be offered full-time or part-time. All programmes begin with coursework and end with a project for Graduate Diploma, MBA, MPA and MPAS or thesis for Master's and Ph.D degree.
1.DURATION OF PROGRAMME:For full-time studies the Postgraduate Diploma lasts for two (2) semesters. The Master's degrees last for 3 - 5 semesters; and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programmes last for 6 - 10 semesters.
For part-time programmes, the Master's degrees last for 4-6 semesters, the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) lasts for 10-14 semesters.
Note that PGD programmes run on full-time basis only.
2.REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION:Candidates are required to have a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale and 2.75 on a 4-point scale for Master's programmes and 4.00 on a 5-point scale and 3.00 on a 4-point scale for the Ph.D programmes. A CGPA of 1.50 and above is required for PGD programmes.
Candidates with Master's degree from recognized universities may credit the relevant courses towards the Ph.D programme, provided that the quality of the grade is acceptable to the Graduate School

4.CONCEPT NOTE
As part of the application, candidates are expected to submit a CONCEPT NOTE of 3 pages maximum for Ph.D programmes and a-one-and-a-half (1 ½) page maximum for Masters’ programme. The concept note will be typed online in a space provided in the form and printed out for submission to the department. The concept note is a MINI SUMMARY OF RESEARCH PROPOSAL highlighting what candidates intend to research on when admitted. It has to cover the following:
- Statement of the programme
- Relevance of study to self and society
- Aim(s) of the study
- Justification
- Methodology
- Brief theoretical background

5.TRANSCRIPTS

PTDF Cancels Overseas Scholarship Programmes For Nigerian Graduates And Undergraduates

PTDF Cancels Overseas Scholarship Programmes For Nigerian Graduates And Undergraduates. Latest report reaching us has it that the Petroleum Technology Development Fund has canceled its overseas scholarship programmes for Nigerian graduates and undergraduates.
This was made know to newsmen by the Head, External Relations, Mr. Kalu Otisi
This, it said, was part of its new policy direction, adding that it would fundamentally affect the operation and funding of its overseas scholarship scheme and other training programmes under the fund’s management.
Otisi, on Thursday, said the policy directions “include a partial or outright domestication of the scholarship scheme in Nigeria in line with the Local Content policy of the Nigerian government, and the denomination of the scholarship in hard currency as against the Naira due to the volatility of foreign exchange rates.”
To give effect to these policy shifts, the fund said it had opened up discussions with officials of foreign universities where Nigerian scholars were regularly sent for their Masters and PhD studies under the sponsorship of PTDF.
The discussion, it said, was on the possibility of either setting up branches of the foreign institutions in Nigeria or collaborate with local universities in Nigeria, particularly those whose oil and gas related departments had been fully upgraded by the fund to become centres of excellence in teaching and research.
The Executive Secretary, PTDF, Mr. Femi Ajayi, who held interactive sessions with officials of the Imperial College London and the University College London as well as Nigerian scholars, said such a partnership would henceforth form the basis for the fund’s future relationship and co-operation with universities providing training and research to its scholars abroad.
He reportedly said, “This is because we have institutions in Nigeria which PTDF has over the years been upgrading. So we want a situation where there will be more cooperation between universities out here and our universities back home.
“And we have some faculties that we have developed or upgraded as an agency where some of these short term and long term courses can be run. So we are discussing the various modes of partnership and collaboration towards moving along this line.”
PTDF is a Federal Government agency which has the mandate of enhancing the institutional capacities of universities offering oil and gas related courses.
Ajayi said the fund plans to use the National Institute of Petroleum Policy and Strategy, Kaduna, as the coordinating centre for alternative energy sources and renewable energy resources and called on foreign universities to come on board with the PTDF in realising the target.

Who Killed Kelechi Precious? Questions trail UNIPORT student's death... Rivers govt urges probe

"This young lady a 200 level student of Theater Arts department, faculty of Humanities, University of Port Harcourt, Kelechi Ndulagwua Precious, died as a result of the carelessness of the nurses and doctors at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital...

Last Sunday, a 200 level student of Theater Arts at theUniversity of Port Harcourt(UNIPORT),Kelechi Ndulagwua Precious, died at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Alakahia, Port Harcourt.

