Unemployment In Nigeria 120 Plateau youths get vocational skills training

A hundred and twenty youths in Plateau state are undergoing a five-month long vocational training under the Basic National Open Apprenticeship Scheme (B-NOAS) of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE).

Speaking at the orientation ceremony on Monday, the NDE Coordinator, Stephen Ndaks, said the aim of the training was meant to empower youths and reduce unemployment, especially among the less privileged.

“The B-NOAS training is another practical step taken by NDE towards empowering the less privilege in society," Ndaks said.

“It is also meant to curb societal crimes and youth restiveness due to unemployment and its attendant societal vices such as prostitution, drug addiction, amongst others."

Participants have a wide range of skills to choose in the five-month training programme.

“You will be trained in computer education, shoemaking, catering, knitting, GSM repairs and photography."

He told the participants to turn their focus from white collar jobs to useful skills that will make them self-employed, thereby creating employment and wealth.

The Head of the Department of Vocational Skills Development, Samuel Maida, advised the trainees to observe the rules guiding the program.

UDUSOK 2015/2016 Post-UTME Screening Date, Procedure Announced. This is to inform all candidates (UTME and DIRECT ENTRY) who chose the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUSOK), as their Most Preferred institution in 2015/2016 JAMB UTME, to register online for the admission screening exercise.
Eligibility
The UTME applicants must have scored 180 and above in the 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. Direct Entry candidates must have at least Lower Credit at Diploma and a minimum of six (6) points at NCE/IJMB.
However, Direct Entry applicants for Medicine, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing, Radiography and Law should not register for the screening.

Spice Feature ‘Nigerians studying in India are self-driven’

