Federal College Of Education, Kano Begin Seven-Day Warning Strikeg

Members of the Academic Staff of the Federal College of Education, Kano will today, 24th August, 2015 embark on a one-week industrial action to express their dissatisfaction the Federal Government’s decision to revert Federal Colleges of Education to its former status.
It would be recalled that the Federal Government had on Friday, 21st August reverted its decision to upgrade the Federal College of Education, Kano to university of education.
Members of the staff union accused the provost of sabotaging the upgrading of the institution, over what they described as his selfish interest.
Speaking to reporters over the new directive, the Provost of the College, Dr Rabi Jubirila hinted that a directive from the Federal Government mandated the reversal of the College of Education to its former status.
Rabi said: ”The letter received yesterday from the Federal Government specifically cited two major issues, directing that by the copy of this letter, you are directed to reverse the school to its original status.
“Also, the letter stated that consequently, you are directed to continue to administer the College as Federal College of Education and as the Provost of the College with all right and privilege.”
Dr Rabi, who denied allegations that provosts of the colleges were behind the withdrawal of the university status, insisted that “four Provosts cannot be too powerful to influence the Federal Government’s decision”.

SSANU Threatens To Shut Down Universities If…-

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) on Sunday in Lagos disclosed that the association might go ahead with its planned to shut down all universities in the country should the federal government fail to rescind its decision to stop funding universities’ staff schools.
Mr Alfred Jimoh, SSANU’s national vice-president, Western Zone, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the association might go ahead with its planned strike, should the Federal Government privatise the schools.
Jimoh told NAN that the association, which had in June carried out a peaceful protest over the issue, disclosed that it had received a circular to the proposed privatisation.
He said the circular from the Federal Ministry of Education had directed the vice-chancellors of federal universities to stop accommodating teachers of staff schools in their emolument structure.
“SSANU, on receiving the circular, expressed dissatisfaction with the development by threatening to withdraw their services should government go ahead with its plan to stop funding staff schools,” he said.
He warned that the strike, which would be unprecedented, would not only affect students and the education sector, but would also question the current administration’s promise of creating employment for Nigerians.
“In spite of appeals from concerned stakeholders, the government seemed resolute on going ahead with the planned privatisation. Ever since we called on government to review its stand on the issue, nothing seems to have been done on that because we have not received any feedback. Government seems to be going about it in an underground manner. But we are just watching because we shall resist any attempt by the government to carry out its plan if it goes ahead with it.
“On our part, the National Executive Committee of SSANU will meet over the issue from August 27 to August 28 at the University of Jos for the next line of action,” Jimoh disclosed.
He urged the government to reconsider its stand on the issue in order not to allow the peace being enjoyed in the universities currently to be truncated. (NAN)
