UI Former VC, Professor Tekena Tamuno is Dead

A former Vice chancellor of the University of Ibadan and one of Africa’s renowned professors of history, Emeritus Professor Tekena Tamuno has been reported dead.
He died on April 11th at the age of 83 years.
It was learnt that he recently came back from the United States of America where he was treated for prostate cancer before his demise.

Efforts to get his family member to comment on his death proved abortive as they blatantly refused to interact with the news men on the issue stating that the demise of the professor was a “private affair.”
The professor has been described as an extremely cerebral historian and foremost scholar of the humanities and man who had great faith in God by those who knew him.

We say, “rest in peace Professor Tek¬ena Tamuno.

WAEC: Plateau To Ostracize Schools Caught In Exam Malpractice

The Commissioner for Education in Plateau, Mr Paul Wai, on Friday, warned that any school caught in examination malpractice in the state would be blacklisted.
The commissioner gave the warning while inspecting WAEC centres in Jos, saying the state had zero tolerance for such acts.
Wai, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Secondary Education, Mrs Ruth Biangten, told newsmen during the inspection that the state had no tolerance for anything that would lower its standard of education.
The commissioner, who frowned at examination malpractice, said it had a long time stain on the perpetrators and the society if not tackled immediately.
“Malpractice has destroyed the future of many bright students in higher institutions as they find it difficult to cope with their academics after gaining admission with such unmerited results, “he said.
He, however, expressed satisfaction with the sanitary condition of schools visited and the arrangement of the WAEC examination halls there.
He said an organised environment helped in minimising examination fraud, unlike in years past where halls were congested and very noisy during examinations.
Wai applauded the examination council for providing sufficient examination materials and for ensuring that the examination was concluded fairly. (NAN)

ASUP Poly Ibadan Salute Ajimobi

The Academic Staff Union of the Polytechnics (ASUP), the Polytechnic Ibadan chapter, yesterday, congratulated Senator Abiola Ajimobi, on his victory at the just concluded governorship election.
The Union, however, advised Governor Abiola Ajimobi, as he has broken the jinx in the annals of politics in Oyo State and being re-elected for another term, not to disappoint the people of Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole but bring about the desired expectations so that people would continue to witness unprecedented development in the areas of infrastructure development and economic growth.
Mr Olagoke Olawale, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the association said, “The victory of the governor did not just happen, it was due to the promises he had kept, such as attracting sustainable investment into the economy, agriculture, fight against corruption, among others.
The union also attributed Senator Ajimobi’s feat to the fact that “the governor always network as he keeps around him good people; he networks with people who have the potentialities to add value to him. The governor is inherently honest and ready to build the trust in those around him, he is also a good listener.”

LASU ASUU Confronts Management Again Over Closure of the Institution

The Lagos State University Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has confronted the management of the institution over refusal to announce resumption of academic activities.

Reacting in a statement signed by the union’s chairman, Comrade Adekunle Idris, the union said that the management announced a break and ordered students and staff out of the school without indicating any resumption date.

The union stated that the open-ended recess attributed to the general election is not only unwarranted but also a disruption of the academic calendar.

“The shutting down of activities in the university, when other institutions are undertaking academic activities, is an act of impunity that will adversely affect our students – the main purpose for which the university exists. By law, only the senate of LASU has the prerogative to adjust the academic calendar and declare a recess. This has not been done by senate”.

The Union condemned the action stating that there was no breakdown of law and order to warrant the suspension of academic activities in the school.

Beware! NOUN Law Degree Programme is Not Recognised

National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN LL.B qualification is unacceptable for admission to the Nigerian Law School for Bar Vocational training.

The Council of Legal Education again announces for the benefit of the general public that the LL.B Degree Programme offered by the National Open University of Nigeria is not approved.

The policy of the statutory bodies responsible for the training and admission of aspirants to the Nigerian Bar, i.e. the Council of Legal Education and the Body of Benchers is that the study of Law must be undertaken on full time basis, in recognized Institutions for the provision of undergraduate studies. This is also the position of the Professional Body of Lawyers in Nigeria – The Nigerian Bar Association.
Consequently, the regulatory bodies have long proscribed the study of law through Part time, Distance Learning or Correspondence Studies and it was in consequence of this, that the Part time LL.B Programmes run by the Faculties of Law of accredited Universities were abrogated. The position of the bodies has been that every aspirant for the Legal Profession must undertake an undergraduate study on full time basis, in a recognized Faculty of Law. This is because the study of Law transcends knowledge acquisition alone, as it involves the moulding of future entrants to the Bar in learning, character and attitudes.
The National Open University of Nigeria is not within the ambit of institutions envisaged by these bodies to offer a Law degree programme. Indeed, the National Open University of Nigeria has always been informed of this position; and its decision to commence and run the Law Programme was in defiance of this policy.

Any person who undertakes the study of Law at the National Open University of Nigeria is to note that the qualification obtained is unacceptable for admission to the Nigerian Law School for Bar Vocational training.