Formany Nigerian students abroad, racism is an issue to contend with, how has your university tackled that aspect?
Every society considers its own culture as superior. It’s a way of feeling good. And generally speaking, every society also likes to consider itself as superior, and that others are the inferiors. That is a general thing, but in India, the problems are basically because of certain number of Nigerians indulge in drug running and other crimes. Apart from that, in general, we are a very tolerant society. Of course, the way I have lived in Nigeria, I know Nigerians are a happy people; while Indians are more conservative.
What is the performance of Nigerian students enrolled in your university?
We have over 500 Nigerian students in Sharda University, India. We are very strong in three areas: Management, Engineering and Allied Health Sciences. The reason is that most modern techniques of practising have been adopted in all the three schools. We also have very good laboratories and highly qualified teachers. Management is a changing science and we are aware of what is happening in management practices around the world. The school of Allied Health Sciences is particularly relevant because we have 820-bed specialist hospital and we have students who are studying allied health sciences courses like MRIs, X-rays and imaging technology. Irrespective of whatever image Nigerians may have cultivated for themselves outside their country, we generally find Nigerian students studying in the university to be full of drive. They are seeking academic excellence, and we do believe that some of them will go well ahead, and we can say we are proud of the students.
How do you think the Allied Health Science school can help contribute to health care development in Nigeria?
There are identifiable gaps in the health care system in Nigeria. Some hospitals have equipment and, no personnel. Some neither have diagnostic equipment nor personnel. Some hospitals are administratively not very good. This is why we have the kind of health care system we have in Nigeria. Sometimes, the diagnosis is the problem, while in other cases; some don’t have the proper equipment. But when we have properly qualified doctors and trained medical staff, consequently, they can double up and things can get better. I don’t think money is the problem in Nigeria. It’s the lack of trained people which poses a serious challenge to health care delivery. Machines are important but within a year, they can break down. Sometimes, the operators in charge of those machines don’t really know how to operate them properly. They have the degree but they really have the experience. One benefit of studying at a good university is the graduate will have an edge over others.
Are you saying a lack of knowledge is what causes wrong diagnosis?
Yes. You can put in place the best equipment and put a person who doesn’t really know how to operate it in care of it, it amounts to nothing. But a trained person would be able to see what the doctor has recommended properly, would be able to act on the doctor’s instructions, generate the right code from the machine, which would be more accurate. So, you cannot discount such people.
Are you saying that we need to train and re-train our health care personnel to be able to stop the problem of wrong diagnosis?
Yes. A good university will train those people properly.
Does it mean that if our health care personnel develop themselves more, we can begin to look at getting to where India is today in terms of health care development?
Not immediately, because there are infrastructural problems related to that. The doctor to patient ratio in Nigeria is very poor. In the United Kingdom, they have one doctor to 200 patients, while in Nigeria you have one doctor to about 100,000 patients. I don’t know whether the statistics are right, but that’s the idea. That needs to change. Of course, in Nigeria, we think we can run everything on generator, but that isn’t so. It’s just not true. The power has to be better. Imagine you are in the middle of a surgery and the generator goes off. The patient dies. You have power systems and you have power backup system in hospitals, typically. The equipment maintenance, which I would say is the problem all over Africa, is not just a Nigerian problem. If you have to buy the proper machines, it costs so much more to have reliability. For example, if you want to establish a typical hospital in India, it might cost you about $80m to $90m but if you want to establish the same hospital with the same facilities here in Nigeria, it might cost you about $300m. This is because you need more robust equipment, the higher construction cost, the higher maintenance cost and the cost of running it, is also higher. Add to the cost of running the generator and maintaining it. That’s higher. In other places, an effective primary health care system will not allow a phenomenon called undiagnosed or misdiagnosed illness to arise. As we speak, we are also trying to tie up with some states like Kano, Delta, and possibly Ebonyi. What we are trying to do is tackle the issue of primary health care, not as a university, but as a hospital. We have a medical college, and we have a hospital.
You said over 500 Nigerian students are in your institution, how many are studying medicine and related courses?
About 30 to 40 of Nigerian students are currently studying medicine in Sharda University. A number of students are studying M.Tech and M.Sc. in various fields, and Kano State Government sponsored about 165 of them. Some of them are studying Business Management, some engineering, but health care is quite popular among students coming from Africa and Nigeria, simply because of the health needs. A graduate from our university may wish to have a diagnostic centre; thus, he goes to a village or a larger community to set up a medical laboratory. I believe that it will be useful, because if cases are diagnosed at that primary level, even by entrepreneurs, it will be useful. One of the reasons why the cost of providing medical care is so high here in Nigeria is that there are not enough doctors, not enough diagnostic centres and medical health professionals. There is the need to have more competitions to bring the cost down. For us at the university, that is the gap we are trying to fill. We have a teaching hospital where our students are being trained and I think it will be good for students coming from Africa. I’ve been around Africa; Tanzania, Uganda and some parts of West Africa. Not only will the growth in this area bring down medical cost, it will reduce mortality rate and increase mortality age. That is one issue that is very important, because people having responsibilities cannot just die, it’s not done.
Have you noticed that the drop dead syndrome has become very prevalent in Nigeria in recent times?
There are not enough dieticians or nutritionists in Nigeria, apart from the inadequate number of doctors. People need to be counselled as regards their nutrition. It’s not good to be fat. All those big bellies that people are very proud of in Nigeria, is all fat, and it’s not good. I’m making a very simple point, and the point is a person who has family and other responsibilities cannot just drop dead.
Are Sharda University’s certificates recognised?
Yes and the certificates are accepted. We offer good and affordable education. The facilities are reasonable, adequate and modern, but a university is not about facilities. It’s about what you teach. We would like people here to look at India as a destination for education, for one simple reason that India is solving some of the problems that Nigeria is facing now. Let’s say someone is going to the United Kingdom or United States to study, how much of what he does in the US is relevant to Nigeria? Immigration is no longer very easy. A person going from here to such places cannot be sure of getting a job after his degree. It’s not very easy anymore. The queues are getting longer. What I’m saying is that the relevance of education comes when you see people fighting similar problems, finding solutions and, they can come back and incorporate some of those solutions.
Apart from Kano, what other states are you planning to partner with in the country?
We are looking at Delta and Ebonyi. But most importantly, we would like to see our efforts in at least one of these states productive, unlike trying to do multiple states at a time, making a big issue out of it and at the end of the day telling stories and giving excuses.
But are Nigerian students enrolling for management programmes?
We have management courses, and we have postgraduate programmes as well. We also have Applied Economics at undergraduate level, and it is a little different from the usual economics that we have. It’s like estimating how much of an item a notable supermarket would be selling in about five years— the demand quotient. That’s applied economics. It’s an excellent course developed by a colleague of mine, which is good, because Nigeria needs all sorts of specialisation to help the country grow.
Do you run online courses?
We don’t. There are plenty online books. If our university does not offer online courses, it does not affect the price of fish in the market. But what I’m saying is online courses are meant for people who already have the desire to know. It’s not good enough for a person who is sleepwalking into an academic area. You want to know about journalism or you want to know what is happening somewhere else, you already have the drive. On an average, I spend about three to four hours every day scanning the Internet, reading various things. I have the drive. I mean I could be doing that in my area of interest. But online minus the learning desire is equal to zero.
In Nigeria, one of the problems we have is that small and medium scale enterprises which hardly survive. Do you have MBA courses that can help people develop expertise in sustaining SMEs?
MBA courses are not normally that direct. I also know some other issues that are peculiar to Nigeria. I’m here because I believe we have the power to change something as part of our small and meaningful contribution. As to why those SMEs run down, it’s one factor. People don’t identify themselves with their businesses. I don’t have to say anything more than that. Business, as an entity, is very important, it needs to be nurtured. You can’t be stressed about having to run that business. It has to be a pleasure.