Reports say she had slumped in her room and was rushed to the hospital by colleagues.

Unfortunately, she died there while awaiting treatment.
Precious' colleagues allege that she died as a result ofnegligence on the part of UPTH medical staffwho refused to attend to her.

One of the students,Judith Oyila, led protesters to the hospital which they shut down, claiming that doctors failed to attend to the deceased for about 6 hours, from 6 a.m to 12 noon.

“She died because of neglect by the doctors and nurses in that hospital," Oyila said.

"How could it be that a student slumped and students rushed her to UPTH but the doctors left her for over six hours without treatment and the poor girl died?"

Oyila and her fellow protesters are not the only ones alleging negligence and unprofessionalism.

Several people on social media, like oneGodswill Jumbo, weighed in their opinions,indicting the medical personnelinvolved.

"This young lady a 200 level student of Theater Arts department, faculty of Humanities, University of Port Harcourt, Kelechi Ndulagwua Precious, died as a result of the carelessness of the nurses and doctors at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Alakahia, Port Harcourt,"Jumbo wrote on his wall.

"She slumped in her room out of stress and was rushed to the school's hospital, UPTH, but the nurses rejected her because they claimed there was no bed space for her to be admitted.

"Her friends pleaded profusely with them to attend to her but the nurses and doctors turned deaf ears to them till she died."

As if silently blaming the hospital staff as well, the Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr.Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has called on the Federal Government and UNIPORT management to investigate the circumstances surrounding Precious' death.

She said the death is a wakeup call to medical staff in the private and public sectors.

With no official version of the tragedy yet given, there are still questions about the events that led to the student's demise.
Many will like to know what changes will come and if anyone will be punished for the allegations of negligence.

Whena similar tragedy occurred at the University of Ibadan, the entire medical system was overhauled after students’ protests.

The Management and Academic Board of the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua have condemned, in strong terms the recent reports in some electronic media houses in the State that the institution has suffered a loss of accreditation of some of its programmes.
For the avoidance of doubt, the National Board for technical Education (NBTE), the Governing Board for all Polytechnics in the country, has not withdrawn accreditation for any of the programmes in our Institution.
The false rumors being peddled are not only despicable but are designed to embarrass the State Government, the Institution and the generality of Akwa Ibom people.

Female Poly Student Caught With Gun

A female student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Miss Oreoluwa Adedamola, has been apprehended by the men of the Ogun State Anti-Robbery Squad, for being in possession of a locally-made gun.
The 20-year-old lady, who claimed to be an OND 2 Mass Communication student, was arrested on August 29 at Ifo, around 11.45pm, while travelling in a mini-truck with one Sikiru Kelani.
She was among the suspects paraded by the Ogun State police commissioner, Abdulmajid Ali, on Tuesday at the state command headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.
However, while speaking with our correspondent, Oreoluwa, who wept profusely, said it was Kelani that hid the gun inside her bag without her knowledge.
She explained that she knew Kelani, a self-confessed member of Bucaneer confraternity, through her late boyfriend, Akeem, who was also a Marketing student at MAPOLY.
She said, “On the day I was arrested, I came from Lagos to attend the candle light procession organised for my late boyfriend, Akeem, in Abeokuta.
“After the event, I went to my friend’s place where I had intended to pass the night, but she had travelled out of town to Ijebu Ode. It was at this point this ‘street brother’ (Sikiru Kelani) to my late boy friend, asked me to pass the night in his place.
“I was already sleeping when he woke me up around after 9pm, and said we are travelling to Oshodi in Lagos. I was baffled because it was already late.
“He lied to me that there was problem in the house, and we had to leave. He told me we should use the opportunity to attend a party being organised by his friend in Lagos. On our way, he stopped to see some people at Ori Iyanrin in Abeokuta. That was the last I knew about the case.”
Kelani, while speaking with our correspondent, confessed that he was the one who hid the gun in Oreoluwa’s bag when he sighted the men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad on the highway at Ifo.
He said he was on his way to Oshodi, Lagos, to attend a friend’s party when himself and Oreoluwa were arrested.
