Nigerian Student Becomes Winner Of Microsoft Contest

A student from Lagos became one of the winners of a contest organized by Microsoft that asked young people from around the world to submit an idea to address a social issue through technology in their communities.

The 2015 YouthSpark Challenge for Change announced 10 grand-prize winners of a global contest that helps young people to turn the causes close to their hearts into tangible ways to do good in the world.

Saviour Okusenogu, 17, from Lagos, became one of this year’s grand prize winners. He wants to develop a project to spark an interest in science and engineering for kids in developing countries. He plans to bring fun and interactive science experiments and other projects to secondary schools with hope that they will get kids far more excited than the abstract, conceptual ways many kids learn about those topics.

POLICE ARREST 6 SUSPECTED CULTISTS IN BENUE

The Police in Benue State have arrested six people in connection with cult activities from different locations in Makurdi metropolis.

Spokesman of the command, Austin Ezeani, said that the arrest was made possible following the determination of the police to clamp down on cultists in the state in a renewed effort to ensure that residents can move about freely without molestation.

Daily Trust reports that incidences of killing occasioned by cult clashes have become rampart in the state, especially in recent weeks where at least three or more people are hacked down mercilessly on daily basis at different areas of the state.

Ezeani also told our correspondent in Makurdi that the command, in response to recent deadly activities of cultists, recorded huge success within the local government areas of the state.

He said the arrest of the six suspects were made by the ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘D’ divisions of the police command in the state capital and that dangerous weapons such as guns, knives, charms and axes were recovered from them.

The spokesman further warned those involved in cultism to have a change of mind and turn a new leaf or the police would fish them out from their various hiding places.

Governor Samuel Ortom had in his inaugural speech declared amnesty for people in possession of illegal arms in the state, urging them to willingly surrender their weapons and be integrated back into the society or face the wrath of the law.
“We call on all unlawfully armed persons who have been terrorising innocent citizens to immediately surrender their arms, be free and get integrated into our reform programme, or we shall pursue them down to their holes,” the governor said.

"On Monday at Ozar secondary school, Asa in Ukwa West LGA of Abia State when a student who was sent home by a teacher Mrs Njoku to barb her hair, regrouped with her mother and elder siblings to attack teachers and students.

The JSS two student, Precious Nwadike had earlier been warned by same teacher two weeks ago to barb her hair but she did not heed to the warning. On arrival to school on Monday, the student was asked to go home to get her haircut.

She left immediately only to return two hours later with the mother and four of her siblings who marched straight to the staff room and commanded the teachers to come out. Furthermore, the mother of the student, Mrs Nwadike held a teacher, pulled her cloth & ordered the sons to cut her hair. The intervention of another teacher, Mrs Osuagwu provoked the sons and one of them, Uche almost strangled her. But the quick intervention of students, led to a free for all fight in which Mrs Nwadike and children were fully prepared.' According to Izuchukwu Nwaokoma, it took the intervention of an annoymous youth corp member currently serving in the school who alerted military personnel to come to the rescue. 'Their quick arrival calmed the situation and doused the tension. Mrs Nwadike and children were arrested and taken to Obehie police station, Asa.

NYSC MEMBER MURDERED IN IMO

A member of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) simply identified as Akpan has been strangled to death by yet to be identified assailants in Ezuhu Umuhu Okwuato autonomous community in Aboh Mbaise Council of Imo state. The victim whose body was discovered in his apartment by neighbours was tied up and his face covered with his shirt before he was murdered.

According to an eye witness who does not want his name mentioned, “neighbours of the deceased became curious when they discovered that his door was opened and was not seen around the premises.” The source added that; “when the neighbours entered the apartment they found the lifeless body of Apkan in a pool of his own blood with his legs tied and they promptly raised an alarm which attracted the attention of the members of the community who reported the matter to the Police.

It was learnt that the late Apkan who was said to hail from Cross Rivers State, was last seen on that fateful day when he was fetching water from a nearby borehole.

However, further investigations at the Christ the Saviour Secondary School, a private School in the community where the late corps member was a teacher, revealed that his death may not be unconnected with an alleged amorous affair with a young lady in the school which apparently had not gone well with another rival who was said to have been dating the said young lady before late corps member was posted to the community.

It was gathered that the boy friend to the young lady had threatened to deal with the corps member if he fails to hands off his girl friend.