“Don’t exceed or reduce your admission quota” – NANS warns tertiary institutions

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Saturday urged heads of tertiary institutions in Nigeria to adhere to the admission quota assigned to their various institutions.
A statement made available to newsmen in Abuja by Mr Nwankwo Ezekiel, NANS Head of Public Relations, said “We want the higher institutions to adhere strictly to the admissions quota agreed and assigned to the various schools.

“We will not relent in stampeding the defaulted institutions all in the interest of our members”.
The statement demanded that students should be treated fairly by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and higher institutions of learning across the country.
It also condemned the delay in mobilising graduated students for the National Youth Service Corps scheme and their disqualification for not possessing JAMB registration number.
NANS said that such delay was not in the interest of the students and country in general.

Forgery: YABATECH expels 73 students

The Academic Board of Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos, has expelled 73 students of the college for presenting suspected forged results.

A statement issued by the college made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday said that the affected students were those pursuing part-time programmes for National Diploma and Higher National Diploma.
Signed by the Deputy Registrar of the college, Mrs Titilayo Obadimu, the statement said the affected students registered for 2013/2014 academic session.

According to the statement, the results are discovered during the verification exercise of Senior Secondary School Certificates and National Diploma results.
It said further that 46 students for National Diploma and 27 students for Higher National Diploma were affected.
“All affected students are advised to hand the property of the college in their possession, including student identity cards, to their various heads of department, the librarian and the dean of students’ affairs with immediate effect,’’ it said.
Mr Charles Oni, Head, Public Relations Unit of the college, told NAN that the college had zero tolerance for all forms of malpractices and social vices.
He said that all documents presented for admission into the college were always subjected to rigorous screening.
He, therefore, urged prospective students to steer clear of malpractices, including results’ forgery.

Adeleke University Offers Scholarship To 18-year-old Rape Victim

Authorities of Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, on Saturday asserted that the institution will give scholarship to the 18-year-old admission seeker allegedly raped by a part-time lecturer of the University of Lagos, Mr. Akin Baruwa.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Oluwole Amusan who promulgate this to liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine said that the management was moved by the plight of the girl, who was allegedly raped in the course of her quest for a university education. .

The VC said, “Giving out scholarships to indigent students is not new to us. Our founder had a foundation whose existence preceded the university, through which scholarships were given to students.
“Since the university was established four years ago, the tradition has continued.”
According to the VC, the scholarship would cover the four-year duration of Mass Communication, which the girl has chosen to study, a course which UNILAG has said she was not qualified for with her 211 score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

He said it has not been determined whether the scholarship would be full or partial since he had not yet interacted with the father of the victim.
With a student population of over 1,000, one fifth of Adeleke University undergraduates are on scholarship, it was learnt.
The father of the alleged rape victim, told our correspondent that he had been contacted by the institution to come to the university.

“I was so happy when I was contacted. May God bless you so much for seeing the case through. I am so happy. Such scholarship would be a big blessing to my daughter,” he said

How I Escaped Being Raped By UNILAG Lecturer, Says Another victim

A 28-year-old former student of the part-time lecturer of the University of lagos who was accused to have rape an 18-year-old admission seeker has come out with a revelation of how she barely escaped being raped by Baruwa.
The young woman, who spoke under the strict condition of anonymity, explained that the sexual assault of the 18-year-old girl provided a window of opportunity for her to expose what she went through in the hands of the philandering lecturer.

Agnes said, “I finished my project around December 2013. It was around that time my supervisor, who was a very pleasant woman, retired. I was reassigned to Mr. Akinfolarin Baruwa. I got his number and called him on the phone and he told me to come the following day.
“He fixed the appointment around 5pm the next day. I went to meet him in an office in the Faculty of Business Administration, which he shared with another lecturer. I noticed it was the other lecturer’s name that was on the door.

“When I got to his office, I noticed that there was a student that came to submit her project also. She was from the Lagos State University. So, I supposed he was also doing part-time work at LASU.
“While I was there, other students came to submit their projects also and he told me to wait outside. Later he started sending me on errands. He would tell me to go and make one photocopy or another or buy things for him. I was patient and did everything he asked.
“He did all these until around 8pm when he eventually looked at my project. As soon as he opened the pages, he flung it away. ‘What kind of rubbish is this?’ he said. He said I would have to start the project from the beginning.
“Mr. Baruwa told me that everything I did was rubbish. He said I did not cite a particular reference somewhere and said he would report me to our course adviser for plagiarism and I would be given an extra year. He just wanted to hold on to something just to rubbish my work.”
Agnes alleged that it was at this point that she started to beg Baruwa. She claimed that she was on her knees because she was writing exams and most of her colleagues had already finished their project.

“There was also a deadline I had to meet for the submission of the project. I explained all these to him and begged. Later, he said I should drop the project that he would see what he could do about it,” Agnes said.
According to Agnes, Baruwa does not have a doctoral degree. She said he was a part-time lecturer, who was assigned students for supervision and given invigilation roles during examinations.
It would be recalled that the management of UNILAG had on Monday, denied having Baruwa under the employ of the institution despite the fact that he supervised the final projects of many students in the Faculty of Business Administration.

A handwritten complaint filed against Baruwa, which Agnes submitted to UNILAG authorities
Infact, Agnes, who is now married, showed our correspondent a copy of her undergraduate project, bearing Baruwa’s name and signature.
Agnes said after Baruwa softened on his threat that she would have an extra year, she went down on her knees to thank him but while she was mouthing her appreciation, the man allegedly moved around the office closing the blinds.
“He brought out some fruits from the fridge. I thought he was preparing to go home when he was doing that. He was clearing the books on the sofa. He said, ‘is that how to say thank you?’ I only knew something was amiss when he suddenly locked the door,” she said.
“Before I knew what was happening, he pulled me and put my hands on his manhood. He grabbed my breasts and I began to struggle with him. He started to forcibly remove my clothes. I was shocked beyond words. I felt really violated.
“He grew more aggressive as I fought him off. I screamed but I knew my screaming would do nothing because the office is opposite the UNILAG guesthouse by the seaside.