When contacted the spokesman of the Imo state Police Command , Mr. Andrew Enwerem (DSP), confirmed the incident stating that some arrests has been made while investigations into the dastardly act has commenced in earnest

FG Bans local gin, ogogoro

The Federal Government on Monday banned the consumption of local gin, popularly called Ogogoro in all parts of the country.

The decision was sequel to deaths in Rivers and Ondo states due to food poisoning allegedly caused by the consumption of local gin.

The government however confirmed that the death toll in Rivers State had risen to 38 and 18 in Ode-Irele, Ondo State, following the consumption of local gin.

The Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, Dr. Paul Orhii, in his reaction to the death of 38 persons in Rivers State, told journalists that the recent incidents in the state and that of Ode-Irele, in Ondo State were associated with the consumption of locally made gin.

According to him, considering the risk in the consumption of locally made gin, it has become imperative to “warn the public to desist from the consumption of unregistered locally made spirits (Ogogoro) and other unregistered bitters.”

Orhii also warned that government “would confiscate all illegally brewed alcoholic beverages” across the country.

The NAFDAC boss also recommended “immediate reporting and evacuation to the nearest tertiary health institution as quick intervention can save lives.”

He said the NAFDAC team met with the Ondo State Commissioner for Health and Director of Diagnostic Services and an official of the World Health Organisation, who visited Ode-Irele to obtain first hand information.

He added, “A preliminary investigation by the National Centre for Disease Control and WHO, ruled out any infectious diseases and confirmed the possibility of poisoning as the cause and in turn advised NAFDAC to conduct further investigation.

“The symptoms suffered by victims included vomiting, abdominal pain, blurred vision, headache, dizziness and loss of consciousness with subsequent sudden deaths of 18 victims.”

Orhii, who was joined by the Director of NCDC, Prof. Abdulrahman Nasidi, explained that all indications showed that “these symptoms are the hallmark signs of methanol poisoning.”

Meet The University Don Who Says He Has Cure For AIDS

A University Don, Professor Maduike Ezeibe of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Abia State, has claimed his recent therapy for the dreaded Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome is real and effective.

According to Ezeibe, he discovered the therapy when he decided to join the medical world to search for a solution to HIV/AIDS.His research into the therapy known as ‘Antivirt’ (Anti-Viral Therapy) started in 1994, but he was able to discover the therapy in 2013 when his research was published in the British Journal of Medicine & Medical Research, Ezeibe explained.

Mr Ezeibe says two essential minerals, aluminum silicate and magnesium silicate, used in producing the therapy, are mostly found in Umuahia and parts of Abia State which then gives him an upper hand. It will also make the therapy which he claims would take an average of two or three months to cure cheaper and affordable.

Inspiring! Man who sold Nylon bags, served as a bus conductor and Laborer in Lagos emerges Speaker, Lagos Assembly

Very Inspiring story. Mudashiru Obasa, a politician representing Agege Constituency 1, who started his life as a street hawker who sold Nylon bags and wrist watches and later became a bus conductor and Laborer, all to eke a living while growing up in Lagos, today became the new speaker of the Lagos state House of Assembly. He is pictured above taking his oath of office. Congrats to him. Read about his early beginning below...

"I grew up in the Papa Ashafa area of Agege and there is hardly anything I have not done to make money, except armed robbery. Maybe I was too young to be an armed robber, but talking about hustling, there is hardly any type I have not gone into. I did all this on my own volition and not because my father could not afford to pay my school fees, but the friends I grew up with were always in one engagement or another. We would go to Agege Motor Road to sell nylon bags.

Then, 12 nylon bags is half the price when we buy and you would make times two of the amount you invested. Within few hours, you would have sold an encouraging amount. I was once a bus conductor, I was a labourer…just mention it. For me, I don’t believe in staying idle and that is why when people approach me asking for assistance to help them pay their children’s school fees, their accommodation and others, I ask them who is going to pay the next one. So why don’t you find something to do? For me, I don’t believe in staying idle and that is why when people approach me asking for assistance to help them pay their children’s school fees, their accommodation and others, I ask them who is going to pay the next one.
So why don’t you find something to do? That’s also why I don’t strongly believe in unemployment. If your father is not Dangote or Otedola and co, then you must look for something to do. It is only one with such as a father that can dictate where he wants to work. You have to be engaged, you have to do something to cross to another level,” he told PM news.