“I am asthmatic. As he was about to force himself on me, I realised that I was beginning to have breathing problem as if an attack was on its way. I decided to lay still and I started breathing excessively as if I was already having asthmatic attack. I started to beg him as I breathed heavily. I told him, ‘Please, I can’t breathe, I have asthma.’
“He then left me alone after that and apologised. He said he was not usually like that and that he was only aroused. He said I should just give him a ‘handjob’ (fondle his manhood with my hand) instead. I started to beg him again and pretended as if I wanted to faint. I told him to open the door in order for me to get fresh air.”
Agnes said as she rushed out of Baruwa’s office, she was in so much shock that she lost her bag with , out knowing. She said the shock was so much that she fell down and could not move.
According to her, her troubles did not stop there.
She claimed that the next time she went to Baruwa’s office for her project, she had to tell a friend to follow her.
She said, “He must have sighted me from afar because when I told him that I was around, he just dismissed me that he had no time. He gave me an appointment for early morning but I went there some minutes after 7am. He said, ‘You think you are smart eh? You are playing with your graduation.’

“After I eventually got the project back from him and went back to submit, there was a little activity in his office then. He told me to wait outside. As the office cleared and the lecturer he shared the office with left, he called me inside.
“He started to force himself on me again and I started begging that I had a fiancée. He said ‘So?’ In broad daylight, he was fondling me. But as I resisted him and dragged myself from his grip, my shirt tore. I was infuriated. I stormed out of his office and threatened that I was going straight to the vice chancellor’s office.
“He became aggressive at this point and shouted at me that I should get out of his office. He said I would never graduate. I was so angry that I was going straight towards the senate building.”
Agnes said she was later called back by someone who knew her. She claimed that some officials in the faculty intervened in the matter that day and that when Baruwa was approached on the issue, he feigned ignorance.

“He said, ‘Me? I was only telling her about the corrections she had to effect on her project and told her to come back when she started shouting.’ Later, the lecturers were behind closed door with him and I did not hear what they discussed. When they came out, they just told me to forget the issue,” she said.
liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine learnt that Agnes’ problem persisted when it was time for Baruwa to submit her score sheet to her course adviser.

According to her, every student was mandated to submit a score sheet to their respective project supervisor, who would in turn submit to the course adviser.
Agnes said, “Without it, you cannot submit the final copy of your project or defend the project. In short, you cannot graduate,” Agnes told our correspondent. “But Mr. Baruwa refused to submit my score sheet. I kept asking him about it and he kept referring me to the course adviser. He maintained he had submitted it. But the course adviser kept telling me she had not got my score sheet.

“He later said something that made me realise he was merely punishing me for not allowing him to have his way with me. While I was going through these problems, I heard of other ladies who had the same problem but could not speak out.
“When the frustration was too much, I had to write a letter of complaint telling the school authorities to look into my issue with Mr. Baruwa.

“He later submitted my score sheet after he put me through so much trouble. By the time I escaped him, I was already psychologically drained.

“When I heard about the case of this other girl, I just shook my head because there was no way the girl could have escaped him.”

Despite initial denials from the UNILAG management that it did not know who Baruwa was, it was learnt that he supervised the final projects of undergraduates.

Liveschoolnews.com.ng learnt that after Agnes’ report to the school authorities, Baruwa was stopped from supervising female students. But why he still retained his part-time duties in the faculty is not clear.

Our correspondent contacted the Public Affairs Officer of UNILAG, Mr. Olagoke Oke, following this fresh allegation.
He said every allegations against Baruwa would be discussed by a four-man panel set up by the institution to look into how the suspect got into the university system.
Asked if the school could now admit that he was indeed working in the institution and that he was even supervising undergraduate projects, he said, “That might have been possible in DLI (Distant Learning Institute). But the panel would look at all these and come out with the report of its investigation soon.”

Benue State University Lecturer Call Off Strike

The local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Benue State University (BSU) in Makurdi, on Monday, called off its strike and asked members to return to work.
The lecturers embarked on an indefinited strike four months ago because former Governor Gabriel Suswam did not pay their salaries.
The strike was called off after a peace meeting held by the ASUU leadership and representatives of the management and the state government. The parties, reached a “realistic” agreement after hours of meeting.
The ASUU Chairman, Dr David Ikoni, said lecturers were satisfied with the commitment of Governor Samuel Ortom to the agreement.
“We told our members that we agreed to the terms of the governor and suspended the strike on the governor’s appeal. He gave us his commitment and we felt that we should give him a benefit of the doubt,” Dr Ikoni said.
He said the lecturers would not hesitate to embark on strike again if the governor failed to keep his promise.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Charity Angya, said the governor would do his best to ensure the school is not shut down again. She said: “Gov. Ortom has entered an agreement that is realistic. He had a good discussion with ASUU members and he agreed to the demands of the lecturers.”
The development excited students, some of who expressed happiness. Mary Anyogo, a 300-Level Mass Communication student, said she could not afford to stay at home any longer. “I am so happy when I heard the news. I can’t wait to go back to school,” she said.
Nana Ugoor, a 300-Level Psychology student, said he was no prepared to return to school, because of his financial challenge. He said: “Calling off the strike is good news, because it is what has been expected by students. But, I am not ready financially. I sponsor myself and it is not easy, getting money to return. I will resume in due time.”
The management has advised both staff and students not to waste time in resuming back to work to make up for the lost time.

UI Student Slumps, Dies After Waiting For Hours To Write Exam

There was wild uproar at the University of Ibadan over the death of a distance learning student of the institution who slumped and die at the Adebayo Akande e-Centre, Ikeja, Lagos, after waiting for hours to write the examination.
The 100 level student of political science, identified as Pelewura Bolaji, was said to have written the first paper for the day before the incident happened.

The victim, according to an identification card found on him, is a worker with Greengates Specialties Limited. Though the ID card expired in September 2014.
An official of the school, who identified himself as Mr. Olayinka Kehinde, said he was the only UI official at the centre to supervise the examination. He said the matter had been reported to the school authorities and he was awaiting further directive concerning the examination.
It was discovered that while the body of the student was lying down in a car within the premises, examination was still going on.

One of the examiners confirmed that there was an instruction that the examination should continue.

A student, who simply identified himself as Tony, said, “The management of the centre had earlier told us that the examination might not hold successfully in Lagos due to some challenges and that they subsequently notified the authorities.”

Some of the students alleged that they were made to pay medical fees, but expressed concern that the management failed to put in place necessary medical facilities in case of emergency.
The victim was later confirmed dead at the Lagoon Hospital, Ikeja.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for 2015/2016 admission into the School of Genetal and Preliminary Studies (SOGAPS) of the Federal University, Dutsin-ma Katsina state, Nigeria.

The objectives of the school are to:

Fill and submit the “Application Form”.
A “Payment Transaction Slip” is generated for you. On it, you will find your unique Transaction ID for making payments, as well as your Application Form Number.
Print a copy of your Payment Transaction Slip, and proceed to pay a non-refundable fee of N5,300 (Five thousand, three hundred naira only, bank charges inclusive) N5,000.00 (Five thousand naira) for the Application form and N300.00 (Three hundred Naira) for bank charges using any of the payment options listed below.

For Remedial Studies – 1 (RS-1) & 2 (RS-2), a candidate should possess at least three (3) credits in any of the six subjects; English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Agricultural Science.
Screening Exercise
All successful applicants would be required to partake in a screening test for which a date would be announced.
*The test is Computer-Based Testing.
